PUBLIC UPSET… after Savarin tells Dominicans to boycott Jerry Brisbane’s business

Minister responsible for National Security Charles Savarin is under heavy criticism after making some controversial statements on a radio talk show recently.

On a radio program hosted by Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphans with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit joining in via the telephone, Savarin called on Dominicans to “boycott” Jerry Brisbane’s business, Brizees Mart.

The minister’s comments came in response to Brisbane’s publication of two letters he (Brisbane) sent to donor countries and organisations raising concern over what he said was government’s decision to take a $27 million loan to build an “unnecessary” new luxury State House during times of financial crisis. Another of these letters spoke against “poor tendering practices” by the government on important infrastructural projects.

Brisbane’s letters were first published in response to a previous statement from the prime minister who had accused some Dominicans of writing to donor countries asking them to stop providing funds for developmental projects around the country.

Brisbane had sought to clear his name by posting the two letters. The businessman stated that none of the letters stated that donor countries should withdraw monetary assistance from Dominica.

However, Savarin told Dominicans over the airwaves not to use their hard-earned salaries to support Brisbane’s business.

“When the EU gives budgetary assistance it pays civil servants. So no civil servant can take the European Union money that is paid to government as budgetary assistance and go and bring it for Jerry Brisbane at Brizees Mart. They cannot do that. Nobody working on a Chinese-funded project can take their wages and their salaries and go and bring it for Jerry Brisbane at Brizees Mart… whether it is at Petro Caribe…west coast on the Soufriere road [or] anywhere else…” he stated.

“And I believe that the people of Dominica must understand and do not respond. Here he is standing against those who are seeking to help us to develop this country. The people individually and collectively have to respond by boycotting OD Brisbane and Sons. That is my firm recommendation…” Savarin said.

He added: “I am firmly of the view that, I mean personally, nobody from my house will go to Brizees Mart and do any purchases even if the goods required are to be found only in Brizees Mart. That is a firm position where my household is concerned and that is my recommendation to the rest of Dominica.”

Members of the public have been demanding an apology and or calling for his resignation.

“Bathing and sleeping in money” you say. Have you met the Minister’s family to make such a statement? I bet not. You must be a child, and immature individual, or some psychic accountant to make such statements. What money the man and his family has, was through their sweat and blood after YEARS of working for his country, the same country that is now criticizing him for even having an opinion over issues that can affect his countrymen on a whole.

Let me get this correct, when the goverment takes in a loan for $27 million i guess a lot of people may think it’s only a fix amount, but what about the interest rate on the loan? What people have to understand the same principal you go though with the credit unions or bank in dominica it’s the same way the goverment has to do and allso guarantee the loan. How much will it be t the end that we as dominicans have to pay in taxes? It’s easy for a primeminister to come to the nation and say that i will build this and that but at what cost to us and our children, and even when he leaves office do you think he leaves with the debts he brought in NO it’s on the books to be paid.

My name is TED Lewis Snr Economist at the Ministry of Finance Headquaters ,Antigua and Barbuda( born and raise in lagoon ,portsmouth). I challenge you to prove to me that Dominica has loaned or grant Antigua any monies.
You need to get your facts straight and stop misleeding the public. Allthough antigua is going through its fiscal challeges it still provides more than 4000 jobs to Dominicans like my self . Moreover antigua GDP is 3billion where as Domonica Gdp is not even 2 Billion . In others words even when the United States was experiencing negative growth ,its living standards was still higher than most if not all contries that were experiencing positive growth. Thats because their per capita income ( GDP/ Pop) is still high. Dominica is still listed as a low income country and is a middle income country. let me see you spin this.

Why is it good for donor agencies to band DA and Dominicanians cannot band, boycot brisbans?
Why Brisbane has problems with everything which is good? Does he see on one side of his face?
Who was the first business man to condem Save A Lot? Brisbane, I heard it myself can he retrack that statement too? We must always call a spade a spade.Call a fish a fish and stop trying to change names as if people cannot see through their own disgruntled agenda. What did brisbane asked of the government and did not get it? Tell us too. Brisbane sounds like the taste of a sour lime, imagine Lime. What brisbane cannot accept ,elections came and he hoped his party won and the slapping results brought anger to him. Tell him check his business which needs the negative energy, go treat his staff right, review their salary and pay them the overtime he refuse to pay. they have families too. Brisbane can give and he expects to get .BRISBANE STOP THE CRYING–YOUR ANIMALS WILL HELP YOU TO STOP IT WHERE YOU NOW LIVE.

Now i honestly believe some people come on this website to bash a party that is taking us out of the rabbit hole. You cannot tell me you guys are blasting Savrin and the Pm for someone telling another country not to help us Dominicans. I am not labor, freedom or Uwp i just don’t understand why you guys are blasting the man for HIS comments. I have been out of Dominica for 21 yrs but comes back to see my dad 3 times a yr but i pray that nothing happens to him because i will refuse to spend my hard earn money in DA after some of the comments i read. Money don’t stay in one person hands, so to write a letter to another country to tell them don’t help makes no sense and just make us as people look like idiots. The us is in debt of over a trillion dollars but you think Bill Gates would write to China and say cut off all funds to America? No they would not because the money ends up in the citizens hands and then they spend it on his products. SO WHEN SAVRIN SAY TO BOYCUT BRISBANE HE IS 1000% CORRECT TO DO SO AS A MEMBER OF OUR CABINET. Most of the boycutting in other develop countries starts with politicians, so Dominicans you need to wake up this is 2010 not 1960. Friends help friends and if Brisbane was yours he would have asked for help for you. NOT a fan of Skerrit or savrin but i love Dominica even if i was raised in New york. My people make me want to come back.

We are free to agree or disagree. Freedom of choice.

I have on numerous occasions shopped at B-Marts, they sell goods that cannot be purchased

In my opinion the said letters should never have been written, but a boycott would hurt the workers
    at B-Marts more.

