Opposition displayed hypocrisy in calls for PM to resign – Astaphan

Astaphan

Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan says members of the Opposition have displayed a level of hypocrisy as it regards to their calls for Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to resign over dual citizenship claims.

Speaking at the Red Day event at Macoucherie  Beach on Sunday, Astaphan said that he had documents to prove that at least one top member of the opposition had travelled for 15 years as an American citizen.

“I have before me, the travel history of Ronald Green. I am gonna take my time with this one because I want you to understand the dishonesty, the hypocrisy, the malice, in them fellers and that’s why we must never turn our back on them. We have to watch them in their eye, toe to toe and nose to nose… and blow for blow we gone let them know that we ain’t going nowhere,” he said.

Astaphan said, “This man has travelled for 15 years as an American citizen on five different travel documents and he has the guts to come and say Roosevelt Skerrit must resign. And his family members are not speaking out about him and the Q95…are not saying nothing about him.”

“Five different documents, and on every single occasion he filled in his ID card – where he landed, where he was going, as American,” he added.

Astaphan said this information was obtained from the ID cards that Green  filled out and handed in to immigration at  the airports during his travels.

Green had announced earlier this month that he renounced his US citizenship prior to the 2009 general elections and that he did not acquire his US citizenship “of his own hand”.

“I did have US citizenship but it was not of my own hand. And [out of caution] I renounced US citizenship prior to the elections of 2009 and I don’t think we should be shifting the topic and getting off topic. The topic is that the prime minister as an adult, as a minister of government, fully conscious, because it had been well known, went ahead and took citizenship of France,” Green said on the radio programme.

Investigative journalist Lennox Linton has revealed that Skerrit renounced his French citizenship on Feb. 5, 2010. Linton revealed this revelation during his Between You and Me programme on Q95 on December 11.

Linton read the supporting documents, written in French, on air. He also read it in English.

The document, according to Linton, also revealed that Skerrit acquired French citizenship on April 8, 2003 while still a minister of government.

A case contesting Skerrit’s dual citizenship is currently before the court. And Linton questioned why Skerrit renounced his citizenship in 2010 if he was a French citizenship since 1972. The journalist also questioned why the court is taking so long to move forward with the matter.

The entire issue stemmed from the UWP’s decision to take the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) to court after filing several petitions against the party in January, citing what they claim to be gross irregularities in the conduct of the December 18, 2009 general election polls.

Among these petitions were claims that the DLP had allegedly bribed persons to vote and had blocked the UWP’s access to state-owned media during election campaigns. These were later struck out by a high court and are being appealed by the party.

One petition was allowed – this relates to the prime minister’s dual nationality. It alleges that Skerrit contested the elections illegally as he holds dual citizenship-a practice which is not allowed under Dominican law.

Skerrit was born at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau, Dominica on June 8, 1972 to a French mother, who was born in Guadeloupe.

Are we aware that there is a question going on in the states about the President and wether he has the right to be the president? Follow this on …….So-called “birthers” claim Obama is ineligible to be president because they say there’s no proof he was born in the United States, with many of the skeptics questioning whether he was actually born in Kenya, his father’s home country……….

Did Tony ask to change the picture or some other person with Pysco? The original picture reflected the exact moment when and when the words were spoken, that’s accuracy and credibility, but the new picture places Tony in a position of authority, justice and Lord knows what ever that could influence the many unsuspecting and blind Dominicans. Sometimes I wonder why we all behave in a particular way? Of course its human nature. Many of us see nothing wrong with the PM being accused of having dual citizenship, while at the same time to demean Ron for whatever.

On the other hand we make one believe that to go on a crime spree for over thirty, yes, 30 years masquerading as a Dominican, while being an American in our Parliament is ok, once you were not caught during that 30 years?

Is that the legacy we want to leave for our kids and the nation? Shall we all give Ron an award for deceit and tricking Dominicans and award him with a Meritorious Service Award.

Some one will tell me that, that was then. Ofcourse yes, but can one of the bright legal luminaries tell me where in the world has anyone been investigated for an offence or crime that is yet to be committed.

Yes, Ron the PM and the others such a Earl should be asked to pay back to the state all monies they received as Parliamentarians, then and only then will anyone have the moral responsibility to criticise.

Please I’m feeble don’t beat up on me.

Sorry my friend but you are not for justice. This thing has been explained every which way as to why we are where we are with the citizenship issue. Tony is trying to fuel the emotions of those ignorant labourites by deliberately misrepresenting the facts and you my friend who seem to be an intelligent person is jumping on the bandwagon. You and tony know damn well that the refining of the meaning of the clause in the constitution was only done in 2009, so to bring in the question of Ron and Earl in the past 20 years is pure dishonesty.

