PM Skerrit says majority of country has confidence in him

Skerrit (left) will face a vote of no confidence to be  tabled by Linton

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has responded to moves by the Opposition to table a motion for a vote of No Confidence in him for allegedly mismanaging the economy when Parliament convenes on October 19.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the York Valley Bridge in Layou on Thursday, he pointed to the government’s handling of the aftermath of Tropical Storm Erika, which ravaged sections of the island in late August last year, saying the majority of Dominicans have confidence in him.

“But you know, the majority of this country, that you have every confidence in this Prime Minister of this country,” he said to applause.

He noted that following the passage of Erika, the government has not faltered on payments to creditors or on salaries to public workers.

“Not withstanding Erika, this government has not faltered on its payments to creditors,” the Prime Minister remarked. “Not faltered on its payment of salaries to public officers, not one of our social safety nets program has been set aside because of Tropical Storm Erika. All these programs have been funded, not withstanding the additional challenge of Tropical Storm Erika in Dominica.”

He blamed those who he said sit by idle, waiting for a salary and doing nothing for their constituents for the vote of no confidence.

“And there are some who just sit idly by waiting for a little parliamentary salary, do nothing for their constituents, do not help one child with a school book or a school shoe, spend all their time on a radio program, being negative, nothing constructive and then they talk about vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister of Dominica.”

The motion will be tabled in Parliament by Leader of the Opposition, Lennox Linton.

In it, the opposition blames the Prime Minister for mismanaging the island’s economy as evidenced in “rising unemployment, sharp decline in the performance of agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, construction and service sectors and an increase in the trade deficit and a massive national debt.”

If I am the government side, I would offer ”NO COMMENT”. I would not give Lennox any satisfaction. I would laugh, smirk and make negative gestures. This is the best way to dilute his grandstanding. He has nothing to offer but to try and get center stage.

  4. In Support of Dr. Skerritt
    October 17, 2016

Dr. Skerritt does have the majority of Dominicans supporting him.

    Let’s look at the stats:-

    1) of the the 40000 voting adults in Dominica, say, 12,000 support him;
    2) of the 39,000 full CBI citizens living OUTSIDE Dominica, ALL support him.

Therefore, Dr. Skerritt has 52,000 out of 70,000 Dominicans embracing him as their Commander in Chief.

With a more than 75% majority support, he can do whatever he likes and that is exactly what he is doing.

You are right, they, this so called Labour administration perform the Arte of will and deal well, it s called deception, corruption, Bobol. The Workers Party is professional enough and alert to observe and bring this corruption to Dominicans that they remain informed and alert. The question is , what will be Skerrit`s legacy?
It will be the fear of the Corruption in Dominica revealed efficiently by Hon Linton, who has discovered many bobols and questionable deals that this Corrupt lead Labour Government, lead by inept Skerrit.
It may be called the Arte El Labore, whatever that means.

    October 15, 2016

    Dr. Skerritt is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!

As there are more than 40,000 people with CBI Dominican passports. Let’s add on say, 10,000 of Dominicans who love Dr. Skerritt – total, 50,000.

We then have 50,000 people out of 70,000 (around 75%) who have confidence in Dr. Skerritt.

This means that Dr. Skerritt can do whatever he wants to the inhabitants of Dominica.

NOW, DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE SHEER GENIUS BEHIND THE PASSPORT SALES PROGRAM?

mr pm with all due respect dominica is not a communist country…..dominica is a democracy, how many terms have you served already??? it does not matter what your approval ratings are at this point to be honest…. having one man in power for decades is not what a democracy is. it is simply not beneficial in a democratic country to have the same man in power for so long. all this does is create COMPLACENCY. if you dont know that word please look it up. I am sure there are others in dominica who are just as capable and deserve the chance to govern the country. worst case scenario the people dont like him/her, then we vote them out! that is how democracies work…

The No Confidence Vote is even more clearer in the speech Skerrit gave…

    1. PM is asking the Leader of the Opposition to take 15 Petrocas that was meant for people who lost their homes in Petit Savanne and give to the people in Marigot who have not lost homes.

