PM hints at early elections

PM Skerrit
PM Skerrit

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has said he could call early elections if he is pushed by the opposition.

Speaking at the commissioning of a filling station in Scotts Head on Tuesday evening Skerrit said the Dominica Labor Party will be ready when elections are called.

“They called for election in 2009 and when I gave it to them they were totally naked,” he said, “So let them call for election…”

Skerrit said that he hopes when he calls elections the opposition is prepared. “All I will say to you tonight is that Roosevelt Skerrit, the leader of the Labor Party, is ready at any time the prime minister calls election,” he stated.

The next general election, constitutionally due in 2015, has been a topic of much discussion.

Addressing a large a crowd of his supporters at a rally in Roseau in early March, one day after an election petition against him and education minister, Petter Saint Jean, was dismissed by the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC), Skerrit said he wanted a “clean sweep” whenever the polls are called.

He told supporters to help him ‘fight tooth and nail’ to accomplish that type of victory.

The opposition United Workers Party is presently undergoing a period of leader change but has said it will be ready whenever elections are called.

In April out going party leader, Edison James, described a party retreat as “the beginning of the intensification of our preparation for governmental operation and action.”

He said the UWP is poised to return to power and dismissed the Labor Party as a ‘government in hiding.’

The PM said he will call an election “if he is pushed by the opposition.” He did not, in reality say that he “will” call an election.

1.Why is the PM speakeing in the context of the leader of a political party and not in the capacity of Prime Minister.
2.Is there a Prime Minister in the shadows that the general public is not aware of.

Being able to debate a topic with an opposition has NOTHING to do with managing the affairs of a country. And for your information, debating is NOT shouting and saying things that one’s supporters want to hear. It is sticking to the point and backing one’s position with facts. one can win a debate even if he/she does not believe what he/she says. Have you ever taken part in a debate at school or listened to one?

We all know that the 2009 General Election was allegedly stolen. However, the real issue is not whether the next General Election will be called early or on the constitutionally due date. The real question Dominicans at home must ask themselves is “Am I better off today than I was in 2000?”

So a party like that should be voted out by the electorate. Among 21 candidates you are telling me ‘If not Skerrit Who’?

In all honesty, what’s the link between a gas station and elections? Oh Dear! Gas station being opened means more spending. Has the price of gasoline gone down? Will there be a fisherman”s price or a labour or uwp price? absolutely not! Even in gas station can be found politics! Yet folks are under pressure and suffering most definitely without the basic things of life! Will politics provide parents with school supplies and food foer their hungry kids?
Maybe folks drinking gas and eating politics so that’s a clean sweep! Silly season up in the air!

The General Elections should have a set date every 5 years man and that is it!

Oh and the Election Commission should be required to conduct thorough investigations on all contestants as to their legitimacy to contest said elections so you don’t have contestants suing each other after elections. What you guys being paid for?

We know that DLP has plenty money. Just like a degree is a high “desirable” to be a leader of a political party, plenty money is not a “necessity” to election victory.

Be happy that DLP has wise and sensible supporters like Mammy ans Sogo, rich self made millionaire candidates like Skerro, quiet advocates and lawyers like LEN and As,who focus only on being critical of Lennox rather than advancing the empty development taking place.

Based on the overwhelming support of the UWP, there must be many “disgruntled Labourites and die hard UWPistes in Dominica today. We wish Skerrit another 70 years as an individual but he must be counting his last few days as PM.

Dominicans be aware. My fellowmen and women take heed. A stitch in time saves nine. the onus is on you and you and you. Never allow Dominica to slide into fraudulent elections. That is disaster for everybody and country. When such illegalities occur it is hard to reverse.

Don’t we listen to events in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East? Are we willing to learn any lessons from bad elections, cheating, fraud. Haven’t we seen the chaos that follow? Govt’s have manipulated the system to their benefit so much putting a dent into the true democratic process.

The Electoral Rules, the Constitution again and again are being cast aside. It is in the interest of those who want to stay in power “ad infinitum.” Now, more than ever, in Dominica’s History, debates, discussions, talk shows, all citizens who love this Nature Isle must concentrate on ELECTORAL REFORMS.

Responsible media, at all times, as much as possible, must assist the citizenry in their demands for Electoral Reforms. Why would any Govt, in this 21st. century be so reluctant to implement Electoral Reforms?

Why in this 21st, century a Govt. refuses to bulge to the request of the Electoral Commission for funds to produce Voter ID Cards and to Clean up a “dirty,” bloated” VOTER’s LIST?

What kind of Nation is Dominica, where a Govt interferes so much with an “Independent” Electoral Commission? Remember the famous E-mail about the madness the Commission in to ask for electoral Reform? You forget already? That’s where and when those Kokomakak begin.

