UWP begins preparations for general elections

Political leader of the UWP Edison James
Political leader of the UWP Edison James

The opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has said it is intensifying preparations for the next general elections which is constitutionally due in two years’ time.

A party retreat held on the weekend was described by Political Leader, Edison James, as “the beginning of the intensification of our preparation for governmental operation and action.”

“We are poised to return to government,” he told participants of the retreat. “The current regime is a government in hiding, we are a government in waiting.”

In his speech at the event, James said his remarks were directed to a group of Dominicans who he described as ‘Youth 2000.’ “These are our sons and daughters who will be, by the constitutional date of general elections, between the ages of 18 and 30 years,” he said.

He noted that people in that age group are being targeted because they are not aware of the UWP’s achievements and performance during its reign between 1995 and 2000. “They do not know we built the Delice/Petite Savanne Road, they may not know we built the Grand Bay Secondary School, they may not know we built the Castle Bruce Secondary School and constructed 30 new classes at the Portsmouth Secondary School,” James pointed out.

He went on to say that the group may not know that the UWP built the Concord Primary School, the Jimmit/Warner Road, as well as  the North East Comprehensive School, among others.

He argued that these ‘achievements’ must be highlighted because the Dominica Labour Party would prefer citizens believe that the UWP has made no contribution to the development of the nation. “One stated mission is to kill us as like cockroaches with their shoes and to destroy us with their drones as Obama destroyed Al Queda operatives,” James stated. “But while they focus on destruction, our focus is on building this country and its people.”

James said the UWP’s first order of business is to defeat what he described as “that monster called unemployment.” “Twenty-six percent of unemployment among Youth 2000 spells disaster and we must confront that threat head on,” he said. “It was not so under the past UWP administration, it is not going to be so under a future UWP administration.”

He said the UWP will also concentrate on sound investments in education and training, the productive sectors, economic infrastructure such as an international airport and an international convention center. “All geared at reducing unemployment and poverty,” he noted.

James stated that the UWP will combat crime and violence but will also ‘fight for justice.’ “Justice for example for Mr. GON Emanuel and his wife who have been victims in what appears to be state facilitated injustice,” he noted.

He called for candidates to contest the elections on behalf of the UWP and expressed concerns that the private sector is placing stumbling blocks in the way of employees who are interested in contesting the election for the opposition.

He called on the young people in “Youth 2000” to support the party in the run up to the election.

“Help us to help you earn your own money and restore your independence, your pride and self-worth,” he said.

What UWP did is a history lesson. We are more interested in what they are going to do. Seriously, whether or not I will support them will depend on that but so far we have not seen any concrete plans yet. If they want to keep it secret, fine but I’m not going to vote for a secret party that preaches transparency and certainly not after the present lot.

If there is any politician in Dominica who is capable of articulating and communicating his idea and plans is Edison James. In order to facilitate biases people rather not listen and are led by emotions. Is that how we want to build a better Dominica by continuing ths jungle like approach to interaction.
I believe that Edison has on numerous occasions dealt with te real issues that we ace in Dominica that is unemployment,te lack of a productive and stainable economy, Agriculture, marketing strategy, tourism. If we all remove the artisan hat we will all agree that we are seriously Underperforming in te areas mentioned.
The element of listening is vital to efficient communication. Instead of babbling why don’t we listen. In this era we ought not to allw politicians to suppress the hardcore reality with loud music and Siwo. In my own assessment our people are like toddlers – shake a bunch of keys, “shack shack’ , clapping etc.