WHY DO SOME OF YOU ALL DOMINICANS ARE SO DARN STUPID, BRAIN DEAD AND EVIL? MR ASTAPHAN IS ONLY POINTING OUT THE THINGS THAT YOU ALL ALREADY KNOW BUT ARE UNWILLING TO ACCEPT AS THE TRUTH BECAUSE OF THE INHUMAN NATURE THAT RUNS THROUGH YOUR BLOOD. WHEN A PERSON MALICIOUSLY KILLS ANOTHER, YOU ALL BLAME THE DEAD PERSON AND SYMPATHIZES WITH THE CRIMINAL WHEN HE IS ARRESTED. ALL ASTAPHAN IS TRYING TO BRING TO YOU ALL BUNCH OF HYPOCRITICAL JUNKIES ATTENTION IS THAT THE SAME THING THAT THE UWP WANTS TO CRUCIFY SKERRIT FOR, IS THE SAME THING THAT RON GREEN HAS BEEN DOING FOR MANY YEARS AND GETTING AWAY WITH IT. WHAT PART OF THIS LOGIC DON’T YOU ALL UNDERSTAND? AGAIN I SAY THAT THE ONLY REASON WHY THEY NAME THIS ISLAND DOMINICA, IS BECAUSE 75% OF IT’S PEOPLE ARE DUMB. WAKE UP DOMINICANS AND STOP BEING EVIL TO YOUR OWN PEOPLE.

You are so correct 75% of the people are DUMB and those are the 75% who voted for labour party in 2009. It is good to see that you recognise your error, so there is hope for you yet.

Astaphan can say what he wants that does not prevent Mr. Skerrit from facing the courts and that does not change the fact that Mr. Skerrit broke the law. If a driver fails to stop at a stop sign and that does not mean that one who gets caught can argue that Mr XX did it also and was not penalized. Some peole are more fortunate than others to break the law and get away. However wrong is always wrong.

Mr. Skerrit should now pass a law to say that one who is forced to resign from parliarment because of dual citizenship can run for re-election if he revokes his foreign citizenship.

How many of us Dominicans would recommend Tony for political office? I can hear a resounding Noooo. I am confident that 99.99% of dominicans , laborites included think very little of Tony astaphan yet we trust him to manupilate the young man – the PM. Tony has turned out to be nothing but a todler- he keeps putting his feet in the mouth and smear doodoo over sympathetic people. There comes a time when the baby must be trained to use the seats. (Porty Trained )

I am non partisan but tired of Tony’s duoble talking episodes. On one occasion he is blaming the media claiming trial by media and in the same breath he uses the same media to lash out at Ron Green. Ron Green. The sign of a desperate lawyer seeking for a loophole. We have seen a similar behavior in the case involving Bubbles when Heather pushed the issue of ownership. That was a Tony Astaphan Plan.
The PM must question Tony’s motives or even his sanity. Is the PM really getting solid advice from Tony. Based on Tonys unstableness the PM may have to cut a deal. The honerable thin to do is to resign and not drag this issue before the courts. Save ourselves the embarassment.
Tony is about Tony not about this country. He is just looking for another chance to bilk the PM. The deafening silence within the ranks of the DLP tells me that Tony will be out the window should Skerrit resign be it court order or voluntarily.

I do not know anything about this Astaphan man, but somehow, everytime I read something of his opionion it makes me nervous. I just do not perceive an authority of wisdom in him, to defend the Prime Minister.

I definetely would have felt better if he had said something different pertaining to the dual citizenship issue. Better still if he had said nothing about it at all; as sometimes, silence speaks louder than words. I know a song that said: “You say more when you say nothing at all” Yes, he should let the silence kill his oponents until the burst-out in the courtroom.

I prefer to wait to hear the court’s decission than those silly statements, from grown men who are supposed to be educated and trained in their line of profession. It makes me think that the Prime Minister’s case is doomed. According to some of you guys: stupesssse!!!!!

Back then too, you were also aware that former members of the current administration did hold dual citizenship while they were parliamentarians.