But the Commission has the right, by the Constitution, to request and receive funds from Govt. to make elections FREE and Fair. Is it not the Commission which asked, about 7 YEARS NOW, for voter ID cards? It was never National ID Cards the Commission asked for.

Dominicans do not make that serious mistake of permitting any pre – election or post- election irregularities or acts against the Law. You are playing with your lives. Where Corruption and injustice will rule the people suffer.

There must be a reason why Govt. does not want to acknowledge the genuine request of the Electoral Commission, but stubbornly going on with NID. The parroting and support for Govt. by the Chief Elections Officer and the Chairman of the Commission is in contradiction with what that same Commission really asked for.

It asked for funds from Govt. to specifically produce VOTER ID Cards and to clean up the list to ensure irregularities, fraud, cheating, stealing of an election becomes a thing of the past. For how long now Dominicans begging Govt. to respect the Commission. The Laws. The Constitution. But No. Nada. People know is the Commission that is responsible for conducting elections. We are seeing, under our noses something different.

Govt. has forced the Commission to renege on its previous plan to provide Voter ID Cards, not National ID Cards. Yes, the same “independent” Electoral Commission that wanted Voter ID Cards instead. Think for yourself, nuh?

While you and others quarrel, the UWP is proud to be the agent of positive change. Peaceful, democratic and progress change.

You will admit that without change there is no growth, no purpose in life. All living things must experience change to grow and that is what the UWP has been willing to embrace as a mature political party.

DNO not intending to set your agenda but in the interest of sensationalism shouldn’t you guys also note that during the ceremony a dirty and childish comment was made by Roosevelt Skerrit regarding the UWP candidate for the Roseau Central district.
Well this comment by Roosevelt Skerrit would really spark a debate on DNO ( not that there is a lack thereof) but I believe that politicians must be exposed particularly when they use public office to mepwesais people or to show off there financial prowess. Let us be real – if Roosevelt Skerrit was owing anybody in the way he is suggesting that the Roseau central UWp Candidate does then I am not sure he would openly criticize or call out anybody on their debts but then again these are the same politicians who call other politicians corrupt yet they are much more corrupt and dirtier than those who were first referred to as corrupt.
Roosvelt Skerrit may want to attack the opposition on issues of job creation unemployment, integrity(wow I wish),poverty, stagnation and retrogression in the economy or maybe they may just want to go back to the Tony Astaphan rhetoric and fabrication of 1999.

Never mind all the talk, Labour is afraid. They ain’t ready either and the PM loves his job too much to call early elections, knowing that he will never be PM again and he may well have to account for all his lies.

This is not right. It is not only those who reside in Dominica who love Dominica. In fact, there are many who are in Dominica who do not have its best interest at heart.

Do you know of the significant contribution that overseas-based Dominicans have been and continue to make to Dominica’s development? According to the CDB and the World Bank, remittances from Dominicans abroad may be as high as the second or third highest contributor to the economy.

Many overseas based Dominicans take loans from our local banks to build houses in Dominica.

Can you imagine if these people did not go out there to educate and develop themselves in order to contribute to the development of Dominica? It is not necessary that one should remain and toil in Dominica to indicate the extent of his/her love to Country. Please rethink this. This is not what UWP is about, we are an inclusive party.

Roosevelt Skerrit, who is the PM, appears to be concerned only about the preparedness of Roosevelt Skerrit and his status as PM. To the extent that he is interested in Mc Intyre’s victory in the Valley or Reggie in Cottage , Julius in Roseau North or Ambrose in Roseau South is only as long as he remains the leader of the DLP and the PM.

Come on, take pride in exercising your democratic, constitutional right to vote in honour of your ancestors who fought hard so that you can have the power to elect your government and determine the future course of your country.

Well that’s a tough one. I think they will loose some seats but we 15 to 18. If we go with that mind set we will loose. We first have to keep our 3 and to be honest Roseau Central is a toss up.

We have Grandfond, Wesley, Carib Territory, Castle Bruce, La Plaine, Marigot, Salisbury, probably St. Joe, the Valley and Soufriere. We still coming up short so me must take Roseau Central.

Labour has Paixbouche, Penville, Portsmouth, Tatan, Caulihaut, Mahaut, Roseau South, Roseau North, Grandbay and Petite Savanne.

      • ROSEAU VALLEY
        August 21, 2013

Some of us do not quite understand what is meant by good and accountable governance/government.

We confuse this basic principle with the right of a private citizen to make a decision that affects him/her personally.