We are supposedly a mre enlightened people yet here is Edison James articulating the issues from the sde of the opposition and we ave a sitting government who is continently running fom issues relating to growth drivers. In every civilized society people would want to at least listen to a debate or discussion between SKERRIT and Edison on the matters that are off importance. I am stiill baffled that educated men like Parry Bellot , Arthey Aaron and others would seek to discourage such a noble and necessary requirement of a democratic electoral system. So it is reasonable to assume that there is a willful and deliberate effort by some to perpetuate the ignorance and primitive behavioral culture of te 1960’s only to fulfill their own selfish motives. Yet we alk about coming together to build a ation.
In 2010 the PM emphasized the need to have open dialogue but the very same speech writters are discouraging open dialogue between the encumbrance and the opposition. Pierre Charles was bold enough to chastise Dominicans fr the brant delay of ignorance. I am sure that Pierro or Rosie would be more than willing to ignore the unnecessary bobbing and weaving to sit Dwn and do a tet a tet discussion with Edison James on matters that are critical to our development.
Reading through the comments and I see and hear the clambering of distractive noises -the sound of empty barrels controlled by devious and selfish political party operatives. I see people who are so programmed that once that camaign buzz comes on these people put on their Red or Blue T- shrt whether or not the t-shrt is clean , washed out or even stinks. They care nt whether the T-shirt. Causes rash or embarrassment.

I try to be analytical Not Partisan.in my humble assessment I have seen a country tat has been driven into poverty and misdirection. It is easy to blae the politicians and knowing that my comment will be misconstrued or taken as an attack on the current administration I will say that the politicians in government are lately responsible however we te people of Dominica are our biggest enemy.instead of standing up for our country we prefer defend and elevate dishonest politicians – we totally ignore the relevance of te process , the burning issues, the bread and butter elements. Instead we resort to things that are immaterial ; the very things that have allowed s to fall to the bottom off te bucket.
If we won’t respect ourselves te politicians won’t. If we won’t act like educated people te politicians and their special interest friends will treat us like fools.

I was all excited about voting in the last election for the UWP because of their previous achievements; but could not pull myself to vote as the party failed to convince of a proper development plan for our country.

I am optimistic that they will present a plan to address the issues. I think most people are very much aware of the shortcomings of the present administration so while they should be highlighted a lot more emphasis should be place on the party’s plan moving forward. I hope to hear nothing less than a 70:30 ratio re uwp forward plan:dlp shortcomings.

    April 11, 2013

The fact that there is preparation necessary shows that the opposition is underperforming and failing their supporters. I have been asking for many years, what are the policies they have in place to take dominica forward. Preparation should not be needed for people to know how you intend to take dominica forward. It should be continuous development of policies. Always a next step, a building block, an amendment to current plans, not a grand plan. I am however happy that they are planning because we need an effective opposition. The government can flex its muscles in any direction because the opposition is in disarray. I hope they just let go of the skerrit bashing once and for all and work on their policies.

UPP, I will win the Wesley constituencies for you and take on the IT portfolio. I can guarantee you at least 5000 jobs in that area within the first 3 years.

Call centers, think tank, Software development companies, IT services companies, card processing companies, IT consultancy, Education both in person and online (research Moodle) and the list goes on. Of course not forgetting the application of IT in agriculture science, more specifically AI.

All those bush medicines we have, we can build software that will make that information available to the world using AI as an alternative to modern pharmacy, where a persons can access a site developed by us in Da, provide information and get a possible diagnosis along with the possible medications both bush medicine and those from the pharmacy.

This will make us a tourist site for natural, herbal healing. Think of the spin off to the economy, the grand mothers can and would become self sufficient and self employed.

We have a very competitive work force. They are very educated and not as half as expensive as the majority of the other Caribbean countries.

The labor party does not want that, why? The red clinic, if you need them for food, you will always vote for them.

That just confirms how blind you are Mr. James. Labour Party is a party in hiding? For your information This party is standing right in front of you in plain view and performing magnificently. Your problem is, if you want to be truthful, your party can not live up to the standard of the DLP that is why you have taken up the position to find and fight whatever you all perceive to be corruption in government. That is the only way you all believe you will stand a chance. DLP is truly a superior party and better for the country.

It is not by accident or through sheer arrogance that some persons are calling Dominicans stupid. In every other country in the eastern Caribbean, the citizens vote their politicians out of or into office based on non performance or issues of national importance. However in Dominica, the populace vote them in because of love. No consideration is given to non performance, incompetence or malfeasance; on the contrary, they seem to revel in just such negative behaviour.
A man makes a statement and rather than examine the statement persons come here making all kind of asinine statements. Some even follow the lead of an ignorant politician and asks the man to go throw stones in the sea, can you believe this? Others, disguise their stupidity and refusal to take a stance against wrong behind the veil of leadership. To those I say the party has decided that in the circumstances Mr. James is the most qualified and competent individual to lead the party, so please look beyond this and do what you know to be right.

