Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has said the Dominican economy has grown in 2016 despite setback by Tropical Storm Erika in 2015 and has performed better than other countries in the region
He spoke during the presentation of the 2017/2018 Budget at the First Meeting of the Third Session of the Ninth Parliament on Thursday.
According to the Prime Minister, Dominica recorded 2.8 percent growth in 2016, and pointed out that projections by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank show the economy will grow by 3.1 percent in 2017 and 2018.
“This buoyant outlook contrasts sharply with the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean,” Skerrit said. “The IMF warns that growth for this region will only be about 1.1 percent this year. The growth experienced by Dominica is clearly better than that of the region and it has also surpassed the average for the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union, ECCU area.”
He spoke of the government’s goal for Dominica.
“Madam speaker our economic goal of realizing a modern, prosperous Dominica fits well within our overarching vision of a peaceful and just Dominica,” he stated. “These objectives steer our fiscal, economic and social policies as well as our engagements in the international community.”
He added, “Madam Speaker, this is Dominica’s moment and we as a country must seize it. We could cash in the growth dividend of successful economic management with a broad expansion of existing spending programs. That would be far easier…but this government is not in the business of sitting back and basking in its success. What we propose is a bold journey that begins this morning.”
And Ian boasting that the massive increase of pepeople on NEP is a sign of economic growth? Just like he said before that VAT is the backbone of our economy. I would not like to let somebody like that hold my purse, because I will always be brokes.
Only labourats that do not travel will believe that fake news. We are living in an enlightened age, so you cannot fool us anymore.
Please reduce the VAT to 10% as we have been doing so much better than the other countries. Even St. Lucia (our so called “sister island”) doing better than us in even bananas now, so what’s wrong with our country? Dominicans wise up! Realize that the government does not care about it’s citizens, but only the amount of votes it receives to stay lying to your face! You face been warned!!
here it is the statistic report of 2016 economic activities in which my beloved Dominica, contrary to what it’s PM say came out last among OECS nations. http://www.devinfo.org/oecsinfo/libraries/aspx/dataview.aspx
I could research myself and not be fooled by this so called honorable man.
anonymous, why did they remove the link from the internet, We need to know the truth,Skerrit lying again
Mr. Skerrit reproduce the statistics to back your statement!
Politicians are the most dishonest, deceitful and mendacious professionals in the world. When they are voted out of government many of them are dragged before a court of law stand accused of fraud, bribery, embezzlement and all sort of corrupt practices. I saw some recent statistics from the IMF and Dominica was lagging behind every country in the sub-region in almost every important economic category. Mr. Skerrit has to be completely delusional make such frolicsome statements about the prevailing economic conditions in the country. If you are doubtful, ask the average person around the country about his/her daily struggles to put food on the table and keep up to date with the weekly or monthly bills. The PM should stop preying on the ignorant.
DNO i am very disappointed in your reporting. I was expecting a synopsis of the budget. Can you kindly highlight the main areas of the budget? Good Journalism requires us to educate the public.
DNO streamed it life in real time (sound & video) free of charge and it was an excellent production. What more do you want?
The Gov’t salary negotiating team paints a defferent climate of the ecomony from the ministers. That is the reason why the Gov’t finds it so difficult to offer increases in salaries. So much lies. 0 0 0
“Bold journey” Who does the evil Dr supremo think he is, Captain “Kirk” from star trek, on the star ship “Enterprise” Blodly exploring. But here is my list of countries dominica did better, And not by much, Bird Island, Rikers Island, Cuba, Syria, North Korea, and yes Venezuela.
roosvelt skerrit where is your evidence to back up such a foolish claim? Look at the other countries that have offered and paid salary increase to their public serverce workers! What did you pay here? 0, 0 and 0. Go bury yourself boy? You have no shame you wicked criminal! Boy you and your evil cabal deserve to rot in jail! No work! No salary increase! All you can do is sell passports! And buy votes! Your time ending for you to hit the calaboose!
Its typical of him. Immature and a failed and Odd Prime Minister. Waist of time, the worse Dominica and CARICOM has seen of him since Haiti. Corrupt partners in political crimes.
Didn’t skerritt hear his president warn against fake new? I would really like to know what are the drivers which contributed to this economic growth.
We doing better but Red Clinic still dere, nuclear war on pit toilets and NEP still there? How many jobs has the private sector created in the past year?
Just because you doing better in stealing our money that doesn’t mean the country is doing better
Amen, and the number in the NEP programme is up too. Skerrit is a pathological fibber. He thinks all Dominicans are dunces.
