IN PICTURES: UWP Youth Rally at St. Joseph

Untitled - 9

This photo was taken earlier today as the sun began to set over the village of St. Joseph where a UWP Youth Rally is now underway.

At the time of posting a number of young speakers as well as some members of the UWP team had addressed the gathering.

Political leader of the party Lennox Linton was yet to make his much anticipated presentation to the crowd of young persons and party supporters.

Below are some more photos taken at various stages of the rally.

I support the youth of Dominica. The future lies in their hands. It will be their world when the now government has passed on. Let’s support all the young people, no matter what color they wear.

    Great Turn out!
    Great Speeches!
    Lennox Linton, Great orator!
For the UWP, this was the case in 2000, 2005 and 2009.
Seas of Blue and another great orator, Mr Eddison James.
However, a huge gathering in 1 location (constituency) may not translate into Wins in at least 11 constituencies.
Yes, the party leader will help his candidates score some points, but can UWP feel confident and name 11 or more seats that they Will Win when elections are called ?
Or more to the point, can they name 8 DLP held seats where they will remove the incumbent?
Ok, I can hear the Uwpites refrain:
    “Yes We Can!”

Congratulations to the youth of UWP and Mr. Anwar. Great job. Can the DLP youth put up such as rally? If they do that would be nice and interesting.

The future is in the hands of our youth- not in those of Austrie, Ron, Lennox or Skerrit. We need them all.

I am not a big political talker but I find DNO has been publishing bias news. Why you may ask? What’s the reason/motive to stay in one position and take out several pictures at various interval. Is either you publish a picture with the news or don’t at all.

While I may not be a big political talker I must say that last election was my first time I voted and I voted the DLP. At this very moment I know that next year if God spare I will not be voting the DLP.

People fail to realize that they are not to vote for someone because they like them, or because it’s their cousin boyfriend uncle. They have to vote for someone who is genuinely looking out for the best interest of the Country and it’s people.

People if you base you comments on what you see — Driving vehicle and house and think is bobol or etc, you probably have not heard about the banks and the Credit Union? They give loans to persons to build their house or expand etc or buy vehicle… I would let some of you see the amount of loans that some person are under to build or buy a vehicle. Some of those person make some ultimate sacrifices to pay their loans.. They do not go to parties like some of you: They do not purchase certain thing that are not necessary like some of you … Their salaries go straight to the bank to pay their loans religiously every month. They even sometimes take loans to buy their children school books and clothes at the beginning of the school year . Then you seat on the side and doing nothing and get jealous of them. Come on I am sure, you have got talents.. you can do something on your own … Crotchet , make clothes, farming even backyard (the Haitians taken over due to the laziness of some of our folks) cakes , ice pop and there are many more and I am sure when you start your little business, you can and will get help (there are organisations doing such) Stop always wanting to buy an outfit every week and always seewoing here there and everywhere … Check your priorities and you will see what steps you will make … Stop judging person by looking at their home and their vehicles… You can start small and save you can have one too. You can order direct from Japan as well… You can save there as well.

Have you not seen that a person who has money is always neatly and simply dressed not those extravaganza that some person like to have etc. Priotorize , priotorize and you will see what headway you will make.

Also some of the things that were said, have already been in place. for example Early Childhood education. I have not been disrespectful but just pointing out certain things. I heard no new things said .. For example criticizing that the Gov’t is subsidizing the college Students… Then later on saying that school should be free… What a contradiction. But one should know that the country cannot run on freeness .. Persons have to pay for services… The public servants have to be paid … When taxes are abolished, where will the money to do projects and pay especially the service persons (civil servants) come from. We need to hear how will the money be raised. Apart from grants from friendly Government and organisations, a country has to raise their own taxes.

Government is a social and service organization where monies are to be raised.. it is not a buy and sell entity where you buy and sell at a profit and you use the profit to reinvest or to pay expenses.

Juggling your brains to think that it is ok to talk but reality is it is not easy to run a country so stop making persons see this as easy as giving them this and that etc. The truth must be told and the young people must read the news and learn by so doing. It is a bigger picture of running you home. If you do not earn, can you spend.

    Just saying!!!!!!

