PM Skerrit decries ‘negativism’ in Dominica; calls for everyone to work together

The late Chief Minister laid in state at the State House on Friday

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has denounced what he called “too much negativism” in Dominica, saying residents should work together to build the nation instead of fighting each other.

Speaking on Friday as Dominica’s first Chief Minister, the late Franklin A. M. Baron laid in state at the State House in Roseau, he said fighting, insulting, cursing, and ‘black eyeing’ the country, “are not going to help in any way.”

“I find there is too much negativism in this country. I am not saying that all of us have to agree, but there must be a more respectful manner in which we engage ourselves in the country. There must be a more reasoned manner in which we can engage ourselves in the country,” he remarked.

He stated that too much time is being spent on fighting each other.

“We spend too much time fighting each other, life is too flimsy, it can easily be taken away from us, for us to be spending time fighting each other and using up our energy, our God given talent…” he noted.

The Prime Minister argued that many things are happening in the country.

“There are things happening in the country …,” he noted.

He said despited the many challenges the country faces, everyone has a responsibility in building it.

“Each of us has a responsibility to build our country and remain in our country,” he stated. “Criticising our country is not going to make a difference but working together with a common aim and common commission would certainly bring greater development in the advancement of our country. It is not about criticising alone but being able to make a contribution, being here in Dominica, staying in Dominica and building our country.”

Skerrit noted that Dominica is “ours” to build.

“We have to rely on ourselves…Dominicans who live overseas will help and also our friends, our partners, countries, institutions external to Dominica will assist, but first and foremost the development of Dominica is a responsibility of those of us who reside in the country,” he pointed out.

Baron will be laid to rest on Saturday, April 23, 2016, during a State Funeral.

He died at the Princess Margaret Hospital on April 9, 2016.

Ironically all the responses to this are negative finger pointing. I guess it’s easy for people to nit pick the actions of others and not their own.

As an adult only you are responsible for your actions and words… so to say that someone else did this which is why you’re doing it is childish at best!

    The man is right…
Dominicans have become increasingly negative to the point where its the norm. FYI the only people you’re hurting are yourselves!

You can either call for people to shout down opposition leaders in the streets as “traitors”, or you can complain about negativity in the society. But you have to pick one, because you can’t have them both.

    1) Justice for GON Emanuel, his missing millions and the attempt on his life. Is that too negative for you Dr. Skerritt?

    2) Why are our passports being sold to paedophiles in the UAE who can marry kids as young as 3 years old? Is that also too negative for you Dr. Skerritt?

    3) Why is Dominica criminalising buggery among consenting gay males when the rest of the civilised world and indeed, the policeman of the world, the USA, condones, encourages and legalises it?

Perhaps we should all be singing Kumbayah by firesides and telling our grandkids what a great leader you are for teaching us all how to suck salt?

You are negative towards your own people. big time. You by-pass your people and give jobs to foreigners? Why did you throw all that millions in the hands of foreign artists. With your crazy sensual entertainment in Macau, do you know what you have incubated and hatched in Dominica? Why did you try to bring down the women and men in Dominica with your rum shop talk and people working at car rentals. Yes Mr. Big Stuff? who do you think you are with your bloated cabinet and creation of big jobs for the boys who lick for entertainment.
Show your positivity by giving public works and all the people that you hate back their jobs. Get the fogging going in all areas of Dominiica. Since you are in power, the young people especially the young girls have lost their worth and there’s no confidentiality in the work place. Customer relations is poor. Everything is on an all time low. U never practice what you preach but remain in your tinted glass villa throwing stones,

    • April 25, 2016

I listened to his rambling as a person under pressure all the investigations out there are heating up so now he is going to make us believe he cares about the Island and it’s people , so to bribe them we are going to spend some of the passport money and tell them where and when, people don’t be fooled at those kind of actions PM believed he couldn’t be touched he also thought he is smarter that everyone else but the USA Government don’t mess around. Next time make sure you get your speeches long in advance so you can go over them before you go out there and speak, Sir.

    We all will follow.

“Where there is no VISION, the people PERISH.”

I think the honorable thing to do is to remain in Dominica and help build it. But when I looked to your government to help to build a wall alongside a road that might give way in order to build my house, I was told that it is ok to build the wall, but you cannot contribute and DID NOT contribute not even one (1) 8 inch block. far less for a bag of cement.

I humbly agree with the PM. You have politicians – as Herbert Volney would say – whom act under guise of investigative journalism – whom have scandalized upright and forward thinking patriots for their astute democratic positions and candour deployed unsupportive of their (the opposition) political point of view – – – these chalatans make unsubstantiated & libellous allegations — losing in courts of law all the way up to the Prevy Council – they usually have no shread of evidence to support their allegations – they lie boldfacely about their opponents — these very same people will cry down any progressive developments in the economy because the other party is in power – – –

Has he found the road to damascus on this one? I think Skeritt needs to think before he open his mouth trying to stay in office. He should go to marigot hospital and while there address the nation about the state of the place explain why there is money to give to people like the assiciation of music professionals and others but none for the health care of the area.