What ever is the status of MR Green, it does not Change the issue at hand concerning the Prime minister. If Mr Green is also guilty, deal with them both. This issue should not be about politicians instead it should be about the people of Dominica and whether we have regard for our laws which should govern each and everyone. No individual should be allowed to serve as a law maker and break the said laws which we would be quick to apply to someone of a lower status. I have always know my people to be a people who stood for something, and others knew Dominican have envied for or strong resolve. We need to keep true to what has been unique to us as a people and stop being loyal to individuals. No one in Dominica should be above the law and because of the Pm’s denials while he was campaigning we should send a strong message to others that as a people we will not accept such. So I would like to advice that we take this very seriously. Mr Astaphan is not dealing with the real issue, he is trying scapegoating technique by using that of Mr Green to run from the issue facing the PM, but but as a citizen I think they both should be dealt with if the evidence shows that they have knowing broken the law. If we can’t do this then we should leave other people who break or laws alone, because all they have done wrong is break the law. It should not matter what aspect of the law is broken, the law is the law and we should cause persons to see it as something to be respected.

Because 2 members of the opposition in St Kitts were also citizens of the US. Back then, you wanted to be sure that they did not even get nominated to contest the elections. Back then too, you were also aware that former members of the current administration did hold dual citizenship while they were parliamentarians. Did you choose to give the opposition a break because of the past sins of others. Oh no!

They need to play that tape with you speaking on the issue. Does your view change depending on whether you are assisting the gov’t of St Kitts or Dominica, where the laws are the same in respect of dual citizenship. Stop the hypocrisy as you are now getting what you wished on the opposition in St Kitts last year.

Justice! I have seen some of the doc against Ron. He was born on 21/11/1940 and travelled to Barbados on a passort on 12/29/2009 with nationality being
American, there are several other travel dates. The question is whether Q95 legal Counsel Mr. Linton will take Mr. Green on that and whether Mr.Spraggs will asked Ron to Resign or have him fired?

If the court rules that the PM has dual , he is automatically disqualified and therefore has no need to resign. That is only for your edification. So no need to use all kinds of adjectives to describe the PM.

One thing though, he will be elligible to contest any by election , which arises out of this matter, so therefore he might be in your face again for another four or more years. Kindly get used to seeing the PM. If you’re so upset please find some nerve smoothing medication to withstand seeing Skerrit.

Is Ron a member of Parliament? Resignation would only be an issue if he was. However, he renounced his US citizenship prior to the last election, so even if he was elected today, there would be no issue.

        December 24, 2010

Yes, Ron is a Member of Parliament (MP). He is a Senator and his vote in Parliament is as equal as that of any Parliamentary Representative. Parl Reps are elected by the constituencies while Senators are appointed; (5) by the ruling and (4) by the opposition parties.

        • Anti-corruption advocate

I am quite aware Ron is a senator. I inadvertently left out the word “elected” before “member of Parliament”. My point though is that Ron is not an issue as he regularised his affairs prior to the last elections. At that time there was strong debate on the matter and the PM should have done the right thing then rather than knowingly break the law and allow persons to vote for him (an unqualified candidate) in the process.

I hope you return to read this!!! But what you typed made absolutely no damn sense!! Lets say that it is true the Skerret became a French citizen recently. In my opinion there is only to excuse that he can give 1. He was ignorant to the Constitution and he became a french citizen or 2 He became a french citizen fully know it was wrong. And for both of these reason he should step down!

After seven years of law school almost 20 years of practising law dub a queens council with all that attached to his name Mr Astaphans now tells us that you can do wrong as long as the person before use to do it and if you are the one who did the wrong you should not point out that it is wrong to do hmmm. And my boy calling people hypocrite, this is what you call an oxymoron.

HAHAHAHAH the self made labour supremo speaks. Tony you are just full of too much hatred and bitterness in your heart. You being the supreme legal pigeon or hummingbird (you’re no eagle) for this government just tell Dominicans why it is that the Labour Party failed to file a counter petition againts Ron Greens dual citizenship? Why cry now? Why did the PM renounce his citizenship after the elections, if all was and is well and legal? Your motive is to shift focus from the PM but it wont work because Ron Green is not before the courts. If Ron Green has dual citizenship just as your new Puppet Man like to say “TAKE IT TO THE COURTS” or can you all really do?You said too that Peter Carbon had dual citizenship which was absolutely false, Peter Carbon only had a green card when he contested elections, which is perfectly legal. When will you get over the something that you felt you must have eaten as a young boy that makes you go mad and spew your venom of hatred and lies. When will you find some modicum of courage for once to speak without hatred and speak the truth? When will you get over your hatred for the ones whom you could not have as your PUPPET MEN back then? “We aint going nowhere” you say, well it seems you beleive that you are god too. Its only a matter of time when the father will show all of us who is the REAL SUPREMO. You will one day face your own judgement just like everybody else but will you blame the UWP then, for the great many lies that you have told and schemes of division and hatred you have concocted and perpetuated?

