Isaac says opposition supports CBI but has issues

Isaac spoke in parliament on Friday

Member of Parliament for the Roseau Central Constituency, Joseph Isaac, has said the opposition United Workers Party is in support of the much talked about Citizenship by Investment Program (CBI) but has issues with transparency, accountability and due diligence.

Speaking in parliament on Friday morning he also said the opposition is in support of most of the government’s social programs.

He described the CBI Program as just one source of financing and pointed to the issues the opposition has with it.

“Again we want to place on the record, what we have always said, that we have issues with the transparency, we have issues with the accountability and also we have issues with the extent to which the due diligence process has been achieved by the government,” he stated.

He pointed to a recent speech by Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, where, according to Isaac, he said there is a need for improvements in the program. The speech he was referring do was done by Skerrit in February where expressed regret over events pertaining to some people holding Dominica diplomatic passports.

“That is what we have been saying,” Isaac stated.

He also noted that the government has done “significant work” in terms of its social programs.

“Madam Speaker, I would say, the Dominica Labour Party administration led by the Honorable Roosevelt Skerrit, I would say, has done significant work in regard to the social program, to some extent, I would say in some instances, going too far and we again make them understand that we support most of the social programs,” he said. “So that when an elderly person come for support, we have no problem with that, Madam Speaker, and it is a good move Madam Speaker when the Minister of Finance is doing such things. So we support that Madam Speaker.”

Isaac added, “I want the Dominican people to understand that I maintain my integrity when I say 99 percent statesman, one percent politician … if it is good, say it is good, Madam Speaker.”

Wow, never thought I would see the day! Lennox may not have been too pleased with these utterances however.

  4. May 29, 2017

Lies! If the UWP was in support of the government’s social programs, Linton would not constantly and continuously belittle and undervalue them. Why would he call the young women of Dominica prostitutes, why would he call the elderly citizens greedy, why would he constantly bash the public support program? He doesn’t support anything.

That’s my palrep, the people of Roseau are very educated politically and have always voted for people of integrity and who has the potential to be the prime minister of this country. Eugenia Charles, charles savarin who turned out to be a crook, Norris Prevost who in my mind have been the most loving and caring pal rep ever in Dominica, and now Joseph isaac who is following the footsteps of Mr prevost. MR Isaac certainly has the capacity, integrity and honesty to be the prime minster of Dominica. He is a peoples person and is very enthusiastic and exciting. I don’t remember the people of Roseau ever voting for the good labour party, certainly will never vote for this labour party who does not have a shred of integrity or honesty. ANYONE who at this stage the labour party after 17 years and on it’s way out want’s to contest for the labour party is a FOOL!!!

Hon. Isaac is very mature though. It is not often that one hears a politician giving credit where it is clearly due, especially knowing that he could be shunned by his colleagues. And, it is not the first time he has done that either. Very good quality in a politician. We need more people like that in Government and in Opposition.

My My , this was my exact position when dealing with a certain pro UWP group based in New Jersey, before brother Issacs’ statements, they termed me a Skerrit sympathizer even though i’ve never met the prime minister, in a very anti democratic move i was removed, it was a blessing in disguised for my removal, because you see, clouded minds always seems to be one tracked. Social programs is a must , especially in developing countries like Dominica, the aged, single mothers, rural devastated communities, school children not in a position to grasp certain rudiments.I’ve always tried to be objective In postings, the Gov’t have a job to do in governing, also the opposition have a job in keeping gov’t on the right track , the opposition have a lot of work to do in gaining seats, there by counteracting the continued roughshod ding by the gov’t . With their minority in parliament, the UWP have no other choice but to take it to the streets.Decisions are made from the streets and suites…

When these men/women of integrity speak on matters of national importance, one can clearly see that these guys are more educated, more loyal to country, more loving, more caring, more capable and competent compared to the clowns, and greedy/VOWAS blind bats on the other side..Lack of transparency and accountability are the hallmarks of bad governance which is the epitomy of this repressive and vicious DLP regime..BRILLIANT CONTRIBUTION,worthy of an “A”.

My friend Isaac, I am so happy that you have realized that. Hip hip hooray! Our caring PM has gone the extra mile to assist the less fortunate, particularly, the elderly, and that he must be commended for. A politician must be a humble person. There are times that you have to be stern, however, the people must be priority when making decisions. UWP is on a downward spiral because some of the members have allowed theirs egos to get the better of them. Observe and learn from our dear PM, will you?

    • May 26, 2017

DC educate yourself and stop encouraging hand outs as assistance I would suggest you encourage your PM to create employment for the people on the Island to get to work, and stop using the elderly in you quest to make yourself feel justified, that’s why we have a welfare department within the Government, by the way did you know that or you just love getting hand out .

Nothing skerritt does is of genuine concern for the poor. All this is just cult building so that he can amas his wealth. The world over there has never been a leader of a country who behaves like skerritt, who, when thrown out of office doesn’t have untold wealth statched away.

They way i would have the social services program implemented would be to empower the social services. Ministry of social services, Bureau of Gender (subject to correction). I board which could include members of civil society to ensure that the system is transparent. These institutions plus the board will then report to the ministers and the PM to make sure everything is being done properly. At the moment in spite of the the impact the intention is to make politicians look good, to make them look like Gods.

So both parties support the welfare state and both parties support the recruitment of new citizens from abroad for cash. The only thing that doesn’t fit is the back-and-forth charges of imminent tyranny, mob rule, permanent destruction of the island’s beauty, and incivility in Cricket. If the UWP would calm down and if Labour would act like statesmen, they could surely achieve the desired transparency in government. As it is, though, they cannot even cooperate on this week’s bill, which would not change the fact that Labour will not prosecute someone for giving someone else a ride to the polls.
