Prime Minister Skerrit: “I am not afraid. Let the court decide”

PM Skerrit

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says he is pleased with the recent judges’ ruling who threw out election petitions submitted by the United Workers Party (UWP) alleging there was bribery, fraud and denial to the state-owned radio station during the 2009 General Elections.

PM Skerrit is also commending the judicial system for the manner in which the situation was handled.

We believe that the judgment is fair and I must commend him with his decision. We have no difficulty with the ruling. I want to com mend the judicial system with the manner in which they handled the petition,” he said.

PM Skerrit said all the allegations leveled against the Dominica Labour Party were thrown out and the court has indicated that the elections were fair and that the people should accept the decision of the population who votes for the DLP.

“What it has said also is that the leadership of the UWP has misled its voters, supporters and wasted the courts time. I believe the leadership of the UWP should resign because the judge has said to them that they went on a fishing expedition,” he added.

Meantime the issue regarding the legality of PM Skerrit and Peter St Jean’s eligibility for nomination as candidates for electoral office will stand trial at a later date to be announced by the court.

PM Skerrit said “let the court decide”.

“I have no fear. I am prepared to deal with the issues as they area. I am not afraid. Let the court decide,” he said.

@Apres Bon Dieu cest La Ter:

They are not faultless in the eyes of God. God is giving them the opportunity “to place burning coals on their heads”.
The day will come when God will judge them for their domination, oppression, religious and societal, towards His people. They will regret it. They will see how their lives were lived in vain.
It is stated that at the hour of death, everyone is given a view of what they have done on this earth. There will be no fuss. Their conscience will be their signature. This will determine where their souls will end up for all eternity.
Governments of the world will do well to treat those whom they govern and are in authority over as they expect others to treat them, knowing that their time in office is only temporary just as their lives. This also applies to each and everyone of us, the public, the laity.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “What will it profit a man (woman) to gain the whole world and to lose his soul?” It is a serious matter.
As the PM is criticized for having dual citizenship and his non-supporters applaud and spur on the opposition, they must also keep in mind the consequences of their actions. God will hold them accountable for their unloving words and mannerisms.
To those who believe in God and his fairness, He is an impartial God. He rewards the good and punishes the wicked.
They must also keep in mind: “What goes around comes around in time and the manner in which we treat others and measure to them, we will be treated accordingly and two-fold”. This is not being under the control of God but are the teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ who knows our hearts. Those godly virtues are a requirement and condition for living in happiness and peace and obtaining eternal salvation.
St. Paul said: “Teach and remind people of these things.”

    @Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque:

For those who know about the history of Dominica and how it became a British colony, “…In the end, the British paid the French a few francs to get out of Dominica”. In other words, when the British could not succeed I am trying to rack my brains as to the amount of francs, probably 500 francs. I would have to look this up in a pamphlet of Dominica which I have but is not presently within my reach. I do think that the British bribed the French to obtain Dominica.
It is strange that Dominica is situated between two French islands and it was once a British colony.
Throughout the years I have noted the progress of Guadeloupe and Martinique and always maintain to this day that if Dominica was a French Colony, it would have been far better off.
Having stated that, by the way, is China assisting those French islands? Are there Chinese workers in those French islands? Probably not. France has taken good care of Guadeloupe and Martinique and therefore does not need the assistance of China or seek its help.

I would appreciate it if someone would direct me to that section of the law which addresses the issue of dual citizenship as it relates to elected officials.

This whole situation seems strange to me because the only facts that have been made known is that these individuals have passports from two countries. My opinion is that if these individuals have made use of their other passport after entering into public office, then I would understand this petition against them. If the law does state that if the foreign passport is used after a certain age regardless of whether the individual is or isn’t in public office, then I also understand the petition. However, if the significant factor is their participation in public office and not age then veiwing the passports would be enough to identify whether they have been used within the time the individuals have been in public office.

Why is this being made into such a grand affair? What is with the back and forth? Why is our court system so slow?

