PM blasts Soufriere protest

Parked buses at the scene of the protest last week

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has come out swinging against a two-day protest by bus drivers in Soufriere and Scotts Head which left scores of commuters, including students, stranded.

For two days last week the bus drivers parked their vehicles  and said they were protesting against the poor condition of the roads in the area but speaking at the opening of a newly refurbished health center in Anse de Mai on Thursday the Prime Minister said their actions only denied “children from going to school for some foolishness”.

According to the Prime Minister Dominicans should be patient and be reasonable in their demands as his administration works towards alleviating their living conditions.

“Government is spending $33-million in Pointe Michel building a sea wall and a new road, and men and women are demonstrating for a few pots holes in the road,” PM Skerrit said. “What message are we sending to our children?”

He questioned whether he should stop the Pointe Michel project and fix the road instead.

The Prime Minister went on to say that whenever he drives to his residence in Morne Bruce he sees pot holes and even the Prime Minister’s residence is not in the best of conditions. “If you come to where I live, the house is infested with termites. In some rooms there is no electricity because of electricity problems. Some of the taps cannot close because there are problems. This is the Prime Minister’s home,” he revealed.

He went on to say that sometimes in Vielle Case he has to take a bath with a little Loubiere Spring Water bottle because of a lack of water.

The Prime Minister said citizens should be grateful for what is going on in the country and get together to assist and even “block the holes.”

“We have to be grateful for what is happening in this country. We cannot curse the darkness instead of lighting a candle. We have to be thankful for the major projects that are happening,” he noted.

ok dno you didnt publish my last comment, so i shall behave this time…..
Mr PM you have the people belive that when you need to meet the rest of the world it is to villecase you go with a bottle and a wash cloth, are the beautiful rivers of our country not good enough for you to go bath in like the rest of your people do, and Mr Pm do you not belive in supporting local trade to get a local business to come treat the goverment house for termites and to fix your electrical problems, like the rest of your population of people do, and MR PM do you not think that out of respect for your country and whom ever shall suceed you [hoprfully sooner rather than later] that you maintain and fix the house that you living in, as the people of your country do when they rent some one elses property, i am sure you would like your deposit back MR PM.
To call any of your people stupid is not a good thing for a leader, and while these bus drivers did stop children from school and people from work, you should be aware that these little pot holes you say are nonsense are not nonsense when they causing hundreds of dollars damage to these poepls vehicles, in other countries the people can clain from the goverment if there vehicle is damaged by holes in the road, check it out for real.
I think you have no respect for the people of your country, ,,, all you do is bleet like a sheep that you have to bath in botteled water, you need to check the world around you PM and see the real world, not just the honored world you live in.
I HOPE THAT IS MORE ACCEPTABLE DNO.

With annual rainfall of some two-three hundred inches a year, I do not understand why we are not creating a concrete base, before asphalt is laid on these roads. The long term benefits of long-lasting motorable-roads would far outweigh the initial cost of proper road construction.

While I am not a supporter of the Government nor Opposition, I agree with the PM on this one

“The Prime Minister said citizens should be grateful for what is going on in the country and get together to assist and even “block the holes.”

I think it is time that Dcans learn to be more self-reliant, and stop waiting on the governments to do everything for them. The village councils should play a much bigger role in community development. And like the PM said, they should come togather as a community and help out in areas that needs assistance.

    • hmmm
      May 8, 2012

some of these holes would have been taken care of if community day of service was not just for beautification. remember a warning was issued that no one should be putting cement anywhere instead they should plant flowers. and by the way where is village council going to get the money to fix roads when the allowance given to them is getting smaller and smaller?

    Dear simple minded friends,
three things. If u haven’t noticed the Protest accomplished its goal, which is bringing the issue to light ..u know how i now that ? the PM is talking about it and so r u…whether the road gets fixed is now up to the PM’s ..Your move PM..
Second , Did Our PM just refer to the issue that the Bus drivers are raising as “foolishness” ? Classy move by a man who represents the interest of these very same people……
Third.. my humble suggestion to our leaders ,i.e. PM and Minister of Tourism()#had to get that in..funny as hell….Dominica has a tourism board..Have the board organize five day (school hours) classes on Hospitality management and other areas tourism related … Pay these people to come to the class weekly …pay them based on attendance….Two fold result..ur training a work force and helping the unemployed at the same time >>>what do u think ??? let me know.
PS ..Lets offer solutions instead of Gossip and maypwe…#just saying

Posting a second time, ADMIN please keep your political opinion away from your work you being paid to do.

