Pundits agree UWP is at crossroads in terms of leadership

Political leader of the UWP, Ron Green

Businessman Parry Bellot has said he is supporting a statement in the Chronicle’s Newspaper which suggests that the United Workers Party (UWP) is at the crossroads in terms of political leadership.

Bellot, a former press secretary under the deceased Eugenia Charles regime, said the UWP is on the wrong track.

He told Kairi’s Heng radio programme that the party shows disorganization and no real leadership.

Bellot said there has to be a drastic change within the party.

“They have been doing a lousy job as providing the possibility of an alternative government. The new Opposition leader has been very disappointing but generally the party shows disorganization and they are going nowhere. There has to be a drastic change if they want people to start supporting them at some point,” Bellot argued.

He says the Oppositions failure to attend parliament has upset the Dominican people.

“People do not accept that this is the way to go. There are several other alternatives to show your protest and disagreement with government policies but when you are elected to represent people, you need to do just that,” he said.

Meantime former Attorney General and candidate for the UWP in the 2009 general elections Bernard Wiltshire says while he agrees to statements that the UWP is at its crossroads, it has to do with the country’s political climate.

“If you look quite frankly at all oppositions, the political structure of Dominica so far has revealed that all Oppositions tend to be very weak,” he explained.

He said one of the problems plaguing the opposition is finance.

“The opposition tends to be very weak. If they make mistakes it becomes worst and the UWP undoubtedly made mistakes,” Wilshire said.

Dominicans are rappidly becoming 3rd class citizens in Dominica.
Within a few month they will have the dual citizenship state plastic prefab palace.
China town in Portsmouth to match the current ‘Roseau’ china town. The patch work highway to Portsmouth will facilitate their 3rd class citizens commuting to do the menial labour in the chinese hotels at fond cole and cabrits…
The negre maron descendants who are not mentally ill or drug addicts would have all run away from the political victimization.
And since the only revenue generator is from the Drug trade …who will want to stay when the Cartels get a greater hold?

I AM WHAT YOU CAN SAY TO BE A POTOUWP-ITE AND NO FORCE ON EARTH WILL CAN EVER CAUSE ME TO ABANDON MY UWP.

Having said this I do believe that we have quite a lot of work to do and hence new leadership thrust is sorely needed. Let us end the this untenable argument and hypocrisy about bribery at elections. I was given a ticket by my party to come down and vote ( in fact I had two separate tickets). Clearly we were out spent and out strategized by Labour. Nearly 5000 votes leaving us is a serious matter. Well the issue rests on the fact that when the uwp was formed Labour was not ready as yet. Observers were of the view that Mike was not really too serious about removing Mamo but more critcally Freedom was super strong and there was divisions inside DLP. Hence the only reasonable option available to non Freedomites, disgruntled Freedomites and confused Labourites etc was the THIRD FORCE which emerged into a formidable UWP. Evidently we are a hybrid party which lacked a well articulated philosophical framework but meant well.

OUR PROBLEM STARTED WITH THE ADVENT OF ROSIE DOUGLAS assumption to the leadership of the Dominica Labour Party. This iconic charismatic figure was always loved and respected by ALL labourites many to return to their proverbial Political roots of labour. This was never on the forecast of the UWP and the effect of this continued even after his passing.

What do we have now ? The chap from Salisbury is clearly faced with a lot of difficulty in attracting supporters to his fold. No matter how noble his intentions are I don’t think that he can inspire us into any Political Electoral Success. I know Dominicans! What then are our alternative as a party. I eanrestly believe that we have to look at the capital of the UWP- its epicentre for leadership and direction. There is no region in Dominica that has the personel, resource, committment, leadership and political astuteness like Marigot to take UWP back into the corridors of power in Dominica. We must stop taking ourselves for granted and begin to assses and exploit the tremendous potential that do exists in Marigot to begin to re-structure and re-brand the UWP. I think it is too long that we have stood by and just watch our party decline. Margot is just one constituency however we do have a capacity to create meaningful change I think that the spark shall come from us. Our former and beloved leader Mr James must decide whether the party as constituted can win a general elections and if not whether he is prepared to reclaim the leadership. if he is not convinced that it can then he himself must step aside and identify someone from Marigot who has the qualities, intellect, respect and influence not only to replace him in Marigot but more importantly assume the leadership of the UWP. I NEED NOT CALL NAMES BUT THERE ARE MANY MARIGOTIANS WHO HAVE A CLEAR TRACK RECORD OF WORK AND HONOR WHO CAN DO JUST THAT. THEY ARE ALL OVER DOMINICA AND THE DIASPORA! MY PREFERRED CHOICE IS THE DOC! AND THERE ARE SO MANY PERSONS WHICH THE UWP SENT SO MANY YOUNG PERSONS OVERSEAS nd from amongst that group persons can be identified.