We doing better but you offering civil servants 0,0,0% increases?
Really? We’re doing better than other countries? St. Lucia introduced VAT 15% in 2012 and has now reduced it to 12.5%. Since we are doing so much better than the rest then our VAT should be reduced even further…
“According to the Prime Minister, Dominica recorded 2.8 percent growth in 2016, and pointed out that”(Roosevelt Skerrit).
Where has this man Roosevelt find the nerve to make a stupid statement like that? Talk is cheap, and talking garbage to people who have no idea how economic growth is accomplished will listen to Roosevelt bogus, and lie comment; and clap!
I challenge Roosevelt Skerrit to produce some written statistics pointing out in what area of the economy this growth occurred. California which is a state Within the United has the fifth largest economy in the world, California’s economy is larger that of Russia, with more industries than most nations on earth, however, in 2016, if I am not mistaken the economy grew less than 4%, and if there is anyone out there who has some statistics or information to correct me pleas bring it forward.

Continue:
Skerrit brays again that Dominica’s economy is better than all of the islands in the region, only a mad man would make such a stupid comment: I need to ask Roosevelt; is Dominica more prosperous, and more developed than Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua, and any of the rest. With the exception of Antigua all of the islands I mentioned export some product of some kind.
Antigua’s economy depends, on tourism, and indeed millions people visit Antigua, than will ever visit Dominica
There are plenty more industries on those islands, which exports manufactured products, which brings in revenue, and foreign exchange. Dominica main industry is the sale of passports, how can the sales of passports grow the economy of a country? Only fool would try to convince people that Dominica is doing better than the rest of the islands in the region, and only fools would believe that!
This is not the first time Roosevelt made that stupid comment, that guy is delusional
But what reading dere nuh? Is joke dat or wha? Look mister comeback with dat “Dominica is doing better than regional countries” chant again.
But Skerrit, your speech writers run out of new speeches to give you or is elections that really around the corner?
To me it was around the last elections, we were hearing these magnificent proclamations about how Dominica is doing better than other islands in the region. After elections, the proclamations change to “Oh is not only in Dominica such and such problems exist”
Man, these jokers in dat government of Skerrit dere eh…………………………………(smh)…………
#SkerritMUSTGoNOW
Long live our PM! may God bless and guide you on your journey and give you the protection you need from the evil men who aims to destroy you and our country this too shall pass.
My Foot, bless what,,,bless him for what,,,,,,? Corruption, Bin Bobol, CBI, where the riches are with the great men somewhere in Government. Dominica has seen the worse PM and worse most corrupt government.
Go to hell…..go to hell….go to hell
I am not going to dispute our economy did better than that of others in the region but I would like to see tangible facts. Example, as a man on the ground I would like the PM or Mr. Tonge to tell us how many Dominicans that migrated to those regional islands in question because they see a better future there for them, and contrast that with how many from the region that moved to Dominica because they see a better future here for them and their families. Please note that I am not referring to drug dealers that coming here to do there drugs, neither am I referring to CROOKS and crminals like Aliereza Monfared and others who are hiding from international authorities and felt like DOMINICA was the best place to hide, because our government gives good accommodation to them.
What where when???? Skerrit have failed and failed miserable
If he had failed, Dominica would be in the dumps. It would be no more and there would be real misery. My relatives and friends of all n Dominica can attest to that.
You are the one who failed and failed Dominica. Instead of your criticism, why not do something good for Dominica? Help some nationals who are in need of. Otherwise, your criticism is in vain, fruitless of course, a price, one day you will pay for. Mark my words.
Dominica is in the dumps, take the crime rate, unemployment, health system, exports, we are completely dependent on selling passports, how more dumps can D/ca gets???
The truth is , you statements is outdated and out of touch with reality in Dominica, it is just not original, it is fake news and a fake concept from to appease Skerrit the inept POM leading a ther most and worse corrupt government in Dominica and CARICOM, after the infamous Papa Doc and Baby Doc of Haiti.
So let the truth be known, I just gave it to you, you and your silly views are not original
Are we really doing better than other countries in the region? Smh. Why the Gov’t can’t offer salary increases for 2016?
Have we compared our standard of living with the other countries in the region?
These information are only on paper but not on the ground. You guys are riding your high horses but you need come down on the ground to realise what is going on the ground.
Please, stop fooling the innocent.
You are letting off steam. Cool it! Should you not know that not everyone thinks as you do, talks as you do and also do not all agree with you?