I just want them to get this thing over with. We have enough to worry about in this country.

wisdom i dont understand yur antipathy towards the French, who was there helping dominca after hurrivane David. Most of us in dominica apart from those jah marigot have French decendants, so why all the french hatred. The Pm is right innocent untill proven guilty. The courts have to investigate and make the decision. He knwes that he is not wrong he has not done anything against the constitution, so he is right to say the constitution cannot prevent him rom being PM. He is within the constitution as he was registered t be French by his mother. The courts will prove that, just how it prove it for Ron Green. Unless the UWP going to change the constitution.
The people chose their leader, so how is he the dictator. The dictators are the Matts, and Linton who no one voted for but they on a campaign to distroy Dominica with thier negative propaganda and jealousy.

    one thing
all dictators are/ were popular..theyfind favor with the minority…. Hu Jintao, Muammar al-Qaddafi, Raul castro (some say Chavez)…../ Idi Amin, Papa Doc, Josef Stalin they supresses and controls the media, clenchs their fist with the religion and are worshiped as result, in the court, they preempt the judgements and are always vindicated.. they press/pressed for totalitarian government, they call themselves SOCIALIST, they are faultless and ultimately compare themselves to the most high becuase they are higher than others and are almost there with the highest … PRIDE PRIDE and More PRIDE ….(HUBRIS syndrome?)
nonetheless, no man not even those that are unsusceptible to law and constitution are immortal..they will be absorbed by history like Fidel Castro, and will fade and ultimately disappear to DUST with their deception, lies, cheat, pride, mislead, hoax and thier solicitators and called to judegement to the ONE we Fear.

we hope then those saying “i am not afraid” will remain true to their resolve, … well unless ofcourse they have prempted their ulmate DESTINY…and this we really FEAR

@Anonymous: Yes man Missy, why not?…Our Medical facilities are in shambles, poorly and under-equipped,not ready for any kind of real serious medical emergency situations. But dem ah build big house.(Lol…Is not a laughin’ matter.Ah vex till mi sick) Are our EMS technicians properly trained to handle emergencies?..Did you hear about that young man from Portsmouth(Glanvilla),who died as a result of drowning, sometime last week,i believe?. It was stated by an eyewitness, that the young man was alive when the so called EMS people came;because he was still breathing. And no CPR administered when they arrived?.They just lifted him up, threw him in the ambulance or whatever, took him to the Portsmouth Hospital ,i was made to understand, that there is where he later died. How would you feel if that was a member of your family?…oooohhh, i see.
Have you ever visited (i mean just pass and take a look), the Hospitals in either Portsmouth, or Marigot lately, to see the deplorable conditions that they are in?even the E.Rs.?..The equipments or lack thereof, are they up to date,or even up to par?..The Beds, the Bathrooms and showers, the Rooms or lack thereof.Medical tools and supplies,or lack thereof ?.Laundry rooms. Meals and its preparations, and the utensils. The overall care, and the conditions of those places?…ehhh?.What are you saying, missy?…Talk to me.
Our Doctors and Nurses and others like nurses assistants, etc.,are they being paid well?.So that they will provide the best care to our citizens when they become sick. right. Are they adequately compensated for their services.
If,GOD forbid, they you get sick, can you honestly tell me that you are confident that you will get the best medical care and service at any one of those facilities?..honestly and confidently?…Nuh,nuh, will you please look at me,…im talking to you?..OH!..If anyone the the Govt.Ministers get sick,or have some serious medical emergencies GOD forbid,..you think they will go to anyone of those facilities?..No i doubt that very much. They will fly out to some other Country to seek medical care.Why?…OHHH….. Can the ordinary Dominican do that? Can he or she afford to go overseas for medical care?…..I see what you mean.
But yet, we have 27million dollars to build state house?..Yes man!…I see what you mean.
And yet again, you are tellin’ me that they care about Dominicans, right?…Yes man. Do they respect the Rights of the People?.Don’t people have a Right to Life?…Ohhh,…. i see what you mean.
And Oh yes…..Dem tell mi bout the type of motorcar that the President of the Country have, or drive inna. Paid for by tax payers dollars.Isn’t it nice…Yea man…..While the ordinary man/woman,or even child,go hungry, or walking bare’footed….Yes man……I see what you mean….

