UPDATE WITH ACTING PM FULL STATEMENT: Rayburn Blackmoore lambastes David Bruney for statements made at Citizen’s Forum

Blackmoore

Dominicans must condemn a claim by attorney David Bruney that nationals are not acting against worrying matters, acting Prime Minister Rayburn Blackmoore has said.

Blackmoore said Bruney’s statement is encouraging “wanton destruction of life” in Dominica.

“All patriotic Dominicans regardless of their political views must condemn in the strongest possible terms, the irresponsible criminal call of Mr. David Bruney’s, an officer of the court, for Dominicans to declare war on each other,” he stated.

Bruney referred to riots taking place in England when he spoke at a public meeting of the Citizens Forum for Good Governance last weekend.

Violence and looting has been spreading throughout London after police reportedly shot and killed Mark Duggan, 29, of Tottenham a north London suburb.

Bruney said unlike the Britons, Dominicans fail to take protest action against matters that concern them.

Government is appealing to citizens to report to security forces any statement “from anyone” that is inciting hate and crime on the island.

Mr Blackmoore said Tuesday: “All Dominicans should be asking, has Mr. Bruney assessed the impact that his proposed criminal actions will have on the image of Dominica on the creation of jobs and on the economy of the island.”

Acting Prime Minister’s full statement below:

“All decent, peaceful and law abiding Dominicans must have been appalled and disgusted to listen to Mr. David Bruney’s endorsement of the riots currently occurring in England and incensed by his call for people in Dominica to do the same.

The wanton burning of property, the widespread destruction and looting of businesses and the stealing of property off an injured young boy by thugs are some of the frightening images of the lawlessness gripping England at the present time.

One is left to wonder who it is Mr. Bruney is caliing on to commence the wanton destruction of life, limb and property here in Dominica, and to what end?

Moreover, all Dominicans should be asking the questions, whose houses are to be burnt? Whose businesses should be looted and burnt? Which young persons should be mugged?

Has Mr. Bruney assessed the impact his proposed riotous actions would have on the image of Dominica, on the creation of jobs, and on the economy of the island?

We have grown used to the bashing of Dominica by certain disgruntled elements of our society, but even they have not called for the senseless and widespread wreaking of havoc, mayhem and destruction of life and property.

Mr. Bruney was born in England of Dominican parents, and today: he has labeled himself a traitor to the land of his birth as well as a traitor to the land of his parents, a country we thought he loved and which we also thought was his
homeland.

All truly patriotic Dominicans, regardless of their political views, should condemn in the strongest possible terms, the irresponsible and crirninal call of Mr. David Bruney, an officer of the court, for Dominicans to declare war on each other.

Religious and discerning citizens are aware that it is only the Great Deceiver who comes to “steal, to kill and to destroy”. We cast aside the evil in our midst, and pray blessings on our island.

The Labour Party led Government, in turn calls on Dominicans, the churches, the private sector, the trade unions, community organizations and all political parties to firmly denounce the call of Mr. Bruney and to be attentive, vigilant, on their guard, and report any statements from anyone intended to incite the commltlng of hate and similar crimes to the security forces.”

Isn’t it strange that this government has found itself doing more damage control than anything? Mr. Blackmore, have you not heard any of Tony Astaphan’s statements? Have you never heard him call for violence? Were your ears so far up your a** that you conveniently never heard Mr. Astaphan on your political platform? Mr. Bruney said something which is true; Dominicans are passive people and that is why your administration is taking advantage of us.

You want to know whose house to burn? GON Emanuel. You want to know whose business to loot? Jerry Brisbane. Any bells ringing yet Mr. Blackmore? How can you be such a saul. By the way, Tony Astaphan is also an officer of the court. What impact would a riot have on Dominca’s image? Absolutely no more than the image it now has of being a lawless state which does not punish criminals effectively and who allows citizens to be almost burnt in their own homes.

You are so right; Mr. Bruney was born in England so I do not even consider that treason. I consider you and Mr. Astaphan as the biggest traitors. You were born here and you have no problems in desecrating this country to achieve your means. This is treason.

Mr. Blackmore, I in no way or form support violence but I do support fighting for my rights. By the way, the great deceiver comes in may forms. The first place to look is in the mirror. Stealing, killing and destroying comes in many forms; labour party killed the agricultural industry, tourism industry, they stole millions from the treasury in different bobols and they have stolen the hopes of thousands of youth. Just some food for thought!!

By the way, we will not be silenced!!!