Well well well…what a mess…what a laugh…and some of the comments….my god…I am convinced that Labourites are from a different planet.

Here it is that a legitimate concern from the Soufriere bus drivers is being highlighted through a protest.

So many huge pot holes in the road, causing them to swerve a lot, no sea wall below, so an accident can happen anytime. Clearly, this is something that should be given some sort of priority. And the government agreed with that since they immediately sent persons on the road to patch the holes. And had this been something that is NOT NEEDED at this moment, trust me; these guys would ignore the protest.

But wait, here comes the King again in his element, lying through his teeth for NO REASON at all.

No electricity in your home? Who is supposed to believe that?

Taps in your home not working? Who is supposed to believe that?

Termites in your home and pest control aren’t being called to remove them? Who is supposed to believe that?

You take a bath with a loubiere bottle of water? What size? The one for 2 dollars or 4.50? I mean who Mr. really think he talking to? That’s a record man?

OH WAIT, I know! The very same people who continue to allow this man to FOOL them: these are the people he speaking to. They have accepted SO MUCH, he has gotten away with SO MUCH, that his actions and words are becoming more and more laughable. The deception is going to a further all time low, but they like it so. The more he lies, the more they love him.

Can you believe persons are defending this?? I mean come one, for once in allu life, can allu not tell allu king to GET REAL?

Can you believe these people even have the audacity to talk about priority???

27 million on a state palace is priority over a dangerous road that can cause fatal accidents?

Dishing out cash every Wednesday to those next level lazy-ites is priority over a dangerous road that can cause fatal accidents?

No boy….look a bunch of wicked people!

The PM was right about these bus drivers, but he forget that he took good loan money and is now investing in a new president house. He could have used this to renovate the PM home in morne bruce and fix the road. I absolutely agree that the bus drivers actions were selfish because as I mentioned before their children were at school on the day of the protest and to do that to other people’s kids is just plain wicked. Dominica is a beautiful place but it have a lot of selfish and greedy people here. You worry about rubbers and shocks when all you have to do is drive like a civilized human being! If you don’t run over the pot holes you’ll have normal wear on those parts of your vehicle. Slow your behinds down! Skerrit you need to cancel the construction of thath presidential house and invest where it’s most needed “PMH”, where healthy human beings go to die!

Mr PM come on dont speak like that because who feels it knows it. How much more shocks, bushing rubbers, tires and other suspension parts we need to purchase for thousands of dollars every two to three months before our cry is attended to? yes major projects going on but still small projects going on and we nah get none. All we asking is a slice of the cake. Some of the Pal Reps are two wicked and selfish. Look at Gbay for example from way back the ppl of Tete Morne, Grand Coulibrie, Powell and Montin have been the main pillars of labour in Gbay. These are the ppl giving labour the 100%vote election after election. These ppl have not been asking for nothing and so to they are not being given nothing. But atleast Justina Charles can fix the road from Ravin Banan to Tete Morne for these ppl. The woman isnt doing not a thing for Tete Morne ppl yet still she have Government money fixing her partners in crime yard and surroundings.Take a drive to Tetemorne Mr PM and you will tell if if that woman isnt to wicked. There are ppl living upthere what happens if there is some kind of emergency? Go see the kind of ravins bus drivers and private vehicle owners have to drive on day after day. Go see the darknesss that covers these little communities as soon as it is 4pm. Yet still Justina area is well bright day and night.

i am saying dont take Gbay ppl for granted we have been quiet not asking for nothing not making demands however if nothing is being done for us especially on the Tete Morne road soon, come election we will surprise the world.

Roam wasn’t built in a day!!

  28. Sout Man
    May 7, 2012

It’s amazing that bus drivers can come together for a common cause; whether we support them or not. It’s unfortunate that school children had to suffer in the process but sometimes a stand must be taken, irrespective of the consequences.

At the end of it all, we cannot get blood out of stone; hence the need to exercise patience, even when we let our voices heard.