This is called mis-appropriation of properties meant for people in Petit Savanne ….in short CORRUPTION

Our PM think it so honorable that he is blasting Linton for not taking up him offer.

I’m not a supporter of the DLP, UWP or Freedom I look at what is happening on the ground and with my people. the people are going thru difficult times they are hurting, all around them are hopelessness and nothing is been done for them, instead all you hear is that they are lazy a word the PM throws around very callously. I looked at the man and listen to him over and over lie to the people, he speaks but nothing of substance comes out. He said Linton is a joke but I do believe he is wrong it’s the PM that’s the joker.
PM said he gave the village council of Marigot $30.00 to do road repairs but the monies are sitting in a fixed account for over a year he was told in the street, to any one with common sense does that have any merit , why wouldn’t they use the money for the roads and what does that have to do with Linton because he cannot stop them from using it.. Lies are come nature to PM and he should be embarrassed but he’s not, he feels nothing because he knows the people…

Dr. Skerritt says what he does and does what he says.

In these tough times, he is a redoubtable leader and should be cherished and admired by all of us.

I therefore propose an Anthem to Dr. Skerritt which should be mandatorily sung at the start of every school session in Dominica:-

Dr. Skerrit, our Leader who serves us tirelessly
And gives our tax money to foreign countries
Your enemies may write you down in history
      With their bitter, twisted lies,
They may call you traitor and scammer
But still, like a snake, you rise.

      Do your enemies upset you?

Dominica is better than America, but the first chance you all get you come here, and remain illegally, most of the time end up in Jail for years, it is because such idiotic comments from fools like you why the United States does not do more to help Dominica, compound with the Skerrit kind misappropriating donations, and tax payers money!

I have been waiting to see some of the main culprits against the PM and Government say anything against the place they live now but nothing. So it is very difficult to take the same people seriously.

      • October 17, 2016

In North America we speak out and our Governments takes our concerns seriously because they treat people with respect, the criminals that do wrong they deal with them according to the rule of LAW. With the drop in the productive sector, the drop in the healthcare sector, the poiticizing and victimization in law enforcement, u have brought Dominica to where it is today, high crime, high cancer rates, less cruise ship visit and after 15 years of skerrit, u can only boast of accumulating alot of personal richers for yourself by using state resources. If you are a young; you should be looking for a better future, a better life than been a sucker to Skerrit. Skerrit boasted, and made the claim that he is the richest prime minister in the Caribbean, how much do you have in a bank?

By the time it is all over, Skerrit will leave Dominica, as a French citizen, and head to France, Martinique, or Guadeloupe, where he will spend his corrupt riches; maybe he will join his American Children in some State in America to live happily ever after while you remain in Dominica and crawl on your yellow belly hoping for a handout!

Roosevelt, sometimes when people believe they are loved and respected, it is not always the case. The confidence you believe the majority of Dominicans have in you might simply be an act, caused by fear; fear of you

Then again whereas Dominica is a boring poor country, where eighty (80%) percent of the people have no annual income to look forward to; they depend on the handouts you give to them from your red clinic, and from the hands of your puppet clones in the villages around the island!

The majority fear if they show their disgust, and no confidence in you, that will result in you victimizing them be cutting off the few dollars you give to them.

There are many people who receives an envelope marked “from the prime minister, with two hundred dollars in it; they do not know if the source, is mandatory from the government treasury or your pocket.

    1. Please call a general election by December 2016
    2. Do not pay anyone in the diaspora or buy ticket for anyone to come to vote
    3. Do not pay any local or treat anyone to vote
    4. Do not bring down any big name artists to perform
    5. Clean up the Election list
    6. Give voter’s ID ONLY to qualified voters

If all the above are done then we will be certain that people have confidence in you or do not have confidence in you. Otherwise the result of an election will be based who have more money to buy votes and that should NOT be mistaken for “Confidence in me”

Therefore why would the UWP want all of us beggars to vote for them if that is the way they see us; because if we are to believe Cameron there would bound to be more beggars than passport sellers.