The words have been spoken. Let the real action continue on the ground. Take note of the many DLP organized community fetes in Bath Estate, Point Michel, Mahaut and Grand bay, sponsored by the Mayor, Parl. Reps and DLP operatives. The DLP is aggressively on the move doing whatever it has to do to win all 21 seats.

Elections may be constitutionally due in 2014 but it seems more imminent in the DLP’s reality. The opposition must unify its leadership structure and paint a single, dominant, and confident political face moving forward on the ground- keeping the people politically warm and informed.

In spite of the many failures of the DLP, like Appeal Court Judge Baptiste recently said, the flaws notwithstanding- the other side will present a strong, albeit incoherent lie to the people and the opposition will have its work cut out for it whenever elections are called.

The UWP must not be poised to return to government per se. The focus must be on defeating the DLP, recognizing its limited resources rather than thinking of being in government at this juncture. The latter will be the product of the former. Moreover, there is no need to be too greedy like the DLP; a simple one seat majority is enough to redirect our national priorities.
Let us not be fooled. The DLP government is not in hiding. This is boldface, arrogant and badly wounded government that will do whatever it has to do to win at the polls, if it means exterminating its legitimate political opponents as terrorists. It has already declared that much and it will go after anyone who is in hiding.

Mr. James focus on the youth is a good strategy. However, the party must engage and employ the youth to take the message of hope to the youth where they socialize (on the courts, through music and through social media in cyber land). The message must be delivered in a way that is palatable to the youth and in a manner that they can receive and accept it.

For instance, there must be more emphasis on youth issues presented by youth representatives on the Thursday evening radio programme. The hosts should introduce various segments dedicated to the youth, the women, the businessmen, the hoteliers, farmers; –perhaps a 10 minutes slot for voices of the youth on the street, the farmers in the field, the retailers in the community shops etc. Allow the youth, farmers, and nurses, teachers to express their concerns in their own words and in their own environment.

The party cannot simply go traditional with the same old campaign strategy. That will fail as it has done in the last two elections. We are no longer in 1988. There must be a lot of thinking outside the traditional campaign mold, while keeping it civil and lawful but exciting and successful. The hard facts and burning issues of corruption, unemployment, lack of integrity etc will not be sufficient when faced with the millions from passport sales and from donations from far away lands in the new culture of dependence and freeness.

Best wishes to the opposition forces. May our young democracy flourish. God bless Dominica.

    Respectfully
    Roseau Valley

“Mr. James can you please spell out your foreign policy plans. If you were to be elected would you sever ties with china, Venezuela, morocco etc.”

I am sick to my stomach; of more than seventy comments I read, not a single one of the comments made any sense, and so I need to ask: are there no intelligent people left in our country?

Could it be that if there are any intelligent people left they are just not interested in the brand of politics we offer on Dominica?

Poor English, combined with stupid comments dominates; nothing said makes any political sense, one idiot speaks about the elevation of some part of a road, which he/she claims, is hard for busses, and trucks, to negotiate, and blames the elevation of the road on a former government!

    I find that so stupid.

In the first place Edison James I am sure did not cut and construct, that portion of the road, therefore if someone is to be held accountable for poor construction, and planing of the project, the blame should be on the shoulders of the people who were involved directly in the construction of the road.

There is another problem which must considered, and that is the terrain of that area of the country, one should appreciate they were able to get a road through. And although I do not wish to get too political about it, and have no intention of trying to influence any vote on either side of the issue, one need to be reminded that the UWP has accomplished more in less than five years than some government has accomplished in almost twenty-years!

If I was ask between Edison, and Skerrit, which of the two accomplished more, I would probably say they both have accomplished about the same amount, giving a slight edge or advantage to Skerrit, with an explanation; which would state he has held power longer than James, therefore it is expected that his record will show he accomplished more.