I am also amazed that some choose to dwell on the $27 million. Can you negotiate a loan to build a house and use the money to buy a bus? Do you even get to touch that kind of money? The bulk of that money never left China; so why fool ourselves thinking that the money could be used as the Government of Dominica wished? Even if we could have used the $27 million to refurbish roads, those very same roads would have to be done after another 5 years. Premier Leblanc, PM’s John, Seraphin, Charles, James and Skerrit, have refurbished most of the same roads and it’s still a revolving door. Don’t we have to go beyond just roads; as important as they may be?

[NB: PM Skerrit; a stitch in time saves nine. Fix that tap at your residence. You may be wasting more water than it cost to repair that tap. A plumbing crew at the State College would be more than happy to make a little cash! What about Public Works?]

    • awa wi
      May 8, 2012

so why negotiate it to build a house in the first place? if we have more pressing needs than a house why not negotiate for them instead but i guess some people playing smart but not being clever.lol(suprised that you got so many thumbs up. guess that skerro supporters are clutching at straws or anything that seems remotely intelligent that supports the total waste of 27 million on a state palace.) as i always say if it was up to some of you we would still be on the slave plantation taking licks and saying patience one day it will happen. thanks God for the blood of coffi and bala that still flows through some veins giving us the courage to stand up for our rights(incidentally i picture the author of this piece as a house slave who is content with the droppings of the master imploring his suffering brothers to just “hold on”)

Of course, your brainwashed education will cause you to picture me as a “house slave”. When “massa” was in control during the colonial days, folks like you kept your mouths shut. As soon as a black man was elevated to a position of power, all you do is stab him in the back. You constantly sold out Bala, Jaco and Congorie to your colonial masters because you felt that you should hold the reins of power. Instead of struggling for the economic development of Dominica, you are more concerned with back-stabbing and grabbing political power. You can’t wait to let the democratic process take its course. You must be mentally deranged to categorize my comment as one written by a “house slave”.

PM Skerrit said. “What message are we sending to our children?” The message is: “stand up for social justice, the right to protest, the right to speak up about matters that affect a whole community” If it affects the whole community, it is worth protesting. The infrastructure is essential to the community thriving. The bus drivers do pay taxes, it may not be income taxes, but they pay more taxes than most people, in the form of GAS tax. Please don’t be blinded by someone making a comment because they disagree with someone else. We all have the right to express what we feel is the right thing to do. No one is wrong, just different points of view. Let’s learn to get along without calling each other names!

This is the begining of a dictatoship when a leader has to call demonstrators “foolish.” Mr. P.M , these people have legitimate concerns and this is the legal way to show their disapproval of your lack of leadership skills and inability to deal with the important issues that affect the lives of every-day Dominicans.
You cannot expect us to be living the life you live. You are to lead by example. If you dont want to take ashower that’s your bussiness, but we are a clean people.

Well, Well, Well the P.M. took on the responsibility to govern and this include managing the country finances and prioritizing the work needed.

In my view if the P.M. neglected the sea defence wall leading up to that area and god forbid desaster strock and person were cut off from the Island, in the protesters view the pot holes is more inportant than some access to traverse from one point to the next?

Those up who live in other countries drive through allot of pot holes and keep our mouth closed but we alway offer advise on what is best for Dominica. Rome was not built in a day.

Thought it is true that the Bus Drivers have a constitutional right to protest, does not mean that they should go about it the wrong way. What have they acheived after two days of protesting? Natioinal attention, yes – but no road repairs. They still have to wait. The true victims of this action were the school children, the workers, and everyone else who could not get to their destinations. I agree that the road needs repair, but protesting and going on Strike without first negotiating, is a waste of time. Strike should be the very last resort after all other options have been exhausted, and fruitless. The Bus drivers lost two days of revenue that they will never get back, yet the pot holes remain. These Soufriere and Scotts Head Bus drivers are hypocrites. I live in Pte Michel, and I see these Bus drivers speeding through my village numerous times a day, not even slowing down for speed bumps. In my opinion, they are the worst, most dangerous drivers that I’ve seen on the roads. They want the pot holes repaired so that they can race each other back and forth between Roseau and Scotts Head. The pot holes are forcing them to slow down, and they don’t like it. The Pte Michel road is very bad. It’s under repair due to the Sea Wall project, yet these maniac Bus drivers speed through there with school children and elderly passengers, and they don’t give a rat’s a** about the damage to their vehicles, or the safety of their passengers. The Police need to be present during the morning and afternoon rush hour to pull them over and issue Tickets for speeding and dangerous driving.

