Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan says members of the Opposition have displayed a level of hypocrisy as it regards to their calls for Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to resign over dual citizenship claims.
Speaking at the Red Day event at Macoucherie Beach on Sunday, Astaphan said that he had documents to prove that at least one top member of the opposition had travelled for 15 years as an American citizen.
“I have before me, the travel history of Ronald Green. I am gonna take my time with this one because I want you to understand the dishonesty, the hypocrisy, the malice, in them fellers and that’s why we must never turn our back on them. We have to watch them in their eye, toe to toe and nose to nose… and blow for blow we gone let them know that we ain’t going nowhere,” he said.
Astaphan said, “This man has travelled for 15 years as an American citizen on five different travel documents and he has the guts to come and say Roosevelt Skerrit must resign. And his family members are not speaking out about him and the Q95…are not saying nothing about him.”
“Five different documents, and on every single occasion he filled in his ID card – where he landed, where he was going, as American,” he added.
Astaphan said this information was obtained from the ID cards that Green filled out and handed in to immigration at the airports during his travels.
Green had announced earlier this month that he renounced his US citizenship prior to the 2009 general elections and that he did not acquire his US citizenship “of his own hand”.
“I did have US citizenship but it was not of my own hand. And [out of caution] I renounced US citizenship prior to the elections of 2009 and I don’t think we should be shifting the topic and getting off topic. The topic is that the prime minister as an adult, as a minister of government, fully conscious, because it had been well known, went ahead and took citizenship of France,” Green said on the radio programme.
Investigative journalist Lennox Linton has revealed that Skerrit renounced his French citizenship on Feb. 5, 2010. Linton revealed this revelation during his Between You and Me programme on Q95 on December 11.
Linton read the supporting documents, written in French, on air. He also read it in English.
The document, according to Linton, also revealed that Skerrit acquired French citizenship on April 8, 2003 while still a minister of government.
A case contesting Skerrit’s dual citizenship is currently before the court. And Linton questioned why Skerrit renounced his citizenship in 2010 if he was a French citizenship since 1972. The journalist also questioned why the court is taking so long to move forward with the matter.
The entire issue stemmed from the UWP’s decision to take the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) to court after filing several petitions against the party in January, citing what they claim to be gross irregularities in the conduct of the December 18, 2009 general election polls.
Among these petitions were claims that the DLP had allegedly bribed persons to vote and had blocked the UWP’s access to state-owned media during election campaigns. These were later struck out by a high court and are being appealed by the party.
One petition was allowed – this relates to the prime minister’s dual nationality. It alleges that Skerrit contested the elections illegally as he holds dual citizenship-a practice which is not allowed under Dominican law.
Skerrit was born at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau, Dominica on June 8, 1972 to a French mother, who was born in Guadeloupe.

Sometimes I wonder why we all behave in a particular way? Of course its human nature. Many of us see nothing wrong with the PM being accused of having dual citizenship, while at the same time to demean Ron for whatever.

Astaphan can say what he wants that does not prevent Mr. Skerrit from facing the courts and that does not change the fact that Mr. Skerrit broke the law. If a driver fails to stop at a stop sign and that does not mean that one who gets caught can argue that Mr XX did it also and was not penalized. Some peole are more fortunate than others to break the law and get away. However wrong is always wrong.
Mr. Skerrit should now pass a law to say that one who is forced to resign from parliarment because of dual citizenship can run for re-election if he revokes his foreign citizenship.

I do not know anything about this Astaphan man, but somehow, everytime I read something of his opionion it makes me nervous. I just do not perceive an authority of wisdom in him, to defend the Prime Minister.
I definetely would have felt better if he had said something different pertaining to the dual citizenship issue. Better still if he had said nothing about it at all; as sometimes, silence speaks louder than words. I know a song that said: “You say more when you say nothing at all” Yes, he should let the silence kill his oponents until the burst-out in the courtroom.

What ever is the status of MR Green, it does not Change the issue at hand concerning the Prime minister. If Mr Green is also guilty, deal with them both. This issue should not be about politicians instead it should be about the people of Dominica and whether we have regard for our laws which should govern each and everyone. No individual should be allowed to serve as a law maker and break the said laws which we would be quick to apply to someone of a lower status. I have always know my people to be a people who stood for something, and others knew Dominican have envied for or strong resolve. We need to keep true to what has been unique to us as a people and stop being loyal to individuals. No one in Dominica should be above the law and because of the Pm’s denials while he was campaigning we should send a strong message to others that as a people we will not accept such. So I would like to advice that we take this very seriously. Mr Astaphan is not dealing with the real issue, he is trying scapegoating technique by using that of Mr Green to run from the issue facing the PM, but but as a citizen I think they both should be dealt with if the evidence shows that they have knowing broken the law. If we can’t do this then we should leave other people who break or laws alone, because all they have done wrong is break the law. It should not matter what aspect of the law is broken, the law is the law and we should cause persons to see it as something to be respected.

