Government Senator Tammy Jean-Jacques who took her oath at Parliament on Monday plans to use her position as an advocate for education.
“I think education is key. I think my educational background played a significant role in getting me here today, and so education would be the platform I’d be interested in,” she responded when asked by a DNO reporter what platform she would choose to champion.
“I’m also open to any other [platform] because I can adapt very quickly and I look forward to whatever platform I’m assigned to,” the young senator was quick to add.
Jean-Jacques said she felt elated about the post and about the fact that she is the only female senator on the Government’s side.
“I feel very good about it. As a young person if you had asked me last year if I thought this is where I would be this year, I would have said no. So, I see it as a tremendous accomplishment and I’m looking forward to it,” Jean-Jacques explained.
The 24-year-old acknowledged this was never one of her aspirations. However, the opportunity was available and she embraced it. “I was asked by persons in Government, and it wasn’t in my life plans, but the opportunity presented
itself to me. I thought about it and I realized that I really could make a contribution and so I decided to accept it.”
Jean-Jacques advises the youth to stay focused and work hard if they want to be successful. At a tender age, she noted her mother taught her to work hard to accomplish her goals and this is the message she wants to leave with the youth.
“You need to stay in school, you need to stay focused, get involved in different youth groups. There’s a lot out there, I think the young persons are not aware of how many there are, but I hope to use my position here to get out the message that we should get involved and really can be positive young persons in this country,” she added.
Jean-Jacques is employed at Digicel and will celebrate her 25th birthday this Saturday.
What do i need to do to become a senator? Be a band wagonist? i have bad knees so i cannot kiss much posterior or suck much. but i would like to be a senator.

Congratulations Tammy…everyone has got to start somewhere and you don’t need to be well known to be well-respected and efficient at what you do. I am happy that as a young person you took the opportunity when it presented itself because not many of us young people would be as bold and daring to take that chance. As a young person, I take this as a sign of commitment, willingness, and determination on your part. You were a pleasure to have a classmate and as a friend. I know that I am proud to have you represent the interests of our young people! Know that you will never be able to please everyone but you have a good, strong head on your shoulders and I know that you will make the best of it. CONGRATULATIONS!*!*!
