Religious leader calls for ‘toning down’ of political language

Francis wants a return to civility
Francis wants a return to civility

President of the Dominica Association of Evangelical Churches (DAEC) Reverend, Marcus Francis, believes that the language used at political events must be toned down and returned to civility.

On Friday both political party signed a Code of Conduct in light of the upcoming general election and Francis said on DBS’ Talking Point on Monday that although some work has been done in honoring the code, there is still a lot more to be done.

“I believe our leaders have done some work and have made some effort to putting things in perspective, but I believe that there is still much work to be done,” he said. “I have been listening to some of the speeches in more recent times and there is much work to be done. I believe that the language needs to be toned down.”

He called on politicians to to refrain from crossing the line by going into “people’s families and illnesses.”

“I want to make a very special appeal to all our candidates to stay away from people’s families, to stay away from references to people’s illnesses, former or otherwise,” Francs said. “I think that is highly distasteful and I think the language needs to be toned down and the language needs to come back to civility, and that’s on all sides.”

He urged all politicians to deal with the issues and be responsible in their approaches.

“It can be done in a civil way, it can be done in a responsible way,” Francis said. “We are not perfect people and from time to time in politics, there will be the heat, there will be the debate, somebody will go off track.”

He said he is suggesting that even if someone goes off track, that person should recognize it and say “I want to bring it back into perspective.”

“So that when leaders begin to do that their supporters will take a cue from it,” Francis said.

Meantime President of the Dominica Christian Council Reverend Novelle Josiah, who also added his voice to the matter, said, “There is a line that we should not cross. When it comes to the violence and the character assassination, sometimes we go too far.”

He called on all the politcal candidates to play their part in keeping colleagues in check by informing them when they go overboard.

“I believe if we were to do that, it would make a big difference,” he said.

Francis must be more straight forward. The filth is coming from the mouths of the Prime Minister and Reginald Austrie. I noticed he is generalising and that is where I have a problem with these so called religious. Be frank and open with the situation. Its nasty and say who are the persons bringing people to the gutter.

People could not talk, assemble etc. It has gone too far. We need to take back our beautiful Dominica so change is a must.

Its is very shameful to hear all these filfy stuff coming out from the Labour party election candidates. The prime minister is just out of line, with his inhumane n discourteous words, and worst of all he is now calling on God to curse folks…
Next is mr Austrie, with so so much insulting n evil words comin from his mouth..
The whole slate of candidates and their speakers are being very nasty with their words…
How could one call these folks honourable.. the labour psrty is no role model to the children n youths..
The saddest part of this gutter poliitics is the applause of tge supporters…. Its a serious crime being a supporter of a party professing to be Christian but their words n actions reflect dat of darkness n satan.
St James in the bible warms us about the use of the tongue…
Sadly, these labour politicians and supporters, profess to be Catholics n members of the protestant churches…
Their priests, pastors and elders should be very concerned about the state of their souls. What does it profit a politician to win an election n lose his or her soul?
What does it profit a party to win an election n den lose its soul…. its coool to have ambitions but such ungodly actions just to win an election,,,, oh noooooo.
Please code of conduct commitee, call out da labour party for improper conduct…….

Yes I agree. Too much politics under cover. They wanted to crucify My bishop, Bill Daniel, who never stood on any pulpit preaching Politics. The only thing is that My Pastor was Bishop Exceptional. He prayed and gave council to Pm and the President of the state. Never did I hear him preaching politics , like those so called preachers now. Today they happy he not hear. His presence is so needed for stability. Just his humble self praying and interceding on behalf of the country. They detested him. They were jealous of him. They envied his position and look at them today, sitting, standing and lying down in that same position. All of them politically aligned. You are foolish to speak on behalf of other people. Are you in their brains? You are the one who is brainwashed. These men of the cloth need to show that they are men with back bone, when all they are doing is watching a bully on a playing field harassing the other kids and rather than saying to the bully , stop that nonsense, they just say “you all behave yourselves.” what is the use of having someone sign a code of conduct if you cannot police it? what good would it be for you to say you are bringing people together to come to an agreement and when it is broken, all you can say is “all you play nice?” The evangelicals are the ones that were telling the Prime Minister how great he was, now that he is making them shame with his gutter behavior and his inability to tame his big dog, now they are saying don’t cross the line, so what if they do, and they have, if you listened to any of the labour party meetings this weekend, so now we say… Boys be nice, don’t play too rough. where is the condemnation for the Prime Minister cursing Mr. Linton in the name of the Lord, where is the teeth of that document that you signed? Gentlemen, you can fool the masses with you fancy talk, I wonder if you really believe that you can fool the one in who’s name you profess to speak?

Child of God? No way! Who do you think you are? Those who consider themselves a child of God will never attack Priests and a Bishop at that and criticize them. You are the hypocrite who also lack respect. God knows it too.
You are dictating to them what they should state? The fact it was agreed to have the Code of Conduct signed which was previously discussed, it is sufficient.
You did not get the drift. You need to develop common sense and intelligence. You are no perfect person. Therefore, cease your criticisms.

