PM Skerrit wants strict adherence to One China Policy by all national leaders

Skerrit believes all national leaders must adhere to the One China Policy

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has stated that there must be a strict adherence to the One China Policy by all national leaders in Dominica “irrespective of partisan creed.”

He spoke at the ground breaking ceremony for the restoration of the West Coast Road in Macoucherie on August 22nd 2017.

“There is but one China and the greatest tribute that we can pay, as a nation to this dear friend, is to let it be known that strict adherence to the One China Policy is the resolve of all national leaders in Dominica, irrespective of partisan creed or affiliation,” he said.

He added that there can be no doubt in anyone’s mind where the best interest of Dominica lies, especially at this point in island’s development as a nation.

Skerrit spoke of those who continuously ridiculed China as a friend, “who has done, repeatedly, nothing but good for Dominica.”

In an apparent swipe at the United Workers Party (UWP) whose members returned to Dominica after visiting China for ten days, Skerrits said, “Indeed, we have observed that not only has the rhetoric subsided but indeed, like Doubtful Thomas, they asked and were granted the opportunity to thrust their hand in the side of the demonized, to make sure that indeed China was and is who it said it was and is.”

Skerrit said that he is hopeful that those who have now visited China will finally agree that China is “indeed for real,” and he looks forward to the day when such individuals “under the banner of their organisation” would “gladly and boldly” proclaim the One China Policy.

“Many of us did not have to visit China to appreciate its sincerity and commitment to friendship. But others who had their doubts, have now visited and I am hopeful that, though somewhat belatedly, they would come around to the viewpoint that China is indeed “for real”, as our younger folks would say,” Skerrit stated.

He remarked that he has observed that “certain individuals” were not in attendance at the ground breaking ceremony, but he is leaning on the belief that the situation is more of a consequence “of them being jet lagged” than “the familiar and characteristic rejection” of such invitations.

Everyone now accepts this international political situation, so what is PM Skerrit going on like an ignorant about? It is now internationally and universally accepted, since Taiwan’s UN engagement and participation came to an end in 1971: “China opposes this. It argues, correctly, that only sovereign states can enjoy membership in the UN; any state that manages to enter into the UN system as a full member in its own right is seen by the other member states as a fully-fledged independent country. China also claims Taiwan as part of its territory and denies that Taiwan is a sovereign state. Therefore, China is adamant about preventing recognition of Taiwan as a sovereign state and its membership in the UN system. So far China has been successful in this endeavor.”

I am so embarrassed by this PM’s little boy mannerisms, expressions, and petty way of representing the Commonwealth of Dominica in a diminished and demeaning way! The PM has no class, no decorum, no Statesmanship or diplomatic tact. He acts like any man on the street! Raise the standards and prestige of the Office of Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica. At the very least try to act and speak like a Statesman!

He is the PM. He has the right to inform nationals about it. You are trying to deny him his right as PM. You did not have to go so far as to state he has no class, etc. You are out of place. It is also disrespectful and rude of you. This is the problem with some of you. You cannot comment on a topic without throwing words and spewing insults. I read the caption of your report and was about to write “sorry Mr. Skerrit you are not in a position to want or determine that, then I read the report and what I read was:

“There is but one China and the greatest tribute that we can pay as a nation to this dear friend is to let it be known that strict adherence to the One China Policy is the resolve of all national leaders in Dominica irrespective of partisan creed or affiliation”

Does that equate to: “PM wants strict adherence to One China Policy by all national leaders” ? It sounds more like an idealistic wish. A want seems to me something that you are in a position to demand and sure enough people are commenting here in the context of your interpretation as contained in your caption.

What is the ‘One China’ policy?
US President Donald Trump has agreed to honour the long-standing “One China” policy after previously placing it in doubt. The BBC explains this hugely sensitive diplomatic tightrope.

The U.S. recognition of a “One China” policy stems from 1979, when the U.S. switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China (PRC). “The Taiwan question bears on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and touches our core interests,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said in January after President Trump questioned the “one China” policy. “Adherence to the one China principle serves as the political foundation for the development of China-U.S. ties. If this foundation is wobbled and weakened, then there is no possibility for the two countries to grow their relations in a sound and steady way and cooperate on key areas.” https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/06/13/what-is-one-china-policy/102806774/

With due respect to Taiwan and its people, all countries now respect “China’s one policy.”
What the PM implied is that China has immensely helped Dominica and you should recognize that and have respect for China. The UN recognizes China as “one policy”. Why not others?
You have the right to think in whatever manner you feel you should. It is your opinion and no one can take it away from you. However respect China’s one policy.

Roosevelt, are you a man or a mouse?

You speak like a child, in other words, you are kissing the Butt of the chines, and expect every other political leader in the Caribbean, and Dominica for that matter to kiss the behind of the Chines; hoping to get a free hand out! Roosevelt there are no free lunches where it pertains to the chines; to them it is strictly business, that is why China has one of the worlds largest economy, and they did not get their by kissing up to any world power such as the United States, or any European nation!