Minister Blackmoore as you are called by many, yes even that is questionable. The Word of Our LORD GOD when embraced, who ever believes in Him have a victorious reality. Now that is TRUTH not perception. So can you say sir in which classification do you fall in, religious or discerning citizen? If religious, not aware that it is only the great deceiver who comes, to “steal,to kill and to destroy”.Have you heard of the Spirit of Discernment? This is a Gift of the Spirit.Sir how can evil cast evil aside when the evil one know that a kingdom divided among itself cannot;hence a liar, all involved and embracing his views are liars and will breed liars. Sir I heard you mention praying blessings, did you mean there are those charged with the responsibility to govern but preying on the BLESSINGS in the island.Sir heard in the speech, labour Party led government calling to the churches.Sir do you think they will hear and respond? On the other hand maybe they will.In fact one of your government representative informed that your government had charged the churches with dealing with truths, whatever that is.I am with confidence that The church that Jesus built the gates of hell shall not prevail against. Those who are not concerned with truth cannot instruct Him nor will He hear and answer. He hears His children. No one comes to the Father unless The Father draws them by His Spirit and no one comes to the but by Me,Jesus. Therefore one must be concerned with the Truth that is hearing, speaking, obeying and following the Truth. With that said, sir is the labour Party led government a government against the Kingdom of Heaven Government led by Our LORD GOD? Sir there is time for change.Jesus said “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;”but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”For where your treasure is,there your heart will be also.”The lamp of the body is the eye.If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.”But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”No one can serve two masters;for either he will hate the one and love the other,or else he will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”therefore I say to you,do not WORRY about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink;nor about your body, what you will put on.Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”Look at the birds of the air,for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns;yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?”So why do you worry about clothing?Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow:they neither toil nor spin;”and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is,and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much ore clothe you,O you of little faith?”Therefore do not worry saying,’What shall we drink?’or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ “For after all these the Gentiles seek. For your Heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.”But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.Sir it pays to know and I Thank Our LORD GOD for His Word,His Son,His Spirit, time and growth.Sir with free will given to you the choice is yours.Choose life. Thanks for your time.

Bruney did not call on Dominicans to riot against law and order. He Made the point that Dominicans are regularly trampled upon but remain silent as though they are Sheep heading for the slaughter house. His call is for us to oppose nonesense and abuse of power when we see these things happening. Bruney is not alone in his call. Many Dominicans have repeatedly observed that we are a people of talk and more talk but no action. Rosie Douglas regularly made that observation when in opposition. I personally saw and heard Rosie Douglas at a meeting at Peebles Park in Roseau call on Dominicans to “take those fellas out” when referring to the UWP Government. It is very likely that Blackmore was at this meeting too. So, Blackmore, why the 180 degree turn? Are you fareful of something? Is the behaviour of your Government warranting public riot and death?

Dominicans have been very patient, too patient with you guys, if you knew the meaning of protest you would not be talking , my advice to you is to go and find out what the definition of PROTEST is.. Let me give you a hint Blackmore..Martin Luther King Jr. What have these people who elected you people n Government done to Dominica?

  39. RAS B
    August 10, 2011

It is disappointing when learned men talk such ignorance. Mr Bruney should retract his statement. Why would he call for protest of the nature happening in England over the past four nights. He will note that protest of this type in Dominica would automatically lead to travel advisory against visiting Dominica and possibly black listing of Dominica to tourist. Yet these riots are occurring in England, Birmingham included and Test cricket is being played in Egbaston in Birmingham. England is still actively preparing to host the olympics in less than a year.

Bruney should be intelligent enough to know that we can not behave in a similar way as the britons and get bye. We do much less in the caribbean and get black listed, so Mr Bruney be careful about what you ask for.

Mr Bruney, as per General Mc Cathney: ” nothing in this world is worth the price of war. It has failed to be an effective tool in solving problems, its only aim is wanton destruction, so whenever War is waged, our only objective is to bring it to a swift and complete end”.

Dr Martin Luther King said ” we must try to resolve our problems firstly through every form of normal means, by negotiation, petition and appropriate appeal to authority, having found these channels useless or forcibly closed and we embark on any form of law breaking, we must be prepared to accept the consequences that society will inflict on us and to maintain even under punishment a sense of brotherhood.

I do not support any political party in Dominica but I am a Dominica and support Dominica, hence I would hate to see my little country’s name be sullied by listening an acting on the advice of someone who is supposedly intelligent but has failed to exercise personal, responsible self governance. Please do not incite violence in our country.

      So Ras B

      let me understand you good…

So because we are a small nation, we should not stand up, forcibly if necessary, to demand proper representation from the very same individuals we elected to perform this function, out of fear that a travel advisory against visiting Dominica and possibly black listing of Dominica to tourists.

Ras… this is unacceptable. Many Dominicans are just tired and fed up the the lunacy that is being demonstrated by the present government. High unemployment, lack of foreign investment is a clear indication that they have lost sight of the needs of the people. As a people we must vouch our sentiments and let the leaders of Government understand that WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH…
To add to our insults, we see most of the jobs available are going to foreign workers when there are enough skill workers here that can benefit.

So tell me Ras, what do you expect us to do.

        August 11, 2011

Violence is not the answer namich2008. What is happening in England has deeper roots and it is highly disorganised. Surely you can not wish that experience on Dominica.

if you read the quotation from Dr Martin Luther King, it does not eliminate protest but it does suggest organisation… inter alia: ” we must first try to resolve our problems through every form of normal means, through negotiation, petition and appropriate appeal to authority….”

While you all keep on quoting Dr. King Please bear in mind that Dr. King was totally against violence. All his protests and demonstrations were peaceful that is why he had such an impact.

