PJ intervenes

Patrick John

Former Prime Minister Patrick John has intervened as the controversy regarding the election of a new president for Dominica rages on.

John confirmed to privately-owned Kairi FM that he had written to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit on the matter.

“I showed my concerns about the impasse that is going on and I gave advice to the Prime Minister on how the impasse could be settled amicably,” John said.

According to the former prime minister there are provisions in the Constitution that can resolve what he described as a “national quarrel.”

John headed a committee of five who drafted the Constitution before Dominica attained independence on November 3, 1978.

Fine, that is true-he tried to overthrow a government and please do not forget that. We cannot and should not.

But just on the ISSUE at hand, for a moment, forget the source of the opinion. Focus of its contents and if you are honest, you will realize that his comments on the ISSUE are very relevant. After all, this is the man who ushered Dominica into independence.

Whatever our background. Whoever we are. Whatever our past transgressions or our present situation. However big or small they may be- as long as we are citizens of the Commonwealth of Dominica, we all have a stake in the development of the country.

To the extent that we act in accordance with the laws of the land, we must be free to speak, assembly, criticize, comment and yes VOTE (within the confines of law) for who we wish free of vitiating vices like bribery and corruption.

Let all views contend for this is exactly what we are now fighting for- the protection our fundamental rights and freedoms.

My friend, building and nurturing democracy is a slow laborious process. It requires patience, character, perseverance, insistence, courage, tolerance, bravery, valour, guts etc.

It needs time to grow and take root. Every single action, however small, aimed at building and protecting democracy is worthwhile. Remember, what makes pearls, gold and diamond is consistent pressure over many, many, many years under severe conditions. Never underestimate the eroding power of a single raindrop one after the other for a consistent period. That is what makes the rivers and fills up the ocean.

I am sure you know the expression that Rome was not built in a day. Well, everything will happen in its time. The Universe will bring it together at the right time for the good of all. Hold strong and keep the faith- we shall all witness the results sooner rather than later.

What Doninica needs right now are confrontational leaders like Saverin and Louis Benoit.Remember the days when PJ was prime minister, before PJ would open his mouth them fellars were ready to call out their workers. Can you imagine that nonsence that is doing presently could take place in the faces of Saverin and Benoit. Those of us who are Seniors will remember when Dominicans were angry with a law that was going to be passed in parliament against their wishes, apart from on a demontrating in the yard of the house of parliament, they broke down the doors guarded by the police and defence force and destroyed the Mace.It is alledged, that is how the Freedoom Party was formed, therfore, I say unless we produce leaders like them fellars,Skerrit will continue to bulldoze Dominicans.

Let PJ talk!!! He is a born and bred Dominican. He may have wronged us,however parts of the allegations are still very debatable. He did alot of wrong things, however he was NOT imprisoned for treason after all Eugenia Charles’ ranting and raving. I wonder why? I have always asked myself why PJ was not charged with treason since to me this is the highest wrong you can do to your country.

PJ like SKerrit was well loved and misguided by fanfare, illusion of love and the same do as you damn well please syndrome that now plagues a once promising leader. So who best to warn him of his mis-steps than one who actually walked the walk, and paid the price? Beyond that like it or not history will always record him as Dominica’s first Prime Minister and a drafter of the constitution.

When it is in Skerrits’ favour the Constitution is fine and dandy and he can repeat that word a billion times, when he steps outside the ring with his cohorts suddenly it becomes ambiguous, and in need of changing. What is wrong with Dominicans? This is not about Labour vs UWP people, it’s not about Personalities, it is about the Supreme Law of the Land! If we sit idly and allow one man to irresponsible use his political likeability to do as he wants now, when will we ever tame the beast. Tell the man when he is wrong. Skerrit can’t nominate or install any president on Monday, point blank. He can’t invoke any imaginary power and do it plain and simple.

Anyone who is willing to sacrifice the soul of his country for his own personal gain should sit on his hands in a corner.

…and for those who are here talking about he is suited to give advice, because he drafted the constitution. What does drafting the constitution have to do with the evolution of a country? Things evolve. Positions become obsolete. It is always necessary to re-evaluate and cut off the fat where necessary.

Many people posting here are just breathing hot air – without giving any thought to the matter at hand.

@Cowboy & Grey poupon, I lived through the seventies, participated in the events of May 29th 1979, so I’m no spring chicken. You only hold the view you do about PJ because the version of history you were presented with is that offered by Lennox Honeychurch. That account is skewed to make freedom party and Eugenia look good but the truth is out there and one day it will be revealed. No one is saying that PJ was a saint, I certainly am not but you must allow yourself to accept the truth from anyone who presents it. The truth in this matter of the presidency is that skerritt got it wrong and if you love him, truly, truly love him, you will tell him so.

Ahhhhh! You know PJ, I think I am getting sick.