See,sometimes we tend to see things not as they are,but as we are……Have you ever heard of the saying…..where there is smoke, there must be fire?.
Ma’ man,let me tell you something see,..CORRUPTION is Ramptant in your Country, and with this present Govt. Trust me. I AM NOT TELLING YOU WHAT I DON’T KNOW!. Listen, What you don’t know is much older than you, hear?..ok…….
I’ve read where you said to someone, that everyone can clearly see that they are blind, and that they are a secret agent for some Party. But reading your bias rubbish, don’t you believe that the same can be said abou you?,or worse?…So you are telling me,seriously, that there is no Dominican, born in Dominica, that is smart enough, intelligent enough, bright enough, and capable enough to Lead Dominica?.You cannot be serious…….
Now you want to change the CONSTITUTION of a whole Nation,to suit your sick and twisted agenda, right?. Yes, let’s do it because it is beneficial to us,…and our party, our PM…..Well, sorry ma’ man, it just does not work this way.
And,you are talkin’ about “integrity”….Where is the “integrity, when they, themselves are exhibiting “contempt for the ‘supreme Law of the Land…The CONSTITUTION”?.
How can you expect anyone to obey the Law,when you yourself are exhibiting a contempt for the Laws and the Rights of the People?….Can you give me an honest answer,Ron?.
Don’t confuse “subtlety” for “integrity”.Subtlety and arrogance deceive you;integrity never will.

What really, are you scared off?

You need to wake up from your stupor, pal, wake up into the future of realize(realization)…..You need to think pass your “red” shirt and whatever else “red” that is preventing you from thinking rationally. Put all the party politics aside for a little while.Think like a “Dominican”,..and start asking yourself some serious questions. Because right now, check this out…”what you know,is what you don’t know”,and “what you don’t know,is what you know”….dig?.Can you dig that?…Let that be a little food for thought, to you. “The afternoon knows what the morning never expected”.
Tell me what you are conceited about and i will tell you what you lack.
The very sad fact is that,it is very dificult to stop people who are determined to mislead and deceive others by keeping with their authoritative, arrogant character. And will brook no criticism. You people are very, very defensive and very dismissive and abusive of anyone who doesn’t subscribe to your views.Irrespective of how shallow and baseless they might be.
Anyway……….All the best to you……and…Peace profound!!

  28. @wisdom:

” French national policy has always been to exploit, rape and plunder.
They have done it to Haiti, all their colonies and fought and massacred our forefathers to get control of our resources.”(wisdom).

All said in the quote above is subject for debate!

If indeed the French, exploited, raped, and plundered their colonies, how come Martinique approximately twenty-five miles South of Dominica is so vastly developed, and prosperous, in comparisons to Dominica which was once a French colony ?

Why do we see a difference in French Guyana?

Why then is Guadeloupe so developed, in comparisons to even most of the British Commonwealth island nations of the Caribbean?

If the French liked to plunder so much, how come they are not still plundering, and raping Guadeloupe, and Martinique, which are know to the international community, as ” Departments of France,” and not as colonies?

And why are the two islands so developed?

If we research the places where the Colonial French, occupied over the centuries, including Viet Nam, you are compelled to find differences even in the architectural structures in all the places on earth where the British held control.

If you ask me, the British Colonial system, perpetrated on the World was nothing less than a nightmare!

    Have you heard the term?

” The Sun never sets, on the British Empire?” (Winston Churchill).

Those were true words, and the British; are more responsible for any and all massacre you can think of than the French would have, or could have ever committed.

As a matter of fact there is a place in England, now a museum, where they once built and repaired the Slave Ships which was used in transporting our forefathers from the Continent of Africa, to the Americas; North, South, Central America, and the Caribbean.

The shackles that were placed around the necks, hands, and feet of our forefathers, were also fabricated at the same site in England.

You need to remember even in the 1800’s when Black people were not welcome in most countries on this planet, Black People were always welcome in France; written history substantiates that!

As recently as after World War II when blacks who fought in that war helped liberate Europe from the tentacles of Hitler and Nazism, and anti-Semitism; were not welcome in the United States, many found refuge in France.

People such as Josephine Baker, singer, entertainer, and Movie Actor, was welcome in France.

As a result of that she adapted children of different complexion, making a point to the world, that racism was only a condition of the mind; and I’ll let that rest.