Knowing that he was in dual citizen status the PM said: “No law, no police, not even the constitution of Dominica can prevent Rosevelt Madrad Skerritt from being nominated and elected.”

It is not only that Mr. Skirritt made the highest law of the land of non-effect but he challenged it to do something to him.

What is this teaching our children, our youth about being law abiding citizens. How can Mr. Skerritt govern effectively and uphold the law when he has no regards for the law and in fact makes a mockery of the law.

    God help us all!!!!

All I have to say is Lennox Linton is NOT and I repeat NOT an Investigative Journalist but a mouth peice of the UWP. A true Investigative Journalist normally brings out the good and bad of all sides and is seen to be objective but can you honestly say that Lennox has brought out any good of the Government or any bad of the UWP? Can his work be deemed to be objective?Let me say the the PM might have made a mistake and is at fault if the information released re his Dual Citizenship isuue but I personally prefer to be Governed by a Political Party led by Rosevelt Skerrit that one led by Spraggs John ,Ron Green or Eddison James.Do we have short memories? Can we remember the mess these guys made of their term in office? Do we want to go through this disaster one more time? I beleive we deal with this matter maturely, let the courts decide, take whatever action is neccessary, put it behind us and move on for the good of this country.
The history of this country will never forgive us if we allow those bandits and power seekers who have sprung from the woodwork and playing hero to take over political power of our Nature Isle.

    • truth be told
      December 23, 2010

The subject at hand and before the courts is the PM’s dual citizenship. If the Labour Party had filed a counter petition then Ron would be part of the conversation so blame the labour party for not taking up the matter not Lennox Linton. Is Lennox Linton the only journalist who can investigate? Oh I forgot Karmala said he is not a Journalist. Why cant Karmala Mervin or Curtis investigate Ron Green. If they do what will be the outcome maybe you can answer that. The big difference is Ron renounced his own before elections, while the PM was asked about his before the same election too and what was his response, arrogantly ” No law no constitution can prevent me from being nominated as a candidate in the general elections” Then he renounced it after elections

      Joe Pep,
Are you saying it is right to deliberately break the Law of the land? And that it is ok for everyone to forget the law was broken and move on?
      Come on.
Is it ok for you or your home to be robbed and you decide,,,,whatever,,let the thief move on with his life,,,let me forget about that?

It doesn’t matter who we support or not, the law was broken, and justice should prevail. It is time we as a people do the right things. Let the courts decide.
Who said these words?? he knew…. and he knew….? Well he knew….so let the chips fall.
By the way,,,,wasn’t Tony ASStaphans on a similar case of dual citizenship in another Caribbean Island not so long ago? Now he wants to be on the other side of the fence,,,,two face.
But say all what you want…time will tell

Do you really think for a minute that what the “Solid team” now gaseous, led by Con Edison James (which change DA forever) is any where close to the piracy of this current administration ? Jokers for jokers, a team having toys ministers ln the likes of Instruments- Earl “fugitive”Williams who suggested smoke herring for breakfast for the administration’s numerous guests,Eddie with his inferiority complex.Remember independence speech in Nov,1995, when it was manifested for the world to hear! I was ashame of being D/can then. In retrospect this is mild compared to the in your face corruption of Roosevelt “Crayfish”Skerrit and his band of looters. To say am ashame to be classified as D/can with these guys is to put it mildly.DA has never had such abject poverty of all forms more prominent is the poverty of mind. Our formerly broke ass politicians are now millioners gracias to Skerrit’s infiltration and parasiting on the back of DLP emanating as a young freedomite.
Today we have men who have been looked up to as interlectuals behaving like pimps you know them well and every quanwant too. They refuse to man up and say what is wrong when it shows up .They prefer to remain silent and continue to or join the looters.Joe Pep like chuck dust said you eh get the message as yet.

i quite agree with u tht i cant see hector john as our next PM. NO WAY. but i ask of you this question.

Apart from hector John, ron Green, eddison James, and Roosevelt Skerrit, are there not any other persons on island who can fill in the position of PM?

you said in ur writing that if the info is true the PM made a mistake. i will say this, this was no mistake, he knew and he knew and he knew.

now if this is the case, its not just a mistake but he has comitted a criminal fradulent, malicious, power hungry act.

are you saying, that u are ok with being ruled over by a Liar, a deceitful person, a power hungry person. if this is true.

i tell u what we as a people can do. we can show them that we would rather have no PM than one like Hector John, Ron Greeen, Eddison and ROOSEVELT SKERRIT. wrong is wrong, lets stand for rightiousness.