Your obsession with this nonsense, of complete adherence, proves you are a very weak and incompetent man to be a leader; that is why I question your sanity. When you advise leaders to adhere to the one Chine policy, all you are doing is tell people don’t stand on your own two feet ” hold fast, or stick to the Chines, glue, or fuse one self, to the Chines.
It is one thing to be loyal to a national cause but to ask a nation to kiss the gluteus…

    • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
      August 23, 2017

      Continue:

It is one thing to be loyal to a national cause but to ask a nation to kiss the gluteus of humans is disgraceful, and that’s what you are doing Roosevelt!
Adherence means a steady, or faithful attachment: to something. I think people should only be faithful to God; and not the bloody Chines government; If you Roosevelt or any other Dominica leader wish to become a hostage to China, do it on your own; however, not in the name of our people!

I noticed something; you are aging rapidly; let it be known, no amount of money can prevent aiging. No matter how much money we hide in a pillow, in plastic bags buried in the dirt under our house, or in a Bank in Switzerland; or multiple banks all over the world, or in banks in other people’s name when the time comes we leave it all behind.

  11. I believe
    August 23, 2017

Skerrit, here is a scripture that is similar in principle, to the One-China policy you want all national leaders to strictly adhere to: And without faith it is impossible to please him. The man who approaches God must have faith in two things, first that God exists and secondly that it is worth a man’s while to try to find God – Hebrews 11:6 (J.B. Phillips New Testament (PHILLIPS).

Emphasis is on The man who wants to receive from God and what that person Must Believe. Those that don’t want God don’t even have to believe this and truly they can believe what they want. Similarly, the one- China policy is ONLY for those seeking to establish relations with China and ONLY the government can, you can’t force it on anyone. Now China knows ur days are # and it’s just a matter of when the UWP will form the government and hence was their reason for inviting them to China. So don’t sweat Skerrit. China doesn’t need your help because like the old song ” No more love for U again”

I’m sorry but Skerrit is making a fool of himself and his government. How could you as Prime Minister demand strict adherence to One China Policy by all national leaders? Does that make sense? Boss you are the government and you are the Prime Minister of Dominica and as long as you honestly and sincerely abide by the One-China policy, we good.

In fact China does not care or expect any strict adherence to the one China Policy from the opposition or any political leader because they are NOT the government of the day! The One-China policy is the policy that there is only one state called “China.”

As a policy, this means that countries seeking diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC, Mainland China) must break official relations with the Republic of China (ROC, Taiwan) and vice versa.[1][2] -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-China_policy. STOP FOOLING LABORITES

When the opposition becomes government they have a right to accept or reject it though they…

    August 23, 2017

As long as maintaining diplomatic relations with Mainland China is more beneficial than establishing relations with Taiwan, then I agree with the PM. However, if at some point things were to change and it became more beneficial to establish relations with Taiwan, then I say shift to Taiwan. It is the strategic interest of Dominica that must guide this decision not a blind well Labour supports mainland China and UWP Taiwan or vice versa.

In case you have forgotten, if these islands as D/ca did not want independence when they were not yet ready, by far, to be independent, China would not have been helping them today. Those leaders of that time fought for Statehood and Independence from Great Britain when D/ca was not ready for that huge independent step. They did not want Great Britain to rule them. This is what they got. If today some oppose China’s help, keep that in mind. Who else would be there to assist D/ca and the other island/countries?

What do you say of the US and Free Trade between the US and Canada?
The US brought it’s policy to Canada. One of it is part-time work. Canada adopted it. Part-time work means no benefit for those part-time workers.
Those who commenced working part-time had to work for three months before getting the benefit of the federal, provincial and municipal holidays. The government finally put a stop to it that every employee is entitled to be paid for those holidays. Much more could be stated.
Respect China’s policy. China has done much for those countries.
Nationals of those countries must ensure that they complete elementary and secondary school. If it is possible they should attend a college and graduate. After graduating they could seek employment. Once it is obtained, they will hopefully receive a decent salary. Their tax dollars will be helping their nation’s economy and to build up their country.
Those who criticize the government and China, take heed.

Dominica is doomed. These so-called political leaders never miss an opportunity to criticize one another. They don’t seem to be able to get out of campaign mode, they must have learned from Trump.

…. I see China and I see Taiwan two countries, irrespective of what the world says otherwise, unless they join to form one China, I will consider Taiwan separate. Is it written in the law books of Dominica that we must adhere….

I agree with you brother, it is ludicrous for Roosevelt Skerrit to dictate how we should think or act. If I want to call Taiwan buy its old colonial name of Formosa will he get his goons to arrest me? This is a free country and I can still express my opinion as I see fit. I don’t mind working together with China at all but don’t tell me what to say and do. You want me to insist that you must not lie at any time? That man is showing his true face as a dictator now just to try an impress the Chinese but I know they are not buying that at all. They seeing him as trouble and pathetic, trust me.

      The Serenity Prayer

O God, grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change
Courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference.
      Amen!

You will never learn respect and to respect the Prime Minister of Dominica. The PM has done you no harm. Accord him, also, his due rights and dignity as you expect others to do to you.

While I do respect the office of Prime Minister I am frank and tell you that I do not respect the man who occupies that office at present, because in my opinion he has put that office into disrepute.Iit is my right to say so. The office is one thing, its occupant another. You would not expect me to say that I should respect Hitler, Gadaffi or Sadam just because they happened to be leaders of their countries also.