And there were cream of the crop of Black American writers who found refuge in France, some are yet alive living in France.

So, to blame the French Colonialists for plundering, and all other ills may not be justifiable!

America, was a colony of the British, so to was India, and all of Africa, and the Middle East, no need to mention they also tried to Dominate parts of Europe also and failed.

The commonality between the countries the British dominated with the exception of the United States of America, and Canada, is that they are all poor.

They were left in poverty by the British.

We need to be careful when we are making statements, that the statments we make are founded!

Prime minister Skerrit has every reason to say that he is not afraid; let the court decide. We must remember that Skerrit is a psycholgy graduate; psychology is the study of human and animal behavior. As a psychology graduate, Skerrit should know how to deal with people, know what to expect from them and also know how to manipulate things to bring about a satisfactory conclusion on his behalf. There is a wild card in Skerrit’s hands called a contingency plan; a what if something happens scenario and how to deal with it. Hypothetically speaking, let us say that the court ruling goes against Skerrit, does anyone in their right frame of mind think it would be the end of him? There is no law that states that he cannot take part in any bi-election as a result. Skerrit would have to renounce the French citizenship and he would be back as a thorn in the heart of the UWP and its cohots. The UWP and its cohots would not have achieved anyhing substantial but more grief. Skerrit has put a lot on the table to just walk away from it all. There is no one in Dominica who can beat him in a bi-election. At the end of the day, when it is all over,Skerrit will be able to pass legislation that will faciitate his position to take Dominca to the next level. The leadership of the UWP and others are not celebrating because they know for sure that Skerrit is not going anywhere. Infact we will notice a bolder, stronger and more charismatic Skerrit. Some of the people who have commented in this forum have not done it from a realistic point of view; infact they are merely using their emotions to convey a message.Anyway you look at it, Prime minister Skerrit is not going anywhere irrespective of the court ruling.

Words of caution : dictators are not always pampered in exile so choosing the safest bolthole is of ought most importance in an uncertain world.Making an apology is also on certain in Dominica today as the community has a new ethos since 1995.It’s long live the king and long live the new king or queen when he she comes around.Pay to play ,party in power PIP is the name of the game.

In 95 Eddie was it blow de horn, then came Roosie, followed by Pierro now Skerro’s next level with his chinese venezuleans Russian now Moracian friends. DNO, so often refuse to print articles for fear of legal action. However, I trust my effort is not in vain for this is the reality in DA today.

@John Brown: So whether or not he is breaking the law, it does not matter to you? So you hold one man in such high esteem, that you dont mind hime trampling on the very constitution that is the fabric on which your country stands…. teach that to your children sir,if you are important enough to a company or entity, you can break it’s laws and rules, because you are important. whew

No man is bigger than the constitution…If you violate it,whether you are President or Prime Minister, you have a price to pay..This is not a case of loving or hating Skerrit, rather it has to do with if the constitution was violated..If the court decides it was violated then Skerrit must suffer the consequencies, especially as he arrogantly said before the elections no law,no constitution can prevent him from breaking the law….IT’S THAT SIMPLE…

MR. SKERRIT NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME.HE FEELS THE LEADERSHIP OF THE UWP SHOULD RESIGN BECAUSE THEY LOST PART OF THE CASE,BUT HE SHOULD STAY IN OFFICE EVEN THOUGH HE HAS TO GO ON TRAIL.WHERE IN THE DEMOCRATIC WORLD THAT A LEADER OF A COUNTRY HAS TO FACE TRIAL FOR CHARGES BROUGHT AGAINST HIM AND HE DOESNT EXCUSE HIMSELF FROM OFFICE UNTIL SUCH TIME THAT THE CASE IS RESOLVED.

People Skerrit is human!!! many of you are in foreign lands and know fully well that when elected officials stray they are held accountable and you all welcome that, why do you want to make Dominica the island you all claim to love an exception all of a sudden?

