New UWP senator told to always display ‘high level of dignity’

New United Workers Party (UWP) senator in the House of Parliament, Monelle Williams, has been cautioned that she should always conduct herself with a high level of dignity.

Williams was sworn in as senator on Tuesday morning and the advise came from fellow senator on the government side, Tammy Jean-Jacques.

“I would like to encourage senator Williams to conduct herself, both in and out of the parliament, with the highest level of dignity and respect at all times,” Jean-Jacaues stressed.

She pointed out that she has been the only female senator in the house since the 2009 election and was happy that the UWP brought in a female senator on its side.

“Senator Williams, I congratulate you,” Jean-Jacques stated.

Former prime minister and MP for Marigot, Edison James, told Williams that she should familiarize herself with the rules of the House.

“This is the highest court of the land. There are rules in this House and I would urge you, senator Monell Williams to be familiar with the rules,” he stated.

Opposition leader, Hector John, told Williams that he hopes she bring meaningful contributions to the House.

“Senator Williams bring to parliament gender balance,” he stated. “She is bright, she is articulate and she will be giving the people of the St. Joseph constituency meaningful representation in the House of Parliament.”

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, told the new senator that if she is looking for leadership and guidance, she should look to the Dominica Labour Party side of the House.

He noted that the absence of UWP leader, Lennox Linton, in parliament as a sign of the party’s “very little regard for women.”

“Senator Williams, I sympathize with you that at a time like this your political leader would be present to urge you along, to congratulate you, to give you that support because you’re coming into the Parliament for the first time,” Skerrit said. “But we are not surprised by this, Madam Speaker, because your party in the Parliament has had a record of giving very little regard to women in particular.”

Williams replaces Ronnie Isidore who has been at odds with the hierarchy of the UWP for some time now.

@I often wonder July 2, 2014 Liz Canada hasn’t helped you become more aware ? All the good debates in the parliament there!
As a former teacher as you proclaim, I wonder what ,how did you teach.
Give someonelse your Canadian citizen ship so he she maybe exposed and become developed and aware. You failed and continue to make use of your presence in Toronto

Apparently, you are an individual who knows a little bit about me–since you refer to me as Liz–but who the hell are you?.

Senator Tammy Jean Jacques’ statement was the most welcoming and respectful of all the remarks made on the occasion of the swearing-in of Senator Monelle Williams.

I could not believe the Prime Minister. No generosity of spirit from him. He showed the small man that he is, unable to get away from the gutter even for three minutes.

It has been over ten years and Skeritt is yet to dump the political mapuis, rum shop talk, gutter politics, political garbage in the garbage bin. Senator Monelle has done nothing to him, why remind her of what happened at her former employment, as though she is the queen of tardiness. Parry once reported that Public Workers lacked the ability to produce, in other words, he lamented the fact that productivity was at a low in Government Offices. If this is the case, Skeritt’s problems should not have been with Senator Monelle Wiliiams but with public workers, who are right in his face.

I watched Roosevelt Skerrit perform in the House yesterday jabbing constantly with his finger and the thumb of his other hand stuck in his waist belt, just Benito Mussolini used to do. . All I could see was like a bully in the school playground, surrounded by his lackeys that must pander to him. Do you remember the type from your school days.? And then so obviously the Speaker indulging him like a favourite aunty, letting him have his say without interruption, with a mild ticking on the fingers if at all whilst she did everything in her power to curtail and frustrate the opposition with her absurd interpretations of her little bible. With no stretch of the imagination can that lady be called impartial. Didn’t you observe her rolling her eyes when Hon. Prevost was addressing the House? Disgraceful, distasteful, despicable! An embarrassment to the country.

This is an indication of a fundamental unresolved juvenile issue which affects his choice of responses. Now that he has slipped through the cracks and became P.M it will continue to be magnified( it cannot only be corrected) treatment for such personality disorders is irradication from office by any means available.

I think that the PM is right in saying what he said about Linton. He may not be a member of parliament but he is the leader of the UWP, in these historic events, a leader should go out of his or her way recognise a difference. Though I will not support the UWP’s disability, I will congratulate Ms Williams for becoming a senetor in the Dominica House of Assembly. Good for Dominica.

Focusing on Lennox Linton during a 5 minute swearing in ceremony is a distraction and is in poor taste, in my opinion. To declare him incompetent and disinterested as ‘Face the Facts” did, is a real stretch. Lennox cannot address the Chamber. He would risk being arrested by the sergeant at arms to even attempt to do so since he is not a member of the legislature.

If Honorable Hector John can command the support of 10 other members of the House, tomorrow, July 2nd, he becomes the Prime Minister; not Mr. Linton. So, why focus on a non issue when the chamber is scheduled to debate the CCJ? The 5 minute ceremony is only procedural. Get a life!