Roseau Valley is a private group of concerned individuals from the Roseau Valley. How does this equate to good and accountable national governance by a group of people who have presented themselves for election to public office? There is no comparison. This is the same faulty argue by Crazy and others on Kairi who have called on Lennox to be accountable and transparent with the handling of funds that private Dominicans have entrusted him with in defense of our democracy.

Roseau Valley is not interested in personality or personal matters. We leave this to Mammy and Sogo. Roseau Valley prefers to elevate the discussion to the level of important national socio-economic political issues and progressive ideas. Come meet us at that level rather than inviting us to your yours.

Thanks though for declaring your interest in learning more about Roseau Valley. This is a strategic decision, which we have taken just like many other contributors to DNO- some of whom use five or more different names or sometimes maliciously using the name Roseau Valley to populate DNO with a single, narrow and negative point of view.

The buzz created around the new UWP candidates, the smooth stepping aside of founders James and Prevost, the excitement generated around September 1 and Castle Bruce all have Mr. Skeritt confused and playing catch up!

My advise to UWP is to ignore Skeritt and his old talk!! Instead concentrate on:

    1. Continue to select quality candidates as you have done with Lennox, Isaac and Dr. Fontaine

I’m not a Member of any of the Political Parties therefore I’m neutral. Are you seriously saying that DOMINICA has not had huge benefits since Skerrit became PM? There has been progress in very many respects not to mention international benefits including those for Dominicans who travel to the US etc., During my visit to Puerto Rico recently I saw the DOMINICA flag flying amongst some others. I was ever so proud. It was the very first time and I travel to Puerto Rico often. This is certainly the result of diplomatic dealings. Our PM is tenacious. That is positive vibes. However, this is simply the nature of politics. It has always been so from time immemorial. In fact, in Dominica, we have been very civil about our politics. The hatred that you speak of is not deep compared to what exists elsewhere. During political campaigns in Jamaica, Guayana and Haiti, people die of gun shots from inter-party rivalry.

In some Asian countries, members of parliament engage in fist fights in the parliament. In spite of what the PM says, this country is not too free. We are generally a civil, polite, kind, respectable and intelligent people.

Do not lose hope. Fear no more. We shall exercise our political option wisely as we cannot depend on the judicial system to do it for us.

This is Dominica. Do not compare Dominica to those bloodthirsty people in those countries who are filled with hatred in their hearts. They have not yet learned to live in peace and harmony with one another.
So what if some support one party and others another party. It is to be expected. However, why use pre-election and election day as a physical tug of war? This is for pagans, uncivilized people who have no conscience, no heart and who lack love for one another.
This is no way to conduct oneself during an election with thousands of people murdered and others injured. It is nothing to be proud of, to applaud and exalt.
They should learn from Canadians of all. This sort of hatred, paganism and uncivilized attitudes do not occur here, at least for now. I hope they never occur here.
We are supposed to be a civilized nation. This is why many from those oppressed countries which lack peace flock here. They will do anything to come here and to obtain landed status. I feel safe here and during election. So far so good. Thanks be to God.

I heard about strange things happening in D/ca by some evil people. May God protect his people from evil elements and evil people.
The Holy Water could be used at a distance to bless people, countries and to drive away God’s enemies, all evil people, to also tie their mouths, hands and feet that they cannot harm others. If you do not know this, learn it.
God is powerful, more than the devil. He is in control. He knows, sees and hears all things. I am never without Holy Water.
I just blest Dominica with Holy Water and all its good people, including the PM against their enemies. I asked Our Lord to drive his enemy and all those who deal with him, far from them. In Jesus Name! Thanks be to God!

Desperation, desperation, desperation, you see this talk about the new leader in the person of Mr. Lennox Linton of the United Workers Party, them fellars in red are not far from having the biggest headache in the history of the DLP. It was rumored that Skerrit is blaming the Bajan for advising him not to call an election earlier in the year. However, now that Mr. Lennox Linton has come on the scene and his popularity is said to be out of control, Skerrit feels had he held the election, he would have caught the opposition with the same old heads and same old team like 2009. He thinks he is ready, on the Ist of September when the New United Workers Party presents its new team under the leadership of Mr. Lennox Linton, I hope there will be sufficent paracetamol at the hospital.

I really think that the laws need amending when comes to the length of time one man can be the Prime Minister. Skerrit has become complacent and i guess is a result of the power going to his head. Sadly I do not think they will loose the next elections because of two main reasons. This administration has successfully brainwashed a good bit of the populates and the opposition has yet to realize that the floating voters are those who are not looking for the hand outs and name calling and opposing everything for opposing sake. We need a viable alternative which the opposition has failed to present. So it appears that a poor plan is still more of a plan than no plan. UWP can do it but they need to start 2 years ago. Show us that you can Unite which is the first word of uwp. No in fighting and power struggles. We are looking for a leader who is working for Dominica and not one group of individuals.

