Leader of the Peoples Democratic Movement Dr. William Para Riviere is dispelling the notion by critics that the opposition will not be able to effectively represent its supporters if it follows through with a decision not to attend parliament.
The United Workers Party has said that it would boycott Parliament in the midst of allegations of bribery and corruption during the December 18, 2009 general elections.
Dr. Riviere said he supports the decision by the UWP, claiming that the opposition must now do all they can to keep in touch with their support base.
“I don’t know that parliament is the best medium for people to keep in touch with their community because given the wholesale nonsense, the character assassination and rubbish they discuss in parliament; I think there are other ways in which a party can keep in touch with its base,” he said.
Riviere is suggesting that the opposition conduct community meetings and educational sessions.
“If the UWP stays away from parliament, then they are not going to be keeping in contact with their support base through the parliamentary debates so they have to devise other means,” he added.
He said evidence suggests that parliament is the least effective way of keeping in touch with the people.
Meanwhile, Dr. Riviere said never before has there been such blatant disregard for the law.
“Opposition forces were denied access to the national media, people were paid money to vote for the ruling party, they brought in plane loads of people to vote and that amounts to fraud,” he said.
Dr Riviere said the UWP’s decision is a principled one.

It is best that PDM & UWP take a look at their politics and go back to the drawing board……I would love to suggest to the UWP (those who won) to go to the house and speak the minds of their people. If you continue to put yourselves out of sight trust me you will be out of the minds of your people and the DLP.
My grandmother used to support Para.She died 60 years ago.Most of his supporters have gone on permanent vacation.might be listening in there grave.

You guys have a problem when people express themselves based on law and fact if it does not agree with your limited and myopic positions. Para is correct and in time more people will come out. As soon as the ‘siwo starts drying up more folks will start talking-, pleanty more.—– Good riddance.

In other words the great DR. is saying that we should get rid of parliamentary debates seeing that it is a place like him discuss rubbish. We should be moving foward as Dominicans no backwards, and to have a DR. giving that kind of advice to his dear friends who should be representing the people who elected them am left to wonder whats next.
What happen to Dr Para Riviere? All there candidates lost their deposits badly. He has to go on political retirement right now for he got less than a hyndred votes in the December 18th General Elections. Not today nor he trying to be a member of Parliament, but he cannot qualify. whether the 3 elites go to Parliament or not the business of the country must continue in the best intrest of the people who elected them.