Dominicans . . . GET SERIOUS!! The same ones among us who complain are the very same ones who hindering progress!!!

Peace and Love to my fellow Dominicans!!

After reading this article I now feel oblige to high light the fact that the PM’s reaction is the hallmark of a dictator. I would like to share my opinion in an elaborate and expanded fashion but I must be considerate. I will therefore offer my opinion in bullet point format.

People are not suppose to owe government gratitude instead the government is suppose to be grateful to the people.

In response to the blogger name DE PM – Stop the lies and propaganda. The records will show that the DFP government undertook the most expansive road construction and Road rehabilitation in Dominica. The UWP also did a great job at that too. Check the records before disseminating lies

The PM has never had to replace struts , bushings and tires- the last time I checked he went from not owning a vehicle to being driven around so he never had to shell out thousands of dollars for vehicle repair and maintenance. He therefore cannot understand the plight of the motorist. The other ministers and parl rep have vehicle allowances and drive government vehicles . Nuff said

The conscious PM would use his living allowances to repair the forceps and bring in the exterminators to at his residence. Nevertheless why repair a house that is seldom occupied.

Who builds an expensive house and does not consider a backup cistern in an area where the water supply system is unreliable. Should I be sympathetic to your Loubiere water bottle bath? – the PM ought to be ashamed to tell me that after 11 years as PM your constituency does not have a reliable water supply. I am LMAO.

Why is the PM talking about school children and commuters getting affected by the strike – the impact and collateral damages is essentially the reason for a strike or demonstration. I hope the PM was not expecting the bus drivers and people of Soufriere to do like Ian Douglas come sing “ We shall not be moved “ and then expect their road to be fixed?

This government administration spent 22 million dollars in 2 months for an election campaign and now they want the people to be patient about the dilapidated facilities. While road safety is compromised and the bus drivers and vehicle owners put their vehicle through this terrible road condition. After all this is a primary roadway. The PM should be thankful that the people took this course of action because what might have been averted is a terrible accident where a bus driver carrying school children or work commuters is trying to avoid the sink holes and pot holes ending up in a “ Faleze” or colliding with another vehicle.

Just over 30 years ago the then Prime Minister Mary Eugenia Charles undertook the rehabilatation of the whole Island road network, there was the Canefield to Paguoa road done, the grandbay to Roseau, done the dalice to pond casse’ done, the paguoa to Portsmouth done, the imperial road from Pondcasse’to canefield done, feeder roads in Marigot, Wesley , Calibishie, Woodfordhill, Caholm, Layou park, Sydnicate, among others done; plus rebuilding of schools, health centers and public conveniences, and there was no diplomatic deal at the time
now we have diplomatic deal plus abundance of corruption, and poor people have to suffer, we cannot go to our farms because of bad roads, the Dalice Pondcasse road bad, Paguoa to Pondcasse bad, Roseau to Sofrerier bad and the Paguoa to Portsmouth now getting bad,

I am sure that the PM and the Minister for Communications and Works can address these matters themselves but it must be pointed out that $100 million could have done all these roads in the 1980’s. Thirty years later, $100 million can only build one of those roadways. Imagine one sea defense wall for $33 million and one bridge for $8 million. Bananas still sell at less than EC$1.00 per pound. Plus, Europe and North America are not as willing to give loans, let alone grants, to small island nations for road construction while they struggle with economic depressions themselves.

I wonder how people like Saverin, Maynard, Parry and other freedom Party turn coats are saying when propagandist are saying that the current DLP has provided the most development ever in the history of Dominica. The PM and his blind supporters are spreading such lies in the face of these Freedom Party men who know very well that (1) The DLP in 12 years has not done not accomplish 3% of the work that the Freedom Party did in 15 years – I am talking about both infrastructure and economic development. If anyone wants to challenge me on that I would be happy to have a civilized discussion. I can also safely say that the UWP accomplished much more than the DLP in only 4.5 years in government.