If I were to say that some people do not need the few dollars of salary increase, they would be upset. When they receive it the union gets its share of membership, as when an attorney sues for his/her client and wins. They take a cut. How much is left?
Let me inform you further. Where I reside, when employees get an increase, they must pay income tax on it. By the time tax is deducted, what do they have left?
An increase has to be exorbitant enough that you could go to the store, whichever and purchase something be it that you have to pay tax on it if it is not food – groceries..
I am informing you, it would be better that some of us never get an increase. I have informed my MPP – Provincial Legislature and MP – Federal Parliament about it. Furthermore staff must efficiently produce to warrant an increase.
Always spewing some ocrap that makes no sense. And No MP will listening to you, trying to fool people into thinking you’re important. Lol MP have time with your insignificant two cents?
The Truth is no one agrees with you and comprehends the nonsense and blind loyalty yo have for this inept Skerrit. You have received another thumbs down.
Skerrit is a failure and now a nuisance to Dominica. Get this little immature boy out of Big man business. He cannot run a country,
Don’t be fooled. Going from having $5 to having $6 is 10% growth. Just thst percentage alone doesn’t tell the entire story. Also comparing against latin america means we have to include countries like Venezuela and Brasil who are reeling from economic mismanagement thus skewing the average. Most of the other countries are MUCH better off than us even if they have registered lower growth rates.
Also how much do the funds from the CBI program factor into that equation. Even the PM himself admits that the CBI program is not sustainable so it would be pretty misleading if it was included in that calculation
Better in what? selling passports? Hahahaha
Once when I was in JA as a student there was so muh action one weekend all over JA that a newpaper headline was : Can JA Take so much action this weekend. Man that was an overload of activity. Football eliminations, Car Racing, Track & field, Carnival, it was in April of a certain year. James Ingram was on island so was Micheal Bolton, There was tennis and a jazz session sponsored by Life of JA a jerk session somewhere big deal and many more activities sure was an overload. I was there it was a mad time in JA.
What’s my point you may be salivating with desire to know lol
Easy, can Dominica & Dominicans continue with all these yrly budgets which is a remix, recurring BS yr after yr? Too much BS skerrit et AHs Too much BS people time to physically remove these hoodlums from the parliament. No apologies, ifs ,buts nor maybes .This is an overload of BS Dominicans.
In democratic countries of all, governments must produce a budget. The opposers may not like it but it has to be done. The government must ignore the critics because they voted for another party. They are not out to encourage the reigning government. They are out to help all nationals, as Christians.
This guys thoughts and writing appears to be a remix of the same old garbage we get from Skerrit and his corrupt government. Skerrit and corrupt Labour government are tainted and apply corrupt practices …this is why we are so poor. and they are so rich. Put that in your pipe and smoke as yo have nothing new of intelligence to tell us. You are in denial, a blind political bat.
I thought Skerrit was from VC now he is showing signs of madness is he from Ahfouahweeland?
There are many of our parlimentarians past & present born in villages where they never lived. So Skerrit may have been born in Marigot Wesley, woodford Hill any of the tri villages known collectively as Ahfouahwee land like Germany called Deuthland. Hahahahahaahhahah
Learn to spell and stop smoking the weed. It is Deutschland you dunce head.
There is cliché as MAD AS A FOX -our FOX HAS BEEN SIDELINED SINCE 1997-
So we can now say Skerrit is as mad as our neighbour to the North Trump & one to our south Maduro.
Smoke this Skerrit et Al
Never heard of a mad fox, a sly fox, yes.
so if we doing so well… take out the VAT nuh. yes de same VAT dat was supposed to be for 2 years. take ot out we doing good. mwen sav. wespayway.
OK; fine if Dominica did better than the other regional countries. Why is it; it is in the last position this year? It is simply because you never targeted what was the priority for the country; which is growth. As I often say Dominica was much better of in the days of Eugenia and Patrick which is over 20 years ago than now.
You are not the only one to be blamed; you are also badly surrounded. The blind are leading the blind.
you don’t expect everybody to buy dat………..no information to justify your utterances.
Skerrit had spent his time in office giving out toilet to Dominicans and sad but true if so many Dominicans have yo wait for a handout toilet it is safe to say thst they can’t afford to travel. Those of us who travel at l rady to the other Caribbean island or more specifically the OECS there is no way Dominica’s economy is outperforming the other islands. On the Tarmac in St Lucia I see American, Jetblue, British Airways, Delta, Virgin and more. In port are 3-4 ships. The hotels up north (Rodney Bay) and other areas are doing good. In St Kitts I see 6 ships in port and major airlines on the tarmac. Can we be doing better than these islands with LIAT droping off 10 passengers and our fee hotels operating near 30 % occupancy.