    @Karkabeff:

U all to quick to demonstrate and lock down!!! No need for the hostility… One man was merely stating his opinion on a matter which involved a letter which had a particular business’ letterhead and logo. I often wonder if politicians are not entitled to an opinion. They are human beings too you know! Its okay for Brisbane to use Brizee’s Mart letterhead/logo to write a letter to international institutions asking them to stop financial aid and its wrong for Charles Saverin to give his opinion and say he would boycott d business? Charles Saverin cannot make people not go there. He did not hold a gun to anyone’s head. He ws simply stating how he felt and saying what he felt he would do. I will still continue to shop there. But dat doesn’t mean I think Brisbane is any less of a fool.for carrying out such a STUPID move!

    November 17, 2010

@Patat: PATAT I applaud your attempt at impartiality however you seem indicate that two wrongs make things right. What good it is to focus on acts of victimization that occurred 5,10 or 30 years ago. In our attempt to become a nation we can’t keep dwelling on the past. I am by no means implying that the past is totally irrelevant. In evaluating Saverin’s statement we should , as a developing nation focus on the true implications. We cannot overlook the fact that such statement coming from the minister responsible for labor is truly offensive , destructive and at the very least vindictive.

Are we becoming a rogue state; The people in government can do or say whatever and the people should remain silent. We will all agree that our basic rights are being threatened. Mr Brisbane has the right to make an honest leaving and no one should attempt to deny this fundamental right. Brisbane like many others may have his own political agenda but then again Brisbane is entitled to his opinion.

Patat if we must focus on the events of the past then a huge question mark tattooed on Charles Saverin’s forehead is in order. One would think that Charles would learn from the past. In fact the very same behavior that Charlo fought against in 1978 is the very same behavior that he condones in 2010.

  34. Lively Debate
    November 17, 2010

DNO, first I want to thank you for allowing Dominicans abroad and at home to voice their concerns. While this is my second entry, one thing that dawned on me is how Mr. Savarin for whatever his intent lack the poise and tact for someone when speaking gives the impression like he is thinking of what he says did not realize the outburst this can cause and will cause. Whether or not the more objective minded Dominicans will follow his lead and do what he ask is something that can only be measure based on a survey; therefore I would like to know whether that is something DNO will pursue by polling the general public to find and illustrate to leaders and populace how their words have consequences, and can lead to further decay of the society we live in. I am of the view also that party members are going to dig their heels in and become pocupines (care only about thier interest), and shop where their interest lies. I say this because my Grandmother God rest her soul experienced this when people from the village I’m from realized that she voted Freedom and given we lived in a predominantly labour strong hold constituency a lot of labourites did not buy her bread. I was old enough to see this for myself because before the election these people bought bread from her and after they stay away. Dominicans we live in a country that most of us have experienced what I described be it at your jobs or place of business, and we need to move past this backward behavior. I am of the openion that the present leadership in ALL Dominica political parties need to be made accountable ala the Tea Party in America had candidates sign a pledge of things they want to see get done; while this may have it’s bias in terms of what they are requesting the thing that inspired me is that they had a say in the political process. People these men/women who ask us to vote for them are not Gods, and as such we need to let them know what we expect of them especially now with technology members of parliament reflect what kind of Country we live in; our action can result to either attracting investments or not just look at how Venezuela is quickly becoming into a country that foreign investors are avoiding because of the strong lack of independence business face in that country. Also, they are going to implement what they think suits their political career; what is wrong with village councils mobilizing the people in each constituency to come up with a “To Do List” and present it with a letter of co-sponsors be it Labourite or freedom because despite who we support the problems in our communities does not have a colour code (relating to a party) so we need to learn to work together. Today’s divide and conquer agenda is not working, Dominicans will achieve a lot more when we live our affiliations at the door. We need to move Dominica back into the Agro-processing era by coming up with a really good plan; the thing is there are pieces of good/great ideas on every side, but the “ego that our body cannot cash” if I may borrow a line from the movie “Top Gun” is avoiding us from meeting together despite party to make this work. I feel really sorry for the people who want to work and are starving for leadership in a country with an emphasis on having a university educated child in every home. Therefore, what use will all these educated individuals be to a country with leaders who cannot amalgamate all these talents. This is why this is such a poor state of affairs, and it is incumbant on everyone to bring Dominica leadership to that level.

    @ Chew My Pocket…Teresa
Savarin, is that you, your sister, wife or some ridiculously blinded supporter of yours. When a man is wrong you don’t point to the wrongs that others may have or might not have done to justify that man’s wrong. We understand the idea of crossing the lines, even UWP supporters, what the hell does that have to do with that careless, responsible and catering tone that Savarin choose to display in the capacity in which he did, especially with the current head man in charge. Everyone across the borders is irritated with this ignorant chastiser’s method of diplomacy or lack thereof.
“The majority of comments here are from UWP disgruntled and unhappy supporters,” and you are as convincing to us (Labourites) as is Lennox to the rest of the Dominicans (Workers/Freedomrites). And who are you???? You work for DNO with unfettered access to privilege personal information? You’re such an untimely person that you are quite convinced that there is NO issue that the majority of Dominicans can agree on. There are qualified contributors in all party groups that agree on important issues concerning the well been and security of Dominica.
You’re not convincing anyone that the majority of Dominicans are in love with the Honorable PM. We mostly show appreciation for the better prepared groups of individuals during election campaigns. That’s what reasonable people do. It does not, however, make us lovers of the individual(s) we hire to serve. I hope you see the irony in that…IN LOVE WITH MY EMPLOYER. May be you’re one of his girlfriends.

And for the record I also find his comments overzealous, distasteful and childish

    My Opinion:
When you choose to enter into the political arena, you must be prepared for what comes down the line, be it PM/Minister/Businessman.

Do you expect to level corruption claims against the Government and Prime Minister and offer no proof of such and escape unscathed? No Siree Bob…they must Calesh that marble!
Furthermore, you are asking Donor Countries/Agencies to withhold their donations-loans-grants from Dominica based on your letter-knowing full well the country and by extension its citizens depends on these monies.

By doing this you are trying to hurt the country.

Do you expect the members of the Government to sit idly by and allow you to simply continue along as if nothing happened?

HE WHO HAS THE CHEESE MAKES THE RULES

I say strike him hard and often. Hit him where it hurts, his pockets.

UWP & DFP supporters have an extremely short memory. If you want to talk about political victimization we would be here for days.