        All AWE Want Better,
I am disappointed with your approach, surely we can agree to disagree, but we must try to move away from the belief that if some one does not support our thought process it is because he has been bought!!! I sympathise with your powers of reasoning.

As indicated in my blog, I do not support any political party in Dominica. I believe that we need a good opposition party in Dominica, not a party who seeks to oppose everything for the sake of opposing but one which is able to weigh and balance issues, supporting that which is for the greater good but opposing that which is of no benefit to the masses. I pray God to give me the ability to discern the difference. This is exactly what I purported to do in my blog in which I commented on Dave Bruney’s irresponsible, puerile and emotional appeal.

I do not despise criticism but present a logical basis for your critique and let us have a discussion.

Bad advise Mr. Bruney. Peace is better than war, the ballot box has never failed and furthermore it is the only legal way to remove the wrong doers from office. Any other way is ill-advised. Where do you expect your support to come from? Other Caribbean nations, certainly not they will be looking at their backs. Think again, I advise that you go to London for the experience.

seems to me you were made of rage and you are fast reaching the point where you cannot continn it. As far as you are concerned it is riot or nought.

If it is a fight you want, go and fight your other half. If you want to see destruction, mash up your own house but leave us in our peace. We will do what we see is fit and right with our ballots – not your mad braying.

Mr blackmoore…..How would u explain a constitutional coolwosh brigade IN 1979?….a riot? or a demonstration? Nobody is calling for riots in Dominica….NOBODY IS ASKING FOR DOMINICANS TO KILL OTHER DOMINICANS. STOP TRYING TO PUT WORDS IN PEOPLES MOUTH!!!!
PROTEST ACTION IS A DEMOCRATIC RIGHT! RIOTING IS AGAINST THE LAW. WHY ISNT THE POLICE COMMISIONER TAKING ACTION AGAINST MR. BRUNEY THEN……WAS HE MAKING THREATS? PURSUE DE MATTER AND ARREST HIM……..HE DID NOT TELL ME TO GO GET STONES AND BOTTLES TO THROW AT SKERRIT VEHICLE WHEN IT PASSING BY DE ROAD……STOP INCITING VIOLENCE SIR!! YOU ARE A FORMER POLICE OFFICER! STOP SAYING WHAT WAS NOT SAID! NOBODY ASKED DOMINICANS TO GO OUT AND BURN STORES AND SHOPS AND SET FIRE TO THE CITY. STOP SPREADING FALSEHOODS!!!!!!!!!

When should the citizens stand up for themselves? After they themselves have been brutally beaten and victimized? So many court cases sitting in court unablet to be solved? Why? No justice in DA anymore. The only reason they are trying to move fast on this issue is that the victims spending plenty money on this island and I suspect some of you politicians making something off them. David Bruney is a smart man… It’s time the people start taking care of themselves, if it causes problems then the powers that be must step in and do the right thing.

I agree with David Bruney!! The government in all forms is doing nothing to help the citizens feel safe. You cannot even get an answer on the phone from police stations. If we wait for the gov. to take action we will all be brutalized by thugs. Until the people show their displeasure in the backwards actions of this government the people must rise up.

  50. Truth B Told
    August 10, 2011

David Bruney doesn’t understand the primary difference between the current situation in England and life in Dominica. As an officer of the court he should know better than to call for riots and insight violence.

What he and the rest of his UWP cohorts fail to realise is that the vast majority of Dominicans do not wish to see our country in turmoil. We are proud of our country and prefer to focus on the many positives instead of the few negatives. We would rather build Dominica’s image than break it down. We would rather see our country move forward than return to the failed policies of the corrupt and incompetent UWP administration.

That is way we would rather work with the Labour Party Government in peace and harmony than cause trouble and strife in our beloved Dominica.

I hope Mr Bruney can understand this and stop his calls for violence and destruction.

ohh stop blowing gas. the millions of unemployed youth in England have nothing to lose by breaking the law, and nothing to gain by obeying it, much like the situation in dominica. the only reason u think dominica is peacful is because wherever YOU are in your pampered corner that the DLP put you. you do not feel the impact that your pacifism is causing….. though they may bend the law of MAN to fit their purpose and Desire, there is no such bending the law of the jungle….we have had enough of you and the likes of people like you….WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      August 10, 2011

At no time did Mr. Bruney call for riots. Maybe if you and Hon. Blackmoore had paid attention to the comments of Mr. Bruney in its entirety you both would have been able to better understand. Why is it that we take snippets of statements and blow them entirely out of proportion???? This seems to be the norm nowadays.

      August 10, 2011

I did not hear Mr Bruney’s statement, so I will not judge on hear say.

I have no problem will people protesting for what is right and fair. If/when it is done it should be a legal protest, NOT organised by any political party. It should not be about the needs/wants of the UWP/DLP, but about the PEOPLES needs and expectations.

We in Dominica must NOT view the riots in England as people rioting about justice and what is right, it is all about greed/possessions, the desire to cause havoc, a chance to confront the police and a chance to get even/take revenge on your enemies (one person has been killed and it is claimed that it was a revenge gang attack).

DNO: If pos, a copy of Mr Bruney’s statement for those of us who wish to read it. Thanks.
