Dominica’s indigenous people, the Kalinago, will soon head to the poll elect a new chief and council.

Election for Kalinago chief will be held on July 7 with nomination day set for June 10.

The poll for the council will be held on July 28 and nomination day on July 15, according to chief election officer, Steven LaRocque.

Garnette Joseph is the present Kalinago chief.

Meanwhile LaRocque told DNO that there has been a continuous rise in voter’s registration in Dominica .

He said the number of new registrations has risen by over 200 this quarter as compared to the last quarter.

“We have just completed the second quarter and the registration is quite a lot I must say, it’s about a 1,300 for that period,” he said.

Figures show that the previous quarter 1,100 new voters registered bringing the total for both quarters to over 2,400.

According to LaRocque the electoral office is in the process of putting together a list that will be published by the end of the week or early next week to show registrations for the period March 1st to May 31st.

Charlo never got a chance the last time. Instead of the council working they sat and pressured charlo. Despite his attitude charlo is the man that we need to take stand. We need a new chief and new councillors.

The list that needs publication is the complete one that reflects those eligible to vote, including the absent and the dead. The public should be given the opportunity to protest names that don’t belong.

This election could not have come at a better time for the successful winner. According to UWP, when they get into Government, they promised, the Kalinago Chief will automatically become the Minister of Kalinago affairs. I need not advise you as to where you should put your vote when the General Election comes around. Don’t forget the Deputy Political Leader of the UWP is a Kalinago. You could also have a Kalinago Prime Minister in the future.

UWP is assuming that the Chief will be a non-partisan, independent candidate. Is this really possible in Dominica?