I remember Edison James asking St. Mary’s Academy Principal to fire a teacher who put on a play in his classroom where one of the characters was named Eddie. Mr. James felt it was an attack on him…a play in a high school mind you. Do you remember that or have you simply forgotten that?
Amnesia hitting all you like dengue fever…..but instead of taking some medicine all you running outside without shirt in de rain…..

Clean house, restructure or the party will go into foreclosure. People leave political parties all the time….but it seems the defections have not eased and I have not seen a Labour guy go Across yet…..the writings on the wall.

Where is the Leader of Opposition? – He Not talking….not his turn yet! They speak in turns you know!

The majority of comments here are from disgruntled/unhappy UWP supporters who hang unto every word from Lennox Linton on any given Saturday afternoon.

Before the elections he was on fire and after the elections he is like a Boocah.

Think about it, Lennox offers up no skin, does not contest elections, yet attacks the Prime Minister relentlessly. He has nothing to lose, and the PM would be wasting his time to do anything with this guy. Dominicans like LOVE their PM and they will NEVER vote for Edison James or put his party in power again. I am as convincing to you as is Lennox to the rest of Dominicans.

Thank you for the information. Yours is the only one that I stopped to read thoroughly. You really help me to learn one two things that I have missed, not living in Dominica. And I believe that your information is the truth, because your comment is in the well-loved category and no one disagreed with you. I will continue to look for those informative comments. Thank you again.

And one more thing, I do not know very much about those different political parties and ministers of Government in Dominica. But I agree with you, the Prime Minister sound like a man of wisdom and authority; and Mr Savarin sounds like a man with a character that is gradually destroying his own post as a minister of Government. He does not have to get fired or resign for that to happen. He will just end up with no credibility to win his political riding during election time.

    @VALDA BRUNO DURAND:

Valda as a former student of the Isaiah Thomas secondary I am very surprised by your insensitivity to suggest that “Charlo is a wonderful man, leave him alone” as if to suggest that he is so wonderful that he can’t err. As a member of the Dominica Labour Party and a personal friend of Charlo I too was every upset by his statement. I felt that he had stooped low and diagnosed him as “losing control” of his faculties and by extension himself for a man of his calibre to have allowed himself to be brought down in this way by his outlandish comments. My God! how could Charlo, a former trade unionist, a minister for Labour and with responsibility for national security compromise himself/country in this way. He ‘s promoting, victimization openly, promoting; unemployment, family breakdown, promiscuity, homelessness, poverty, segregation and criminal activity in this country. When you are calling for a boycott of a company that contributes to the economy in many facets, you are “cutting your nose to smite your face my friend”… It says alot for his love for people and by extension this country and his comment has far reaching implications. I am calling on my distinguished members of parliament more particularly on the Gov’t side to categorically distance themselves from this madness by Charlo and call for a complete and total retraction of this highly offensive uterance by a SENIOR MINISTER OF GOVERNMENT and an apology to the GOVERNMENT and PEOPLE of DOMINICA.

I am losing sleep over this and wonder what could have possessed my dear friend to be so “hateful”, “vengeful” and “spiteful”. I understand you have just cause to be upset with Jerry but what you have done is hurt your country and your own self.

History SHALL find it hard to forgive you for these rather unsavory remarks whilst serving the people in such a high office. Charlo, refocus and set yourself to doing the people’s business and stop working against the country my friend.

I am saying here and I shall tell you at the soonest opportunity that what you said was wrong and in VERY poor taste, and from this time forward NO one seriously listens to you anymore in this country, your behaviour was indeed mischievous!

I for one will boycott Brisbane! Charles Savarin, you have my support, Dominicans too damn ignorant, Pierre Charles was right, they wear their ignorance like a badge of honour. Damn ass! Dominicans sickening my mother a** now man!

Jerry just dere oppressing his workers, he needs someone to sue his a** for the way he exploits his workers. This is what Jerry needs to check! He looking like a polar bear already!

On a serious note, Jerry is behaving like the negroes who sold out the black neg mawon to the whites. Jerry is attempting to sabotage the benefits and grants of the people of Dominica from foreign aid. He is jealous, if he accomplish his objective then, Dominicans will get no foreign aid, government cannot do projects then DLP will be out of power. This is what he wants! Dominicans Brisbane has all his money in his two boar-dar you know! He doesn’t care a rats a** about you!

    November 16, 2010

People in my circle are still talking about our PM and how he handled himself at the meeting for the DOMINICANS from the diaspora how attitude and behaviour for a Prime Minister was un-becoming now we have Charles Savarin ( security minister ) what is going on with those politians in Dominica I firmly believe they do not have the best interest of the people at the forefront its all about their our agenda and people must come to understand that you dont need someone to keep telling you every day that they speek on your behalf when it haven got much to do with you, Savain is a deadbeet politican the PM is using him wisely because he will bury himself for his rope is getting shorter.
People of DOMINICA Savarin did not run during the election he was handed a job on a plater by the PM how many of you that run and helped out the party got a job he was always a lazy man just look at how he fights with himself when he is speaking, Savarin on his own cannot do anything for Dominica no matter how stupid he sound he need the PM and the PM need him to blow his horns because he cannot see thru those thick out of date glasses he wears.
For a minister to ask the public to boycott a public business is nonsensical O D Breisbane & Sons have been around in D’ica for a many years so if you ask questions of the PM or his party you against the establishment therefore you should be stone of kill is that what we are coming too in DOMINICA by the likes of Tony,Savarin, and the PM himself, I do believe the people of DOMINICA should press on and ask for his resignation because we have a right to ask questions of our politicans, does Savarin feel we should just say yes Mr.PM go a head build the $27k palace when our young people have nothing to do or should we wait for the Island to come as others in the region before we do something we need action now not later and this Govt have turned their backs on them .
I ‘m appealing to all the young people in Dominica when next election comes around make this Govt pay for how they treat you if they offer you money take it and still vote them out of power becasue you will have the power to form the next Govt start seeking out men / women who you believe have your interest at heart and not folks who just carve power.
I am telling you up front dont seek out Lennox, Matt, Angelo we need them right where they are so they can continue to bring us the informations we need to help shape and make up our minds we as DOMINICANS need to take back our ISland from those grave digging politicans, every day my trust in the PM goes further and further away.

