Green not worried

Opposition Leader Ron Green

Despite claims by former Chief Justice Sir Brian Alleyne that the main Opposition United Workers Party (UWP) could lose its three seats in Parliament if they miss three sittings, party leader Ron Green seemed not perturbed.

The UWP has opted not to attend parliament following the general elections held on December 18, 2010 which saw a landslide victory for the ruling Dominica Labour Party.

The UWP said the election process lacked transparency, accusing the DLP of bribery and corruption.

Sir Alleyne indicated that according to constitution, if the UWP misses three sittings, a by-election could take place in Salisbury, Marigot and Roseau Central – the only three constituencies that the UWP won.

But when asked how fearful the UWP is, Green said “we would cross that bridge when we get there”.

He told an interview with Dominica News Online that the UWP feels strongly about the illegitimacy about the elections. “We will keep up that boycott until we see change,” Green said.

He noted that Prime Minister Skerrit has never attempted to discuss the boycott with the Opposition.

“I would imagine that he would be; he has chosen not to do so…It is not unusual and surprised. It is the way he had dealt with the  Opposition for the longest while. He has disrespected us,” Green added.

I am confused. If Ron did not win and is not Leader of the Opposition, and Skerrit did not win really, because Ron say he is a Frenchman and not eligible to be a parl rep jhijhay weh PM, somebody tell me please: In what capacity would each be speaking to each other?

During the Apartheid years in South Africa, tons of evidence were submitted to the courts regarding atrocities, fraud, bribery, innocent killings, Johnny P What happened? Mountains of evidence have been available regarding operations in Cuba to cripple the island’s economy and assassinate its leader. What happened?

You liberated or trapped by the web? Dominican lover or lover of bribery and corruption? Those simple analogies you can’t understand? Hundreds of international observers monitored the elections in Afghanistan last year. The whole world knows that the process was mired with fraud, Karzai remains president. Liberate yourself from mental slavery. You wanted Spraggs to lose now you say you feel sorry for him being out of parliament. The issues can be disseminated out of parliament. There are many avenues available. Why haven’t you all said anything about DBS blocking people from listening to other ideas apart from the ruling party?

Hope you all understand that one. A thief comes to my home, steals my TV set. I catch the culprit red-handed. Who is wrong or right in that case? Am I wrong to say that my TV set was stolen by that thief? would I be wrong to call the police? What system of language and logic, what system of religion and civil society allows men and women who see themselves as Christians to dehumanize those who stand on the side of truth? is it true that 1+1=2 in our counting system? Yes. Is it true that there was bribery, closing up of DBS, acts against the laws of the land? Yes.

TELL ME THAT I AM NOT POLITICALLY NIAVE. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT ONLY ELECTED CANDIDATES COULD BE LEADERS IN THE HOUSE. MR GREEN WAS NOT ELECTED, THEREFORE, HE CAN ONLY SIT IN THE HOUSE AS A SENATOR AND NOT A LEADER.

THEREFORE, ONE OF THE THREE UWP ELECTED MEMBERS IS ELIGIBLE TO BE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IN THE HOUSE. I BELIEVE NEITHER WANT TO TAKE ON THAT RESPONSIBILITY

I SAY ALSO, I CANNOT UNDERSTAND THIS POSSIBLE COURT CASE ABOUT DUAL CITIZENSHIP WHEN IN FACT THIS SITUATION APPLIES TO OTHERS AS WELL. FURTHERMORE THE LABOUR PARTY WILL STILL BE THE GOVERNMENT OF THE DAY. EDISON WITH YOUR POLITICAL EXPERIENCE, LET THE PROGRESSION OF THE COUNTRY CONTINUE THEN GO TO THE PARLIAMENT AS LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

UWP just pulling their legs! they’re looking for sympathy. Tell me why does the PM have to discuss anything with them? They won three sits and are supposed to be in parliament. If they decide to boycott, then the PM has nothing to say, ask or suggest and NO apologies for that.

They want sympathy so much they blablaing to see what PM will say; but they will miss two and come to the third one. If not we are ready like fredy to go for the bi-election. They think they can fool dominicans; want them to feel sorry for them.
Ron, Ron! run the ppl have spoken.

only now sir ALLEYNE IS SPEAKING ABOUT THE CONSTITUTION? WHEN THE PM SAID THE CONSTITUTION CANNOT PREVENT HIM FROM DOING WHAT HE WANTS TO DO WE DIDNT HEAR FROM HIM. NOW ITS IN HIS FAVOUR HE IS REFERENCING THE CONSTITUTION. IT HAS BEEN PROVEN THAT THE LEADERS HAVE NO REGAR FOR THE LAW AND THE CONSTITUTION.

UWP have just demonstrate how incapable they are, to get French Nationality by naturalisation one have to be living in France or French torritory for 25 years. As the PM was obviously living in Dominica, he would not have qualified for naturalisation, the only way he could become a French citizen is base on his parents. This is another stupid smoke screen, i think the reason people are laughing is at the dumbness of the UWP, who is advising them. Lawyer eating their money for nothing, money they should be saving to fight the next election in 5 years time so they can have a manifesto.