With this mindset the UWP is doomed to ever winning another general election. We beggars have to eat to survive and why give our vote to people we know who will do nothing to feed us. We may be beggars but we have our vote to cast for the person and party we believe will help the beggars better.

The Bible teaches us that Jesus fed the multitude with 2 loaves of bread and 5 fishes and he told his disciples to go feed the hungry and clothe the naked. The PM and the government are much better disciples than the UWP.

Bumbble Lee do you know that Dominica has the highest amount of tertiary level people per ca-pita in the whole of Caricom????

Go To Hell with your old talk about we Dominicans being ILLITERATE!!!!!! The last time i checked we all have a right to support whoever we want to and even have the right not to support any political party…. You love and have confidence in LENNOX LINTON good for you there will be no insult coming your way for your democratic right to do so… i expect you to show the same respect for those who support and have confidence in the current PM or if you want to say AM!!!!!

Linton will never learn. Why is he wasting time putting forward motions which will be abortive? The PM is doing a wonderful job and Parliament will treat this motion with the irrelevance that it is. Why doesn’t Linton raise issues which is relevant to his Constituency or genuinely in the public interest? Is he the best that UWP can come up with???

    • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
      October 14, 2016

The reason why Skerrit does whatever he wish in Dominica is because of idiots like you, if we remotely exists in a democracy, whatever Lennox is doing, is part of his job as an elected member of the parliament.

He is representing a constancy, and if he finds that the Prime Minister is inept, and has become bankrupt of political ideas, and can no longer function effectively, which caused the country to be stagnant; it his responsibility to call for a vote of no confidence in Skerrit.

That’s how it works in a democracy!

It is people like you drowning in you foolishness which promotes Skerrit’s dictatorship in the country, every dictator, always indulged in Skerrit’s rhetorical nonsense, just before they fall, there will be a revolution in Dominica if we are not careful, and it will not be the supporters of the UWP who will start it.

That Revolution will take place when your kind who are puppets depending on Skerrit to feed your hungry belly stop getting the handouts from…

        Mr. Telemaque,

We need your help. Skerrit and his band of Obeah people have CHANGED THE BIBLE IN DOMINICA!!!

Mr. Skerritt must tell us now why ALL BIBLES IN DOMINICA NOW ARE READING THAT:-

JESUS WAS ‘HANGED’ ON A TREE ((Acts. 5.30), ,NOT CRUCIFIED
THERE ARE ‘BOTTLES’ IN THE BIBLE NOW?????
THE ‘WOLF’, NOT ‘LION’ IS LAYING WITH THE LAMB
THERE ARE REFERENCES TO ‘PISS’ AND ‘PISSING’ IN THE BIBLE
(Samuel. 25.22 So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall. )
THE LORD’S PRAYER HAS CHANGED – NOW WE FORGIVE ‘DEBTS’, NOT THOSE WHO ‘TRESPASS AGAINST US’.

We, the Christians of Dominca are frightened and DEMAND that an end be put to this. We are tired of our minds being played with.

        HE MUST STOP NOW!!!!

May our Savior Jesus Christ help us!

      Do not be disrespectful.

Our CBI/ second passport Dominicans have more money than any Dominican. In number they are equivalent to more than 80% of voting public resident in Dominica.

They have every right, as citizens to vote in our elections and our PM,, Dr. Skerritt, has every right to bus them over at taxpayer’s expense. I know that as non-residents, they don’t pay tax, but they have already paid their USD200,000 for a passport which in cost, is more than 99.9% of resident Dominicans will pay in tax in their lifetime.

      Know your place.

