PM criticises IPO’s decision to investigate him

Skerrit

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has criticized a decision by the Integrity in Public Office Commission (IPO) to investigate him.

The Commission is to investigate a complaint that Prime Minister as Chairman of Cabinet used his official influence to secure concessions for Blaircourt Property Development Ltd, a business venture in which he is alleged to have an ownership interest

When the news broke the Prime Minister had said he welcomed the investigation since it will prove “once and for all” that he isn’t involved in any wrong doing.

But on Kairi FM’s Heng Program this week he criticized the IPO.  “The Commission was wrong to write to me,” he said.

Skerrit said the commission has indicated there was no evidence that he had interest in those properties.

“If somebody is bringing evidence to you, you have a responsibility to ask the persons where did you get this from? Who gave it to you? How long did you have it in your possession? So to say that it is alleged that I may have breached the code of conduct is questionable,” he said.

PM Skerrit said, “It was important to established whether I had an interest before you could say that I breached the code of conduct.”

Investigative journalist Lennox Linton filed the complaint with the Commission in November 2010.

You are a public servant. We are the public.

We (or some of us) voted you in, you can just as easily be replaced.
You were so happy when the office was formed and cried about corruption, and rooting it out, or has your memory diminished the closer it gets to your turn?
If your hands are clean then why make noise? Accept the investigation and enjoy the outcome. …… if you, like most of those who attain some semblance of power in our lovely microcosm, have lined your pockets against eventual removal, then you, like them are stealing.

    is this clear enough?

HE AINT MAKING NOISE HE IS MAKING TOO MUCH SENSE, YOU MUST ESTABLISH IF HE HAS AN INTEREST IN THE PROPERTY FIRST BEFORE YOU CAN INVESTIGATE THE BREACH OF OFFICE. HE HAS THE AUTHORITY TO GIVE CONCESSIONS FOR BUSINESS PURPOSES ETC, SO HOW CAN YOU PLACE THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE. FIRST IT MUST BE PROVEN THAT HE HAS A OWNERSHIP INTEREST IN THE BUSINESS THEN THAT WOULD BE THE BASIS FOR INVESTIGATING THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST. GUESS YOU TOO BLUE TO UNDERSTAND HOW THINGS WORK IN THE LEGAL WORLD.

    • WHAT?
      July 28, 2011

If someone hacked into your email it means that they illegally entered your email account and “extracted” whatever emails they found there! So you are saying the the emails of alleged “ownership interest” in the villas are actually true and they are “implicating” the right man? In other words what Lenox has brought out is the truth and was found in “whose email account”? This is what I gathered from your contribution. I am saying now, “PUNISH LINTON if he hacked but also PUNISH anybody who have emails in their account implicating them in “wrong doing”!!!!!! Fair enough?

No if they were cut and pasted, PLEASE PRODUCE the ORIGINALS so we can put Lenox to OPEN SHAME!!!!!!! lol

I’m wondering how many people read this article “PM confident IPO investigation will vindicate him” and the one above.

I’m not sure whether i missed the boat on comprehension…..but from reading the original article – he did welcome the investigation. What he is having issue with is the fact that after finding that he had no interest in the matter of the villas, they are investigating for a breach of the Code of Conduct.

I’m not sure if there is journalistic intergrity in that article but I DO AGREE, it is very MISLEADING!

    July 28, 2011

Honestly, if there was no evidence of an interest…. then what is he being investigated for?

How did he breach the Code of Conduct if the main basis was that what he did was because he had an interest in the result – thus a violation of a Code of Conduct?

Can someone advise as to what the issues of the investigation are based on?

As I understand it Mr. Alexis is the registered director of Blaircourt Ltd. but this does not necessarily mean that he is also the owner or even has a financial interest in the company. He is also a board member of the Invest Dominica Authority, which handles applications for concessions and decides whether or not to submit them to cabinet for approval. By his own admissiom Mr. Alexis is a close friend of mr. Skerrit and, assuming he did not sit in judgement on Blaircourt’s application, the least mr. Skerrit should have done is to excuse himself likewise from any cabinet deliberations on said application. This would have been the prudent and smart thing to do. From mr. Skerrit’s latest comments, diametrically opposed to his initial reaction, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that he and his legal counsel fear a “smoking gun”. What ever happens let’s get clarity of this issue, which is casting a shadow on our country.

  18. THINK FOR ONE MINUTE
    July 28, 2011

We have noted with interest that Lenox Linton has repeatedly gone to the IPO with submissions concerning Medad and they have been refused/dashed aside. When this is done Medad could have taken legal action against the man, he has not seen it fit to so do! Further, other submissions were made in NOVEMBER of 2010, it is said that a couple were discarded however one has stuck and the IPO in it’s “own deleberate” judgement has seen it fit to launch an investigation! May I remind us that certain members on the IPO have legal background so THEY WOULD NOT BE CRAZY TO EXPOSE THEMSELVES if what they have stumbled upon is not convincing pieces of information. Who knows? They must be previed to certain information that has not been made available to the public. I do not know but for the IPO to decide to investigate this “sitting” PM, one with such “clout”, they must have something “VERY STRONG”…. that is how I see it with my “matchbox knowledge”….. I may be wrong but I await the outcome with bated breath!