I am going to be balanced in my commentary on this article.

I am enjoying the comments written on these comments by Charles Savarin.

For one thing, we in Dominica have short memories.

Somewhere in 1982 there was a Drum News Paper that surfaced in Dominica and Hammed, the Editor, was very critical of Dame Eugenia and her Administration. Many of the Freedom Supporters were annoyed with Hammed.

At a public meeting in Roseau, Lagoon to be exact, Miss Charles said these words: ” My dear ladies and gentlemen, if you do not like what Hammed is writing in his newspaper simply do not buy his newspapers and do not place advertisements in his newspaper”

There were few dissenting voices about Mamo’s comments!!!!

The drum Newspaper folded in record time. It did not last a year!!!

The very same thing was attempted on Kairi FM when Mr. Bellot became a member of the UWP and went as far to contest for the UWP in Grand Bay after the death of PM, Pierre Charles

Mr. Brisbane use to have a Radio Program on Kari FM between 2001 to 2004 and he moved to another radio station – effectively boycotting Kairi FM. What were his motives at the time? Which political party was he sympathetic towards then? You be the judge.
It is widely reported that political leaders become dictators because their close associates with a thirst for power, prestige, position, and fame advise them wrongly and make them loose fear of the masses reactions and make them loose the fear of accountability to the masses and replace it with the masses fearing their political leaders!!!!!! That is how dictators emerge people. Skerrit was smart to react by stating that he is listening!!!
And that comment was well played. If the masses play dead to the comments of Savarin he many smile quietly ; if the masses ask for his resignation and that can ensure another two thousand UWP and DFP supporters coming over to the DLP , Savarin will be sacrificed!!! That is just how the game of politics is played. Skerrit will never fire Savarin. Savarin will fire himself and his on his way doing just that.

This call is nothing new but I will say it is dirty all the same. Savarin is calling on the Public Service and public servants to show preference to other businesses places. Well if one can remember Christmas 2001 and 2002 they showed Jerry’s company who was boss. They opened their own shopping facilities. And that was as a result of comments the very same businessman made about the public servants then. But the PSU Supermarket is going down slowly and will die or transform into a canteen for PSU members where one may see a few vending machines at best.

Many persons have been victimized by these dirty political moves

In the 1980s many Laborites were victimized by the DFP lead government – Karam could hardly sell a pickup to any government department. It was problems for Orchard to provide Catering services; most went to “Kaywees” which folded soon after Freedom Party was out of Government for whatever reason.

Jeff Scotland lost his job due to political victimization under the UWP. Mr. Didier paid a price as well.

Doreen Paul lost her job at Dominica’s Bank under the DFP which caused Lambert Lewis to lose his job as Manager under UWP that caused Julius Corbette to lose his job in that Bank as well when Labor came in power 2000.
The thing that surprises me though is the way the masses have eaten on this topic as if all else is secondary!!! And that is exactly what Savarin and the gang have been praying for well over 10 months now!!!

Savarin is no pushover politician. I expect many interest groups to call for his resignation including the DFP, Citizens Forum for Good Governance, the UWP, the PSU, a few Businessmen with deep pockets, the Diaspora Organisation or its vocal members. The truth is no one will strike and no one will close down the Country. We will hear cries for political supporters to support this business place for Christmas but Dominicans on a whole love a SALE and shop where the price is right. The only backlash in all of this is Public Servants may get paid late in December and have a bad Christmas.

  72. UPTOWN REBEL!!!
    November 16, 2010

There is a big difference between being “upset”,and being “outrage”….That comment by Charles Savarin, was not only outrageous, but was very, very irresponsible, and downright despicable..All Dominicans should be outraged by it…..
No way should a member of Govt. make such a despicable, and quite frankly dangerous statement like that, against a Citizen and his establishment, and be allowed to stay in office,or keep his job.

But the again, we have to go back to the statement made by the PM,in regards to the letters written by J.B.
What the PM said was somewhat misleading, and misrepresented that contents of those letters. The letters never indicated anything about “don’t give financial aid to Dominica”.That was not the true content of those letters;they were published for all to see,and read….But the PM put a political twist to what the true intentions of those letters were, and what they stated, to suit his and his party’s own agenda, and to undermine and belittle J.B…..That in itself was irresponsible, because it was misleading.
It can either work, or it can backfire…We will have to wait and see…..Did People swallowed the propaganda, without looking at the facts?.Did they make a rational assessment based upon the facts? Or did they just take the PM’s word for it?….

Charles Savarin,is not an elected member of Govt. He was not elected,he was appointed by the Labor Party or the PM……You know whats funny at this whole charade, and to the point of becoming a fiasco?…Charles is not even a “true” Laborite….
He should be fired…Period….and Dominican should demand that he be fired,or at the very least, his immediate resign… The PM must show some form of leadership, and do nothing less…Listen to the voices of the People.

Members of Govt. are not Cowboys in the Wild West…They cannot just do what they like, say what the want, and act in any irresponsible and despicable way, without consequences…We are in a Democracy, and they are accountable to the People, and obligated to them as well….They must be held as such……………..They must be held accountable…..Period!………FIRE HIM!!!!!

    Anyway,…all the best to all…..and..
    Profound Peace!!

So – i view on this from another stand point – i believe that this may be a Dominican trait where – persons just run their mouths without thinking or recognising the implications of their statements. It is a trait i see through out the comments on DNO, where the publlic just goes on and makes ridiculous, frivilous and unsupported statements.

Just maybe, the politicians are a reflection of the Dominican peopleand the way they think.

So in the end – to condemn him for being and acting DOMINICAN is hypocrisy to the highest extreme.

I’m hoping that this comment will act as a wake up call for many of those who sit behind their computers and constantly make comments which are ridiculous and uncalled. Remember the world is watching and what you do and say – reflects not only on your but the people of Dominica.

And – although i do not agree with what Mr Brisbane did – kinda like treason- in my mind, i absolutely detest the abuse of power of Mr Savarin….two worngs do not make a right – and it’s time that Dominicans start acting like reasonable people who realise that actions have consequences.