How can one look for family licence for the youth of 16 years to be able to drive? I heard on the air that students of 15, 16 (teens) cannot even follow simple examination instructions. Have you been listening to the news or reading the internet, you will see of many teens dying in vehicular accidents (as many as 6 of them age ranging 14 – 17 years. So my take, driving vehicles is not priority for the young people. They need to be taught Godly principles first. To respect authority; to take their school work seriously: to be able to use their commonsence more; Mental arithmetic in the absence of calculators; to be able to write their Name, addresses etc on examination papers so they will not fail (follow the instruction on the examination paper). They will eventually reach 18 years.

So now, we want those same youth to take their parents vehicle (16 and 17 years) to go partying (when they should be studying) and next we hear of accidents here there and everywhere? The teenagers need to be taught to talk in proper sentences and not those kind of abbreviated words that no one can understand except themselves. People let us get serious with our teenagers … Teach them the important lessons – Love and Respect of God the Father who created the Heavens and the Earth… Respect of the Elders and those in Authority. If they respect the Most High, then there is no way and I mean no way, they will disrespect authority and others.

They will eventually love us for those things taught and mind you they will soon be at 18 so then the drivers Licence.

Partner let teenagers be teenagers – the formative years ….. it is already difficult years for them. Now why put they should drive at 16 years reminds me of the age of consent to 16 (They are not yet adults)

Person who wants vote should stop and take stock of what they say to the youth just for their votes (promises and promises). School is their priority whether the Government subsidise or not.

Now one last thing, remember the monster we create, will come back to haunt us. How can you ask the young ones to disrespect others … They will turn on you if and when you become in authority too. Just warning and giving my take.

I heard person on air call people “veymin and other derogatory names”. What is that?? Would you like to me called by such names if you become Leader as well?

Despite the many attempts by the political handlers and operatives of the labour party (pastors, priests, business owners, etc. ) to prevent and discourage the young people from attending the Youth Rally of the UWP, the rally was still a major success. The young people have come to realize that the NEP is just a political gimmick to get their votes. Most of them understand that this bogus programme is not sustainable and will not solve their chronic economic situation; if anything, it might just get it worse because of what some of them are required to do for that so called job. Tillman Thomas’ government in Grenada spent much more than Skerrit is now spending on a similar programme and still lost the 2010 election. The young people of Grenada saw through this bogus scheme and gave their support to the opposition. I’m sure the young people of Dominica will do the same!!

Since UWP is dying in the Salybia Constituency, Claudius and UWP failed to have a political “train” for St Joe. The few vehicles they had were mostly empty. It was shameful so they did not travel together. When compared to the many fill vehicles in DLP “train” one can confidently say, Casius Darroux IS A SURE WIN for DLP in the Salybia constituency.

One is left to wonder why when Lennox Linton says those degrading things about people of this country and people voice their concern UWP supporter and Q95 tend to be very protective of Lennox saying what Lennox said was taken out of context and when is someone else in the DLP their’s are taken in context by the same UWP supporters.
Just an example; Austrie said, Monelle likes cow meat…Gisel,Q95 and the UWP supporters made an issue out of that until Woman’s Council got involved.
Today, Lennox Linton is spelling out the word prostitution to the youths and woman of the country telling them they are prostituting themselves to MINISTERS of government for help.
Of the above two sayings, which is worst?
    Someone likes cow meat? or
    People prostituting for help?
Lennox knows that a prostitute is a whore..( a noun)
To offer onself or another for sexual hire is Prostituting..( verb)
So what is really taken out of context?

I was there and honestly if there were 1,000 people it had a lot.

I walked through Layou and the place was dead i was disappointed cause when it was the DLP all Layou was pack with people. When i reach St. Joe i literally had to go on the savanna to realize the crowd, all the tents were on the savanna which closed it in so the 700-800 people gathered there would make it look full, DLP had no tents on the savanna and it was full. Outside by the St. Gerards hall had a few people and a lapo kabwit, nothing to talk about say 50 people tops, with the DLP you couldn’t walk without knocking somebody is ‘excuse me please’ right through, i could just walk without touching anyone. getting into the village was a bit difficult because of a small blocko on the street with around 30 or so youth from st. joe, once you crossed that then the village was basically empty easy to walk around. I went up to the church quite easily compare to the DLP that area was impassable the entire road was blocked with people.
Watching the view from the church you could see the true picture of the park, you could actually see how empty it was.