The few take of gas + 500 you a giving freely to people when the fortunately reach 100 yrs. the 300 that you give to those over 80 ,the way you make them dance, the insults that the majority appreciates hearing during election ,those who take a nasty pleasure to know what the opposition are doing in their every day life and also their family;this is why you win he election. The is no growth in Dominica, instead of building factories and promote agriculture ,you send the police with poisonous gas after the working population. You can offer money to Haiti but health clinics are opening clothes on lines in a rat hole instead of putting dryers…The side walk in Roseau is damaged ,old building are a sore in the sight of tourists and Dominicans yet they still vote for you to be back in power …Dominicans like mediocrity that’s why they cannot see further than their nose. One ex prime minister gave police orders to shoot locks men ,see his condition now, your turn will come Skerrit.

they accept the tricks this guy as PM does, his cabinet can’t ask him anything, plus Dominica does even have a Media or Press, they refuse to educate the masses

Skerritt, where is the empirical evidence that the majority of the people have confidence in you.You have not presented a poll or other facts to disprove the failures leveled at your administration..You raise the nonsense that some politicians wait on the pay from Parliament and do nothing for their constituents. This points to a failure on the part of your 15 plus years administration for failure to provide jobs and grow the economy.Your government holds and controls the purse strings of the country and have not got much to show the world for it’s misuse, why don’t you, thinking outside the box, grant the opposition access to a percentage of the tax and other revenues of the country. This would breaking new ground in world politics, and cement your true place in history forever, which is what you are seeking to do but with failed strategies and policies, then you would be lifting up all Dominicans

      October 14, 2016

Isn’t the results of the last general election and the last by-election enough evidence to convince you that the people have confidence in him?

      Are you that blind?

You may not like the man, but the majority of Dominicans voted his party into power. You don’t have to like the results, but the people spoke very loudly and clearly about who they wanted to represent them.

In the end, that is all that matters.

That’s the tone language of how dictators react when they’re under scrutiny..

But the simple issue is how you can be proud of Dominica being the Poorest and Slowest Economy in the Eastern Caribbean Block? eh..

The Move from China from Taiwan has negatively impacted the economy..even though the Chinese have built some structures which aren’t of the highest quality, there has not being a spin off in terms of them renting homes, employing many dominicans etc.

But what sector can Dominica be proud since this player came to be a leader,—-ZERO
He has not lifted the minds of Dominica but his selfish gains just to be in power.

He travels more than he is in Dominica and refuses to update the public on his movements and findings …he is a joker period..which the people of dominica allow..

Skerrit is so strategic. He speaks of TSErika as if his government has made any gains since then. Don’t forget also that TSErika occured only 1 year ago, what about the decade of governance before that?. He will continue to pull the heart strings of Dominicans while avoiding the real issues that are raised in the VONC..Has he countered the claims of the rise in unemployment? Increased trade deficit? increased national debt?? The systemic eradication of Agriculture?? Objectively defend those issues..!!.instead he has replaced all of those meaningful issues with social programs of dependency, and he touts about it..!! .

But how does the PM roll in money and dress so well when the rest of us are watching our pennies and catching hell? By selling the country passports….BUT ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END!
    Some questions:
How much does it cost the state to house, feed, employ and clothe the people of Petite Savanne? When will they be re housed? How long will that situation persist?
What about the poor farmers you have abandoned? Are you aware that some crops were destroyed by TS Matthew?
When will Marigot get a decent medical facility?
When will civil servants get a decent pay rise?
What is the unemployment rate among our youth?
What is the poverty rate in the rural areas?
Do you understand the term working poor?
Are you aware that a lot of a lot of persons cannot meet their mortgage?

And he may very well be right. However, in a lot of cases the sitting idly by goes on both sides. uwp needs to involve itself in more community intitiatives like how Danny did in his community. Their supporters should push their candidates into the “lime light” through accomplishments of good communal work for their communities. Off course there is still politics involved; projects will get stopped and sabotaged. but at least the people will see you are working and trying and if you are being sabotaged while executing your good deeds and civic duties the people will also see just like how the people in Goodwill are seein the lindo park project. so yes maybe the majority of people here have MORE confidence in the PM because the opposition only MOSTLY talks and continually cries. time for action UWP. NOT protest not strike. but actual work .

  55. thus far
    October 14, 2016

The majority of the country must have full confidence in you when you have got them to a state of poverty and dependence on handouts from you. They must have confidence when the bread they will eat next week Thursday will come from a handout from your clinic on Wednesday. Dominicans , it is high time we see the true purpose of this Govt. Keep them poor and hungry and we will always have control over them!!