I see that many people agree with Mr Brisbane’s letters- but i believe that instead of show casing the Government in such a light – he shoul dhave advised on the plight of the people and suggest ways in which the money should be used. Be littling or showing disrespect of your leaders in such a bold / blatant manner leaves a very negative impression.

No matter what the situation – Dominica is in need of development … and if Dominica wants to survive – since there is a cry of no jobs, no money – risks need to be taken. I definitely do not think we need a 27 million state home – but we need to fix up Dominica and make it tourist friendly.

Bananas can’t save Dominica any more, so we have to think big and try to lure the tourist which are spending the $ in the other islands. Offer them something, and in the effort of creating that something – jobs must come about….

until then – stop betraying the country and blaming Skeritt when instead of progressing they are bringing down the country.

It is a shame when persons who hold fiduciary duties breach their positions of trust. A Minister of Labour asking the public to boycott a local business because of personal strife? This is unheard of. That’s a major lapse in judgment and i think said minister should apologise not only to the public but also to the business.

Mr Savarin is not just any mInister, he is the minister of labour – and as such – he should have a greater understanding of the implications of his words. He should know that the public will hold him to a higher standard than the ordinary man.

Less sales would eventually lead to persons being laid off or fired for lack of resources to pay salaries. Come on – Mr Savarin – SHAME ON YOU…. and it’s a damn shame that the people of Dominica have to call on you to apologise. Your personal views should not cloud your responsibility to the people of Dominica.

It’s time the people who are in power recognise their fiduciary duties to the people of Dominica and stop making asses of themselves; which reflects badly on the Dominican population.

Woow that is sick. While I find Jerry’s letters to be distasteful I find it atrocious that a government minister would call for the boycotting of any business place only because the business owner expresses his political views. Saverin with your own selfish motives do you recognize that Mr Brisbane’s Business has sustainably supported Dominica’s economy for as long as many of us can remember. Boycotting Brisbane could also mean jeopardizing /eliminating many jobs that include port workers, delivery workers, store managers, food court workers the list goes on. Saverin is obviously mouthing off for his dinner and would say anything to gain the trust of the people in cabinet.
As a kid I idolized Charles Saverin however age and reasoning has shown me that Charles is nothing but a political leach or rather a political soukoyan. In retrospect I now understand what exactly Mike and Rosie were preaching about Saverin back in the 80’s.
True – Story. After Hurricane David we were receiving ration and aid from foreign donors and the very same Charles Saverin was involved in the management and distribution of the ration (1981) .There was a tug and a couple of Lighters ( barges ) from Portsmouth waiting on supplies for the Portsmouth area at the Deep water harbor. Charles publically refused to load the lighter just because Portsmouth people did not vote for him in the general election. That is not hear say I traveled all the way to Roseau on these lighters and was at the port waiting on the mercy of Charles Saverin. I will never forget this day. The fact is Portsmouth knew that this man is nothing but a crab he would come to Portsmouth and not say hello to people; never connected with Portsmouth people and then he wanted us to vote for him like we owed him. Today I hear some of the very same Porsssie people praising Charles just because he is hiding behind a shoe and red flag. That makes me sick.
Charles is known for making outrageous statements- After the 1980 election Charles publically referred to Portsmouth people as “ Black Caribs”- A term that is insulting to both Carib people and the peole of African descent. I am however not surprise that he made such statement about Brisbane. Charles Saverin is just a bitter / sour loser.

Any free and transparent gov’t would have nothing to worry about Mr. Brisbane. In fact i see nothing wrong with Jerry’s letter- is there? All he is asking is that the gov’t be more responsible with monies donated- how would that end up reducing the amount of money donated…. unless if the donor countries find truth in what Mr. Brisbane says and then its the GOV’T at fault. so people talking about treason get real. no trade secrets were sold, no harm done.

on Charles Savarin saying a comment like that just shows the state our politics is still in. Our leaders pretend to act mature yet they say these destructive and negative comments which INFACT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED TREASON. If Mr. Brisbane’s company falls its not Jerry alone will suffer. He has employees and their families, customs will take a hit and also the the gov’t from less taxable incomes.
The fact Skerrit hasn’t yet asked for his resignation shows what kind of person our leader really is. He either condones these thoughts or is too weak to do anything about it. o well, thats what we Dominicans voted for.

Once upon a time in the small realm of LaLaland, smaller and even less known than the equally mountainous principality of Andorra its ruler, Prince Charming was most upset. As much as he kept kissing the ugly frog it refused to turn into the beautiful princess as he had been made to believe. He asked two of his most trusted advisers, handpicked from the fabulous animal kingdom for their wisdom to convince his subjects that nonetheless the frog was areal princess. One, a member of the tumescent rabbit variety and the other, a specimen of the rarer “sandan” tiger breed, and prone to oral flatulence set to work tirelessly.During a break from their arduous, and thankless work the tiger moaned that despite all his roaring the subjects were very reluctant to see” white for black” and said to the rabbit: “What are we going to do?I have got no teeth and can not catch my own food” Whereupon the rabbit said.” But you have a big tongue, you can lick and suck.I, on the other hand rely on no one for my food and I can always live on grass. That’s why we rabbits are so successful. Besides, Imagine you had teeth. You might be tempted to eat me!. But don’t worry, as long as you keep jumping through hoops you will be fed”

That’s very irresponsible coming from the minister responsible for labour. But what else can we expect
from an administration that has reduced Dominica to a country of BEGGARS.They are continuing their
campaign to destroy all things Dominican. They have sold Dominica to the CHINESE who are destroying our local business while they turn Roseau into a “CHINA TOWN” of cheap, inferior and toxic

Charles Saverin is a DISGRACE!! to Dominica. This type of behavior is an indication that this man

In a free country, mr Savrin would have been fired by the PM; but because of the deep, deep, very deep hole Savrin and Astaphan put the honourable PM in, there is no way Savrin will be fired. These two gentlemen have put the young PM exactly where they want him and now they can do or say anything, knowing very well that they cannot be fired by the PM. They set him up for failure and he took the baite.