As a photographer i can understand how these pictures were taken to make it look huge but it was nothing compared to the DLP honestly, they had 1,000 tops, good effort though because according to them it was only a ‘Youth Rally’ not a ‘National rally’ so i guess there were little or no mobilization right? So when is the real rally schedule for? That’s what i want to see.

I was not impress at all!!!!!

Based on what came from the rally last night and what has been echoed by many young persons, it is clear that our leaders have failed us and defiled our land. What is even worse about the situation is that no of those leaders one can open their mouth or take any disciplinary action, because it seems as though the entire tree is faulty from top to bottom. What even hurts the most is the way the church has remained silent. The same BIBLE that condemns witchcraft is the very same bible that condemns: Fornication, Adultary, Prostitution, Theft, Corruption and injustice. Where is the church? What are those so called Men of God saying? I know they all have youth group, women’s group and men’s group. Are they not hearing the cries of the people? Have they turned a blind eye and treat it like a lie? Or is it because the gifts they have received from leaders have blinded their eyes? Dominica is in serious trouble and if we don’t change the course we are going in we will regret.

In all fairness, when I compare the comments from both rallies, the ppl who were at the UWP rally spent more time posting comments about crowds than paying attention to the rally.2) the dlp rally photos were smaller.3)UWP comments were more bashful.

I believe we miss the message there; You see labour is more about material things, who can do more, who can give more, who have money, comparing stage (and they doe pay for theirs yet); it was only a youth rally and of course they invited their support – so what is wrong with dat. the adults turned out to support – its all about TEAM WORK. Isn’t sad though that Skerro is not frightened, no fearful, yet still he deploys his men on the grounds to take pic of whose there (so he can victimize next day) get information, etc. Why do that when you believe you are the all strong and mighty.

A number of labourites came in to gather information; there was a difference though, the mepwe and thing labour believe in was not existent. I believe they did a damn good job at planning.

It was indeed a youth rally – the youth was in charge with the support of their family, friends and other team members.

Can’t really see any reason for all the blues excitement. What happen, you guys were expecting a lower turnout or what? Isn’t this pretty much the usual blue crowd anyway? If I may recall, the last major blue rally in St. Joe during the 2009 elections had much more people, yet what was the results??? Secondly (and don’t bring the youth thing because it is obvious this WAS a major rally and not a youth rally. And I know of numerous buses which were paid), What was the demographics? As usual much of the crowd came from only a few areas of the country, mainly Roseau catchment area and a few north-eastern communities (Salisbury being close by obviously factored in). Yet the crowd still couldn’t compare to the May Day sea of red. So it is clear to me my friends that notwithstanding the obvious excitement of the blue paronia, it equation whenever the date is announced will most likely be another 5 years for the DLP. Sorry to disappoint you guys!!!

I think you should take some time out to really commend the youth for such brilliant speeches and for the large turnout never seen before in this country. Forget about the large crowds and remember who were there and what was done……plain and simple. Hats off to the youths……….whether you are green, red or blue please take your hats off to them. Monelle Williams really put the icing on the cake with that great speech eh!!! DMITRI has just revealed the date. He told her to tell us that DADDY lost the election date and will drag it unti election calls itself because St. Joseph last night frightened him. 47. The Following
    May 26, 2014

Come guys, I’m hearing people complaining “oh how they can bring an innocent baby into their thing”
Ok get this, if a defence attorney puts his client on the stand and poses questions about the clients past to the client…..then the prosecutor comes and start using the client’s past to continue to ask question. If the client’s attorney says “objection” to use of the client’s past …..what do you think the presiding judge will say????? Over-ruled!!!!!! Why???? Because the prosecutor opened that door for the form of questioning.
ALL THIS TO SAY, SKERRIT BROUGHT HIS SON INTO ALL THIS, WITH HIS DISRESPECTFUL AND RIDICULOUS STATEMENT; HIS 5 MONTH OLD SON HAS THE ELECTION DATE……..NOT EVEN HIS OTHER MISTERS!!!!