In any event all the claims Edison James made regarding the accomplishment of his party are all true, and correct; if his program was not derailed by the combined forces led my Athie Martin, Dominica would have an International Airport operating this day in our country.

Mind you I was in Dominica listening to a meeting in Wesley, which was held at four corners, near the police station, when the idea was conceived in Athie’s head when he said “from here I am going to see if I can get the opposing party’s to come together and defeat the UWP.”

He succeeded, thus after the election, there was no actual majority winner, hence the coalition government was born.

Now their first order of business was to shut down the construction of the International Airport which was actually in the first phase of development. They claimed that Dominica could not afford one, and based on Gonzalez of St. Vincent, and Bertrand of Trinidad, Dominica would be better off if we installed landing lights at Melville Hall Airport.

Finally one of the stupidest comments of all is in the quote above I do not if Dominica Government does not have any domestic policy, what the heck foreign policy we have I wish I could write forever on this, if I do I doubt that it will be approve if it is too long.

He who fight and run away will live to fight another day!

As an independent voter it’s in my interest to know if Mr. James would be friends with these countries. My reason for asking is clear and simple, because all UWP has been doing is bashing the Chinese, bashing Chavez, even after the death of the man, they was rejoicing. Also it’s not a secret that the UWP and the Taiwanese are friends so if elected would we move to Taiwan. UWP supporters don’t know how to win votes; don’t know how to gain support my educating the massive.

      • April 11, 2013

Perhaps if you simply ask if he would sever diplomatic relations with some particular country, I would have overlooked the question, because as it stand Dominica government does not have any foreign policy!

My definition of foreign policy would mean: matters to do with international relations, and with the interests of the home country in foreign countries; and the policy of a sovereign state in its interactions with other sovereign state.

Our governments try to run around the world signing all sorts of documents claiming to have established diplomatic relations with countries which has no say in world affairs the same as Dominica. They say we are in the United Nations however we are there only as a token; we cannot vote on anything which is tabled, hence our presence there is considered irrelevant.

When our prime ministers say they have established diplomatic relations with a country, the purpose is to solicit handouts, which when received serves no significant purpose.

How many of these countries you hear Dominica have established such relationship with has established a consulate or embassy in Dominica?

        Perhaps Venezuela, and perhaps China.

All the rest of our friends are in the same boat as Dominica, poor as dirt!

We say we have established diplomatic relations with China, at a very heavy cost. One of the price we pay to be so called friends with China is to be obedient to China, that is what the Chines demand!

Have you ever heard of the term ” the one China policy?”

Well that means total allegiance and obedience to China; in that case we have relinquished our sovereignty to a foreign power, and a communist foreign power at that; that may be the only foreign policy our government has at this time.

Have you noticed that China seems to have a base in Dominica, in that any assistance they give to our country which involves money, the work is done by imported Chines from China, they spend very little money from their pocket in our grocery shops, they raise their pigs for meat, they plunder our wild life, and rivers too.

I am told whereas it is illegal for Dominicans hunt at a certain time of the year, the Chines are not prohibited from hunting in the off season.

That is a very costly price to pay diplomatic friendship with any country!

It is interesting to note whatever they spend in Dominica, the people, the taxpayers will eventually have to pay it back.

Now more than four years ago an Chines official told this present government that the only time Dominica will begin to make some progress, is when we build an International Airport.

My question here is how come they have not suggested they would finance it.

They loan billions to the great United States of America, but for our loyalty, they hand us peanut change, and the crumb from the bread the devil leaves!

Yeh we are about to go into another election campaign mode where the significant issues are immaterial. People are getting hyped only to go to rallies and motorcades and then note for a shoot of rum, 5 sheets of ply, $1500 here and $50 there.
Of the many people who shouted red is bread or better of dead if not red what question do you ponder upon. Are you satisfied with the bread and are you better off now. Note I can’t ask a non-red supporter the very same question.
As for me I have been beaten twice and recognize scanners, bull ” sheeeeeters”, inefficiency , selfishness and greed. Unfortunately all we have posing as leaders are the greedy, greedier, sorry to say but that includes thieves, scum bags, pathological liars, leeches and vulchers. As a responsible citizen I must choose one and it may just be the greedy.
The greedy must however convince me that the liars, thieves, vultures and fire bombers will be prosecuted who and wherever they are.