I THINK WE HAVE TO TAKE A LEAF FROM THE LABOURITES WHILE THEY WERE IN OPPOSTION THEY NEVER HAVE UP!

We workers have to face the reality of politics and regroup…its ten years now since we have been losing support and new blood is required…..I even hear that there is a move to even form another opposition party. What then are the implications of this to our party? is it going to strengthen our political base or further weaken it? These my friend are part of the reality which must be faced. When last we haer a statement from members of our executive ? ITS JUST LENOX. ANGELO, MATT etc who continue to carry the battle for us. We can do much better than that..

Appears to me to be yet another show of insecurity by the DLP.
They simply cannot stop dirty campaigning because they know that the dec 2009 results would have been far different if they did not:
    1. Prevent regular flights by having almost all LIAT aircraft book as charters
    2. Did not import haitians, Chinese and spanish
    3. Make all other parties having minimal press access
    4. Stop the introduction of Voter I’d cards
    5. Have millions of unaccounted campaign funds
    6. Have other nations contributing to gifts (houses, fuel, boats, engines, …)just before elections.

    After all…did not the UWP:
    1. Win the bi elections?
    2. Get more votes in all the previous elections?
    3. Only get removed by a coalition (which fundamentally goes against the voters decision)?

Just the fact that they have to recruit Parry Bellot out of retirement speaks volumes about the DLP

Frankly, Dominica is at the crossroads. The economy is in decline, crimes and violence on the rise, corruption is plaguing the nation, unemployment is rising daily, and among others the Govt. is inefficient with a Leader mired in numerous controversial activities. The Dual citizenship case is classic and historic. The Constitution and Laws of the land have been openly violated. Many Dominicans are now agreeing, because of the facts, that the present leader of the country is there illegally because of his dual citizenship status at the time of nomination during the 2009 elections. Dominicans are feeling the heat. They are reeling from the pain of incompetence. Poverty is increasing. The standard of living of the majority is getting worse and worse and worse. People now bawling for the opposition to save Dominica from that malaise. They are capable, able and willing. Many of you know that.

Is Parry interested in the opposition getting stronger or governing? Are the supporters of the DLP GOVT. concerned really about opposition and leadership? Many of them would like to see the opposition demolished. They are simply shedding Crocodile Tears. The Leaders of the opposition are CLEAN. There is no comparison between Skerritt and Ron, for example. Is like chalk and cheese. My people take time to inspect the CVs, experience of work, how honest each one is, attitudes and behaviour of those two politicians and leaders and you will see. The only area one would surpass the other is in assets, material wealth. We all know how that wealth was obtained by one of them. The facts are stubborn to accept.

I agree with most of what has been said as they relate to the responsibility of the opposition party but my problem is this. Many of those making these comments seem to have just woken up from a deep sleep, a sleep which they will return to once this labour(skerritt) party is out of office.
Who is parry to advice anyone on when and how to oppose? For those of you too young to know and those old enough but have somehow forgotten, I’ll take you back to the seventies.
parry bellot as part of the freedom party which opposed every single thing which was done in Dominica by the then labour party governments. Notice I said “governments”, meaning that whatever your view is of P.J, the despicable behaviour of the freedom party was not only directed at PJ but also at Mr. E.O Le Blanc. In parry’s eyes, there was nothing done by the governments which was worthy of praise. I dare say that one day before I depart this earth I will see once again a return to this attitude by those who now frown upon it. So examine your consciences as you make your comments and let’s hope that you will not be found wanting when the time comes.

Before I go even further, let me declare that I am independent – I am only interested in the development and progress of my people, no matter what who the government may be. If they’re doing good, I will say so. If not, I will also say so.

Having said that, I also will say that I would have to agree with Mr. Bellot. The role of an opposition party is not simply to oppose the government of the day; an opposition party must, if they want to survive, give the population at large a reason to support them at some point in the future. Opposing for the sake of opposing is ridiculous and the people who need to be convinced that you’re a viable alternative will get tired of it eventually. Only the “POTO” supporters will agree with that, and that is a losing proposition. A political party should always strive to seek the support of the population at large, not just your base; your base is NOT a majority, so how do you expect to govern at some point if you cannot move beyond that base?

Everyone, government and opposition alike, have within them constructive ideas as to how to develop and move the country forward. It is only when a dialog is created can such ideas move from thought to action. The government as well deserves blame; in order to move the people to the proverbial “next level”, it is incumbent upon leaders in government to understand that they are not the only ones with ideas, that engaging everyone whether they’re your supporters or not, is intrinsic to the general progression of the people at large. One may argue that the constant bickering by the opposition has made the government so fed-up with these antics, that they instinctively dismiss any and everything that comes from that direction. At the same time, the opposition may feel that the government is disrespectful of them and to show their disapproval, they constantly complain.

