Low voter turnout mars Roseau City Council election

Residents of Roseau and environment went to the polls on Monday to elect a new council to run the affairs of the city but voter turn out was disappointingly low with none of the three wards registering more than 16 percent of voters casting ballots.

In Ward One, there were 4,055 registered voters on the list but only 531 or 13.09 percent, turned out to vote.

There were 4,122 voters on the list for Ward Two. However, only 649 or 15.74 percent voted.

Ward Four’s list contained 4,014 registered voters and the number of ballots cast were 518 or 12.90 percent.

In Ward Three, three persons were nominated but one pulled out, hence the other two were duly elected and no poll was held in that ward.

Based on the results, Kimara Hurtault, Veronica Juliana Frederick, Albert Dalrymple, Corinthia Blanc, Reah Brumant, Regina Walsh, Daniel Lugay and Irene John (from Ward Three) have been duly elected.

The Roseau City Council is made up of 13 members: eight elected and five nominated by the government.

The term of the council is three years.

Council members, including those  nominated by Government, are expected to elect a Chairman from among themselves, at their first meeting. The Chairman then becomes the mayor.

We all kmow that elections at council level are always low turn out. Moreover the fact that you go out there elect persons whom u know are capable of developing the community, the govt nominates their people and forces their supporter to be chairman . I think if the community recommend persons, The Minister should not throw out these persons and place who support their party. That law should change.

On another note, would there have been so much lamentation had the results gone the other way? In the run up to the elections, the media gave quite a bit of airtime promotion (electronic media) to the “Green Team” and seemingly totally forgot the others. Was that a plan? Think about it.

So the BLUE (uuh, Green)Team lost after some very intense canvassing by high powered elements of a certain political organization and it’s low voter turn out that caused that?? Wonder when last we had a high voter turn out for a local government elections anyway??? Wonder what the headlines will read when the general elections results are in DNO??????

This Low Voters turn out should be an indication to the authorities that Dominica really in need of electoral reform,,Most of the people on the list are dead or Migrated for more than 10 years now,,

When was the last time we had for example a 20% voter turn out at a Roseau City Council election? Roseau Election has always been that way except for the few occasions back in the 1970’s when the parties (DFP and DLP) went after each other to win the heart of the city dwellers. the rut started after the famous Karam’s Council. Since that time it has been declared that the local government elections should be apolitical – says who? In this last election battle, quite a bit of behind the scenes lobbying was done by the politicians.

Well, well everybody come on here lambasting how unkept Roseau is but they don’t even have the foresight and attitude to go out there and elect a strong city council.

Hmmmmm……..disappointing indeed! I hope that this is not a sign that people are not interested any more in the affairs of their city and its governance. But more importantly, I hope that we are not going to see the outgoing Mayor being nominated by the government and INSTALLED in the post yet again as ha been done in the Canefield elections. Let us wait and see how much more Dominicans will take should this happen yet again.

My guess is, the people are tired of voting for “Fat Cats” who eat government money, travel and do nothing for Roseau.

These things are too politically influenced ignoring the choice of the voters in the process. I gave up on that years ago.
