Dominica’s indigenous people, the Kalinagos, are heading to the polls today to elect a chief.
Polls open at 7:00 on Monday morning and are expected to close at 5:00 pm.
Present chief, Garnet Joseph, is hoping to be returned to the position while past chiefs Irvince Auguiste, Charles Williams and newcommer Jumadine Frederick hope to unseat him.
Auguiste said he is seeking the title again because he is not satisfied with representation being received by the people.
Frederick is hoping to develop the Kalinago people ‘socially and mentally’ and is not satisfied with the ‘experienced leaders’ since, according to him, there has been little or no development in the Kalinago Territory.
Joseph is hoping to be retain the title on the basis of is track record which he said has been ‘very good.’
Williams did not make himself available for an interview.
Prelimanary count of the ballots will take place after the polls close at 5:00 pm.
The official recount will take place on Tuesday morning at the Salybia Police Station at 9:00 am.