BOTH are wrong. This is where real leaders lead. Hubris is never a good trait in anyone. When the good of the people is at stake, real leaders take a stand for the good of all, not just themselves or their followers. In the absence of leadership, there is societal decay. BOTH now seem to be shouting at each other, but neither are listening to the people.

But I am inclined to blame the people too. The people of this country need to take a stand and demand answers from their leaders. I read in DNO just last week I believe, that the opposition was requesting offices in government HQ, or something like that. Sounds like a good idea to me; I would hope they get it and that they will use those good offices to do the work of the people who elected them to serve. But what struck me was that “special counsel” Tony Astaphan responded to that request. First question; who the hell is Tony Astaphan to respond to matters of state? Who elected this man? Second question; what is this “special counsel” title he has? Special counsel to who and what? The PM? DLP? Government? if its the PM, then matters of state have nothing to do with him – he must stick to matters of a personal nature that involve the PM. If its the government, last time I checked there is an Attorney General who is the governments legal arm. Is the AG’s office so dysfunctional or is it so impotent that they need outside counsel to advise them? Or if its the DLP, that’s not his business either. Representing the DLP is not the same as representing the government. Representing the government implies by its very nature, that you’re representing the people of Dominica – and who here can say that Tony Astaphan is a representative of Dominicans.

That’s where I blame the people – this man has gotten too big for his britches. Dominicans must take a stand on that themselves. Who the hell is Tony Astaphan to talk for people!!!!

    • garfunkel
      May 17, 2011

And there I was thinking Tony was just expressing his opinion same as you have done above!
Seems is just one set of people who are free to express opinions, in print, on radio or howsoever.

      • warma
        May 17, 2011

I am not disputing Tony’s right to his opinion, nor would I even THINK of depriving him of that right, but my contention is that the way it was presented, his quoted remarks, it would appear that he apparently was providing an impromptu or off-the-cuff government reply to the request of the opposition; THAT is the issue I have. But if, as you suggest, he was only giving his personal opinion as a private citizen, then I stand corrected. In any case, the onus is on Tony himself; even though he may have been expressing his own opinion, he must be mindful that his comments are open to interpretation based on his association with the government/DLP. He must know that whenever he says something remotely or directly relating to politics, it will be seen as a defacto response from the government/DLP. Therefore, do you think him talking was a deliberate attempt to put forward the government/DLP’s position and if anyone says anything, he can quickly retreat to the “that’s my opinion” position? That’s possible – that man is conniving, I would not put that past him. The onus is also on the government. They have a spokesman and they need to let Tony know that he does not speak for the government of Dominica in any capacity.

And can someone pleaseeeeee explain this “special counsel” title.

I guess Parry is earning his salary he doing a productivity analysis of Dominica’s political parties. Way to go Paryy Bellot after all your job is clearly defined.

Parry’s deduction are simply marvelous- how did he come up with such diagnosis. Wow. I can’t believe it took a genius like Parry Bellot to figure out that the UWP is discombobulated.
Parry thanks for the hard work and while you at it please tell us why the present administration is like a sail boat on the ocean without rudder , a broken engine and no sail for backup. Would you tell us why it is that after 11 years the party in power has not created sustainable economic development. Can you tell us why the present administration is referred to as a seating bucket in the desert just waiting for an eventual rain- that is a few Chinese or Venezuelan donations.
Don’t forget to submit an invoice for the worthy advise provided on the use of the 7 special advisors to the PM.

While I am certainly not a big fan of Mr. Bellot, he was simply offering his “expert” analysis of the situation, which he certainly has the right to do as a citizen.

You sir, on the other hand, seem to have your own political axe to grind. To say the government “has not created sustainable economic development” is pure and utter rubbish. This DLP government has advanced our nation further along the path of development than all the previous governments combined. Open your eyes and look around, Dominica is developing at an accelerated pace – our infrastructure, and our natural resources as well as our human resources are being utilised to develop our nation, like never before.

As for being a rudderless ship… we know who is at the helm of the DLP ship it’s Hon. Rossevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister. The UWP ship has too many captains, and one don’t worth the other… that’s a ship that’s sure to run aground and be left to rot on the shore of despair. You my friend should start looking for a new boat, or come join us there’s always room on the Labour Boat.

The difference between my contribution and yours is that I speak without reservations whetre as you speak when you told to do so. Obviously I am not a polittical bouncing ball and I have no alliance to any one political party in Dominica. I call it as I see it.
Your propaganda is baseless and cannot be proven when Dominicans cannot truthfully claim that life is better. ” The DLP has advance our further along the path of Development”- You are right are walking along the path of development and not on the path of development. On the path of advancement there are bridges to cross and milestones to reach. walking along the path does not mean you are on the path for when you get to the bridge – I think we are almost at the location of the bridge crossing . Just hold your breath cause the fall is about to cause serious pain.

