Isaac highlights need for drug rehab centre

The United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for the Roseau Central Constituency has highlighted the necessity for establishing a drug rehabilitation centre and for important improvement works to the city.

Joseph Isaac also criticized the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) Government for disbursing money to buy votes and seeking to undertake new projects whilst failing to improve what is already in existence.

Isaac supported the UWP Leader, Lennox Linton who had earlier stated that a UWP government will partner with and take lessons from Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to provide services that would improve the lives of Dominicans.

Isaac noted that there are many people struggling against drug addiction.

“You don’t need a politician driving that process of recovery,” he said.

The UWP will facilitate the establishment of a centre which can then be operated by an NGO, he added.

Isaac revealed that the a UWP Government will provide a drug rehabilitation centre which he said is needed, in Roseau Central, Roseau North or Roseau South.

Isaac is also concerned that Roseau is not friendly to people with disabilities, in relation to infrastructure and outlined plans for a renewed Roseau that will include elements designed to make life easier for the disabled. Such features will include ramps and proper sidewalks

“…not on a sidewalk where you have holes on every part you pass,” Isaac added.

He referred to a tour that the UWP did of Roseau on October 12, noting that the needs of the city are glaring. He pinpointed the E C Loblack bridge into the city, with broken slabs. In fact, one slab is missing, leaving a gaping hole in the bridge.

Despite the obvious and poignant needs of the city, the DLP has embarked on a political campaign to keep themselves in power by distributing handouts, Isaac remarked.

“Look at Roseau….as you are walking on the sidewalk you will see grass is growing in the drains and on the sidewalk….imagine you coming into Dominica as a tourist entering our city. How would you feel? So why are we so surprised…that Carnival Cruise Line has pulled out?”

UWP Government to take the politics out of the social welfare system.

Isaac said the UWP will undertake a social revolution, based on a genuine desire for change.

He said that the social revolution will be comprehensive, taking into consideration price control and the cost of living.

Isaac said a UWP Government will also depoliticize the social welfare system.

“Why should a young lady or young man have to go to beg a politician to get support for their children? All this should be placed in state organs such as the relevant ministries,” he said.

Bonti Liverpool has been rehabilitating drug addicts and alcoholics for years now at the Scout Headquarters under very trying circumstances. Whichever Government in power should look at what this man is doing and build on it.

As a professional chemical dependency technician you witness many addictive behavior patterns in addicts. So too it appears with politricksters. Watch you now and keep vulnerable adults protected and safe out of a true compassion for them…not votes

There is a Roseau Town Council, now called City Council. You have a mayor. What is the responsibility of the mayor? Is it not also to ensure that the streets of Roseau are clean, free of garbage and to take care of the sidewalks as also to repair them and keep them properly maintained? The grass on the sidewalks/streets should be rooted out, never to grow again.
I would think the Mayor of Roseau would also do her part. This should not be the responsibility of the PM. Granted, the PM should be informed about it and allocate sum funds to the mayor for revamping the streets and sidewalks of Roseau and keeping them clean.
In an article on DNO, the PM spoke about repairing/reconstructing the streets of Roseau, making Roseau a beautiful town. This is not the primary idea of UWP, this politician.

Whether or not the United Workers Party forms the new government, a drug rehab center must be a priority for any government. We cannot continue to tolerate the destructive nature of substance abuse and mental illness to rob us of young people who could be making a valuable contribution to our society. Government needs to put the infrastructure in place for NGOs to rise to the challenge of providing much needed human services to those who are in need.

Roseau is suppose too be the centre of Dominica. Thats where the visitors dock, so when they see the main centre of Dominica all they are going to do is get back on the boat and never come back again.
Grass growing in the drains, and no traffic lights.

Irrespective of political party affiliations, I sincerely hope that this gets done. Adding a functioning Drug Rehabilitation Center in Dominica will be a valuable asset to our Human Resources on the Island. It will afford those who have made mistakes or who suffer from addiction, a chance to work on their individual issues with dignity and pride.
Making fun of those with substance abuse issues and calling them names like (Paros) while offering zero solutions is out of step with the times. Let’s get this done quickly.

I did not read the whole story but I do think you are right by now we should have some place where we can actually say that’s a place people can go to get back to being a human again. Also there should be an underage place to house these kids who commit crimes and not let them be around hardened criminals at Stockfarm.

Boys will be boys. Don’t you think you are putting the cart before the horse. My friend wait a few more months to be elected. The facts remains we all have positive plans, we think or ourselves and our ego as big as the sky. In other words, you sound boring and wishee washer. Stop wast your time by thinking you could pave. DA streets with gold.

I disagree with you, someone must have a vision, if you don’t have a vision it will never happen. Martin Luther King said I have a dream. Let it go from there.

The rehab centre for drug addicts was written about since last year or the previous year. I, for one stated it on DNO. A few others also made similar comments. UWP is not the first one. Who is borrowing or taking the ideas of others and claiming them as his own?