There is something blowing in the wind and I think I may have caught it…It’s called the “Unconstitutional flu”

Do you find yourself coughing, sneezing and suffering from itching throat and headaches lately whenever you hear the PM and the Speaker or when you see them on TV? Okay! you too coming down with the deadly Unconstitutional flu.

Skerrit is constantly coughing lies, Tony and Lawrence spinning truths on Kairi, the AG constantly misapplying legal doctrines and I am sure that all these guys are sick and spreading the “Unconstitutional flu “all over the place. The PM, president and Speaker are in poor health and they must all demit office because they have the Unconstitutional flu, experiencing a slow but sure political death from an aggressive, contagious and rare form of the Unconstitutional flu

Nurses at the hospital are crying publicly, complaining that they do not have the medicines, equipment and resources to take care of all the patience now suffering from this dreaded Unconstitutional flu.

Our children are crying-we think they are hungry but they to are showing symptoms of the Unconstitutional flu.

Banana farms are contaminated with Leaf Spot/ Black Sigatoka. We thought the farmers lacked inputs, fertilizers and pesticides to attend to their crops in the fields but alas-they too are infected by the outbreak of the Unconstitutional flu

DPP dismissing cases like never before, I understand that he too suffering from the Unconstitutional flu that is now infecting our law enforcement, our magistracy and judiciary.

Our legal system has been infected and even Doctors of law, history, and medicine are all suffering from the Unconstitutional flu so much so that they are now moo-moo.

Ordinary folks are not thinking objectively anymore, their brains are infected by the Unconstitutional flu. Therefore, some have decided- led by Edison to gather outside parliament on Monday as a cure for this highly contagious Unconstitutional flu blowing in the wind.

Dominicans are sick from the Unconstitutional flu and we need a cure via the election ballot according to the AG -as a matter of necessity.

    • It's M
      September 14, 2012

You forgot this one —Those who have decided to gather outside Parliament and some time before by Fort Young area with placards have suffered with the Unconstitutional flu in the past and may catch it again.

      • ROSEAU VALLEY
        September 15, 2012

I have not forgotten anyone. Assuming that your lousy attempt at sarcasm holds true, why should our leaders seek to infect the people over and over again with this UNCONSTITUTIONAL virus that is destroying the society?

Even for the sake of these leaders, who will one day be ordinary citizens, for their supporters including you, who may have to exist in a society lead by another regime in the future, this fight against the unconstitutional flu is for them.

So my friend, in the words of your own PM – Go to hell with your partisan politics This is not about party. It is about country.

Seminole Ave? Is this in the Bronx or are you in Florida somewhere?

I do not fully understand your point? I am Dominican and do enjoy constructive debate and did set up shop in Dominica! Read my post below and let me know what you think.

Dominicans cannot compete with the Chinese as we get taxed to death. When we do business in Dominica, we have to pay our share of fair tax and it is extremely high as we have to pay the share that the Chinese do not pay. The Chinese shops are government sponsored whereas Dominicans have to buy there goods from market wholesalers, pay duty upon bringing it into the country and pay fair wages to local workers. We hire Dominican workers!!! The Chinese do not have such expenses and the current Dominican administration fully supports this unfair business practice. Dominicans do not have -A Pot to Piss In- because our Government is corrupt and support the interest of foreigners ahead of their own people. This is a problem we have always had in our country. First it was the Syrians and now the Chinese.

Mr. Savarin is 100% correct. Poverty does not breed crime; it is as a result of the greed of Dominican politicians. Young people look at these individuals (if we can call them that) looting and stealing, sucking the life blood out of Dominicans everyday and they have no other choice but to believe that it is correct. Why not? If the prominent in society do it, then it must be correct..right?

For more debate – please see my post below. Being that you are looking for constructive discourse, please no vulgarity. I detest this primitive behavior on this forum.

Banana? Patrick john and Euginia charles that kill dominica with that independence thing. Look at the trend, all independent caribbean countries are struggling, and all the non independent states are thriving.
bananas, england gave us a 25 yr preference deal to sell bananas, its done, which means that we are on our own. Dominicans too closed minded, the world is moving on, are we gonna stay back?

    • Voice of the South
      September 13, 2012

I was born under British rule and I promise you that you did not miss anything. We had British passports but could not travel to England. Instead of sending pounds back for the bananas they did not pay for anyway, they sent us back.

Dominica was much poorer when we were British. I know you are looking at Martinique, Guardeloupe or the Dutch countries. The French and the Dutch invested in their colonies but the the British took and never gave back. Had the generation of politicians such as Eustance Francis, Eugenia Charles not taken action we would still not have roads.

When I was 10 years old.. and I am not over 40, the roads on the country side were not paved and we had no toilets with running water. All the schools and roads were build after independence with help from the French and Canada.

England did not know we existed except for when they needed cheap bananas.