I have come to the conclusion that something is definitely wrong with the PM. How can a none member of parliament speak in the house during a sitting? I think the PM should be given a Psychiatric evaluation because only a mad man is capable of making such nonsensical statement. Ms. Williams, I commend you for giving your time selflessly for your country and the constituency of S. Joseph. I would like to see a debate between Senator Williams and the present parliamentary representative of S. Joseph. A previous post asked for her credentials, let us St. Joenians hear both candidates. St. Joseph has become the poorest community in the island under the watch of the labor party and we need to hear from our present parlrep why this has happened, hence the request for a debate. I think the people of St. Joseph needs to know why they should re elect a labor candidate to represent them in the up coming elections; before Mr. Darroux, there was Mr. Henderson and St. Joseph has become the most unproductive community in Dominica and that is why I think we should hear from both candidates the plans that they have to create a renaissance in the St. Joseph community.

Ms. Williams I know that God is on your side, he has opened a bigger door of opportunity for you that is bigger than the one that was closed a few months ago. keep up the good work, with God on your side all things are possible.

Maybe DNO did not have to choose that particular saying of Mr. Skerrit for this news article–I am sure that this was not all he said–but they have a good reason to do so..

Because a reader like me would wonder how come there is nothing said to Monelle at this special event of hers, by her party leader–Lennox Linton, And so, that is the reason we need to know.

Mr. Skerrit has the right to mention this in his speech to Monelle; no one else should do it but him.

I think something is terribly wrong with the way Laborites think, why should lennox write to the House explaining why he miss the sitting of Parliament when he is not a member of Parliament .How can the Mr. Skerrit say that the absence of the Party’s Leader from Parliament is a sign of the Party’s “very little regard for women’ when it is that same party and its leader who replaced a man for a woman in Parliament. I think Skerrit is loosing it day by day whenever he speaks. He appears to be very disturb and frightened. Mr Skerrit should know that no other party in the history of Dominica except the UWP ever had three elected women in Parliament. Once again I say congratulation Senator Monel Williams, I have no doubt whatsoever that you give effective representation to women ,the youth and your people of the St Joseph Constituency. We are still waiting to know her credentials. We already know she is a woman which is quite obvious. Can she also spell and write properly and also prepare an excellent script without the help of others, at least basically?

    • Dorival John
      July 1, 2014

Here we go again, commenting on something you have no idea of.

Monelle gave the best speech at the UWP rally in Londonderry. Her speech was highly praised, even by detractors. And her credentials have been published in the media.

You sit in Canada, knows nothing of what is going on in Dominica and yet pretends to know everything and even go as far as insulting people and even DNO.

Why don’t you come to Dominica and see what is going on before you comment. Or just shut up.

      • JoJo
        July 1, 2014

Hear, hear. Ms. Williams’ speeches are all crafted by herself, it all comes from her own mind. She is a natural talent and the opposition are lucky to have her in their camp. Dorival is right. You’re sitting there in Canada, pontificating on things you have no knowledge or experience of. At best you are a nuisance, at least an irritant.

    • I wonder why
      July 1, 2014

Don’t be a hater, does being a senator require a high school diploma or a college degree? Look at all those educated people on the government side; what are they doing? They cannot even articulate a simple word. Give the woman a break, credentials or not she stepped forward to offer her service for her country what have you done.

I cant help but to call you fulllllllll that’s how this pm have you and the rest that think after him there is no more the pm is the only young person in Dominica this days but his time come to go

    • AJ
      July 1, 2014

And am wondering if you yourself have some wisdom. You appear to lack sense. If she could not spell she would not have been delivering those speeches at such high quality on the UWP platform. That’s the only thing some people good at; bringing down people . Give people their credit where they earn it ..SMH

Funny you should ask that when your leader depends on a baja man to write a simple speech for him to inform the nation of the date for election.

      July 2, 2014

Oh please, Mr Obama who is an orator does not write his speech himself. I little kaka wat have written many speeches, for four different Ministers, including the PM and acting PM. So you comments does not hold any water.
People have very good ideas that they can articulate but they may not be able to put it on paper the way they want to.
      Get your understanding in order.

“Senator Williams, I sympathize with you that at a time like this your political leader would be present to urge you along, to congratulate you, to give you that support because you’re coming into the Parliament for the first time,” Skerrit said. “But we are not surprised by this, Madam Speaker, because your party in the Parliament has had a record of giving very little regard to women in particular.”    TO DIVIDE AND TO RULE, WILL ONLY TEAR US APART. SMH on the pm.

If uwp had little regard for women, Ms. williams would not be in the position that she is in now. and for your info she’s highly endorsed by Mr. Linton. He spoke about it on q95.

    good.