Skerrit is not an exception, he is just a MAN who goes through the same phases of life like everyone of us. He can make mistakes too, you all are screaming GOD GOD, but didn’t the same bible say …”THOU SHALT HAVE NO OTHER GOD BESIDES ME..?”. Quit making this man out to be more than he is, he ran an election, he won! He was elected by the hands of man. A couple years ago he was just a teacher, how all of a sudden he is some GOD or Superhuman appointed by GOD? this is blasphemy and the pinnacle of ignorance.. you all need to stop with that and stick with the facts.

If he violated the CONSTITUTION by which the country is governed he has to account for it, just as every single other national should. He likes to pre-empt things by running to the media claiming ..in the following days you will hear ..” and then when the story breaks, some of you run with this jealous of him, hate him nonesense. If Skerrit didn’t open his big mouth and claim to be a French citizen his petition would have been thrown out too like the others, he told a blatant lie hoping it would be washed out over with political noise of the day, instead it came back to bite him.

There is no need for an anti-Skerrit crusade, he is a natural born Dominican, the courts will decide at what time he became a French national and the matter will be set to rest. I am amazed how even so called christians are so INFATUATED with a mortal man, that they will put ignorance before knowledge. This man is not above the laws of the Commonwealth of Dominica, he knows it, and when he forgets he ought to be reminded. He is our PM and was elected by the people, he should carry on with the affairs of the country, but Skerrit is not DOMINICA, the last time I checked Dominica was an island in the Eastern Caribbean made up of people of African and kalinago descent. When the time comes for another leader to rise up, Dominica will be there long after Skerrit and all her sons and daughters who stood up to serve her.

Wrong is wrong, laws are laws. We need to stop with this nonesense at this point in our development, personalising every issue. Roosevelt Skerrit is JUST A MAN.. he is no JESUS, he is no Superhuman, He is nothing extraordinary.. just a man and the DULY ELECTED LEADER of the island. We ought to show respect to the office he holds, but likewise he owes every single Dominican the same. It is OK to tell him when he strays too far from the norms that govern a stable society, we don’t need to slander and demoralise him, but it’s ok to call a spade a spade, by so doing we will help him be a better and stronger leader.

One US president said:” All we have to fear is fear itself.” Our Opposition prior to when it was & in Gov’t told us:” Fear no more.” Then our fear level indicated a big swing on the fear barometer leading to the rejection of the UWP in 2000 while it was awaiting Sunrise in the east. Now our commander in chief/commander in corruption tells us:” I am not afraid.” Mr. R” D Skerrit did any one say before you were? Then why this statement? As a guy who ,allegedly sat in psychology classes ( I do not think any of it sank in) such a response speaks volumes. Roosevelt boy! Do yourself a favour before you make PJ Noreiga, etc look like toys.Your generation suppose to be brighter they say but it only confirms that it’s a lazy one wanting everything and now without puting in an oz of work.

The constitution regarding this will have to change because there are hardly Dominicans in Dominica right now, I mean we would have a Haitian , Venezuelan, Santo Domingo born prime minister in the future.

What about all those Dominican people who had children born in the USA , French territories, Canada and Antigua?

The majority of those children in my village were born in Guadeloupe, it’s going to be problem to hold high office in Dominica in the future.

You call yourself LAW but, you’re too biased and that biasness comes from grudge and jealousy towards a young Prime Minister who is willing to learn from the expertise of old men who keep tearing him down just because they’re ashamed that his party won the elections fair and square.

Give the man his respect, I’ve never heard a DLP Supporter disrespect a UWP representative the way you guys disrespect a young man who is trying to make a change. You guys are still living in elections stage. Tell us what can UWP do to make things better? They choose to poison the minds of people and cause a great divide.

Mr. Skerrit has the support and love of the marjority of Dominicans and that’s undeniable. people that are apposed to him seem to do it out of a deep seated hatred for him and not just Political differences of opinion.

This is very sad because hate is not healthy and it takes up alot of time and energy, If the PM displeases you that’s ok but do not turn these feelings into hate. Recognize that you may hate an action of someone but not the person. there is a difference between not caring for a person and not caring about the action the person .

Hate in a person can really take over the subconscious as well as the conscious and make you sick. It stops you from breathing normally, your whole body tightens up, your face muscles tightens up,then you stop smiling and their is always a snarl expression on your face.

