Just over $1-million on UWP election campaign

money launderingPolitical Leader of the United Workers Party, Lennox Linton, said the party spent a little over $1-million to finance its campaign during the general election held in December 2014.

He made the statement at a UWP delegates’ conference held in Salisbury on Saturday.

“Your United Workers Party spent $1,212,612 on election campaign,” he told delegates.

Linton noted that the party raised $1,046,673 for the campaign and is now in deficit of $165,939.

“We still owe people,” he said.

He stated that the UWP is satisfied that it was “out spent” during the election campaign.

The other major party in the election, the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), has not revealed its expenditure for the campaign.

There are rumors that the DLP spent $32-million but this has not been confirmed by the party.

Denzil Douglas spent more than the opposition and lost. It is not only money that does the trick. Personalities count.

The parties are supposed to disclose their financial activites for the past election, they are supposed to disclose who and where the fundings came from.
Base on the majority of the comments to this post in is obvious that Dominica will never improve because the citizens are showing how ignorant and stupid they are.

Presently one hospital is closed and another is at risk of closing because of termites and now bed bug infestation and the government spent in excess of $32 million dollars on campaign while the health and well being of the citizens of Dominica is in jeopardy! People when are you going to wake up? We are all in this together, be it red, blue, yellow or green. You all are behaving as if Lennox is the problem, he is not! Take a good look at the country and ask you selves a question.

Lennox is the messenger, don’t hate him for opening the eyes of the nation to the corrupt actions of the government, if you fail to open your eyes, you all deserve what you get.

Lennox, take a leaf from Joshua´s book and read it! Joshua has just shown you what leadership is all about. I must say I respect this young man and I hope in due course he will be the leader of the UWP and the next Prime Minister of Dominica after Roosevelt Skerrit departs. You Lennox, you are definitely not Prime Minister material. Who vex about my comment, it´s really too bad because it´s the true.

@ Tell t Like i is . The Leader, reported to his delegates and other supporters of the UWP how much was spent on campaign which was very honest and his supporters wanted to know, unlike all you leader that will never tell l to all you . He said it at a private function , now it made news , so what ? that had nothing to do with him or the party . All you labourites seem to hate Mr Linton so much that all you cannot even understand an article or a report or accept his honesty, Damn man, give the blasted man his praises. What make all you think the UWP has not moved on, just because they do not accept all you Labourites bull does not mean they have not moved on.

You just telling it like it is……but what is your point….making a noise and a call a point is not quality debate……..what exactly are you trying ot say.
The UWP from day one of Lennox`s election as Leader is promoting Team Dominica, a Team thing NOT an individual thing. Where you think you are nuh, ?????? In the corrupted lead Labour party.
Joshua and the team are new and young in this thing, they have to learn, experience, mature and ready to clean up the mess led by Skerrit and the DLP bandits…
I am proud to be associated to the clean, democratic, decent UWP and happy to ran away from the corrupt DLP

    March 5, 2015

As was stated in an old movie, “Gone with the Wind” which is occasionally re-played. A great movie too. Clarke Gable said to Charlotte (?), “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” For myself, I really do not care.
Election took place on December 8th and is long gone. Yet, the debate pro and con continues. When will some of you ever get over it? Until next election? What a waste of your God-given precious allotted time. It is time to cease living in the past and to move on.
Who really cares how much money was spent during the election campaign? Who has been negatively affected by the funds which were spent? The money was spent and it is finished. You cannot bring it back.
As for Linton, that much money for just driving around and campaigning and only six seats? What a waste of money!

Because the system of governance in Dominica under the Skerrit leads DLP government is corrupt, mature, cannot be trusted……..Rather than focus on what you suggest they engage in passport sales, Haitian visa bobol etc……
      The system is rotten

    • Titiwi
      March 9, 2015

Jack, the govt. makes little or no money from chicken farms.Profits from farming & fishing are tax exempt and because the way produce is sold locally the vat they collect is very limited. They prefer us to import so they can collect high import duties and vat at the port.

      • Titiwi
        March 9, 2015

PS. Jack, let me tell you. Even bottled water imported from Trinidad is cheaper than our own. For a start our cost of electricity and packaging (plastic bottles that we have to import empty) is far too high.

  8. March 5, 2015

Now election is over the uwp must set factories like selling water to other island planting coffee and cocoa, give people employment and stop talking nonesense. We need a chicken farm.

    • JoJo
      March 5, 2015

Jack, we do have chicken farms. I only buy and certainly would not buy imported chicken but the truth is that locally produced chicken costs more than imported chicken. I don’t mind paying the extra because the local chicken is definitely better but a lot of people can not afford that.

Congrats Mr. Linton and the rest of UWP for a job well done. If the elections were FREE and FAIR you would have one it hands down with just over $1 million. That is remarkable compared to over $30 mill spent by Skerrit and the DLP.. It shows that Dominicans are waking up.
Next elections Skerrit will SUFFER A WORST DEFEAT than Denzel Douglas….

    March 5, 2015

‘m glad that Mr. Linton is now elected to parliament to do what he does best; to talk. In November 2014 he predicted a 15 seat victory for the UWP based on his party’s internal scientific poll. He was wrong. He spoke of investors ready to move in as soon as he becomes PM, yet, they didn’t fund his campaign. He spoke of fiscal responsibility, yet his campaign failed to live within their budget and now have about 14% deficit. He and his entourage went all over the world courting Dominicans in the diaspora, yet they blame the diaspora among other reasons for their defeat.

UWP and their supporters have failed to recognize the level of disrespect with which they treat fellow Dominicans on this medium, alone. The “Dumbinacan and idiots” are the very same ones you want to change their party allegiance and financial support. Thumbs up/down has become partisan and not based on truth and logic. For instance, UWP had a voters list of 63 000 in 2000 elections and did nothing about it…

I am not going to say much , but i am just going to give you one example because i realize you are a brainless labourite which is typical of all you . Does the bank give you a loan base on the promise that you will find a job to pay back ? the answer is no . They give you a loan if you have a job and able to repay the loan. So do you expect Linton to get investors to come to Dominica if he is in the opposition ?

Just admit that those who claimed to have international contacts failed to come through for the UWP. Today, they are elected international secretary of the UWP to give them an excuse to reside overseas while collecting a salary from malaway in Dominica. But “we watching them”.

I am the Doubting Thomas, so can we see the UWP Financial Statement? And if their figures are right; why did they get so little funding? Seems to me investors had little confidence in the UWP. Who can blame them? Can you imagine if the DLP had to lose? Crapaud would have smoked our pipe.

By the UWP own analysis people had more confidence in the DLP so they gave them the money they needed to put a good campaign. The same people could have given UWP money, but did they trust the UWP? A bug fat no!! And the UWP must ask themselves why?

DNO how could it be rumours when weeks before the election Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit told the nation that they had $30 Million Dollars for an election, when he referred to it as one of “Shock and awe?”
By the way, we will never know how much DLP spent since it is believed that it is in excess of that $30 Million.

  25. All Foold Day lies
    March 5, 2015

Mr. Linton, you all are going to have to raise another $35 Million dollars come next election, if UWP is going to form the next government because you know as well as all of us know that election in Dominica is no longer about issues, vision, honesty or progress. It is based on how much money you have to buy votes, how corrupt you are, and how many lies and empty promises you can make even to the point of promising people tablets in January 2014, when they knew we were in December 2014. I think this current UWP is too honest and unless they get nasty and dirty like the DLP, it’s going to be hard to win because you know we are DOM-IN- CANS