What is quite obvious is that this PM is never willing to take responsibility for the failures of this government. Instead he seek to blame the people . We saw that after the Cruise ship company complained about our presentation the PM lashed out at truck drivers and the nationals; last week he blamed the people packaging the tourism tours; he continue to blame the farmers for the status quo; How can you blame the bus drivers and people of Soufriere when in the first place the government allowed the road to get to that state. Road repair and maintenance is a fundamental responsibility of central government. This government came and met the roads built in Dominica and if central government cannot even fulfill their basic responsibility it is obvious that something is wrong. The bus drivers were not even asking for a new road. I remember the days of the Freedom party and the UWP there were constant road crews around the island some doing road repairs and other crews cutting the shrubs along the roadways.

      @ Jude Nicholas

Please give the PM a break. He is doing all he can to make Dominica a better place, to repair and either construct new roads. New health centers were built and/or are being built and there are other constructions taking place. A lot has been done in Dominica in the previous years to present and more to come.
Dominica has progressed to such an extent, the likes of which we who resided in DA including our ancestors never experienced and enjoyed. Those who are presently residing there should agree with this. What more can he do? We should know the saying, ‘Rome was not built in a day.’ Everything cannot happen at the same time.
I always remember the words of my dear, disciplined, wise mother who was always respectful of authorities as the PMs of yesteryear, “People (some) are too ungrateful.” To be fair, people must show appreciation and be thankful about what is being done in Dominica for their benefit. It does not appear to be a slow progress. Things are happening very fast in DA. Nationals should be elated about that.
One of the Fruits, Gifts and Virtues of the Holy Spirit is ‘Patience’. Be advised that we cannot live a godly life without it. We also cannot enter Heaven if we do not practice godly virtues. We Christians are to practice those virtues at all times. Recall the Hymn: “…And they’ll know that we are Christians by our love…”
I do not wish this on anyone but God punishes the ungrateful. He detests complainers. He will say look at all what is being done for Dominica and some are complaining and impatient.
Therefore, fellow Dominicans in Soufriere and other critics, please be patient.
I always endorse that every Dominican national should support the Prime Minister and have respect for him. When there is really cause to complain, go directly to those in authority. You are causing him a lot of stress which he does not deserve. Pray for him; pray for your country and other nationals. God’s blessing and peace.

After spending so much money in that contutiency and even now to make driving more comfortable for them,to be protesting for a few pot holes is very ungrateful to the government

Like many black nations the locals enjoy excercising their constitutional right by smothering the exact answer to development of black people, education! These children had school and if the busdrivers had said only school children they transporting today (like how a couple drivers did with their own kid and bring them to school) that would have gain them more respect and even more supporters of their protests. What they did was useless and though the PM he’s right on this issue, though I feell he’s trying to save face by turning this on the drivers!

All I can say is that I am thankful that we didn’t have an accident where we would hv to declare a day of mourning for the people of the st mark parish. Those of us who travel the road know that these were not merely potholes. And the fact that they were in dangerous places surely didn’t help. We know that there are very few places on the soufriere road that isnt precipitous. We know that is only the graces of the supreme being that has protected us on this road. We know this. The road is dangerous enough by itself,we could do without the other elements.
And as for work being done on the road two months ago , that isn’t true. Work began in November or there abouts when the village was about to celebrate the hundredth birthday of one of the residents. Work stopped the week after its began. Nobody knows why. The people of soufriere, Scott’s head and gllion know this to be the truth.
While I am thankful that the holes have been patched on the road between soufriere and pointe Michel, I want to make a special plea for the residents of gllion who travel the most difficult road of all of us in this tri village parish. This road is deadly but mr. Hugh Tavernier fearlessly transports gllion residents to and from daily. For this he must be commended since no ther bus driver really wants to do this job.
And please mr pm you cannot as a leader call the people who elected you ungrateful. They elected you. You should be grateful to serve them. That’s why they placed their trust in you. Your electorate can never be ungrateful.