  48. Not Me Alone
    May 26, 2014

I don’t get carried away by crowds because crowds don’t win elections; it’s all about ground work. However, based on what I saw in ST Joseph last night, bearing in mind many civil servants who are UWP supporters as well as many UWPites that are taking all they can get from Skerrit, are afraid of being victimized, and therefore did not go to St. Joe and compare the political hype Skerrit got in St. Joseph on Labor Day, I can see the Skerrit I know passing through Marigot to get to and from Vielle case. Skerrit will not want to use the EO Leblanc Highway to Roseau because when he gets to St. Joseph he will be reminded of the UWP Youth rally and that will get him depressed and oppressed.

Some people will commit suicide on Election Day. Because if workers think that crowd giving them 11 seats, they must be in LALA land. Guys, to get 11 seats you have to UNSEAT 7 labour constituencies and maintain all three of yours.

If you are realistic you would change the modus operandi and stop trying to be ‘the new labour party’. Because not a thing going to change, just a different set of people plundering the country. I guess equality for all, everyone want a chance for them to plunder…….

    May 26, 2014

I believe every person has their biases for the political party which they support. Sometimes we take our biases to the extreme.

Both political parties filled the St joseph Savanah with their rallies. The difference here is that the DLP filled the whole of St Joseph including the playing field.

The crowed that UWP had was just a fraction of the people that was in St. Joseph on May 5th. every street in St joe including the back streets were crammed with people on May 5th. In ottrobando, on the morne, by enid shop goin

    • Politburo
      May 26, 2014

going back to the savannah. The crowed on May 5th may have been well over 20,000 people.

Lets be realistic here in 2009 36,000 people voted, the DLP obtained 23,000 votes; the UWP 12, 000 votes and the Freedom party et al 1,000 votes. I maintain that the DLP still have the popular votes in Dominica.

When election is called and the UWP looses I hope defeat will be accepted this time around. You just cannot take the whole of Salisbury and Marigot and empty them in St Joseph and say you win an election or that you have a bigger crowed.

      • Politburo
        May 26, 2014

And by the way both parties can easily attract 10,000 people to their rallies. But UWP cannot attract 20,000 since they never obtained that number of votes in their 25 year history.
which the DLP surpassed just four years ago.

I understand fully that a party can still win the popular vote and loose the election but a lot has to happen for that to materialize. Yes the UWP may be better prepared, better organized than previous years but can they beat the DLP this time around ? I don’t believe so. Time will tell

  64. The Following

    CONSIDER THIS!!!!
    DLP
    1. Planned St Joe general rally in 5 months
    2. Advertised on Radio stations and day before rally paid trucks to do heavy advertising; going around communities blasting music, telling them not to forget the rally and join the train.
    3. Day of the rally gave out thousands of shirts, caps etc
    4. Paid the buses to take people to St Joe and gave gas money to some people
    5. Paid vendors 300ecd to participate (I know, my cousin from Grandbay was paid)
    6. Rally was held on a Public Holiday (Everybody was looking for somewhere to go)

    DWP (TEAM DOMINICA)
    1. Planned St Joe Youth rally in one month
    2. Only advertised on Radio
    3. Majority of attendees paid their way to St Joe
    4. Rally was held on a regular Sunday, with people having church in the morning
    5. Attendees; very few had DWP slogan shirts, but yet were decked out in blue

YET AN OCEAN OF BLUE!!!!!!……This say A LOT to me!!!!

      really???
      1) I heard the youth leader say that the rally in sen joe was planned not after the labour had theirs there. so if its only one month they plan it, that would mean they knew, they knew, they knew.

      2) what happen to that vehicle that was passing in my village blasting “WORKERSSSSSSSSSS”. they most likely didn’t pay like DLP did but they advertised not only on radio.

but remember tho, rallies don’t win elections

    • A Doubting Thomas
      May 26, 2014

You are right, The DLP planned their Rally and it was well planned. All the Ministers told us of their Ministry and what the DLP Administration is planning on continuing the good work they are doing. The UWP did not take time to plan their Rally. They saw what happen with the DLP in St. Joseph and the UWP said to themselves let us have a Calypso Jam and called it a Youth RALLY.