Lennox Linton has won the hearts and minds of so many people that those people already know that whenever he is absent fromn functions like these, it is for matters THAT ARE ABSOLUTELY AND TOTALLY BEYOND HIS CONTROL. It’s not like Skerrit leaving the country and no one knows where he is going to on their tax money, Is it Vanuato, Cayman Islands, Venezuela, Macau, etc OR like Skerrit being asked a simple question and telling the people ” Go To Hell”…I am sure if Linton was given the opportunity to respond to Skerrit on the spot he Skerrit would stay MOO MOO, because he knows that compared to Lennox he is an accomplished DUNCE CAT, and Linton would treat him as such.
Is it that Skerrit is jealous of the type of candidates that Team Dominica is attracting? Is it that he does not know that Monell WOULD NEVER EVER join such a Labour Party? Why can’t he go to school to learn that?.
But nothing can stop the change that is taking place.
Skerrit can try clutching at straws. IT CANNOT WORK!
Linton will remain an advocate against WOMEN ABUSE AND INSULT,IN DOMINICA AND THE CARIBBEAN, AND THIS is resonating well with the electorate? Are you jealous Skerrit? AND NO ONE CAN STIOP THAT!
    HOW LONG?
    NOT LONG!

    • July 2, 2014

Mr. Linton will never allow himself to fall into any trap of the PM and his supporters never,! Whenever Mr. Linton is not around it’s because he is out there doing business on behalf of the people of Dominica and Dominicans Ok.

Congratulations Monelle Williams! Dominicans and women in particular are looking up to you, You’re an inspirational powerhouse, and the Almighty will continue to bless and guide you.

You know what good leaders are made of. So it’s pointless that those who don’t have it tell you where to look for leadership. We know too well by their behavioral history that they lack the basics when it pertains to leadership.

  42. July 1, 2014

Women are not easily swayed, mind you. Who rules the World, WOMEN.

Excellent position, MONELLE. Put it to GOOD USE. SERVE YOUR PEOPLE RIGHT.

@Citizen – Since YOU claimed that it is women who run the world, is that the reason why the world (which you say women run) is in so much trouble of all sorts these days?

 Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, told the new senator that if she is looking for leadership and guidance, she should look to the Dominica Labour Party side of the House. Roosevelt Skerrit just does not know how to express himself fluently and/or coherently. He is like a fat kid in a cake shop! Go Monell, show mister how it’s done! Show them some St. Joe pride and joy.

The PM cannot even bring himself to say congratulations. What statemanship. Even in absence he cannot help talk about Lennox. I think skeritt goes to bed and wakes with Lennox Linton on his mind. Be patient Mr. Prime minister you will soon have Lennox in the house. Hopefully the labour party will appoint you a senator when you lost your seat to Birmingham. If you so confident call elections tomorrow.
Guess you cannot believe a half and half is now in parliament. Don’t worry you will not believe it when you voted out. Dominica and its treasury does not belong to u.

Her you go SKerro trying to put a division between the young lady and Linton,Linton am sure has a good reason why he is absent. When you live in a glass house dont throw stones.Due respect to you Ms.Williams am sure you will do an outstanding job representing the people of St.Joseph, not what i have seen by the incompetence of the sitting minister.Keep your head high always and let no one keep your morals down.Good luck to you.

The P.M. remark were full of sarcasm, what a shame. Of course, they would like to have someone like miss Williams on their side.because they have no one that can match her style or caliber. But maybe mr. Skerrit would be scared for that too because she would rival him.

I think the Prime Minister is correct when he said that linton has no regards for the women in this country, truth is truth, and must be spoken,, where is he toendorse this young female sanator hmm?? Is this the right way to present your senator?? Gush man!! What good reason can he have not being for not being there? In such an important time in miss William life?? Tell me.. And if there was a reason , he could have given in writing so that the house would see a level of responsibility in him..

Your dam HYPOCRITE AND smoked brain. How many times have you asked Where is Skerrit, when he disappears out of state and his secret trips are being finacnced by tax payers money? Is it that you were scared that he would insult you? Can you remember the “Go to Hell”, said to puppets and crumb pickers like you THREE TIMES?.
Lennox is such a statesman, that most of us do not have to even ask. ONCE HE IS ABSENT, WE KNOW THAT IT WAS JUST NOT POSSIBLE.
Monnel knows that. Go ask her to get the kind of reply a soon to be government minister will give to you. Make sure you won’t hear “Go To Hell”.
I GUESS LINTON IS ADVOCATING AGAINST WOMEN ABUSE SOMEWHERE . No wonder that he is so loved.

What the PM stated is correct . You are always quick to criticize the PM and not Linton, your god whom you exalt no matter what he does as if he is never wrong and can do no wrong.
Who is incompetent? Why is Linton not present? What reason he had not to be absent and when a new UWP senator who was obviously approved and appointed by him was present in Parliament for the first time for her swearing-in ceremony. It appears that he is the incompetent one who is disinterested.

        More flapping of gums.

Lennox is not a member of parliament, so he won’t be seen in the chambers. Did Skerrit look in the visitor’s area where non members of parliament sit during parliamentary proceedings? Do you or he knows if Lennox was in there.

Sit you rear end in Canada without knowing zilch and talk. Geez, everyone is tired of you already.