I recall the Red Clinic, the Bin Bobol, the Fertiliser bobol etc etc. The lack of transparency as far as the passports sales is concerned.
Skerrit, you have failed us, you have failed us big time. This is an admission that you and your corrupt government have created a failed state that is in debt. How does the PM propose overcoming the negativity in the country? What plans and strategies does he have to present to the children and youth who feel that there is no future for them. What is he doing to address the high unemployment rate? The sense of desperation? The high crime rate? Only when he begins to engage all sectors of our society will the negativity disappear. Only when people begin to feel a sense of hope rather than a sense of helplessness will there be a sense of optimism.
Mr PM: every day you should propose one action step that every Dominican can take to improve our country. Shout it out from the mountain tops, go to every radio station and tell us what we should do to feel positive. Tell us how to improve our lives. Show us the opportunities. Yes, let the idiots who want to build the country stay in while you go out and live the good life. Let them stay to break their ankles on the Roseau streets you can’t repair, suffer until death at the hospital that can barely take care of minor injuries, let them settle for NEP work while you give big contracts to foreigners, let them become entrepreneurs in tourism and agriculture both failing industries, until you re-open DCP…yes…they are less than you and your family so let them take that to “build the country” and praise you in the process!

I am quite sure Skerrit was pointing at himself when he made those remarks because he is the one that treats all of us in a very disrespectful way. What contribution could we make when it was on Tuesday morning we found out a contract was signed with a Bajan company and yesterday we heard there was a ground breaking sewo. He gave us no information as to how many contractors applied and why he chose the Bajan company. So for that we should not talk right?

Another thing is, just today we got to know is passport money paying for that. Ok, why did he not use the opportunity to tell us how many passports sold, how much each passport cost and how much received so we could have an idea of where we are. But no, he wants to treat us like the trickery of Acts 5, when Ananias and Saphira lied about the amount of land sold and cost, and thought Peter would swallow their lie. Skerrit must learn to be transparent with us if he really needs our support.

Well-founded criticism should not be perceived as a negative. On the contrary, it should be welcomed as it is more valuable than miss-guided praise.

I could not have put that more succinctly Roger. It are only true friend that tell you the truth, because they care. It are lackeys that flatter and fawn because they care…about themselves!

Mr Prime Minister, how can our God given talents be utilized to build the country when political victimization is so rampant? It is Mahatma Gandhi who said — ‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world.’ Likewise, Mr. PM “Be the change that you wish to see in Dominica.” Let that change begin with you. Too much talk with no positive corresponding action.

  56. April 22, 2016

Im sorry, the train has left the station. What we soe is what we reap, I love Dominica! but hewho without sin, throw the first stone. We all the shock treatment to bring back harmoney and love to our Beautiful Country. I have seen better days?

Do you know the saying, “Life is what you make of it?” Where and how far will consistent criticism ever get anyone? It could make one bitter. It could also be boring reading and listening to negativism. Adults should comprehend that.
Learn a lesson from former Chief Minister Frank Baron (RIP). He did not waste time in life. Note who he aspired to and what he achieved while God gave him the time to do so?
Know also there is a time and place for everything. Adults should keep this in mind.and pass it on to the youths for their present and future benefit.

But but but Skeritt going fuuu? I cannot understand how a man can create a certain negative atmosphere and then criticize it and say is the people that doing it on their own. What has Mr. fatal attraction given us to smile and be happy about for the past 13 years? Unemployment, mal-travay, poverty, ulcerated stomachs? Anyone crying down this labor regime is totally justifiable as they have good reason do so. The minister of questionable finances claimed “There are things happening in the country”, like what??? Ground breaking here, there, and everywhere and none of them projects are never getting completed. He also said that “each of us has a responsibility to build our country and remain in our country,” so it is ours to build and yours to manipulate and destroy? Remain in the country and do what when there is no work??? Is not everybody that interest in taking handouts and quass manje from your broke government. Running a country is not all about posing and grinning for the cameras

look at your biasness. The people are just following the leader.
make a change. Start by making D B SRadio accessile to all parties in the country.

Dominicans need their work supervised likened to immature children. There should never be an open opportunity for someone to turn against his brother and get away with it when confronted in the system in which we coexist. Dominicans are too free to make their own decisions and dont care who gets hurt by it. I think good governance is the important issue here. Governance of “Responsible Dominicans”.

You sound so supercilious and contemptuous. Every Dominican, who qualifies , has a vote and a right to exercise that. The P.M. knows that and is very adept at manipulating that democratic right to his advantage. Thank God we are a free people and I will defend my right, and that of others to my death, to express ourselves freely even if we do not share the same opinions. We are still not a dictatorial state, in the mould of N. Korea where the exalted leader knows best and must not be contradicted on pains of banishment or even death.