Real problem, what iare u trying to say. there are a lot of dominicans who want to see dominica with a viable opposition to vote for. However the current opposition have made themselves unelectable by thier behaviour. they are caught in a trap of there own making. Green has nothing to worry about he lost his seat. My concern is for the young man from Salisbury, Green and edison should be acting as mentors for him as this would have been his first time in parliament. things dont always go our way, but we have to learn to accept defeat. If we can treat triumph an disaster just the same. Move on. Refocus on what is important how to develope a new political base among the people.

Anyway you folks are not easy!!!!!!! Just so much off the cuff comments here–It is saddening. Ron as a leader took a postiion and if you don’t agree with it at least respect it. In a democracy ( yes we still have on in Dominica- one would not know reading all those silly comments on htis blog) we all canot be for the government and we all cannot be against the oppostion–in a democracy–not in North Korea.

More power to Mr. Green , more Power to Mr. PM—-let democracy rule……..people.

    The Real Problem:

Bring out the evidents my friend thats what we need to put an end to corruption once and for all!!

Shouting corruption a tousand and one times doesn’t make it true nor factual, so bring out what can stand in court, otherwise it remains as allegations and rumours that U MUST NEVER REPEAT!!!

Using the football scenario, you would have to have evident that the linesmen were apid and that the referee was bias towards bathestate, so if there was a penalty that was not picked up i think a protest would be in order.

The uwp has protested by challenging some seats in the court so lets wait and see what happens then!!!

Just to be clear evidence includes copies of Certificate of Titles, Authenticated signed contracts or even returned cheques that was cashed NOT AND I REPEAT NOT EMAILS SENT TO PERSONS!!!!!

    To ‘The real problem’

If you will excuse my ignorance. I find it difficult to see where the (football match) and (Sanford) analogies used by you, make any sense to the discussion on hand. If you recall, the Election was supervised by a team of external observers who gave the whole process the thumbs up. The margin of victory by the labour party over the other two main parties was so wide you would run out of measuring tape to measure it. So i find it difficult that you would think that Dominicans who has acknowledged the right of the labour party to govern, as ignorant. I think that you should remove the blinkers from your eyes and try and encourage the UWP elected opposition members to do their duty and represent their constituents in the official parliament and not the bogus peoples parliament which they waste tax payers time and money sitting around and doing nothing.

  18. The real problem
    February 24, 2010

Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise. In a football match, Harlem vs.Bath Estate, the referee supports Harlem, linesmen are paid to officiate against Bath Estate. Bath Estate forward is brought down in the penalty area, but no penalty is issued. The game finally ends Harlem 2, bath Estate 0. Tell me Dominicans, nothing wrong with that outcome? Did Harlem win the match fairly?

Allen Stanford was seen as a saviour of Antigua, $$$$$ flowing. However, even as a billionaire he could not pay his way out of jail after being caught involved in a massive fraud scheme. Was he correct to steal all those people’s $$$$ illegally to enrich himself?

Just as people struggled and fought over all those years for the right to vote, Dominicans have to fight even harder to ensure electoral reform, because there are no signs that changes will come regarding the way elections will be held in the future. The authorities are resisting any changes that will make our elections free and fair. Unfortunately, many of our legal persons, professionals and poor people prefer the constitution and laws to be violated in many ways by a few persons. Remember Allen Stanford and the power and status he enjoyed? Should Dominicans stop being honest, and truthful and go on stealing, abusing children and women or committing crimes? Would these actions be alright? Does it depend on who does the action? What a shame! What a shame! What a downright shame!!!! To be truly Dominican means to desist from supporting all forms of corruption irrespective of who is involved. Sad must be the heart of those who help fool and oppress men and women of our beloved land.

The UWP wants the PM to give them cover to return to parliament. They need to be humble and do the right thing. Dr. Bernard Wilshire, Dr. Para Reviere, Ron Green and Mrs. Judith Pestaina would be heavy weight Senators and would elevate the level and content of debate in Parliament. Is the MRD being used by the UWP to advance their party’s narrow interests? Will UWP focus on building their party or on maintaining the coalition? These are challenges the UWP needs to face while maintaining party unity and a loyal base.

By the way, if there is a by election, can UWP still contest? If yes, the people might still vote them, especially in Marigot and Salisbury

May i remind ALBERT P. that the only way Ron Green can sit in parliament is if he is nominated by the leader of the opposition and appointed as an opposition senator. The fact that the opposition haven’t even nominated a leader from their three elected members and refuse to attend parliament to nominate their senators look grim for Ron. He might have to wait till the next election if he succeed in winning his seat or contest the by-election in one of UWP safe seats at the expense of one of their successful candidates, to make it back to the house of assembly.