This was not a Youth Rally. A Youth Rally is something where the adults stand aside and watch the Youth do their thing. That was not what we heard and now seeing in the pictures.

The Jam was for everyone and the people came out to a Jam. And the crowd came and it was a huge crowd, no disagreement there. It was a very large crowd. But what did you get from the UWP Jam Rally, apart from the amount of people, what did we really get?

A Leader who is consume about prostitution and rape. That was what I am getting from it. So want does the UWP stand for, more I hear and more I listen, I still do not know. What I heard

The young people are prostitutes because they prostitute themselves.
The poor and needed; The Elderly are Greedy.
Those in need are greedy; that is our young and elderly.
And now Ministers are Rapists? That even in itself is suspect.

I heard somebody said there was no maypwee? I wonder how you’d call that. This is a person hoping to be the Prime Minister of the Country.

Even the UWP Candidate for the constituency said that she knows that some people came for the Triple Jam, for Gossip and whatever.

So they are quite aware why the people came. I hope some came for the apology they never got.

Not the labour party just skerrit. I wonder how many communities he can post his representation in ? He’ll go up for Roseau to Soufriere, Scotshead and then from Laplaine to Marigot to Vielle Casse and so on. He will have the portfolio for each and every Ministry next year for himself. He confessed that he has been trying to get the PM’s attention but the PM is a busy man. What Parry did not reveal is that the PM does not want to meet him. Parry has outlived his usefulness.

Ever since they (uwp) came on the scene they have been nothing but decisive and cruel to people. Mob rule is there thing. When the bell rings we will see who wins the goal. That speech from Hon. Lennox Linton tonight was reminiscent of when tragedy has hit a family, a nation, or a community and a real loving, caring, and devoted man of God calls everyone together and prays hope, inspiration and God’s speed over them. What a speech Lennox! It was your “Between you and me” program on Sunday afternoons that really opened my eyes, but I will confess that I never thought you could deliver such a speech. I saw you as an honest and sincere person. I saw you as a great leader; I saw you as an answer to the cries and affliction of our people, but never as a great speaker. How wrong I was! You have it all my brother and you are truly God’s gift to us. What a speech! I am not going to be able to sleep tonight…you have me going bro.

As I have said when the boots is worn on the other foot, those same persons will disrespect those who will be in authority then. They will also disrespect us as parents as well. ???????????? Do you want that …. But as I always say peace will always reign in our lovely country. No patriotism taught to our young people but disrespect.

Wow, why are you lead by emotion, it is an old psychological trick that politicians use to manipulate the masses the antidote for this is reason. Politics is a game battling for minds and heart of people. Strong Leadership should not be judged by speeches only, it is the reason why people get broken hearts. If you look at history you will see what I’m saying. Oh by the way sleep is important do not deprive your self of it, simply over a speech given by a politician.

Then I voted them in 2005/2009, because I felt the young PM, who was also a freedomite like myself, deserved a good chance. However, the man hast lost his wayt and sure does not have the interest of Dominica at heart as seen by his performance and his dictatorial style which was so strongly criticized by Mamo. I feel good toady! Lennox has really inspired me and his speech tonight will be long remembered. It’s a speech that we in Dominica has never heard before; its a speech of deliverance, hope, care for our democracy and future of our young people as well as our women that have fallen as victims of this Skerrit led DLP. I don’t care whether you are a DLP supporter or UWPite but the powerful speech delivered by the Right Honorable lennox Linton, must go down in history as the most powerful and well put together speech delivered on a Dominica platform. Now I start to understand why the man did not go to University, because with the wealth of knowledge and ability this man has, I think if he had attended university some well developed country would have stolen this gift from us and there would not be hope for Dominica at this very difficult time that Skerrit has brought upon us. But thank God Lennox is here!

You know who is also gifted in that area – Monelle. We have seen various women in the political arena in Dominica but none like Monelle. There is no way Kelvar can match her.

@zo wye – You are correct. I also saw quite a number of children on the back of the Labour trucks that were heading to the Skerrit Party St Joe rally.

Apparently, those children were going to St Joe to meet and spend time playing with Gugu Gaga.

