Space constraints at the State House in Roseau is said to be the reason why the media and the general public are barred from attending the swearing-in ceremony of Lennox Linton as the Opposition Leader of Dominica.

Linton is to be sworn-in and will receive the instrument of appointment today but he told privately-owned Q95 that he was told of the space limits last week.

“I also received last week a call from the President’s secretary who indicated to me that in light of ‘a space constraint’ that they were not in a position to accommodate more than the five other elected members on the opposition side and my wife,” he said. “And also the President’s Office had invited DBS and GIS, and if I was so minded, I could invite Marpin.”

Linton said based on the correspondence received it appears the public is not invited to the ceremony.

He said he will be going to the State House with his wife at 10:30 and will later meet with his colleagues at the Prevo Cinemall in Roseau.

As leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Linton has increased the number of seats in parliament for the party from three to six.

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, was sworn-in as the country’s leader at the State House recently after his Dominica Labour Party won the December 8 general election. The ceremony was attended by a large number of guests.

Respect is not in the vocabulary of the UWP Lennox disrespected every institution in this country. He does not recognize the President nor did he want the State House so why does he want to associate himself with anything connected to these two entities? Lennox could have brought the other FIVE members that won their seats but no he preferred a journalist that shows the disrespect of his own members this guy is a phoney. The President should let him take the oath in front of the State House so he would have a big audience on Victoria street

Your response sounds rather childish. At the end of the day, want it or not, its Dominicans tax dollars that is paying for it. For your information the president is exempted from income taxes, this means that Lennox Linton contributes more to the upkeep of the building than him.

Wickedness fill the hearts of those who oppress their fellowmen.

King Dice was prevented from singing what he would like to sing at the this year’s WCMF. “Officials” in charge ordered him to sing old time road march tunes instead. King Dice has more than enough songs in his repertoire to thrill the WCMF fans for more than 2 hours, for sure. They did not want the world to hear the song, “It’s time for CHANGE.”

But guess what. That King Dice song, that gem of a song, among others,, was the rallying cries of the oppressed people of Dominica, yearning for real change. The Cabal couldn’t stop that brilliant song “IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE: from blasting messages of hope, of struggle against dictatorship.

Likewise, neither President, nor PM, none of the cabal could deter the patriots fighting for justice, peace and a better way of life.

Already they are displaying fear of the people, who would simply come to welcome Linton as Opposition Leader and to be in solidarity with the movement for change. The people are creating their own space, amidst all odds.

The olive branch in one hand and a stabbing blade at the back. Hearts of stone. At a Time for love, brotherhood, respect, witness again the attitude and callous behaviour of Gov’t officials of our Nature Isle?

So, this government wasted 25 Million on a state house that is to small to accommodate guests and all media houses of the island for the swearing-in of the opposition leader. Boy, stop telling us BS! Funny enough it was large enough for the swearing in of the DICTATOR. Double standards everywhere you go on this island.
Let me tell you all something, I came back to the island 2 years ago with the intend to settle but after this election I know this is not the place for me. I am moving back again to where I came from, even if this means I have to abandon my home country. Having said this, I do not want to live in a place that is clearly moving into Dictatorship, that is utterly law-less, that hasn’t got morals anymore and that does not go anywhere in a hurry. I am done here! I am so sad for my beautiful country, but freedom and justice and effective government are more important to me then beauty.

What are you all going on and on about? First of all, why is this on DNO? DNO, seems you looking to rile people up with every tidbit you get your hands on. The Prime Minister’s swearing in ceremony had the same rules. Why is it a problem for the Leader of the Opposition? Is this something to make any noise about, DNO?

I used to enjoy reading your articles but right now, it seems like every bit of news is twisted to place the government and the country in a bad light. Do you think that this strategy will benefit the country? Do you imagine that it will improve our standard of living, improve our tourism sector, improve the confidence of our young people and our state of mind? Many of our citizens love the DLP and love our country. It’s a democratic choice. It does not make them stupid, or ignorant, or dumminicans or whatever degrading adjectives that is heaped upon Dominicans on your site everyday. I do not appreciate your constant efforts to make Dominica look bad. You not hurting the PM my friend. He will not be PM forever, You are hurting me and my children and my friends and my family. I humbly ask that you return to the objectivity that we all used to enjoy on DNO, the objectivity that made DNO the best online news source in Dominica. Please. I’m looking forward to improvement in the new year.

you need to think before you post, there are people who voted for the opposition to them this is important. What so ever the opposition does is important to this country is because of the opposition we are a democratic state although Skerrit is meticulously trying to change this. The opposition motivates the government and I know you all know if there was no opposition not even the little all you getting there you all would get. So there’s the big importance for you.

Interesting that so much money was spent on the State house and that there is no other appropriate room to accommodate more than 10 people or so..and we are talking about a facility that also supposedly is used for hosting events and conferences. The ruling party uses the state facilities to the max, and then sensors the opposition activities through selective media invited…The reason of “space constraints ” sounds a bit too convenient if not shameful.

  22. December 23, 2014

Dominica is too full of BS and this insult should not be taken lightly. This government is doing all it can to suppress the enormous amount of popular support that exists on the ground for the United Workers Party. They need to provide a breakdown of the space constraints that exist. Simply saying so does not make it so. Did they not know this event was to take place? What other events are happening at the same time?