Martin de Porres is St. (Saint) Martin de Porres) I reside in Toronto and the parish which I worship in, St Martin de Porres is the Patron Saint of this parish.
If you are using such a saintly name, watch your language. Use respectful language and speak accordingly.
Some people utilize such names and they know nothing about them. Keep in mind that if you are a godly person and a practicing Catholic Christian at that, you should act accordingly and project godly examples in writing and speech. To do otherwise is to offend God and also this saintly man who lived his entire life for the Lord.
It is stated that if we want to become a saint and obtain eternal salvation, read the book, “The Lives of the Saints.” Their lives were godly exemplary and we should emulate them. I reiterate in our attitudes, manners and speech.

How could a minister of goverment, minister of National Security make such a statement over the airways. If we are to go ahead and boycott Breezemart, we would just be plunging DA in further trouble because many more Dominicans would be on the street unemployed. Although Savrin was the one who made that statement, I believe it is part of the Tony Astaphan strategy so they (Astaphans) could completely take over Da, if they haven’t. Savrin is a poison to DA and should not be allowed to hold any public office in the country. How sad and stupid to hear the national security minister tell the nation that he and his family have already boycotted Breezemart. Mr. Skeritt should be very very careful with people like Charles Savrin and Anthony Astaphan. Skerit is a good person but he has not realized that ton and charles are setting him up for failure. Shouldnt be people have their own political opinion. look around thats why everyone is afraid of giving their views on current issues. Are you saying you have to be “left” or pretend to be” left” to get recognise as a striving business. Saverin is ignorant to speak the way he spoke as a member of government by boycotting a business who provides employment in a country. Thats what needs to be done, stop the pointing of fingers on people who are not “left” and concentrate on building the country no matter wether they are “left, centre left, right or centre right.” What is the policies of the labour party ( is it you have to be a Labourite and only speak good of them to get by in the counrty) well all government gets criticism be it in the caribbean, EU, China, Asia, America etc so its time these ministers know what being ministers are and how to accept criticism and stop trying to control the whole country with their bullying and concentrate on regenerating the country economically, environmentally, creating employment and creating a sustainable country and my, my, my, is the Labour party useing the concept of the Maxist – exploiting people-structure of exploitation.

The only difference here is that jerry chose to speak his mind publicly as opposed to other persons who cannot live outside the Gov’t “Red Clinic” handouts. Apparantly, Jerry is speaking for you whether you would to accept it because you benefit from his business either directly or indirectly. Dominica has gotten to a point where adults despite position continue to guide our young people how to resolve their difference of openions. This utterance by a seating minister in the presence of the PM and Senior Counsel says everything about their upbringing. This call for a boycott by Charles Savarin can be considered akin to “An eye for an eye” and so I urge our children to look closer to home to find role models. Growing up in Dominica I recall following many prominent individuals lives to guide me and so I can say without any doubt very few gentlemen remain in Dominica; those who remain are afraid of coming foreward to serve because parliament is now “Animal Farm” and so everyone is jockeying for positions and inside track to individuals who can influence their success. Right now the PM has the unique opportunity to sack Charles Savarin to bring some respect to his office and cabinet. Further, one has to think carefully of Savarin crossing the aisle for his political accommodation not that of helping Dominica; let us be frank does Charles Savarin follow Mr. Maynard’s advice to, “think before you speak” or is this comment convenient when used by others outside the labour party. Therefore labourites you all have a stake in this issue because Charles Savarin will be the undoing of the labour party. I believe this will start the speedy decline of the entire labour party if Savarin is not dealt with, and will give him a card blanche to continue the demise of Labour. Remember, he did it in 1979 from the outside now he is on the inside of the party so can labourites imagine the damage he can cause being in that position; this may well be the legacy that Savarin will want to be known for so do not put it past him and I urge labourites to check the motive of Mr. Savarin.

Why are so many of you Dominicans so biased. Yes I agree that it was WRONG of Saverin to have said that on public radio he being a Minister of Government and all. But I myself felt the same privately. After all the man brought some of this anger on himself by sending this letter on his company letterhead (an act bordering on treason as far as I am concerned).

Now, many of you condenming Saverin here are quite content to accuse members of the government and their associates as criminals without any evidence to back that up (even private citizens many of whom are also providing employment to other Dominicans). Bubbles for instance is a man who worked hard to reach where he is and employs many Dominicans, but is vilified here by many. WHAT HYPOCRACY!!!

It is time this overall madness STOP in this country. THERE IS TOO MUCH HATRED AND NAME CALLING WHICH IS DISTROYING OUR LOVELY DA. Those of you who really want Skerrit out of power just have to wait your turn as in any democracy and try to do it by the ballot box. It appears that brisbane has been trying to close down his business for a while now. And he made it even worst by taking up a political front because he does not like the PM. His business has been struggling for some time now and he has taken a back seat in the day to day activities of the business.

When you as a business man choose to be on radio seven days a week running your mouth on the government, how you expect people to partronize you. You have one ice cream cone at EC$3.75 and you talk about the poor. Rethink your position of always being on the radio and concentrate on increasing the sales of the business.

Brisbane and others have said much more than that and when a government official make one little statement, all hell breaking loose.

What is good for the goose is for the gander. Stop back-bitting the governement and remember when you talk on others they will one day talk back.

Makes perfect sense to me. If Brizze mart collapses tomorrow, Dominicans will still eat and that food still has to be distributed by someone .. He is willing to take away their daily bread from their mouths so they can come to beg he and Skerrit for a dollar. Shame on this government. Charles Savarin should be ashamed of his self.

Mr. Brisabne simply asked the donor organization to supervise the spend of funds when given to Dominica. Read the letters people it was posted on DNO for all to see.