Mr. Hon. Prime Minister, before you call the elections please give Dominicans some answers re the following:

1.Do you know that we are waiting on you to give us some good news in reference to the 300 brand new jobs acting PM Austrie told us that you would be coming back with? In case you forgot, Mr Austrie addressed a crowd in Penville during their village feast, and he had this to say: “I can give you some good news that he (Mr. Skerrit who was in Colorado), that he will be coming bag with about 300 brand new jobs when he arrives in Dominica.” Since you are arrived here safely sir, where are those jobs? Are they in your suitcase that you forgot on Liat?

2.Mr. Skerrit, why did you not attend the Penville Village Feast yourself and had to send Mr. Austrie to fill in for you? After all sir, we all know that the Penville Feast is usually around August 15 each year and you are their Parlrep and they are the heart and soul of the DLP, why did you not attend their feast?

    3. Is it really because you had to attend a meeting in Colorado that would have yielded 300 jobs? After all sir, look you are already back in Dominica and as early as Tuesday you were able to address a gathering in Scotts Head. Are we to wonder if the true reasons for avoiding Penville at this time could be: A). You wedding day story that did not go very well in Penville? B).The FIASCO of the Penville road and water project?

3.Did you listen to the speech acting PM Austrie delivered in Penville on your behalf? He told us that they (cabinet) are very worried about your much travelling as a young man? Sir, that left us very worried as well because it reminded us of our late beloved PM who was also traveling a lot, and one day upon his return from a long trip where he was suppose to bring us new jobs, he called some of his cabinet friends and they did not answer nor returned his calls. Boy we are very worried too!

DOMINICANS>>>Yes your BELOVED, most Holy and Honourable Prime Minister is ready for an Election if and when called! Yes, your most Holy Prime Minister is wealthy and so is His Ministers. The Labor Party has millions of dollars in our reserve and the ability to give the gifts and donations that ultimately decides all elections in this beautiful and blessed Nation.
Your most High and Honourable, Highly Esteemed Prime Minister is beyond reproach! The opposition accuse him of all manner of corruption and scandals that are not based on facts but on oppositionist propoganda! My people do you honestly believe that the Garbage Bin, The Passport Sale and the Petro Caribe Government Programs are not transparent and a benefit to all Dominicans? Do you believe that any of these programs benefit your Most Holy Prime Minister and his Cabinet of Great and Respectful Ministers and NOT all intelligent and informed Dominicans?
The fact is my fellow Dominicans that Dominica has flourished under the management and control of your Most High, Honourable PM and his team of trustworthy Ministers! There is more Tourism, Agriculture, Business Ventures, Money and Opportunity in Dominica than during the term(s) of ANY previous administration.
Your Most Holy, Honourable and Blessed PM is in fact the Saviour of this Country. Your Mighty and Most Powerful PM has world wide diplomatic connections that bring employment and prosperity to Dominica. The opposition may accuse your most holy PM of being in cohoots with Communist and Leftist Governments and Countries but look at the benefits that it has brought to little. tiny Dominica…Roads, Stadiums, Bridges and Shops, shops, shops, employing our youths and bringing vast reduction to crime Island-wide!
So my people, my fans, my followers if not your Most Holy Prime Minister, then who? Lieing Linton Lennox? Let us all take a moment to laugh!!! Good! That was a good joke! Now let us go out and give them a CLEAN SWEEP!

You are preaching to the choir Sir! Your leadership style, arrogance should never be forgotten by the people of Dominica. You gave the people a record of three terms that they can judge who you are.

Example: Grand Bay people were told that they were going to build an All Saints Med. University at the center, he also told the single parents in G/bay that he’d provide house for each and everyone of them. Instead, they built a Police Station to incarcerate in the proposed location. And the single parents know the rest of the story.

How much more can our people tolerate? I am saying to you people, the young in particular, whatever monies they dish out for your votes, take it and vote them out of office on election day. That’s the only chance and choice you have in order to have a better tomorrow. Otherwise, it will be business as usual if you make the mistake to elect these individuals back in government.

The man has virtually impoverished and crippled the country, made the people paupers, beggars, adulators, sycophants of the ruling party, and he is BRAZEN AND SHAMELESS ENOUGH, TO SAY TO DOMINICANS “””IF YOU WANT TO BE IN THE POLITICAL RACE GO PAY YOUR DEBTS”””..
Mr Skerrit 99.9999999999% of all working Dominicans, (the Dominica you have brought to the gutters with poverty) are owing. I AM OWING ALMOST ALL THE DFINACCIAL INSTITUTIONS IN DOMINICA, Tom is the same, Dick is the same, Harry is the same, complements you and your cabal.