      I CONCUR !!!!

    • Dual citizen of his own accord
      December 23, 2010

The burning issue the country is now faced with is that Skerritt lied to the Electoral Commission, to all Dominicans and the world when he declared in signing the nomination form for the December elections that he was not a dual citizen. He did possess a French passport Our constitution clearly states that no one should be a parliamentarian or vying for public office as a politician if he/she has DUAL Citizen, especially if that person obtained it of his own accord.

Skerritt in 2003 did through his own volition show allegiance to France by obtaining a french passport. He felt so guilty and knew that he lied at the time that he revoked French citizenship in February 2010. Why did he do that turn around. Skerritt even stated boldly that NO CONSTITUTION, NO LAW COULD PREVENT HIM FROM BEING NOMINATED. Totally, arrogantly disrespecting the Laws of Dominica. In FACT, Skerritt is an ILLEGAL PM of Dominica and that is history in our country’s politics.

Why didn’t TONY Astaphan challenge Ron for dual citizenship? As usual Tony will try to stray away from the REAL ISSUE and that is Skerrit is before the COURT for disobeying the LAW. More history in our political development. Tony, Skerrit, the Govt. DLP Party know that he is in serious trouble. The entire world has their eyes and ears glued on that case.

First Dominican PM who has been involved in so many illegal and controversial actions. We all know them. The evidence and facts are plain for all to see. There are too many to mention here. Examples, The Trafalgar secret land deal, Rubbish Bin Bobol, Fertilizer bobol, Ownership of Villas, Susan Olde, Bogus NGO named Citizen for Better Dominica and the US $400,000.00, David Hsui, Felix Chen, US$20,000,000.00 investment in Layou River Hotel, Dominica’s 51% shares and the BVI case, dabbling with Rudolph King now in US jail, Million dollar Pyramid Scheme, and so on and so on. LIES, LIES. and MORE LIES.

Many people, including you have shown deep love for such persons. No surprise. Papa and Baby Doc were also loved by many during their dictatorial rule in Haiti. You have no shame to be openly telling the world that you prefer those kind of leaders who are accused of wrongdoings of significant magnitude.

We are up against a flawed document… nowhere in the constitution is it stated that dual citizens can’t serve in parliament. As a matter of fact the constitution condones dual citizenship as it relates to citizens of commonwealth countries. You don’ have to swear any oath of alligence to get a passport. Swearing allegence to a foreign power does not only apply to citizens or adopted citizens, it can also apply to holders of green cards. Green card holders can serve in the military of the USA, and they are required to take an oath to defend and protect the USA against all enimies both foreign and domestic….So we realy have to wait on the courts decission.

MR ASSTAPHAN WE EXPECT YOU TO HAVE DOCUMENTS TO PROVE MR SKERRIT IS JESUS CHRIST IF THAT WAS YOUR NEXT CASE IN COURT OK…

LETS NOW PUT OUT THE CHALLENGE……

IM SURE MR GREEN WILL RESIGN IF THE COURTS REQUEST SUCH…THE QUESTION IS WILL LORD SKERRIT EVEN ALLOW HIS CASE TO CALL….WILL ALMIGHTY SKERRIT ALLOW THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM TO OPERATE BLINDLY?

WE ALL KNOW OVERLORD SKERRIT,THE AG,THE REGISTRAR,THE ASS TAPHAN,THE BAR ASSOCIATION HAS SENT MADAM JUSTICE TO CUBA TO GET HER EYES CHECKED AND GIVEN HER GLASSES AND NIGHT VISION TO SEE AT NIGHT….SO JUSTICE IS NO LONGER BLIND IN LITTLE DOMINICA….

SO LETS ASK OURSELVES….WILL RON GREEN RESIGN IF NEEDS BE? WILL OVER LORD SKERRIT RESIGN IF NEEDS BE??

Can someone investigate Ron Green to find out if he is receiving Social Security or benefiting from any US social services such as Medicare etc. since he renounced his US citizenship? Wouldn’t that be illegal if he were? Can Lennox Linton investigate that or integrity only applies to Mr. Skeritt? I hope Ron knows that DA is looking at him so the next time he visits the US ….say for treatment, he identifies himself proud DA citizen. I know that Tony has all that under control because we will not tolerate the pot calling the kettle black.