Who is Charles Savarin to dictate to me where I should spend my hard earned money. When my salary is paid to me for my work, its mine and no man should tell me how and where to spend it. He can dictate to his wwife and children how and where to spend their money but not me. He is rude. I read the letters written by Jerry and he is right. There must be accountability and transparency in funds loaned or grants to Dominica because its my grand-children who are going to pay for those monies which if not spent properly we will not reap any benefit. Jerry’s actions may sting some peoople, so be it but we need a few more like Jerry to put things back on the righ footing in Dominica. There are lots of under hand activities going on in this country and it must be stopped. When people say they do not want to leave office broke like former politicians this sends a message to us; and then we hear their names involved in millions of assets, surely there are going to be questions and some things are so glearing. So Jerry I am a public officer and I cannot speak but I am seeing and hearing, and my brother in support of your actions, I will continue to shop at your place until I drop. Crazy Tee had told us do not shop at Astaphans when he was at war with them, now he is in their bossom, and the same things are being said on his radio station. Do so never like so. Like the small business loans, so long I and other small business men trying to get a loan, of just a $5000.00 to develop our businesses and no answer from the government but look at krazy t getting load of $500 000.00 to develop his already successful business, and no I am not hating on the man he have a good business but government must stop showing preference, if they can grant them big loans they can surely grant us small business men loans.

the interesting part of the interview was not Savarin’s comments but rather the PMs reaction. when asked to comment all he said or smthing to the effect was “i’m listening, go ahead”. He didnt sound ready to support Sevarin’s comments

    November 16, 2010

Wow! Where is this leading us to?
Victimizing people who do not follow the line is NOT a solution to go forward in a 65,000 inhabitant island.
True democracy must be above this.
We should stop attempting to destroy those who have the guts to open and run businesses in our island for pure political reasons.
Politicians choose to serve and represent the people and protect our interets, that’s why we vote them in and nothing more.

Parade of Fashions did not benefit from shoe sales while the government was buying shoes for our needy children because Aaron write songs against them, then the boat captain stuck in venezuela had to apologise for speaking against the government for not helping him in Venezuela, now we are asked to stay away from Brizee Mart because Jerry Brisbane is speaking out against what he thinks is unfortunate…. Hmmm watch out people…….. These are just a few of the many things happening….. Sounds like Chaverism and Castroism better known as hmmmmm Dictatorshipism?

  145. Disturbed with Ministers call to boycott O D Brisbane & Sons/ Brizee's Mart
    November 16, 2010

Senator the Honorable Charles Savarin is a disturbed man…and it now appears he has been disturbed from a long time ago, from the days he used to be badly defeated in general elections by the Late Great Michael Anthony Douglas in the Portsmouth Constituency to the point where his supporters called Portsmouth people Black Caribs because in those days only two constituency voted Labour: Portsmouth and the Carib Reserve. In those days also his supporters used to say “Mike Like Mike” but Dominicans will see his true colours soon…I hope it would not be too late. To his masterminding the fall of the Dominica Labour Party in 1979 and today we Labourites playing like we have fowl brains and not recognizing Charles Savarin only there for what he can get. Not forgetting his big defeat in Roseau by Norris for Roseau, the Honorable Norris Prevost, my Parliamentary Representative. All Charles Savarin have is TALK and TALK IS CHEAP. He never employ no body in Dominica yet so what authority does he have to call for the boycott of O D Brisbane & Sons/Brizee’s Mart. What groceries does Charles Savarin or his wife buy that will make a difference even though he buy it from a Cabaway or from Astaphan? I am surely saddened by his call to Boycott but Dominicans will prove him wrong. You put in wolf in sheep’s clothing it still remains a wolf. You put a pig in a palace, it is still a pig.

When Charles Savarin decide to invest all the millions he has amassed since CSA days to now and employ as twice as much people Jerry Brisbane employing, when he decide to donate to charity, schools and other institution as twice as much as Jerry donating, and, he can begin to smell the word boycott and even that will not cause the people of Dominica to boycott one of Dominica’s premiere good corporate citizens, O D BRISBANE & SONS/BRIZEE’S MART.

Now for Mr. Anthony Astaphan, how would you like if you were as outspoken as Jerry Brisbane to call for a boycott of J. Astaphan & Co Ltd. Would you like that? Come on, I really like your programme because it brings out the other side of a story but when the programme seeks to destroy poor people’s livelihood not Jerry Brisbane livelihood but poor people, because like you, Jerry is a millionaire, what do you think people will agree with that. Ask Charles Savarin to apologise the next time he on your programme good man.

And to the Honorable Prime MInister…please Honorable Prime Minister be mindful of the JACKAL in your midst…you are a man of the people, loved by the people, please do not make Charles Savarin actions bring you down the drain, ask him to apologise. If a Minister is attacking local businesses so viciously do you think this will encourage foreign direct investors to come?

As a civic minded Dominica, I am calling on the Senator from Roseau, Senator the Honorable Charles Savarin to apologise to Jerry Brisbane, O D Brisbane & Sons/Brizee’s Mart and its employees and the people of Dominica for his very disturbing statement. How can you call your self the Minister for National Security when you calling for bboycott of a good corporate enterprise? do you want the workers who would have been sent home to engage in crimminal activity so you could have work to do? Shame on you. That’s my place of work so I must be upset with you man, shame on you.

Nothing coming out of this man’s mouth does not surprise me. It is so obvious that this is a desparate man; he sound like a child speaking great things of his bully friend in order to continue playing games in the school yard. What a shame! What a big shame! A grown man who I have known to be in politics since I was a child; I am now approaching 40; and this man is still in the background barking and grabbing at straws to be part of a group. I recommend that Mr. Savarin replays these taps and analyse his statements; I do not know; but it sounds extremely rediculous that two grown men have to set up a radio program in order to protect a Prime Minister. But again, wherever Mr. Savarin is placed he will accept; because he cannot do anything for himself; he is just a puppet; and his strings will be pulled until they become worn out.

I guess when we obey the commands of Mr. Savarin to stop shopping a Breezie’s Mart, and the business collapses; he will be able to provide jobs for those who were once employed there. This Government has not had one good initiative for sustainable employment to Dominicans. So Mr. Savarin, think before to continue to speak nonsense!!!

It was he who told Dominicans in 1995 that they must never let the UWP settle down and that they must AGITATE every day.It appears that they concured then so he has the power to tell to boycott people’s business.