“the popular votes went t to the UWP Team Dominica”. Are you saying that the DLP received about 16,999 and less votes to the UWP’s 17,000 plus votes? Is that the argument you are trying to raise about popular votes and who received popular votes? Please explain yourself. Are you suggesting that those individuals who voted for DLP are less Dominicans than those who voted UWP and that their voice ought not to be heard? Your nonsense aside. The DLP received in excess of 23,000 votes. Six Thousand more votes than the UWP’ 17,000 or thereabout. Are you at all suggesting that the DLP was able to bring in some 6,000 plus voters from the diaspora into Dominica that was so effective it was able to overhaul the votes that the UWP received? Is that your argument “patriot”. Where were these people housed. When did they arrive and left. 6,000 peopleinto the Dominican economy/neighbourhood is a lot of people. They cannot be hidden anywhere. In the absence of proper, not emotionally driven by sour election losers your argument must be flushed

Sometimes I’m ashamed to say that I’m Dominican particularly when people like you claim to share my nationality. Lennox will decide to take his oath of office because he isn’t doing it for himself, he’s doing it for the people that he represents. It shows that he’s selfless. and has the interest of his constituents and Dominicans at heart. If he had decided that he was declining to partake in that activity, you would have said that his actions are unpatriotic and divisive. It’s very difficult to please people like you.

Do you think it’s alright for the PM to have a multitude of people attend his inauguration but have a limit on the number of people who are allowed to attend the inauguration of the opposition ? Mr. Linton should consider himself lucky that the ceremony was not held in the President’s parking lot. Linton must be fooling himself if he thought Savarin had not heard when he said should he become Prime Minister, the President Palace would become a Tourist Museum where Dominica’s Tourism products would be displayed. What he was telling Savarin was, should he not resign as President, he would ,have to reside at his own house not at the $27 million palace. When I heard the piece of sarcasm thrown at Mr. Linton by Skeritt concerning the swearing-in ceremony, I knew he was going to be put under heavy manners. It would appear, the Olive Branch which was offered by Skeritt a few weeks ago has withered before the new year has began.

Terrible is to you what it is. Please do not attempt to speak for us all. There will always be divergent views on what constitutes development. As well, the question of what to prioritize in the name of progress always has its supporters and naysayers. We’ve fought this battle over and above that which we needed to. The State House is here to stay. Enjoy its functionality and the aura that it brings us a sovereign nation.

You guys remind me of the Republicans in the US. Tear down, block, refuse to finance, cannibalize, indeed seek to criminalize everything this Negro in the White House attempts to do.

To all the people who did and continue to oppose the building of the State House, what do you all propose if and when the UWP finally gains the mantle of control? Will you guys tear down the State House?

Some of these guys are so petty when they taste power, it is not funny. And then he stands upo and talk about joining hands to build the country.

Mr. Skerrit, I have news for you. Before people can follow you they have to first believe you. You must have credibility. These actions point to a person who has none.

  50. December 23, 2014

Who would have thought Mr.Linton would’ve sworn in at this State house,i was critical as well to built this State house anyway it doesn’t matter those criticize to built this State house it belong to all of us.27million dollars it could’ve spent to transform the capital our city is in a mess it doesn’t attract tourist to come back our shores.

DahMan you know the $27M was not only for the State House right? The problem with you people is you are quick to believe all negatives against Dominica without even seeking the correct answers, however whenever you pass by the State House you will notice 2 other big buildings one is the Electoral Commission and other Commission Offices and the other is other Government Offices that were rented out thus saving the government most needed cash.

      • December 23, 2014

@joe, My agreement is the cost of these buildings would have been insufficient funds to build sidewalks, grainage in Roseau, you guys have no proud can you see the state of Roseau, if you guys would like development for Dominica , you guys would’ve been able understood my point.

Ex-police, I can see why you are “ex” and not “current” according to your comment because you could not possibly be so foolish and non-observant.
The public and the media was NOT invited to the swearing in of the PM. What was posted online was footage taken by GIS – Government Information Service. Did you see anywhere that the public was invited or even allowed in the state house? Perhaps, in error, you mistook the swearing in of the CABINET

The public and the media was NOT invited to the swearing in of the PM. What was posted online was footage taken by GIS – Government Information Service. Did you see anywhere that the public was invited or even allowed in the state house? If the public was allowed, trust me, there would have been traffic jam in Roseau because Victoria Street and the grounds of the state house cannot hold the massive crowd which would have attended. Perhaps, in error, you mistook the swearing in of the CABINET for the swearing in of the PM. The public WAS INVITED to the swearing in of the cabinet at the STADIUM….
For an ex-policer, you have no level of observation whatsoever, do you or are you just plain malicious?

So your idea is what? That the Leader of the Opposition must be afforded the same access to the trappings of power as the leader of the country? What the? What world are we living in? Or is it because it is Skeritt? All democracies we know, the opposition never receive the same vaunted position as those whom the electorate, through their collective will, chose to lead them. It is just a natural consequence of the democratic process.

And just to get a little petty while at it, wasn’t this the same man who spent months, years even, vilifying the building of this same structure. Mr. Linton did not only condemn the building as ill-conceived given the hopeless state of the economy at the time. He chucked it up to blatant corruption.

The vicissitudes of power politics really cause men to act in strange ways. Oh Mr. Lennox Linton, where is thine integrity? Where is your principle? What are your values? Come, come now. You cannot be this wishy-washy now that the real taste of power is so tantalizingly near.

      • December 24, 2014