        May 26, 2014

How good there were no “kids in blue”. It appears that only at the Labour rally there were none labourites in red. Ha ha ha!!!! I was in St. Joie and I was counted among the 30 or so thousand!!!!!. The same way the Labour Day crowd by itself cannot win election, you think the “parents, come support your youth rally” (smart move I dare say) will by itself win election. I am a supporter of Labour and will vote Labour. but I must say the turn out of young people was impressive. It means the Labour Party has more work to do. But does the turn out of young people at the Labour Day rally and the all youth motorcade (no parents or guardians came to support the youth. They were all by themselves) the day before the rally bring any satisfaction to the UWP too? I also heard that the crowd at the Labour Day Rally was in most part there for the entertainment. Wasn’t there entertainment too at the “Youth Rally”? Did the crowd come just for the entertainment only?. I hear too of the free transportation and free gas for some and support for vendors. Did you read of the email to the diaspora seeking resources to move the young people to St. Joe. I also heard on Sunday that it was the “ministers of government who were prostituting the young ladies”. That was on Sunday May 25th 2014. On Wednesday May 21st in St. Marteen, I heard it was the “young ladies who were P-R-O-S-T-I-T-U-T-I-N-G themselves for favors that came from the public purse. Both expressions of “prostituting” were spoken of by the same person. You see how intelligent and very articulate people can bamboozled the not so selective discerner of rhetoric?. So my dear friends, let us not lose sleep, fight and hate each other over the cut and thrust of our politics. Let us work hard for our party and let the people of Dominica decide. There are many surprises in the next election.

Finally prostitution or prostituting has made its way onto the political platform.

For a Labourite this is a very fair comment. Just to remind you this was merely a youth activity. Compare it to the DR P’S youth activity on May 3rd nuh.

I am a former DLP poto myself and have shifted my alligence as I see Sherri turn from a reformer to dictator. This man is driven by greed for absolute power and the accumulation of wealth. What is really there for the youth, farmers. What about the women? This man is sure to fall because you can only fool some of the people some of the time but the masses are no longer heard followers of Roosevelt Skerrit and the people want change. Skerrit can buy, he can bribe, he can whisper the date to only goo goo ga ga, he can sell but he will never again be allowed to take the reigns of power again in this country after the next general elections. Once a man competing with God he has reached the last end. Does anyone recall Skerrit saying if he must tell the people go and pray to God and wait for God to answer their prayers or he “god” should help them because God taking too long. Skerrit boy you have lost God’s favor as you have clearly made a mess of what God has blessed you with. As for me and my house we are voting for change this time around. Bye bye DLP no more support from us.

Monel was a powerhouse! She seems to be getting better each time I hear her as she remains focus on the positives and never gets sidetracked by those that try to get her to play by their dirty rules and politics. What a crowd! However, Lennox Linton, my hero, delivered a speech I have never heard in our local politics which goes back to 1975, when I first began to follow politics. In fact, his speech reminds of one delivered by Obama way back in 2002, in his home town of Boston. They say men don’t cry, but Lennox had me crying BIG TEARS tonight, as finally, I saw a man that is ready to restore hope, pride, and integrity in our nation. When he called the ladies to come up front and said to them “I love you all, I will fight for, I will defend you”, I just could not hold it anymore, On my God!

True Dat. It reminds me of the Sunrise Rally. Did that one transformed into votes for the UWP?

And how UWP complains of the number of voters who vote in an election? If what I am hearing, close to 50,000 people were at both Rallies. That is plenty of Votes.

Apparently we have people who can vote and make a difference.

Two Rallies in one month both very populated. The Rally on Polling Day will give us the answer. That could mean neither Party can take the Dominican People for granted.

Calling people, Greedy, Needy and Prostitutes would not do it for me and my family. But I am one person. Someone here said the United Workers Party gave a very good speech, if he did not apologize to the women and the youth, I would not consider it a good speech. But to each its own I would think. Rallies does not mean votes. That was said after the DLP Rally also. The Voters have the say and only on Polling Day.

Have not seen you on the blogs lately. Thought you were dead. The workers have raised you up from the dead. You need to give thanks and praise to the Workers thru the Lord.

      ‘You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
      You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
      I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.’