      @ Just Thinking

Every country has its share of pot holes. People complain about the pot holes in Toronto or Canada for that matter. After the winter season, there will be many potholes.
Dominica being a tropical island has experienced a lot of rain and floods. Obviously this will produce pot holes. Probably the roads were not well-constructed and also repaired. When rain falls and with the hot sun, this could create the problem. In addition, the heavy traffic and with some big trucks, these could easily cause damage to the roads.
The Mayor of Toronto asked that those who notice pot holes to take a picture of them, if possible and to report it to the City. He asked that people telephone to report where the pot holes are located and that a crew will go out to repair the pot holes. I visualize that this will not be done immediately or overnight.
Did the villagers report the condition of the road? This is the first step. They could also have spoken to their Member of Parliament. What’s done is done and I hope that the road will be repaired soon and everyone will be happy about it.

  72. TRUTH
    May 7, 2012

The Prime Minister is well educated on the subject of government and politics but the bus drivers all have PHD’s (pot hole dogger). That road is and dangerous! As a driver I should be able to keep my side of the road but can’t because the pot holes are so deep and while shifting lanes the dangers are oncoming vehicles, mountain on one side, precipice on the other, sharp corner or up and down a steep hill. The lack of safe roads possess more of a threat to the lives of school children twice a day back and forth than a detriment to their education as they stand with the drivers to protest an issue that affects us all. It’s not an attack against the efforts currently being undertaken by the government nor does it belittle those major projects. If they built the road they should maintain it; Every project has 2 phases the project phase and the operational phase (post project work) which will keep the roads well maintained into the future. Bless

      @ TRUTH

I have no idea how old you are. There is a problem. Some people do not think beyond. Dominica has always had precipices and narrow roads. In those days children did not travel far to the elementary school. They were able to walk to school.
Those who attended high school and also were employed in Roseau would reside in the town during the week and return home on weekends and for holidays. No one complained about the narrow road and precipices. As the years progressed and traffic increased and as Dominica commenced becoming modernized, :) then, they would travel daily and return home in the evenings. There were no heavy trucks as they are today. Few people had private vehicles then. Traffic-wise, it was relatively quiet in the evenings.
Consider the many vans today which transport people to and from Roseau and elsewhere. They take their heavy toll on the roads. These should be taken into consideration.
Today, Dominica has better roads and nationals became accustomed to same. This is the cause of complaints, one after the other. It is what you have grown accustomed to. In view of all this, patience is not being exercised. In time the road will be repaired.

The prime Minister must stop behaving like a child and be more realistic.
Because he is spending $33 million on sea wall in Pointe Mitchel, does not mean that vehicle owners of Scotts Head should not be engaged in a peaceful protest. He needs to understand that the $33 million he is spending on sea wall does not come from his pocket; we all pay for it! Vehicle owners on the other hand must spend money they do not have to maintain their vehicles and we know parts are not cheap in DA.
Furthermore, to hear the PM of the country use the poor condition of roads to Morne Bruce and condition of the house being infested with termites and no lights in some rooms, is nothing but pure childish talk.
While the road to Morne Bruce and the condition of the PM’s house there are in bad shape, the truth of the matter is, in his constituency from Blenheim to Penville the road condition there is very good. Furthermore, in his home town of Vielle-case every street is well paived and his huge house in Viellecase, which is a tourism sight, shore does not have termites, all 8 bedroomsrooms have daylight electricity, and the pool is a sight to behold. So don’t use your office to bit up on poor people that have to drive their buses in pot holes. You will not repair it for them

no use stating that no accidents ever happen frequently beacuse they do, the population are at risk here, and the demonstration is a credit to those who took part,

the comments by the PM are indicative of a none caring individual “I have a compfy and save suv to drive abouyt in I do not use public transport, a bit like Marie An Touanette let em eat cake I am alright jack who cares

      May 7, 2012

      @ jeremy

Consider the population of Dominica and consider the numerous vehicles, cars, vans, trucks and motorcycles. The motorcycles are not small ones with small tires as they were in those days. This is one of the reasons for increased accidents. Pedestrians are not able to cross the roads/streets and safely. They cross at their own peril.
This is why, some years ago the government of Bermuda legislated that there will be one vehicle per household. Bermuda is much smaller than DA. I have no idea if this ruling is still in effect in Bermuda. Last time I knew it Bermuda did not grow bigger. Probably this should be instituted in DA. If the PM legislated it, you critics would oppose him in no uncertain way.
Some of you are without understanding. Think of the heavy increased traffic and rainfall in Dominica and the hot sun which contribute to road damage.