Antigua, St Vincent, Grenada are all ahead of Dominica. The DLP gover nment kno w very well thst the impoverished Kn Laborites can’t travel and therefore can’t reject the lies
Did he not say a that Dominicans in the region were coming back for jobs? Liar
Hello and good afternoon my people. Well Mr Prime Minister can you tell us where did the economy grow, for example. How many jobs were created in the private sector and how many new employees the Government hired. Also can you tell us how many jobs were created using the CBI funds and by which investor.
when will government or parliament stop wasting the house of parliament time by giving linton two full hours of debate on such a productive budget. just negative remarks in return then go to Q95 mic and bla bla bla. these two hours can be use to Ian Douglas to educate the listening public out there
Hon. Linton is a great politician, a professional who researched and presented,. Well articulated and balance.
Try to compete this with Inept, stained Skerrit.
You have nothing good to say of Skerrit so you wanna pin down Lennox.
more money in my pocket through my salary and with the opportunity to extend my income through those with farm land and trade like skills.
lol…..lol….lol…
Budget Debate, bring your Blue, attachi bag, Blue suits. Bla, Bla, Bla, adjourene senidi!!!
Wow 2.6% is dismal considering that money should be flowing into the economy from post-Erika recovery efforts.
2.6 % growth but zero, 0.00 in salaries.
Sugar Daddy type Budget..just throw corn in chicken foot..
Dominicans can continue to pretend that Skerrit living under a Rock..Which Dominica that performed better than Regional countries in 2016?
The Shame and Embarrassment continues..
In selling passports lol
Those in favor? i,i,i, DE, eyes have it. Those againt/ Walk out, and leave your ID`s. A Red hot Buget, to a section of Blue VeX, It`s not easy to Run a Country. We like it so.
it is amazing how deep your ignorance run – walk around roseau and listen. ask the business men
but again your eyes are bowed and your head close – why bother tell you or show
when will it end. When will the ignorance of my Country come to an end.. when will the true statistics of my country be out in black and white. When will we stop playing with statistical figures come to an end .
Skerrit have you heard of the term JOBLESS GROWTH?With the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars of CBI money spreading all over the place are you not ASHAMED to stand in our parliament, and tell us the economy only grew by 2.1%? THATS ALMOST 0% growth. What a doggone shame, and more reasons why more people are showing their disgust with DLP.The doling out of CBI money for votes, will only plunge us into more poverty!Clows and idiots, you all are.
SKERRIT MUST GO
SKERRIT MUST GO
SKERRIT MUST GO NOW
Just like the thing that made you! and go and make him go! moron
I vex!
Disrespect shown to leader opposition and Dominicans by extention. He was given only 21 hours (4 working hours) to respond to a budget that took almost 4 hours to present.
Note that I am NOT a supporter of UWP or any party whatsoever. I didn’t even vote last election because I didn’t find good choices in my constituency.
However injustice is injustice by whatever name or shade it comes!
I really VEX
Vibz, what the PM is really saying is that LL is 90 times more capable than him. Since he took at least three months for his preparation but allows ONE day for the opposition leader to respond. Do the maths. But I concur that this is the most BLATANT INJUSTICE1
HOTEP1
And still lennox Linton knocked Skerrit’s presentation into a cocked hat. He very cleverly took a perceived disadvantage to the higher ground, outmanoeuvred his opponents and bombarded them a masterly vision of his Dominica, now and in the future. He was like David against Goliath.
I can’t see how Skerrit can possibly match that. No amount of money can substitute real, natural talent.
We need an international airport
We need real leadership first……..
I just Listened and watched Lennox Linton’s response. I was spellbound. It was simply brilliant. That man can represent our country in the international arena any time without shaming us.
Yes he spoke !!!!! what else?????
Skerrit who the hell are you foolin.name the countries please.
I wish it was true but how comes our wages are still much lower than those in St. KItts or S.Lucia for example. Selfpraise is comfort to a fool
The wages will remain low, because, the economy is not growing.Where is the hundreds of millions of dollars of the CBI money going?Only Skerrit knows. But he is shameless enough to come with his idiocy of 2.1% growth. This DLP government is a waste and a disgrace to leadership.
SKERRIT MUST GO
SKERRIT MUST GO
ERRIT MUST GO NOW!
