UPDATE: Hector John triumphs in Salisbury constituency

Hector John

Hector John, the United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for the Salisbury, Morne Rachette and Coulibistrie constituencies, has officially won back the seat with a margin in excess of 300 votes.

John had previously defeated Dominica Labour Party’s (DLP) Bentley Julian Royer at the December 18, 2009 General Elections.

John secured 772 votes while Royer got 415 votes at today’s bi-election.

There were 11 rejected ballots.

Hon. parl rep, elected member, Hector spags John all through out your campaing you have been making it known that salisbury is an independent community I want you to take some time and visit the homes of the villagers who live on the flat, salisbury central and take a very very very good look at their living conditions and after you’ve done so, you will decide whether salisbury people are very independent or not. The boys on the block just smoking the sensesemenia and cursing each other, the young women just gossiping each other while hatian nationals go out to the plantations of our parents and work the land .. Thank God for Skerro , enabling them to acquire revenue which they send back to their families around the world.. are we truely ahead??? are we truely independent??? research that for me mr parl rep and instead of showing another documentary of the orriental countries formulate a documentary on how WE the young generation of salisbury have failed our elders and have not kept up to their legacy of hard work and determination. Thus, keeping us behind!!

it is so sad to see how low some men who clame to be of integrity and statue can stoop. the uwp has been crying down on the leaders of the catholic church. Even the pope all the way in the vatican!! and attempting to destroy the reputation of the church especially the uwp member for salisbury. and during the by-election norris prevost was attending mornin masses both at salisbury and coulibistri day in day out even begging th epriest to let him do the readings. What HYPOCRACY at the highest level.. God is awake and not asleep gentlemen so dont try to involve him in your dirty politicing.. Wake up catholic leaders especially our youth leaders we are watching you and ensure that you are not part of the band of hypocrites.. an dnow is the time to defend your church!!!

inspite the fact that mr.hector spags john has been re-elected i must say that he had not convinced me that he will give effective representation. I say so because he has not exhibited true independence. He can not make his own decision. Mr.john was asked over and over by the media as to whether he will be attending the house and he is saying ot us that “my leader has spoken, my leader has spoken!” only people who are controlled and directed by a slave master behave in this manner!!

God is in control. and He has always been and will always be because he alone knows what would have happened if things had been in your favor. I know for a fact that there would be blood shed. th eupites had fetting from the friday night and there was no obstruction but i hope it will remain like this at all times after all we all are making a statement for the sake of democracy!!

COngratulations to you Hon Hector Spags John!! and i firstly want to advise you to take a vacation because you need some time for rest, relaxation and reflection. You have worked extremely hard during this by-election more than that of the general election because you were kept on your p’s and q’s. Too many times we voters of the salisbury constituency are being taken for granted when you and the past parl rep didnot even bother come to our homes requesting our vote and just wake up on election day and believe that our votes was a must.. HELL NO!! Life has never been a bed of roses and it will never be. we all hav to work hard to achieve in life and from now on that willbe the prder of the day.

It is extremely embarrassing for the DLP to waste sate money in calling a by-election in Marrigot and Salisbury, knowing full well they will lose, what is even more embarrassing is the margin they lost by.
They (DLP) have now exposed themselves.

But the question remains, why did the UWP win by a larger margin than during the December elections? Well here are the possible reasons:

    1. Most laborourites are now seeing the light
    2. There were no envelopes with money to bribe people this time
    3. The DLP were unable to bring in people to vote this time around.

I am sure if By-elections are called in all constituencies island wide and these elections are held fairly ie: no overseas voters, clean voters list, ID cards, no bribes, that the DLP will lose most of there seats.

Now all the money Banks dry up, i want to see what all you will do in 4 yrs.

BRAVE PATRIOTIC DOMINICANS HAVE OVERWHELMINGLY DEFEATED THE PRIME MINISTER’S PLANS TO ESTABLISH A ONE-PARTY STATE WITH HIMSELF AS DOMINICA’S FIRST DICTATOR.

On Friday July 9th 2010; the people of Salisbury and Marigot put COUNTRY BEFORE SELF and handed the Skerrit led government a resounding defeat at polls in those two constituencies. Candidates of opposition United Workers Party who had previously been technically denied access to the Parliament by the Speaker of the House; were returned with extended majorities of not less than 300 votes and in one case over 500.

One government supporter was reported to have confirmed that the election was unfair as it had been rigged by the opposition. According to her the opposition UWP had corrupted the process and cheated the DLP out of what should have been a sure victory: A prominent senior counsel is said to be reviewing the matter before filing election petitions at the High Court in Roseau.

I am at lost to understand why a labourite would call the people of Marigot and Salisbury stupid for sticking to thier party. When the freedom party won by a landslide the people of Portsmouth and Grandbay must have been called fools then or i guess were cosider fools for sticking with labour. But then again maybe the people throwing insults now might have voted freedom and called the laborites who they now support fools or they were just to young and now dont know there own history, poor them. In dominica it seems if u dont have my view u are a stupid person, funny, is that itself dumb since we suppose to agree to disagree but then only the smart people can do that

  35. Anonymous
    July 10, 2010

The victories in Marigot and Salisbury are hollow if you look at the numbers.

