Green rejects suplementary budget estimates

Opposition Senator, Ron Green, has flatly refused to accept Government’s supplementary budget estimates which were presented in Parliament on Thursday, describing it as abusive and which doesn’t reflect the country’s needs.

“Madame Speaker I am not prepared to support these appropriations because I feel it is an abuse and a non-reflection of the real needs of the country of Dominica at this time,” Green said.

Green is particularly livid that the government has allocated $760,000 to what the estimates described as “to provide housing assistance to various homeowners.”

“Again if you will be well aware of the situation regarding the housing situation in the Kalinago Territory and here we are getting $760,000 spent on housing and we are not given any details,” he argued.

Recently former United Workers Party deputy leader, Claudius Sanford, raised concerns over the government’s housing project in the Kalinago Territory saying that people who are in need of housing assistance are being denied for political reasons.

According to Sanford the housing distribution is focusing “on the support base of the Dominica Labour Party and as such there are concerns about whether the housing needs of the people are being met.”

Green noted that the move by the administration in the estimates is disregarding the island’s local governments. “It says to provide housing assistance to various homeowners without any details and again disregarding our local governments who are elected authority of the people of the villages of Dominica and they are the ones who are aware of the specific,” he pointed out.

The supplementary estimates of expenditure amounting to $11,634 480.03 are for the period July to December 2012.
