Parliament passes insurance act

A view of the House of Assembly

The Dominica Parliament on Wednesday unanimously passed the Insurance (ACT) 2012 which will repeal the old ACT when it is assented to by the President.

In presenting the Act to Parliament Information Minister Ambrose George who was deputizing for Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit told the House that that piece of legislation was “important for the financial sector given all the issues that was happening in the insurance industry.”

“Madam Speaker, this Bill seeks to revise and reform the law regulating insurance business transacted within Dominica as well as private pension fund plans.  The Bill is divided into eleven parts,” he told the House.

George called on all Members of the House to give the Bill their “fullest support” since it was “important for the sector” a view also shared by opposition senator Ezekiel Basil, although he had a few concerns.

While he too expressed the view that the Bill was “important and timely for the Insurance sector” he called on the government to carefully examine the document in the Committee stages and make changes he suggested were necessary.

The House also saw the enactment of the Supplementary appropriation Act 2012 totaling EC$6,113,935.72.

The “Stamp amendment Act 2012”, the “Marriage “amendment) Act 2012 were also debated and passed in the Dominica Parliament.

Aren’t bills supposed to be put before the public before they go to parliament? Someone please let me know. I believe that they are gazetted, but these gazettes do not have a wide circulation.

Opposition senator had some concerns, yet the bill was passed by unaminous vote.

What type of opposition is this.

You are not happy about a bill, vote against it.

Let the record and voters, who voted for those put made you senator, you oppose some aspect of this bill.

Otherwise, you might as well continue your boycott.

And you want people to vote for you, come 2014.

    No chance.

Could someone kindly tell me what the “Marriage Amendment Act” is all about? what does it entail? I sure as hell hope it doesn’t give batty man the right to marry in my homeland.I’m not discriminating nor am i anti-gay/ lesbian.I just can’t imagine giving these folks the right to marry in my country, neither should we recognise such marriages.Memembers of Parliament please tell the nation.

If we were not sooooo busy talking politics we would realise it is primarily geared towards the marriage tourism industry making it easier for visitors to get married here…. it has nothing to do with same sex marriage..

I was just about asking the same question .. Why are’nt details of the act published for better ubderstanding of the details .
It would appear that the main concern is to have “Support ” under any condition .

DNO, Is it possible to publish the bill in its entirety so that the citizens can read and understand the fundamentals of this piece of legislation? We would highly appreciate that. Thank You!
