Second session of “People’s Parliament” planned for Marigot

Persons at the first-ever People's Parliament held at Harlem Plaza

PRESS RELEASE: The Movement to Restore Democracy (MRD) and the Dominica Citizen’s Forum will host Dominica’s second “Peoples Parliament” on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 6pm at the Marigot Credit Union Hall.

The Peoples Parliament is a public forum that was established to facilitate public discussions on important issues and to allow opposition Parliamentarians to do the work of the people even though they are protesting the proceedings of Dominica’s official Parliament. The first session of the People’s Parliament was held at Harlem Plaza, in the Roseau South Constituency with standing room only. The discussions of the first People’s Parliament session were interactive and lively, ranging on topics from public corruption to the economy. The second People’s Parliament will focus on a range of relevant current issues of both local and national importance.

Opposition parliamentarians, who are boycotting the state parliament, will be joined by other Dominican citizens, including new voices in the political arena and representation from Dominicans Abroad. In additional to the issues of the day there will be interactive contributions on the role of the constitution, the future of agriculture in the north and the revitalization of the national economy. Members of the public from all over Dominica are invited to listen and share their views on the important issues of the day.

The Movement to Restore Democracy and the Dominica Citizens Forum are civil society committees which are dedicated to the promotion of democracy, the rule of law and other good governing practices. The opposition members of parliament are engaged in a boycott of parliament to register their displeasure with the unlawful manipulation of the electoral process which resulted in an overwhelming Dominica Labor Party victory in the December 18, 2009 general election.

The opposition parliamentarians intend to maintain the boycott until new elections are called with adequate provisions in place to ensure that the new elections are free and fair. The Peoples Parliament will be held at different locations around the island from time to time to keep the people informed.

One of the best, if not the best locations for a Jet run way in Dominica is Castle Bruce. There is no turbulence above or around it.

Is time Sam and his boys get work to do. The country is moving on and nothing will stop the progress that is being made. Stop making a mockery of “Parliament.” Dominicans are fed up with the UWP and this is being conveyed in the comments made on this site. Is time UWP wake up and smell the coffee. The elections are over and Labour Party has won convincingly. Workers stay in the yard, thats where you belong.

  8. ECCB GOVERNOR APPLAUDS ARGYLE AIRPORT PROJECT

    Governor of the Eastern
    Caribbean Central Bank,
Sir Dwight Venner, has described the Argyle International Airport
Project as “fascinating and long overdue”.
Following a visit to the site on Thursday May 14th, Sir Dwight noted that the construction of an
international airport in St Vincent and the Grenadines is the
    fulfillment of a want by
Vincentians for proper airport facilities. Sir Dwight in
    commenting said that all
Vincentians should be proud of the efforts by the government to fulfill their years’ old dream.
He pointed out that St Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica are the only two countries in the region without an international airport, the result of which is
reflected in the fact that these two countries also have the
lowest per capita income in the region.
Regarding the viability of the project, Sir Dwight hinted that when one is calculating the
viability of any project one must take everything into
    consideration. He said some
projects may not appear to be viable, however, viability must be looked at in its totality: financial, economic and social. He then posed these questions: What
happens if St Vincent and the Grenadines becomes a modern state? What is one of the most important things needed for any modern state?
Sir Dwight opines that an inter-national airport in St Vincent and the Grenadines will provide ac-cess and increased level of secu-rity for vital things coming into the
    country.
    He hailed the decision by
government to go ahead with the construction of the international airport as a good one and said that personally he is very happy with the project. The Central Bank Governor noted that given the scope of work, 2012 for
completion is feasible providing that the pace of work is kept up. He however cautioned that
finishing will take time and that those doing the finishing touches on the terminal building will have to be monitored very closely to avoid undue delays.

I thought dem fellas were only having a little fun among themselves for the carnival. Well well I guess as long it is at their own expense they can continue to make fools of themselkves. Meanwhile the rest of us hardworking Dominicans will continue to do what we have to do to move our beautiful country forward and pay no mind to these idle, lazy men (and women).

I think i know their strategy, you see the house is called towards the end of this month, so they got the information (The paers for discussion), so they want to ask their parliament (the ppls parliament) permission to attend so it will look as if they were forced to respond to the need of their supporters.

THEY CANNOT ALLOW 3 SEATINGS TO PASS THEM BY AND END UP IN A BY-ELECTION, SO THEY WANT TO GET THE PEOPLE AT THAT SESSION TO TELL THEM GO IN THE HOUSE!!!

WHAT AN EXIT STRATEGY!! WOW!!! THEY SO SMART THEY MEETING BEFORE THE REAL PARLIAMENT EH SO THEY CAN LOOK GOOD!!!

I KNEW THEY DOH HAVE IT IN THEM TO STAY OUT ALL 3 SEATINGS, LOL I GUESS EDDO IS READY TO LEAD THE OPPOSITION IN THE HOUSE!!! NOT SPAGS OR PREVO, THATS EDDO THING.

GOOD STRATEGY IT WILL WORK GO FOR IT!! I’LL BE GLUED TO THE RADIO TO HEAR THE RESULT, I HOPE THEY SAY NO!!!! LOL LOL!!

If I was the government, I would ensure that two sittings of Parliament were called back to back and initiate a bi election. This would see if the voters in these three constituencies are happy with the representation being made by their Dominican Parliament representatives.

This will not include the CoCo Mackack Parliament. As Johnny P has written, “The Peoples Parliament is a public forum that was established to facilitate public discussions on important issues..”.

I would like to tell the oposition they have an opportunity to air their views in parliament . i dont believe it is so bad in dominca where the opposition cannot speak in parliament . they are just hindering developmemt by this kind of actions. The campaign is over let us put our shoulders to the wheel to build our land.
What kind of representation are they giving to their constituency.by staying out of parliament. i thinkthat this is disrespect.to the poeple and the nation, you are people who profess to love dominca. .
I say stop and reflect and do what is right.

Boring! Boring! Boring! The only assembly we’re interested in is the one democratically elected by the people and currently moving on from the election and attending to the people’s business in parliament. Ron and his bitter, twisted sour losers can get lost until the next election ( if they’re up for another beating). We have seen the initiation of new projects aimed at taking us to the next level, especially the road projects. DA is moving on without these guys. God bless Skerrit and his hard working team.

Wonderful idea. I believe the ruling party should embrace this initiative as a bench mark to remain focus and work in the best interest of the citizens.
To the opposition party, it is great to participate in such venture. But more than that, the peope also want you to represent them in parliament now that you have been priviledge to receive fist hand information from the people.

  22. This is a waste of time and money!
    March 3, 2010

As Sir Brian Alleyne said, “the opposition is putting themselves in a position to lose their 3 seats.” Therefore, the UWP is serving no purpose for being out of parliament. It is in the advantage of Freedom Party for UWp to stay out of parliament. The Freedom Party is building up while UWP is losing out on their representation of the people that elected them. These sessions are not having an impact on public opinion. UWP THINK AGAIN!

am that thing carried live nah over radio? but i need to understand their principles …am how are they going to help and represent the people if they are not in the”real parliament” which is where “national issues ” are dealt with..I need to understand their objective cause i am lost …People need to see progress not just talk about it..so get in the house and see what can be done for all u constituency and Dominica..choops..when will this nonsense stop? i mean the ruling party does not even seem to be disturbed by this nonsense…my people the way to deal with this issue is in the house not out of the house…cause yall just gonna lose all u 3 lil remaining seats
