Opposition Leader highlights issues affecting Salisbury

Hector John

Better road works and a community center are among the needs of the community of Salisbury, according to Parliamentary Representative for the area, Hector John, in an address to the Annual General  Meeting of the Salisbury Enhancement Committee (SEC) recently.

John, the opposition leader, outlined a number of concerns which he said are hindering the community.

“ Infrastructure development in Salisbury is much needed. We know about our roads. We do not have a community center and you see where we have in our market. So I must say as parliamentary representative, representation has been made on behalf of our community for road improvement… what they going to do about the roads and how soon they can address some of our roads,” he said.

He gave an update on progress made as it relates to securing a building to house a community center in the village.

“… Some advancement has been made in that area to see if we can get a building in the community that is there really to be utilized as a community center and be rented from the owner and move ahead and see how we can get that building structure for our community center,” John said.

He further stated: “Also for the market, I can recall as well some discussions have been made on getting an area in the village for a village council. I cannot talk about it right now because we have not finalized, at least we’re making way in that direction …We saw the Market Day with a Difference organized by SEC …so if we can get that space in the community to enhance, bring that type of  infrastructure to the community, not only used for market, but for meetings and different activities in the community,”

John said the fact that Salisbury does not have a village council sometimes deter projects, since many initiatives have to go through the Coulibistrie and Morne Rachette village councils which normally takes time.

Salisbury Enhancement Committee held its second AGM on November 28, 2010 at the Salisbury Primary School under the theme “Enhancing Salisbury for Future Generations”.

The committee also recently held general elections.

Curth Charles was re-elected chairman while Kervin Vidal was re-elected vice-chairman. Golda Scotland Andrew is secretary after taking up the mantle from Jodie Shillingford.

Dana St. Jean was elected treasurer with Neilton Vidal as assistant treasurer.

Edona Jno Baptiste was re-elected public relations officer – her assistants are Murphy ‘Sye’ Jno Jules (PRO 2) and Pellam Jno Baptiste (PRO 3).

Other SEC members are: Jodie Shillingford, Bertina Louis, Elwin ‘Margin’ Joseph, Curt Louis, Bilary Matthew (new member), Kurt Bruno, Rosian Berridge, Emie Ambo (new member), Titus Moses (new member), Rod Scotland (new member), Conlee Jno Jules, Shannon Vidal, Helen Ambo, Selma Louis, Naiyah Sebastien (out of state), Edgar Jno Baptiste (out of state) Cara Shillingford (out of state), Nisha Durand (out of state).

i agree with you my brother. Whilst Ronnie and Eddoe making rowrow about all can of nonsense and not giving you a chance to talk positively on national issue you leave all that to them and start talking about the needs of your village. Look like you learning what representation is about!

Very good my brother; I am not a UWP-ite but I am happy that you are able to address the issues facing your constituency; it is only by attending and remaining in (not walking out of) parliament that you can show your constituents that you have a voice; please do not follow Ron and Eddo; they will bring you to ur end. They done kill UWP already.

SEC, keep on doing a good job. But, be very careful though not to have any political influence dictate your agenda. Word from the wise, stay neutral and focus on the people and their development.

I must add to that the suggestion by Eyes on Dominica who said, “I do hope that the Salisbury Enhancement Committee will begin to think long term in terms of transitting from Community group to Local Government Council where there will be a Chairman and Councilors and a Clerk. They will receive a monthly subvention from government and be able to access much critical funding.” is a good one.

    Keep working!

I want to share the same sentiments as eyes on dominica and add my 2 cents. Hetor i think it is time you take the bigger approach, you as the parl rep have to realize that your cmmunity is behind you no matter what & i thnk that you guys have to take your affairs to the outside. I know that things are hard all about but i know that there are quite a few bawi passi on the outside that is wlling to help so you have to start doing your ground work on the outside, And try to get to your own funding man.

Let me congratulate the Salisbury people for their continuous support of the Salisbury Enhancement Committee (SEC). Trust me they are more effective than some of our Local Government Councils. That being said, I do hope that the Salisbury Enhancement Committee will begin to think long term in terms of transitting form Community group to Local Government Council where there will be a Chairman and Councilors and a Clerk. They will receive a monthly subvention from government and be able to access much critical funding. I trust that this advise is taken seriously and I am sure if considered we will see a much more enhanced community because Salisbury people are workers, meaning, they are serious about work. Good work Honorable Hector John and members of the SEC

I think A village council would be a great move for Salisbury. It will help augment the capacity of SEC as a CBO!