Dominican politics is like an old movie rerun, again, again, again and again.

Look, in the 3rd world elections are for governments to loose and oppositions to win. Yes I aggress with Wiltshirte- if you don’t have $$$$$$ then you don’t have love or support. Now Parry‘s man has lots of love and support——–he has the red clinic as well.

But I think if the UWP gets a robust grass roots organization policy going similar to the Young Freedom Movement in the villages and communities, they will slowly they will get back to the top of the hill.

In 10 years old man Parry will be supporting who ever is holding the reigns of power- and if its not Labour, he will be calling them disorganized.—The old movie will run again. If you have power then I am your friend and you are a nice guy or lady is the working formula.

I am entertained by Dominican politics and the players, sub players and radio – the Heng, Q95 FM and even Pappy. Sadly while everyone is particiating in the movie reruns, the Chinese are slowly and surely taking over our country.

What the UWP need is new leadership, get Green and James out, and get some people with different ideas. We can learn from other countries where a party did very bad in an election, the leader resign making room for someone else to take over, point in case Canadians just went to the polls, two parties did very bad, both leader resigned the next day. We still have Green and James as leaders, something is wrong.

Well said these two men should take a back seat they are contributing to the bull shit that Skeritt and his men are doing they just repeat the same things over and over again therefore they should be going out to recruit new blood to the party they are not going any where, As for being in the House they should but on the other hand the SPEAKER must and have to allow them to stand and ask questions and also suggust ideas towards the making of Policies but it is discouraging when you have someone who have the power to keep the OPPOSITION down at any course and that must stop but of couse it is for the benifit of Skarett and his DLP supporters
DOMINICA is just to important to those of us that believe in the justice and promotion of our lovely ISLAND.
So to Edison and Ron think of what and where you want the party to go and get ready and prepare for the next general election leave it up to the Citizen Form guys to spead out for D’ICANS the dirty corruption that Skeritt and his DLP men and supporters are involved in and attend to the business at hand .
I say to Skerritt and the Speaker since you are missing the OPPOSITION in the House you are calling them back to the House then I would suggest that you conduct yourselves according to our CONSTITUTION and stop behaving like bullies.
And to the peoples of D’ICA we must have an Opposition party maybe it is time to entertain the idea of both opposition parties coming together and form one large party and give the DLP a run for their money also one of function their fuction is to keep the GOVT in check so do what you have to do to get back on track we need Election Reform but we not hearing you all say anything about those men/women who are on that Committee that have to be accountable to the people of DOMINICA and they cannot just sit back and do nothing it is their resposibility to approach the GOVT for the funding that it needed and stop shifting the blame on Skeritt,we the people know how to be little and distroy one another but the most important things that we need to do in D’ICA is left undone it’s time we all take a stand.
You need to send them to Tiyani Behanzin and justice will be done.

Way papa :who tell you that Eddison going and let go his party for any body? He prefer to die with it. He like a Mal fini over Spags and it was so with Earl. Since a man calls a press conference and directs the reporters as to which question they should ask, dont you see the man is tired, unprepared for any thing beside the rhetoric of electoral reform, clean the list and access to dbs. MOVE ON EDDO,RON, PREVO AND LET NEW BLOOD FLOW.

We would like to see you in the house debating the issues of the day, challenging any new legislation being passed in the house thereby making the people aware of the pros and cons of these new laws being enacted and being able to decide for themselves if they are worth being written in as laws in D/ca. Do not take the position that you are the minority and any legislation before the house will be passed anyway. You will be doing Dominicans a favour by keeping their eyes open. You will therefore have a wider audience and will gain the respect of a lot more Dominicans by showing them your point of view. Remember the late Eugenia Charles, Michael Douglas etc. They debated the issues thereby revealing any hidden agena by the government. This could prove to be very fruitful come next general election.

Remove you stupid speaker and they will go to debate in the house. Why don’t you ask the old speaker to allow them to debate? Would you continue going to a house to debate and from the time you open your mouth the speaker shutting you up? This is fraustrating. They attend parliament but they do not debate because they are not allowed to.

There are “standard rules” for the House of Assembly, including how to submit questions for consideration and how to conduct yourself during a debate. The speaker is well within her rights to insist that the opposition understands this and organise themselves to work within the existing framework.

Don’t blame the speaker. The house has rules which has to be followed and in my opinion, she is doing a good job of it. Of the persons complaining, how many of you follow the proceedings of the House and get aquainted with the standing orders?

A Chinese friend of mine told me that Dominica is the easiest country they are going to takeover.
In there quest for world domination.they are buying this country, without opposition.and this might just be true,if some sort of serious opposition is not in place soon.
