Hector John on International Visitor Leadership Program in US

John

In the past few months, several Caribbean citizens have joined the group of hundreds who have benefited from U.S. sponsored educational and leadership programs over the years.

The two most recent beneficiaries are Devon Rachae from Grenada and Hector John from Dominica, both of whom are currently in the United States as fellows of the International Visitor Leadership Program of the U.S. Department of State.

Mr. John, leader of the opposition United Workers Party in Dominica, and Mr. Rachae, a former opposition Senator in Grenada, are participating in a three week Multi-Regional Program (MRP) on “Accountability in Government” along with 23 other professionals from around the world. The program, which is running from September 4-24, will take participants to four cities across the United States, starting on the East coast in Washington, DC and ending on the West coast in Seattle.

Messrs John and Rachae, along with other participants on the program, will examine the role and structure of ethics in government in the United States and explore best practices underlying transparency and accountability.

During the course of the MRP, they will also compare the approaches of ethical conduct between the government and the private sector in the United States through meetings with officials of federal, state and city governments and a range of non-governmental organizations dedicated to transparency and accountability.

The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is the Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. The program brings together emerging leaders in their respective professions to learn from how U.S. experts in this profession operate, and to share best practices with the other program fellows who hail from the same region and across the globe.

The Americans think they are smarter that the average Dominicans? Hell no! They are using all types of strategy to derail the labour party government, but that will not work. Recently we heard of WIKILEAKS with a set of bogus information about the governmant which was provided to the US embassy by members of the Workers Party. We heard of Sanford getting scholarship from the US embassy, now Hector John on programme sponsored by the US embassy. These cant be co-incidental. Labourites beware. They will use every little trick in the book, but lets remind them “We aint stupid”

The US, tired with Roosevelt Skerrit, is now positioning Claudius Sanford and Hector John. This is so easy to see! Afterall, the closeness of Roosevelt Skerrit to Chavez and other socialist leaders is not going down good with the US!

    September 14, 2011

    Those criticizing him,
Did not the Honorable Hector John get more votes than Skerrit did on the election of 2009 and on the 2010 bi election?
    Isn’t this despite:
    1. The influx/importation of voters from off island?
    2. The large number of Haitians living in that community who had their registration fast tracked after the earthquake in Haiti but before the Bi election?

This is actually good for Hector. I have heard him speak on some occassion and the guy has potential, just some polishing here and there.

I just think it was unfair to make him leader of the opposition. As someone said in another post it was like giving him a driver’s license before learning to drive.

Additionally I wish Hector could get more involved and be more assertive in the political life of the country. Just having a title is not enough.

    Good luck.

My Gosh people your ignorance is baffling. He is developing himself professionally. As a matter of fact our present government should learn from that and encourage and or provide opportunities for professional development for all its members. That will be a definete plus for the government. Lots can be learnt in courses such as this.

In an effort to put in youth in leadership, like DLP did, the UWP sort of shoved mr John in that position. I really believe he should have declined the position at this point and should have used the opportunity right now to gain experience in opposition and in the house of assembly.
Courses like this will help him be a better leader in the future.

I am wary of the ulterior motive behind this…… A possible grooming for a US mole? A regime change stooge in waiting? US does this all the time. They boost the unpopular losers of the world and get them in power to do their bidding when the time is right for them.
Should I now say congratulations? Hmm, I think not at this time.

      September 13, 2011

U might get thumbs down from the ignorant but your comment is a very enlightened and sensible one.

After reading the Wikileaks release on how the US views Skerrit and disapprove of his alliance with Chavez, there is no doubt that the US would prefer a UWP government in D/a.

I can see your point, especially as one of the topics is accountability. Accountability to who.
I would also like to say congratulations, but I dont feel that this is being done with the best intentions. After all the course is geared on how things are done in government in the U.S.