Are you presently a resident of Dominica? Some of you talk about the $27,000 and using it for something else as if it is your tax dollars and you worked for it. Since some of you are so bold, ungrateful, lack understanding and do not put on your thinking cap on (you probably have none), have you considered whose money it is, where it came from, who contributed to it that countries as Dominica were able to receive this amount of money and more and with more to come?
I reside overseas and so do many Dominicans. They are employed and they pay taxes; likewise other non-Dominicans. If it were not for paying taxes, the U.S., Canadian and other governments would not have been able to assist countries as Dominica. Instead of thanking God and others, you complain about the money and dictate what it should be used for. Many of you lack love and humility. Get with it, on your knees with clasped hands and thank God that Dominica is progressing; beautiful buildings and roads are constructed lest all that be taken away by hurricanes, earthquakes and floods. This is what happens to ungrateful people. Sadly, the grateful ones will be affected but with their sincere prayers, God will give them strength to cope with whatever occurs and may preserve them.

        – The $27 million is not a gift from the U.S., Canada or Europe. It is part of a loan from a Chinese Bank, which we have to pay back with an interest rate of 2%/annum.

That alone gives us a right, as Dominican citizens to, at least question such expenditure. Imagine your father taking out a mortgage to build himself a new home, to which you will only have access by invitation and burdening you with the payments without consulting you. This applies whatever party you support (or none at all). Mr. Skerrit has a lot to be grateful for, he did well.

CAN YOU IMAGINE OBAMA ADDRESSING STRIKERS AND INSTEAD OF DISCUSSING WAYS AND MEANS OF SOLVING THE PROBLEM, HE ENDS UP CHASTISING THEM AND TELLING THEM ABOUT TERMITES IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND THE LACK OF WATER.THE MAN MUST LEARN TO LEAVE POLITICAL MAPUIS FOR THE RUM SHOP AND THE POLITICAL PLATFORM. That is a form of intimidation. A good and safe protest is good for the country, let the people voice and frustration be heard. The bus Drivers were exercising their constitutional rights.

Everyone has the right to their options and the bus drivers needed action and not talk. We talk too much !! sometimes we need action and we do benefit from some of those actions.

A few pots holes in the road,” PM Skerrit said, The people of driving and walking in pot holes. The people of that village are paying taxes also. These same pot holes put the Bus Drivers into more expenses.

(Now why do you have all that to say so that people should feel sorry for you. You chose to live in that condition but some of us do not choose that way of living. You have your Mansion in Vielle Case. In the year 2012 no one should be taking a bath in a bottle of water. We have too many rivers on the island. Talk of Intimidation!!!

    • Justice and Truth
      May 7, 2012

      @ FLORIDA

Some of them should be paying their fair share taxes. A country cannot progress unless all its adults who are of age to work and able to do so do not pay taxes. Only then will taxpayers have a genuine voice.
Do not criticize further about that. Some of them should cease being irresponsible and having babies out of wedlock and with different partners, some, for a few measly dollars and others get no support whatsoever for those children. These have contributed to their poverty and that of Dominica. They are dependent on the government and the tax dollars of hardworking Dominicans. They really do not have a voice to protest.
Conduct a survey to find out, how many of them who were protesting are employable and do not make the effort to seek employment.
Please do not say there is no work. God has given each one of us a talent and we are to use it for our benefit and the good of the society in which we reside. If some people do not know what their talent is, then they should pray to God and He will reveal it to them.
Some are idlers, takers, great talkers; not doers and are chronic complainers. They are the ones who criticize the Prime Minister. They also lack discipline and respect and need to learn and practice same.

Totally agreed Mr. PM….anyone remember the road from Soufiere to Scots Head? Successive administrations came and went and the road was totally ignored. Look at it now.

The newly refurbished road from Portsmouth to Roseau was recently opened. The Pond Casse to Canefield road has been fixed. The Pond Casse to Marigot road is now being refurbished. Recently the gov’t announced another $20-million for road works across the country.

No other administration has taken on roads on this island in such a way and yet people complain. SMH

Where is all the money to fix all roads at the same time coming from? We don’t have that much. If the PM goes to China for assistance, people complain. If he goes for a loan from international agencies (who gives only high interest loans anyway) people complain. If the PM raise taxes to fix the road, people complain.