How many chances have u been given Jude and u still telling lies. Patrick John was a poor woman’s child and the elite Roseau freedomites wanted him out. Ask some of us, we will give you the stories of those days. The only wrong on PJ’s part is not coming out and tell the ppl what was going on. Supporters of the Freedom party threatened to kill Labour party (that’s the original DLP)supporters. We let PJ down because we were to scared to stand up and fight.

I am not sinless and I won’t even pretend that I am. PJ like everybody else made mistakes but why do we dwell on PJ’s past. Even when PJ makes a worthy gesture his past is brought up and the very same laborites denigrating PJ are the ones who continue to say I love my PM even as the PM continue to behave like a dictator. We would be elling ourselves short to believe that PJ’s sin is greater than that of Skerrit. Just wait and see.

    • Papa Dom

You are so wrong my friend, the ones giving PJ blows are not labourites, they are freedomites using skerritt as the milking cow. No lobourite will disown PJ, they may have thier differences but they will never disown PJ. These freedomites have so much hatred in their hearts it shows in everything they say and do. The same hatred they displayed toward PJ and the labour party, they are now displaying towards Edison James.

No,let us see what he has proposed. All of us has some thing good in each of us. So do not dismiss him off the cuff. Remember he was very instrumental in drawing up the constituion. But then again the UWP lawyers led by dominica’s only “common sense csar” and master orator has a view and government has a view. That is the problem.

PJ is perhaps the only person other than the UWP and government who has publicly declared that he has a potential remedy for the situtaion, perhaps to do away the “Doctrine of Necessity”. What we have now is either you are for the government’s position or you are against it in favor of what the opposition is pushing.

What is so bad about PJ that some of us Dominicans are so quick to bring back his past. Let us deal with the past and move on my people. PJ is a Dominican like all of us and under the constitution he has every right to give him opinion and advice on any matter. Then it is up to the PM and his team to decided whether or not they are going to take his advice. But know how the PM operates these days he will not take the advice even if he know that what PJ is saying to him is right.

I think they may be too young to remember  .

This man wanted to give Dominica to White Supremacists and in exchange he expected them to bring him back to power… Hello… I cannot believe he is still allowed to have a say in our county…lol Why was he not hung with the rest of the defense force who also betrayed us?

For those of you who were not alive, this is what happened. The future according to Patrick John – a Dominican of African descent.

Te KKK or Ku Klax Klan (most brutal and notorious American Nazi Organization) was suppose to help him kill the Dame(Eugenia Charles)and they would inherit Dominica as payment (which by the way is a 99.999% black country) Thereafter, they would reinstate him (PJ) as leader for life. Yes people … the idiot actually believed this. How STUPID is Patrick John:?:

Thank God the Americans found out about PJ’s ingenious plan and was able to stop the take over before it happened.

BTW – I am not a supporter of Skerrit being that he is also doing the same to us. Meaning – giving more and more of our country every day to the Chinese. I wounder how much longer it will be before we have a Chines member of cabinet. This is a disaster waiting to happen. First you will be convinced that a Chinese Ms. Dominica is prestige for our beloved country and when the brain washing has taken root then the Chinese president will follow.

When are Dominicans going to realize that Skeritt is getting rich selling Dominica to a foreign race of people who do not have our best interest at hart? The stadium is nice but is it worth not having any land or shops in Roseau to leave behind to our children!!! They have taken over St. Lucia and now Dominica is next. The last time I was in St. Lucia I was not able to find any St. Lucian owned shops… Dominicans be warned.

I hope it wasn’t PJ that told them to get the president to resign on Monday , nominate a new president on Monday and occupy the state palace on Monday? Boy Boy what a situation that we have in Dominica.Clearly we are dealing with some Billy the Kid type characters in government. When will they get it- what ever the “ it “ is I don’t know. One thing I know for sure is that the government has repetitively shown that they are incapable. Such a simple matter they could not get it right. My 14 year old daughter was able to interpret the requirements of the constitution.
So let us see some of the simplest things they screw up- garbage bins, Fertilizer Bin, Chinese loans for Chinese to work, airport expansion , interior conduit from Melleville Hall to Roseau, Francesco Corallo, Karan Singh, Carrette nomination, Daniel Carbon nomination, involvement in the Sick Secko investigation, school repair, the prince young lady from Wesely, feeder roads, black sigatoka affairs. I don’t even want to talk about the economy, the Asphalt plant, the layout river hotel, the MOU.

Why don’t we invite and recognize this man during our independence celebration? why? This man should should be up front during our independence parade. If it was E.O. Leblanc, Skerrit would have him always recognized. Man, let’ give Patrick John his flowers before he die. Well done Patrick! You headed a comittee of Five and drafted our Constitution. I am not watching what you did wrong or the errors you made,, because we all make errors in life. Even the PM himself makes errors. So Mr. John, thanks for giving your take on what’s going on re this new president thing. And PM, this independence anniversary, let put this man up front and honor him like you honored E.O.Leblanc.