It was no accident that the PM was there. Savarin is the one using the hatchet for him. this Savarin has lived off the backs of Dominicans for too long. @Devoted Dominican.: and @gaynproud: you guys qualify as some of dominicas dumbest. you need to learn how to read, process information. is the english language to difficult for you guys to comprehend? we must have read 2 different letters cuz the ones that were posted on DNO in no way states that these donor countries shouldn’t assist dominica. all the gentleman calls for is accountability in ensuring that these funs are use for projects they were airmarked for and that a tendering process be part of the awarding of projects to construction companies. be real what purpose does a state palace serve in this current hard economic times?

the real issue here is that incompitent savarin making such a rediculous statement when he has never employed anyone in his life time cuz he don’t have the testicular fortitude to take on such business venture. one of the governments goals is to reduce unemployment right? how then can you ask dominicans to boycott brizees mart? what do you think will happen? the 100 plus workers he got there will be out of a job thus compounding the unemployment situation, the also have families relying on the income they earn from brizeeesmart. is mr savarin going to meet those families financial responsibilities?

no wonder CSME can’t get off the ground, because with leaders like that we are surely out of it.

    @Devoted Dominican.:
Devoted Dominican. Who or what are you devoted to? It cannot be Dominica, certainly not.
Have you ever seen it fit to comment on the issues which Mr. Brisbane has raised repeatedly over the airwaves? Have you taken the time out to visit the river wall below the UWI to see the atrocious job which was done there? a job which will most certainly, cost the country millions to put right. Do you have any counter arguments to Mr Brisbane’s assertion that tens of millions of dollars would have been saved had there been a proper tendering process for those infrastructure projects of which he speaks? Have you ever seen it fit sir/mdam to correct the many erroneous statements made by the PM, many of which are meant to divide the nation eg. 20% reduction in port charges “which will mean a saving of 20c on each dollar” Until you do sir/mdam, you are not fit to call yourself a devoted Dominican. I would further suggest that if you are looking for people to blame for the poor state of Dominica, as you put it “WHY DOMINICA WILL ALWAYS REMAIN THE SECOND POOREST COUNTRY IN THE CARIBBEAN, NEXT TO HAITI”. That you look no further than persons like charles savarin, because as he himself stated in his statement he quite used to inflaming passions and dividing the nation

While I beleive that Savarin overreacted by making such a statement Jerry must realize that if aid from friendly Governments and Organizations are with held his Co. and the entire nation will suffer and while he is apparently against the Govt his actions are bordering on Treason. No patriotic son of the soil should go to that length to try and satisfy his ego and in doing so affect the country negatively. We always need to think twice of what we ask for as many times it comes back to haunt us.

The fact that Mr Brisbane used his company’s letter-head to write these letters does not fit in with his assertion that he’s writing as a private citizen. O B Brisbane and sons is a registered company involving more than one individual. I would suggest that the Government take legal actions both on Mr Brisbane as an individual and O D Brisbane and sons as a company if the company doesn’t disassociate itself from these letters.
Mr Brisbane has accused the government of misappropriation of public funds, in my mind this is a very grave accusation. Unless Mr Brisbane has strong evidence to back up these accusations, then the Government should sue him and his company for Libel. However as a government minister, i don’t think that it is right for Mr Savarin to call for a Boycott of Mr Brisbane’s company, where as, if they manage to sue Mr Brisbane and his company successfully then this would be enough to see them them go under.

It’s time that they get rid of this parasite they call Charles Servarin. He is more of a liability than an asset to the government. Washed out politician singing for his damn supper. At his age he should be retired somewhere doing community service. He is just collecting a pay cheque for a job that a younger person could be doing. I can’t believe that the person who has been trusted with the position of minister of trade would advocate boycotting a local business who creates employment and marketing opportunities to farmers and other locals.

This man is the most irrelevant member of cabinet, and a politician. No wonder he was shipped to Brussels to take piano lessons.

Come mister Prime Minister, show us what you are made out of. And how much gall you got. Are you going to keep Charlo or are you going to give him the boot. If you do not take action against Charlo now for the statements he has made it may just cost you the office of prime minister.

Charles Savarin should be ashamed of himself. Wasn’t he (Charles Savarin) who was in the trade union business? Now he is asking Dominican to boycott Brizee’s Mart. When Dominicans do that, people will be out of jobs. What does that man really think? It’s not a political thing. It’s a common sense thing. Shame on u Charlo. Why dont you ask Dominicans to boycott Chinese restaurants and stores? but again, still, Dominicans will be out of jobs. So Please Mr. minister, retract your statement and apologize to Mr. Brisbane and Dominicans and help build our country. I never know that Dominica is no longer a democracy? So we as Dominicans are no longer free to express our views and concerns, whether it is in writing or verbally? Come on man. I am not saying that a citizen should try to block aid from coming to Dominica but if there is a genuine concern, well it has to be expressed.

I am base in i the Uk and heared the comment by Mr Savarin. There was no sence of professionalism by the members of panel on the discussion. How can they go on radio repeating names of people like this instighting violence by thier tone especiallly by Mr Saverin. These men should know better, over an hour talking on that matter and castigating Mr Brisbane a promient Dominican business man and son of the soil.

He may be wrong to write to the to the donnor orginsation but that was not the way to deal with the matter. I am very disapported in all of the men on the panel including the prime minister who was part of the discussion. I am a labour supporter but this was totally wrong.

What about if he decides to close down his business who is going to employ his staff? He is creating employment for his people . How can he say that on adio so open ,to boycott O D Brisbane , He think he is hurting Jerry, he is taking bread from DOMINICAN MOUTHS.

Well I cannot see why those sort of advise or suggestions from a leader of government is necessary. Citizens of Dominica should be able to make their choices; and if this is the Minister’s choice, why does he think that citizens should comply, even if he thinks he has a good reason for making that suggestion?. I must say that is not a very mature, leadership, nor authoritive move.

It sounds more like telling people do not stay on the side of this person, come to my side. Should I not allow people to examine my terms, my attitude and conducts, my motive and my character as they decide for themselves? Mr Minister,

Please focus on the job you have as a Gov’t offical (paid by D/can taxpayers) and SHUT UP about this issue. A person in your position has to exercise better restraint and CHOOSE YOUR WORDS CAREFULLY. Remember what you say in your capacity as a minister is heard not only in D/ca and within the region but also by donors in the EU, Asia and elsewhere.