Mr Prime Minister, as the Head of Government, Minister for Finance and Party Leader, you must be above reproach. For too long we’ve had these dark clouds hanging over the integrity of the country’s leadership. It’s time that we clear the air. Let the investigations go forward and let’s put this matter to rest, once and for all.

No one is bigger than the country and no individual is bigger than the party. I pray that you have nothing to hide but if you are aware of any skeletons in the closet, please resign and let the party recapture the Vielle Case seat. That will render the citizenship case against you null and void and would necessitate a by-election instead of the court handing the seat over to the opposition UWP.The party has capable leaders, sir. Do the right thing; the party is bigger than you. In the interest of Dominica, let the investigation continue unhindered. If you are innocent, more power to you.

Please this is rdiculous n a mistake on the part of the comission in my humble opinion. you first hv to estalish that he has an ownership interest in the properties before u can say he used in influence to give concessions to the company. But if the commission throw out the first complaint because there is no eveidence that he has interest, then y go through wt the second complaint….its a case of the chicken and the egg…if he doesnt hve an interest then the second complaint should be thrown out as well…just saying

IN THE OF SIMPSON CASE IT WS SIMPLY; IF THE GLOVES DONT FIT YOU MUST AQUIT. NO PRROF THAT HE HAS AN INTERST INTHE VILLAS BUT YOU TAKE ON INVESTIGATION TO SHOW ABUSE OF INFLUENCE. EVERYONE WHO THE PM APPROVES A CONCESSION OFR IS ABUSE OF HIS INFLUENCE.

“If somebody is bringing evidence to you, you have a responsibility to ask the persons where did you get this from? Who gave it to you? How long did you have it in your possession? So to say that it is alleged that I may have breached the code of conduct is questionable,” he said.

So these investigative journalist were hacking emails, doctoring emails and now the IPO just accepting anything.

I think the POLICE needs to start investingating allegation of hacking (like the PM address hacked on the dawn on election announcement)…why wasn’t there an investigation into the breach of national security?

But as PM said he is happy with the investigation and let the case be settled once and for all

Remember, Lennox never wins his cases, so this might be another $$$$ coming from him again..

    I am just saying

Again, I’ll ask fools like you. Under which law is the police going to investigate? and if they did, what are they going to charge anyone who hacked with?

    • July 27, 2011

Now ask Skeritt why is his now talk against the IPO investigation and yopu wre wrong Lennox won cases.
If it wasnt for Lennox a lot of the different issues that are out there we would have come to know the amount of issues that we get to hear about so keep saying Skerrit will win and if he does it wouldnt surprising to thopse who think for themselves but I dont believe you would running your mouth about Lennox or any other I just hope that the IPO have a back bone and let the chips fall where ever.

If for example one of your family members were murdered and the only evidence you had as to who did it wouldn”t you have accepted the evidence and bring the perpetrator to justice? You DUMB-IN-CANS are unbelievable!

  53. Interesting
    July 27, 2011

I suspected that the IPO has enough evidence to set up an investigation and boss if you are innocent we will hear if you are GREEN TEA we will see. take it easy

    July 27, 2011

Mr. Skerrit, he who is not at fault fears not, so if your conscience is clear and all your affairs are in order and in accordance with the rules and regulations, u have nothing to worry about so let them go ahead and investigate it would only serve to clear your good name and put all doubts and accusations to rest.

ok DNO…careful with words please …the headline sounds as though the PM doesn’t want the IPO to go through….

in other words headline and article do not match…

      July 27, 2011

DNO please allow me to answer this idiot by pasting a copy of the PM’s comment.

“If somebody is bringing evidence to you, you have a responsibility to ask the persons where did you get this from? Who gave it to you? How long did you have it in your possession? So to say that it is alleged that I may have breached the code of conduct is questionable,”

Please read again before you make such an A**** of yourself. The PM is criticizing the IPO’s decision. Pre-School reading 001

      • July 31, 2011

It is alleged…so it remains to be proven by the IPO. Let’s all wait for the results and not jump to a hasty conclusion.

With the hundreds of you posting out there.
Would you say that it’s fair to hack into
        someone’s personal email?
Domincan’s are trying to move into that big media circle but I hope they have big bank accounts when people start suing them for invasion of privacy.

Well well, Mr PM this seems to be bothering you, but if you have nothing to hide why bother, let the commission go ahead and do what they are supposed to do. I am sure that they will find that you were not in violation of the code of conduct. After all, you have the very smart lawyer – Tony Astaphan and God is watching from where He is.
Why are you bothered Mr PM? God is good all the time and every time God is good. He will take care of business!!
