Opposition Leader Lennox Linton has said he is “fearful” and has decided not to attend Carnival activities following remarks made by Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit at a Dominica Labour Party (DLP) public meeting held in St Joseph on Tuesday night.
In his speech the Prime Minister who has been under pressure in recent times told his supporters, “it is fight back time” against critics and detractors, including members of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP).
He also referred to the opposition as ‘traitors’ and told supporters to so name them wherever they are seen.
“I say to you they are traitors! I view them as traitors and I want you to do the same as well. When you see them on the streets, in the supermarket, at a funeral, on a plane or even in their cars, shout out to every single one of them – Traitor!,” Skerrit said.
According to Linton, who was speaking live on privately-owned Q-95’s Talk-on-the-Block program on Wednesday, Skerrit is basically setting up his party to fight.
“Right now…. I am fearful and I am wondering whether I can reasonably put myself in a position where I can go to any Carnival activities in 2016,” he said. “The Calypso Finals is coming up this weekend, there is the National Queen Competition. Am I going to put myself in a crowd of people, a number of whom may have listened to Mr. Skerrit and may be willing to take his advice and come up in my face and subject me to that kind of harassment?”
Linton believes that it may even go further than that, “because some people may feel that they are not getting what they want from the harassment and they might feel they want to harm you.”
Because of that, he said, he has since decided not to partake in the Carnival celebrations this year.
“I am not going anywhere for the Carnival season, I am going to be at home,” he noted. “I don’t know if they are going to be bold enough to come up at my home and shout ‘traitor’ at me, but I am not going to put myself in harm’s way…”
Linton said provocation is against the law, “and I always heard and learnt that ignorance of the law is no excuse.”
“Mr Skerrit knows what he did was an act inciting provocation, violence against us, the members of the United Workers Party…,” he argued. “He is encouraging lawless behaviour against me and other members of the United Workers Party.”
Linton stated that it concerns him that he hasn’t heard a single word from the police authority on the matter.
“It is incredible that a Prime Minister can go in a public place speak to the nation and the rest of the world in those terms about me, incite violence against me and I hear nothing from the Police Commissioner,” he stressed. “I am an elected member of the Parliament of Dominica and the Leader of the Opposition as to the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Dominica, and another constitutional figure issues those threats and incites that sort of harassment, persecution against me and there is nothing that I am hearing from the Police Commissioner.”

They are all dividing Dominica, the politicians should be talking about the increase in crime and how it is affecting the hospitality and tourism industry, how many college drop outs there are and unemployment is on the rise.

I was expecting a breakdown of the amount of monies received to date from the ecoomic programme, but I did not hear that so i think the opposition is on the right tract by asking about that source of income and where it is and how it is being spent. I agree politics can be a nasty game . In my country this type of threats and intimidation is the worst it has gotten . The PM needs to apologize to the state and the Opposition members for his arrogance and out burst of anger . The PM has over the years been under the microscope , if he felt he was or is being defamed , be a man like Byrnns and take the members to court and have them sued . Why use this medium to spray his venom ? What message is he sending to our already high tempered youth population , that they can provoke or attack those who opposes them even though their critic is genuine ? The Prime MInister needs a new group of advisers. He needs people of wisdom, diplomacy and humility if he wishes to be respected as a leader. Those who are whispering in his ear do not have his best interest at heart, and he needs to get rid of them. Alas, such men and women of wisdom are too afraid to offer their wisdom to the PM.