In Marigot there were 2,376 registered voters. Eddison James got a mere 661, while his opponent won 131 votes. That means only 792 registered voters cast their ballots. More than 50 percent of the registered voters did not vote.

In Salisbury there were 2, 624 registered voters. Hector John won 772 votes, while his opponent received 415 votes. That means 1187 voters cast their ballots in the Salisbury constituency. This also mean more than 50 percent of registered voters did not vote.

One must realize that these two constituencies are UWP strongholds. So what is this low turnout really saying?

It is my opinion that the majority of the UWP voters in these constituencies are disgruntled by the action of the their party (boycott of parliament and so on) and to show their disgust they decided to stay away from the polls. The small number of votes received were from the die hard party supporters who would blindly go wherever their leaders lead them. If that was not the case, where are all their supporters from their so-called strongholds?

does that mean that the people of Marigot and Salisbury was happy with the representation they were getting before?

And does it mean that the Crime Minister Scarit and his speaker was too arrogant to think that they could push down what they want down the throats of Dominicans that rejected them in a first elections and reinforced their choice in a second election?

Yes now get on with the work of the country and stop the victimization. Go Workers.

Congratulations to the people of Salisbury and Marigot for staning their ground and making this powerful statement to this government and to the rest to come. That is , that the poeple have the power in a democracy to decide what it is they will tolerate or not. I don`t think we truly understand the significance of what is happening in our country. Dominicans what this time is telling us is that we should no longer sit and let the government dictate to us whatever they want. We are the ones who put them in this capacity and they should never forget that. They have an obligation to look after our interests and when they don`t then we make them listen with our votes and that is the power of the right to vote. Yes the UWP stayed out of parliament but they did it to make a statement hoping that we were listening. Did we listen dominicans, did we learn anything from the events of the past few months. Some people say that because they stayed out of parliament and bi-lections had to be called, they wasted the country`s money. But do you know that by staying out of parliamnet, they were not receiving any salaries? And that they were not the ones that insisted on calling bi-elections, so don`t blame them for standing up for the rights of the people. Blame the One who has been manipulating the system for the past couple of years, hoping that the brightness of the dimples would be so blinding that we won`t see what he is really up to.

congratulations to Mr.Hector John and to the people of Salisbury you have done well I am very proud. I do believe that the Royer guy could not represent the people of Salisbury at any level just by the stupid comments he made after loosing the bi-election about UWP was pressuring the people that was so not true,

@dominican texas: People what is the big horah about victory. UWP has the seats.Thats their strong hold. Just like possie and south city is are two stong holds of labour. I dont see the big deal.

What I would like to see is Spags become leader of the opposition and rebuild his party. But I dont see james giving that to him even if he is ready to retire. Let the youth man lead the next generation of UWP.

  76. July 9, 2010

now its time for my speech! salisbury never needed labour and will never need labour to move forward!…. we have unity, one of the best coummunity councils in the country and very ambitious and motivated people! no our country can NEVER be backward with people like these because u can clearly see the salisbury people think more forward than ALOT of other communities. they hold their own community events that encourages unity and family togetherness. hmmmmmmmmmm….. i aint even from salisbury but i want to be a part of the celebration…i know for sure mahaut doesnt have the potential salisbury holds…we aint need no representative to move FORWARD as a people in that constituency.

The UWP has scored a major ideological victory, with a concensus of good governance that will put the ruling party in check. It is time now for the opposition to take their rightful place and begin to act like true parlimentarians with their district. We know now that, the next election will defintely be a referandum on the Skerrit goverment.

@Objective: I agree with you one hundred percent. I was totally disappointed when the UWP decided to contest the elections.

Let us do some logical reasoning on this thing here. The UWP decided not to recognize the Labor Party government because according to them the general elections were won by fraud and other illegal means. To show that they did not recognize the government they decided to boycott parliament.

Now, if the government in power is illegitimate, any appointment made by the government, including the position of speaker of the house, is also illegitimate. It would therefore follow that any decisions or rulings made by the speaker of the house is illegitimate.

In contesting the bi-election the UWP in essence is recognizing the rulings of a speaker of the house that was appointed by what they see as an illegitimate government.

From a logical perspective, it makes no sense. From a moral perspective it is devastating.

    July 9, 2010

I think the UWP would have made a bigger statement – in and out of Dominica if they did not contest. The effect of what they want would be greater. I am a disappointed about their having contested under the same strategy. But then like all parties they speak to their inner circle and claim to listen to their constituents.

You cannot vote for a party………something have to be wrong with us for voting for Hector……..I am ashame to say i am from Salisbury. Pray for us …..Skerrit is not a wicked person but if his party turn his back on us we have no one to blame but our ignorant self. Now my wife will understand my point when i say i am not moving back to Salisbury.