This is because all you are doing is thinking about the hate and nothing else. Don’t let hate stand in your way of living a potentially healthy and great life, remember hate is not health.Soon you will find yourself lonely because people will get tired of you, get turn off by your negative energy and not want to be around you anymore.

Here is another casualty talking from the posterior.

Is the UWP being “Out smarted and moved” through honest means? Or is crookedness, bribes and corruption the secret portion to the DLP’s temporary “success”?

In what capacity are you suggesting the UWP has no evidence for the other petitions?

Are you aware that there was no need to present evidence at this stage of the proceedings?

Are you aware that evidence is presented during the trial?

So why then is the matter with respect to Skerrit going to trial in order for the evidence to be
    presented?

Was evidence presented for the Skerrit matter in order for the judge the rule that it goes to trial?

If yes, then why is he still seating in the chair?

Why don’t you put on your thinking cap and make good use your brain?

In what capacity are you making this FALSE STATEMENT that none of the overseas voters were
    objected?

You need to keep listening to the different radio stations in the coming weeks.

Ask yourself why is it that the DLP now sees it fit to re-start their election program on Kairi FM called “next level” with hosts Charles Savarin and Tony Astaphan.

I am no party supporter, but I believe this guy has done and is doing a lot of good things for Dominica. Maybe more than most of our ex-PM’s combined.

There should be no civil unrest and all that. The law is the law, if the guy does not qualify to be Prime Minister, then so be it. He have to fix what he have to fix and wheeel and come again or something if he so chooses.

As the leader of the country he has to set the example of following the law. This is nothing to become divisive about, the courts will decide and we have to abide by its decision…is all.

Its just a pity that the other political leaders seem incapable of matching Skerrit with the vision of developing this country and getting him out by the polls, but instead is sitting on the sidelines with savoring tongues waiting on the courts to take him down for them.

This is not about dual citizenship!! This is about trying to remove by any means necessary a very, very popular and unbeatable Prime Minister who is the backbone of his party. The UWP thinks the Labour Party is more easily beaten without Skerrit, so they want to cut off the head and hope the body will die.

The support Mr. Skerrit has from the marjority of Dominicans is undeniable. The love this man gets is unrivaled. He is one of the main reason why the UWP can’t get back in power. He is the stone in their shoe, so what do you do when you have a stone in your shoe? you remove it any way you can.

That’s what this is all about, let’s not be fooled!! The UWP want the Labour Party to implode like the Freedom Party did when Ms.Charles left. They want to duplicate what happened to the Freedom party, then they alone will be left standing.

The Judge needs to be commended for his judgement on the elections petitions. of course the 12/09 general elections activities like all other general elections in Dominica were ‘fair and free.”

On the issue of the PM’s and Hon St Jean eligibility to hold electoral offices in government,, the Judge again ruled in the best interest of all Dominicans. The Laws of our Constituion needs to be uphold. Letting the matter go to trial demonstrates respect for the Constitution and all Dominicans. Secondly, it will help clarify some of the misconceptions that unfortunately, so many Dominicans ( the politicians included- UWP, DFP, DLP members included)have about the content of Constitution. I pray that both the government, opposition parties, civil rights groups are engage in educational actitivies that assist Dominicans in understanding our Laws.

Honorable Prime Minister I must commend you too for the manner in which you deal with the circumstances of these allegations . You behavior with dignity – as my fellow Dominicans would say locally, You do have ‘ class.’ You have always retorted, ” let the courts decide” Your accusers have taken the matter to court, ‘let the court decide.

PM Skerritt is dealing with this issue as though it is of no consequence to him, “I have no fear. I am prepared to deal with the issues as they area. I am not afraid. Let the court decide,” he said.” This is the head of the government and he has nothing to say to the Dominican people. Is he aware of concern that this issue is causing the people of Dominica. His answer just prove that this man is only looking out for himself. All he could say on the matter is that “I am not afraid” that statement is so JUVENILE!.

Whoever is advising the PM should take some training in Public Relations. How could his advisors let him come out and speak and disrespect the Dominican people in this manner. How can the PM not address the people in his statement. He could take the time to talk about the opposition but he did not show the people that he is concerned about the impact this issue is having on the people.