Justice! I have seen some of the doc against Ron. He was born on 21/11/1940 and travelled to Barbados on a passort on 12/29/2009 with nationality being
American, there are several other travel dates. The question is whether Q95 legal Counsel Mr. Linton will take Mr. Green on that and whether Mr.Spraggs will asked Ron to Resign or have him fired?
If the court rules that the PM has dual , he is automatically disqualified and therefore has no need to resign. That is only for your edification. So no need to use all kinds of adjectives to describe the PM.
One thing though, he will be elligible to contest any by election , which arises out of this matter, so therefore he might be in your face again for another four or more years. Kindly get used to seeing the PM. If you’re so upset please find some nerve smoothing medication to withstand seeing Skerrit.

Is Ron a member of Parliament? Resignation would only be an issue if he was. However, he renounced his US citizenship prior to the last election, so even if he was elected today, there would be no issue.
Yes, Ron is a Member of Parliament (MP). He is a Senator and his vote in Parliament is as equal as that of any Parliamentary Representative. Parl Reps are elected by the constituencies while Senators are appointed; (5) by the ruling and (4) by the opposition parties.
I am quite aware Ron is a senator. I inadvertently left out the word “elected” before “member of Parliament”. My point though is that Ron is not an issue as he regularised his affairs prior to the last elections. At that time there was strong debate on the matter and the PM should have done the right thing then rather than knowingly break the law and allow persons to vote for him (an unqualified candidate) in the process.

All I have to say is Lennox Linton is NOT and I repeat NOT an Investigative Journalist but a mouth peice of the UWP. A true Investigative Journalist normally brings out the good and bad of all sides and is seen to be objective but can you honestly say that Lennox has brought out any good of the Government or any bad of the UWP? I beleive we deal with this matter maturely,let the courts decide, take whatever action is neccessary,put it behind us and move on for the good of this country.

If the Labour Party had filed a counter petition then Ron would be part of the conversation so blame the labour party for not taking up the matter not Lennox Linton. Is Lennox Linton the only journalist who can investigate? Oh I forgot Karmala said he is not a Journalist. Why cant Karmala Mervin or Curtis investigate Ron Green. If they do what will be the outcome maybe you can answer that. The big difference is Ron renounced his own before elections, while the PM was asked about his before the same election too and what was his response, arrogantly ” No law no constitution can prevent me from being nominated as a candidate in the general elections” Then he renounced it after elections

The burning issue the country is now faced with is that Skerritt lied to the Electoral Commission, to all Dominicans and the world when he declared in signing the nomination form for the December elections that he was not a dual citizen. He did possess a French passport Our constitution clearly states that no one should be a parliamentarian or vying for public office as a politician if he/she has DUAL Citizen, especially if that person obtained it of his own accord.
Skerritt in 2003 did through his own volition show allegiance to France by obtaining a french passport. He felt so guilty and knew that he lied at the time that he revoked French citizenship in February 2010. Why did he do that turn around. Skerritt even stated boldly that NO CONSTITUTION, NO LAW COULD PREVENT HIM FROM BEING NOMINATED. Totally, arrogantly disrespecting the Laws of Dominica. In FACT, Skerritt is an ILLEGAL PM of Dominica and that is history in our country’s politics.
Why didn’t TONY Astaphan challenge Ron for dual citizenship? As usual Tony will try to stray away from the REAL ISSUE and that is Skerrit is before the COURT for disobeying the LAW. More history in our political development. Tony, Skerrit, the Govt. DLP Party know that he is in serious trouble. The entire world has their eyes and ears glued on that case.
First Dominican PM who has been involved in so many illegal and controversial actions. We all know them. The evidence and facts are plain for all to see. There are too many to mention here. Examples, The Trafalgar secret land deal, Rubbish Bin Bobol, Fertilizer bobol, Ownership of Villas, Susan Olde, Bogus NGO named Citizen for Better Dominica and the US $400,000.00, David Hsui, Felix Chen, US$20,000,000.00 investment in Layou River Hotel, Dominica’s 51% shares and the BVI case, dabbling with Rudolph King now in US jail, Million dollar Pyramid Scheme, and so on and so on. LIES, LIES. and MORE LIES.
Many people, including you have shown deep love for such persons. No surprise. Papa and Baby Doc were also loved by many during their dictatorial rule in Haiti. We are up against a flawed document… nowhere in the constitution is it stated that dual citizens can’t serve in parliament. As a matter of fact the constitution condones dual citizenship as it relates to citizens of commonwealth countries. You don’ have to swear any oath of alligence to get a passport. Swearing allegence to a foreign power does not only apply to citizens or adopted citizens, it can also apply to holders of green cards. Green card holders can serve in the military of the USA, and they are required to take an oath to defend and protect the USA against all enimies both foreign and domestic….So we realy have to wait on the courts decission.
Yes, I remember how for a long time them uwps could not pay civi servants when month end come and the shops had stopped giving civil servants credit.

Can someone investigate Ron Green to find out if he is receiving Social Security or benefiting from any US social services such as Medicare etc. since he renounced his US citizenship? Wouldn’t that be illegal if he were? Can Lennox Linton investigate that or integrity only applies to Mr. Skeritt? I hope Ron knows that DA is looking at him so the next time he visits the US ….say for treatment, he identifies himself proud DA citizen. I know that Tony has all that under control because we will not tolerate the pot calling the kettle black.
