Opposition leader encouraged by election results turnover in Antigua

Green

Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Ron Green said his party is encouraged by the decision of the Antiguan High Court judge who declared as invalid, the election of three members of the United Progressive Party Administration on Wednesday.

The UWP also has an ongoing court matter against the Government. The matter which commenced on March 17 at the Roseau High Court, was adjourned to June 17 and 18.

Green said while the matter should have been dealt with in a speedier manner, it shows that justice prevails, even when the circumstances are difficult.

“Clearly it means that the courts are willing to take courageous decisions in regards to information and evidence that they have before them. One thing that strikes me is that it took more than a year for that to happen and that certainly is in the contexts of election petitions being considered to be expeditious-that is a great concern that it took so much time.

Green said it also disturbs the normal flow of governance, but nonetheless it is encouraging.

The UWP has filed five petitions in court, challenging the results of the December 18, 2010 general elections that gave the incumbent Dominica Labour Party (DLP) 18 0ut of the 21 seats which were at stake.

Among the seats being challenged is that of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

Make up your mind, Ron Green. I thought the Attorney General of Antigua was a true friend of the UWP. Why would you be supporting Justice Blenam’s decision and go against the Attorney General of Antigua? You really hungry for power, Ron. Take a hike and get real and enjoy your retirement.

hey !! pple , we must not be unjust . Remember the country is advertised as one without democracy . so mr green and angelo and lennox and them are put to shame that there’s such a thing existing under mr skerrit . or not to forget that we never had an opposition in parliament from since 2005 elections they turn out to be boyscouts because of so much boycotts . now they squating parliament outside of the main house . wat that spells is more misrepresentation and none for those they won .

unfortunately there are young persons…ages ..16…17…18…19… on here engaging in the same crazy attacks on UWP and its leadership for simply expressing their democratic right. They definitely know not what they do. Politics for them is a style. Labour in style so they “in dat”. They have no idea what they should look for in a political party before throwing that kinda support towards it. They don’t read, they don’t listen to the other side, they don’t analyze. They don’t anything about accountability, transparency and integrity in public office. All they know is 18-3 and them nonesense.

Just say “Skerrit” and they will be on here saying “skerrit for life”…”Skerrit is here to stay”…”skerrit doh going no where”…

Just say RON GREEN….and we bordiay…..”ron green senile”….”ron green need to go and rest”….”ron green old”..and a set of bullsh*t.

So the problem in Dominica is bigger than you think. Both adults and youth are engaging in this sort of discuss which will eventually cripple the country to their own detriment.

      But still…Stay Tuned man…

Ron Green needs to focus on his responsibility to the people of Dominica as Leader of the opposition. This responsibility has been neglected in his boycott of parlaiment and hinders the democratic process.
Enough of this election bickering; get on with the job and task as hand; show responsible leadership by formally leading by example!

We all must understand that it is OUR constitutional right in Dominica to seek justice through the courts.
Castigation and ridicule of any citizen for seeking justice through the courts is to relinquish your right to do the same in any matter.

I hope that those persons making fun of Mr. Green et al understand the true issues at stake here. The fundamental right to justice enshrined in our constitution. That’s it plain and simple. Not any election mathematics or hunger for power. Those are secondary.

People let the opposition do there jobs and stop criticizing them! They have every right to do what they are doing if they feel the need to. Based on the comments i read there is like the opposition is the worst thing that ever happen to Dominica. just for you all information, a country needs an opposition and a country without an opposition is heading straight for doom.

      Sensible,

You don’t make any sense. Who are you blaming for there not being an opposition? The Government? Ron, Eddison and Hector were elected to be the opposition but where are they ? In some puppett (people’s) parilament.

You say ” let the opposition do there jobs”. What job are they doing? There job is to be in House of Parliament doing the peoples job so if according to your admission ” a country needs an opposition and a country without an opposition is heading straight for doom”, then they will be the cause for doom because they have not provided opposition.

That’s the sense of the matter.

The people of Antigua didnt go to court on a wimp they believed in their Constitution and Democracy and that’s what it is all about, their are lessons for all of us in that ruling and we the people of D”ica should know that the same ruling could be handed down on us.
I would encourage everyone to start reading the Contitution see what it says be informed this is no time to be uninformed any more this is a serious matter and we all have to be prepeared for whatever will happen come June.

It’s all about the Contitution and Democracy and that’s the Law of the land..

Lets say for the sake of argument the court gave the UWP the 5 seats they are contesting 5+3=8 UWP CANNOT WIN. They need to get that in their head!! Some of the 5 seats that they are contesting were won by over 700 votes, these were not close votes by any means. Why are they contesting them, I fail to understand??!! This is a losing endeavor. The court is not going to give them the 5 seats (IF) they win. There will be a by election and they are sure to lose 1 seat in that by election. There is no rainbow at the end of this tunnel!!

The situation in Antigua is not the same as in DA ,1st the ruling party in Antigua lost seats in the last election. The seats contested in the courts were very close and the polling station for those areas were suspiciously open late so someone could say if it was opened on time the result may have been different. Now lets look at DA , inspite of all the allegations by the opposition two different independent observer group that the opposition asked for, said the election was fair, no poll
was opened late and the ruling party gained seats. The two seats that were close in DA if given to the opposition would not make a different in the winner of the DA election. The opposition need at least 12 seats to add to what they already have to win the election in DA. I have not heard any credible person say with a straight face that the UWP have that much seats. Oh and by the way the party that lost in the courts are friends with the UWP and the party that won in the courts, the party that was cheated in the election, was the ANTIGUA LABOR PARTY. LOBOR POWER

Mr. Green needs to come and compare the facts of the Case in Antigua and those they are actually bringing against the D.L.P and if any one does their research they would find the one similar case that was brought against the Antigua Gov’t is that of bringing of voters from overseas and that matter was not upheld by the Courts. So Ron you don’t stand a chance. In Antigua the strong cases were that POLLS were opened very late on Polling day and while voters were still in line to vote, POLLS were coled on them and many citizens were denied their constitutional RIGHTS…. One of the things you must make note of though is that the Antigua UPP and the Dominica UWP consider themselves sister Parties so they will be suffering the same fate at the Courts and that is; “yo kee’ Pedee.”

  19. Truth B Told
    April 1, 2010

Talk about comparing Apples and Oranges! Is Ron Green unaware of the issues in dispute in Antigua? The main reason for the judgement in favour of the opposition party is that the polls were not open at the correct time and therefore there is a possibility of some registered voters not being able to cast their votes. This is a situation where the mechanism for voting failed and has to be corrected by any means necessary. None of the petitions before the court in Dominica have any relevance to those in Antigua. When will the UWP realise that playing politics and trying to confuse people will not work. It didn’t work during the general elections and it will not work now. Dominicans are too smart!

The Dominica Labour Party Government continues to demonstrate leadership and dedication to the development of our beloved island, while all is malcontents in the UWP just cry and complain and try to prevent our forward progress. If the UWP had any ideas they would attend parliament and contribute to our national development, but they prefer to rest on the sidelines, I guess they are too OLD and TIRED to make any serious contribution.