    SMH

Development takes time. America did not come as it is today overnight. Take it easy people.

You must have been born in 2011. The Freedom Party rehabilitated roads to Grand Bay, Melville Hall, La Plaine,Portsmouth and built feeder roads, UWP built new roads to Delices, to Warner, to Fab, fromPenville to Savanne Paille, the two electrified the entire island, UWP in four years built sea walls, started the creole festival, the list goes on with the achievements of the Freedom Party and the UWP.
In almost 15 years this government can only boast of Scotts Head and pte Michel seawall and the Chinese projects. Without the Chinese what would Labor have done? The sad thing is DLP has sold all our small business to chinese.
Skerrit should come in an open forum to discuss his achievements to allow people to make minced meat of his sell out of our homeland.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WAKES UP IN THE MORNING TO CHECK WORLD NEWS? AT THIS PRESENT MOMENT THE MIGHTY U.S IS IN NEGOTIATION WITH CHINA FOR FUNDS. WHEN IT COMES TO THE MONEY NOW,CHINA IS THE ONE WITH ALL THE FUNDS RIGHT NOW AND THE U.S NEEDS MONEY TO RUN IT’S AFFAIRS. CHINA HELPS COUNTRIES TO DEVELOP, AMERICA SPENDS MONEY ON WAR. ONE SAYS CHINA TAKING OVER DOMINICA. IN ALL COUNTRIES YOU GO PRESENTLY THERE ARE CHINESE BUSINESSES. DOMINICANS WANTS PROGRESS BUT DON’T WANT OUTSIDE BUSINESSES OR INVESTORS. I’VE BEEN TO THE U.S AND GUADELOUPE ETC. AND IS FOREIGNERS THAT RUNS MOST OF THE BUSINESSES. RIGHT NOW IS DOMINICA’S TURN FOR DEVELOPMENT AND THE PRIME MINISTER TOOK THE BOLD STEP OF APPROACHING CHINA FOR DOMINICA’S DEVELOPMENT. AND FOR THE PASS 7 YEARS DOMINICA IS AT A CERTAIN HEIGHT OF DEVELOPMENT.WE NEED MORE PEOPLE PRESENTLY IN THE COUNTRY SO MORE MONEY CAN CIRCULATE.ON ROAD ISSUE,THE BUS DRIVERS COULD BE MORE SENSITIVE THAN THAT. DEVELOPMENT IS COMING TO THIS ROAD. MILLIONS WERE SPENT BETWEEN SOUFRIERE AND SCOTT’S HEAD. OVER 20 MILLION IS SET ASIDE FOR ROAD DEVELOPMENT. EVERYTHING CANNOT BE DONE IN ONE DAY. IN NEW YORK CITY I SAW POT HOLES THERE. I HOPE WITH THE REPAIRS, NONE OF THE BUS DRIVERS END UP IN AN ACCIDENT. THEY LOVE TO DRIVE THIS ROAD VERY FAST. I KNOW.GOVERNMENT HAS PLANS FOR THIS ROAD WHICH IS GOING TO GET A COMPLETE NEW SURFACE. AS THE TALK IS,WHAT THE P.M IS DOING NOW ,THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE IN THE EIGHTIES WHEN DOMINICA HAD MONIES FLOWING AND THE PRIME MINISTER AT THE TIME HAD AMERICA IN HER HANDS. AMERICA HAD MONEY THROWING. THE AIRPORT COULD HAVE BEEN BUILT AND ALL WHO WAS AGAINST IT BY WRITING THE EMBASSY TO STOP IT ARE THE ONES WHO WANTS IT NOW AND WANTED TO BUILD IT BY PUTTING DOMINICA UNDER SERIOUS DEBTS. P.M SKERRIT DO UR THING AND WORK FOR ME.

That is why I love my PM. These bus drivers do not even pay incomes tax, nether to they pay social security. If is was not fr the implementation of VAT they would never get taxed. The roads in that are become damaged as a result of landslides after heavy rains. People always have bright ideas as to what MY PM should have done. The truth exists is that they know nothing and had they been in his position they would not have made the strides that he has. I have driven n that road, and it is not half as bad as the west coast road was.