IThe Facts November 17, 2014 I agree with you. These Dominicans are claiming divinity, through this name that name and the other name, and yet they have no respect for the Divine One, God Almighty Himself.

In the ancient days of Israel, Saul was the appointed King for the people , and he was after David to kill him. But when David found him and his men fast asleep behind a rock–he could have done whatever he wanted to Saul, but he did not lay a hand on him. Why? Read it below, from 1st. Samuel 24:

6 And he said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.” 7 So David restrained his servants with these words, and did not allow them to rise against Saul

I will continue to say to you, people of Dominica, that God is in control; He makes the decision as to what will happen in our country–through those whom He has appointed–their behavior–whatever its nature– belong in His power and His alone, you have no authority to judge them –take heed of this warning.

    You’re not serious as a Religious authority…

If you refrain from naming the exact Political Party (The Dominica Labour Party) who’s perpetuating this wave of obscene language then you’re doing a disservice to Dominica. I just don’t hear the United Workers Party doing the same, so why generalise your appeal – you should be bold and courageous in your attempt to keep the peace.

What the PM and his Cabinet are demonstrating is that no Law or Constitution can abate them from doing as they wish. These are worrying signs for Dominica and doesn’t urgur well for us Civilians living here and abroad.

If Skeritt was to tone down his political language, the mapuis, how do they expect him to win the general election. That is the only way he knows. One would have thought when the man became Prime Minister, he would have changed , but he has become worst. Imagine, the ink on the paper the code of conduct was signed, did not even dry, the man was on a rampage, calling Mr. Linton all kinds of defamatory names. His co partner, Tony, was even more destructive. , I believe this code of conduct is just not taken seriously, just talk. I wish to suggest that a penalty of $1000 should be charged to any politician who is guilty of violating the code of conduct.

Why are these so called church leaders so hypocrite. Come out straight and say a spade is a spade. They know very well that its the LABOUR LABOR Party politicans assisinating the other party candidates character. We all saw and heard them on TV. All week-end, the night at GRAnd Fond you should ha heard them LABORS and their supporters cheering and shouting, on Saturday night the same story and as for yesterday at Bth Estate it was shameful.. I was watching and listening to both parties, switching between channels and trust me, it was a plesure to listen to the other party. LABORS were empty and disgusting. Just to shameful and if you think the Leader was a good example, he was just as bad. These guys stoop so low you’d think they come from the gutters. I don’t think any person should hold them in high regards. SHAME ON THEM and shame on those who are afraid to speak direct to LABORs and tell them to STOP it.

To God be the glory, eh? Are you not a hypocrite? It would be a good thing if everyone, no exception yourself, cease sinning against God and offending him. When you have done that, then criticize and call others hypocrites. Until then, you are as guilty as Hell of the same.

What are the words of glory that you are giving to God through that futile comment of yours? Do you even know what the term “glory” means? Much more to know God; or else you could never speak such futility and claim you are glory to God.

And they expect people to take them serious !

Copycat. Only repeating what you heard others state. Some people do not comprehend the difference in speaking at a campaign, laying down the faults of the opposition as perceived and their election promises just to get elected and what the code of conduct is.

    • November 18, 2014

It is not their place to point finger at anyone or to mention people’s names–they are not God.

That is also the reason they do not speak directly to people, if they think they have done wrong, for that is always their opinion–which may not be guided by God; they cannot make any judgment without God’s guidance.

Therefore they are right to speak in general; those in question should know their place and to decide what to do with that place–the rest remains in God’s hands, as usual

Oh yea, what you don’t know older than you. These “so called men of God need to clean up their acts while they are sitting down. Too many pretenders behind God’s pulpit. They have failed God’s people. Get rid of the presences, adultery, fornication and other uncleanness before you come out and shout. The word says if my people who are called by my name will HUMBLE themselves and pray and TURN from their wicked ways, then and only then will I hear from heaven and heal their land.
Religious leaders, stop the hypocrisy behind God’s pulpit. Sit down and clean your act, leaders, ask your church for forgiveness, including those you caused to leave the church because of your wicked intentions. President of DAEC, huh, go to God my brother, go back to God.

  48. MY VOTE
    November 17, 2014

The response by the religious leaders are too generic, and broad-stroked. They must quote samples of specific statements and the politicians who made those statements in order to illustrate to everyone what constitutes a violation of the election code of conduct.
They must demonstrate that they will not hesitate to call out the offenders irrespective of who they are.
Not holding our leaders accountable is one of the reasons our politicians have no respect for us citizens of Dominica.
How can teachers prevent bullying in the schools when our children hear it everyday from the leaders of this country. Call a spade a spade or shut up. Stop making a mockery of what serious people do when they vouch to do stamp out undesirable behaviours.
SAVE DOMINICA FOR OUR CHILDREN NOT FOR YOUR SKIN POCKET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