The simple thought “let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me ” was born on a mountaintop in California at a workshop for young people in 1955. It quickly caught on and continues to be performed worldwide to this day.

The Prime Minister sets the standards for public discourse for how young people in particular imagine leadership. And I wholeheartedly agree with Dear Leader’s statement that “there must be a more respectable manner in which we engage ourselves in this country.”

Let there be a more respectable standard Dear Leader, and please let it begin with you. Thanks.

yes Roosevelt, I agree with you on that. There is a terrible mood of pessimism in the country. But you must ask yourself why that is and not just dismiss it as negative forces of your political opponents. You are supposed to be in charge and motivate people and inspire them to higher things but your actions and spitefulness cause division. Look in the mirror first Roosevelt. If after more than ten years you cannot unite your people you must ask yourself if you are doing a good job.

If you make up your mind to be negative, to hate the PM and his ministers and all that they stand for, you will never become a positive person, no one can change your mind. You see matters only one way and it is UWP way. It is quite evident, you non-supporters are to be blamed for that as you have too frequently projected.

Elisabeth, let me tell you that I am not a member of the UWP. You must not assume things about people. But I am a critic of how Roosevelt Skerrit is handling things. I care about Dominica, not party leaders and the way things are going will lead to a blowout like a bad tire that should have been replaced long time.

Duckt-Her Skerr from Punjab, STOP hiding behind the nice words and be honest with the people. You have this country in dire poverty while you and the DLP Cabal get fat, get all medical bills paid for by the state, get license to sell our most treasured asset, get private airplane flights , get big ground breaking and welcome reception, get duty free willie-neely, get police protection instead of answering to criminal charges, and the list goes on. Who else in Dca is more disrespectful than you and your cabal? Hypocrite!

We get told go to hell, go sousay-sel, we are too free, go call decent individuals traitor, don’t go to breeze-mart, and the list goes on sir. All this while we have been made to be beggars in our own country, where nepotism and victimization reigns supreme. Are you really serious sir? You have overstayed your welcome and no ground breaking or welcoming ceremony will save you. Time to go!

Punjab mister got his “degree from? The only reason why they messed with him is because Indians ( others) consider people from Punjab to be BLACK, and they treat them like poopoo. I was personally told this by Indians themselves. The Indians who look down on blacks would NEVER invite the PM to their country, much less give him degree. That said, that degree is NULL AND VOID! Nothing good comes from Punjab so stop mentioning his degree.

Man be quiet, there is no negativism in Dominica. We are just rightfully challenging and criticising YOUR policies and YOUR governance. Can you blame us for that? In reality, what have you achieved in your 15 years as PM? The Chinese built a few roads (nobody knows yet at what cost) and that is about it. Of course you started a few other projects (geothermal, Moroccan hotel, abattoir…) but you did not manage to finish one of them. Sir, you govern this nation like a Dictator, there is no transparency in any of your dealings, i.e. MOU China, passport sales etc. If there is nothing to hide, show us the MOU, tell us how many passport have been sold in the last 15 years and tell us how much money was collected for such sales. we are not asking for much but still you do not even want to talk about these issues. I wonder why??? …and then you are trying to sell us the phrase to much negativism in Dominica. Please, give me a break!!!

Yes he must say that after enriching himself and the DONKEY HOLES sat there and let that harped only a few is against it and he and his CABAL hate every guts in those who are speaking the truth
Every one including pm Skerrit should ask him self a question seeing what is in front of him now this CADAVA which is lying in state right now left millions for others to inherit and where is he now.
so when one accumulate enough millions and built viler and live others in pervert because they are thinking like DONKEY HOLES he is taking advantage of them
Please mr. Skerrit have a little compassion on the DONKEY HOLES that are following U!

Not with your modus operandi. Working together never meant taking all orders from a master of non. The parliament is where arguments turn into decision to get the best outcome. This is what election and democracy is all about. It’s about the best ideas finalized and implemented. Critical assessments of your regime is for the best interest of Dominica. I will never be silent and one good deed cannot correct 20 mis deeds when in public office. Roosevelt Skeritt cannot be trusted by his public utterances and actions. Deception, lies, abuse of power, mis-appropriation of funds grabbing on to power for life, positions for friends, wealth that cannot be explained by salary, interference in justice system cannot bring a country together. Dominica sure has better leaders than you Skerrit. When disaster skerrit is over I will go heart and soul in. No it’s just heart. 14 years is more than enough of your BS.

    April 22, 2016

Oh Please Skeritt, you of all people have done so much to keep Dominica underdeveloped , you have no place anymore telling us about how to be patriotic. All what you have done is to make us poorer and keep this land in the mess that it is. Every other parent including yourself are looking for a place overseas to send their children for betterment.
Bad characters like you and most in DLP will never rise to the level of patriots like the late Mr. Baron. So take your pretentious advise and look in the mirror.