Mr.James tried something. He tried to play dead to see what kind of funeral he will get. Obviously, it is clear that he got less than an official funeral. he was burined anyway.

I believe what Mr. James and his party tried to do is to see what reaction the people would give if he was to lead his party into the next gheneral elections. It is cleasr that Lenox Linton is a more popular person than Mr. james and so supporters of the UWP are calling for him. Mr. James can leave his party in the hands of a man from Marigot by stepping aside and allowing Lewnnox to run for Marigot as political leader of the UWP. With Eddo at his side, Lennox wil win even if with a smaller majority, but he will win. UWP cannot win enough seats to form the government, but what will happen, Lennox will replace the dead meat we preswently have as Opposition Leader and frustrate the government going into a fourth successive term. That makes sense to me. Surprisingly, no one mentioned Spaggs as a potential PM, buthe is Opposition Leader (de facto PM in waiting anyway). Eddo that was free advise.

  43. I want my votes back
    April 10, 2013

For the past 20 years, including the last election, I supported and voted DLP and to be honest with you I am disappointed. When I think of where Dominica was 15 years ago, under workers and where we are today, I must admit I failed my country. But don’t be too hard on me. I was impressed by the vision of Rosie and I just wanted to give him a chance although, it was clear that workers were really working and DA was on the way up. Also, the corruption message was so well enveloped by DLP and some DFP that if you did not buy into it you were a fool. Later I found out that I was really fooled because I bought into some big lies! When Rosie died, I continued to vote DLP for two reasons: 1. I was ashamed to go back to my old vomit knowing how much I campaingned 2.I wanted to give the young man a reasonable chance. Oh how I regret the latter!
Today, can clearly see vision in what Mr. James had to say and come next election God’s willing, I will not allow my political pride and what people will say to keep me away from workers. I want to see a better future for my children and quite clearly this administration has no kind of vision or future painted. We are like clouds of doom and that’s frightening. So come next election, for the first time, you will hear me on the streets dressed in blue, shouting…”WORKERS”

  44. April 10, 2013

Its rather sad that Dominicans no longer have a heart and love for country. The truth means nothing. Perception is reality and propaganda is now proper. I am frustrated how we have come. King spider said we going down slowly. I think we bettered that since we are going down a stiff-cocked valley of destruction and evil is taking precedence over good.

The government and the opposition are the same thing in this big money deceptive game of politricks. Corruption is part of the culture of our politics on both sides this is apparent. Where I stand on my humble throne in Ghana I see that our country has made some progress but more needs to be done. I hope to return to Dominica in quick time to my area in One Mile to return to a paradise I missed.

It appears that The government is still very popular and is even getting stronger by the day. I was out of state for 6 years but was shocked at the level of progress. I guess listening on the net is quite different from being at home.

Its sad how workers have come down so low. They need new blood and new dynamic leadership. This old uwp guard will not make it at all. All over Da seems to be labour labor and more labour.
Some people in UWP just have to resign.

Agriculture a winner? Why then is Geest contemplating not loading bananas in Dominica anymore because can’t even produce our allottted quota? And talking about bananas. Have you seen the well orgainised acres of plantations in Guadeloupe and Martinique, who have free access to the European market and flourish, despite higher labour costs? Have you seen any shortage of produce in the neighbouring islands that they can import from the U.S.A. at more consistent quality standards and lower prices than what we can supply? Today I was looking at miserly tomatoes in one of our supermarkets, coming from the U.S.A., because we can not produce enough ourselves plus the prices are crazy! We can’t even produce enough coffee to keep Bello’s small operation going, not to mention hot peppers. And all this despite the fact that our farmers are tax excempt. Let’s be realistic. I wish it were different but it isn’t.

You should have asked for it to be taken down but pride would not allow it. The humility would have served you well, then and now.
As much as I can’t stomach the present regime I would be reluctant to vote UWP with Mr. James in charge.

In that address alone Eddie has signalled to soem of the advisors to the opposition coalition that they can go “to go to hell. He wants an international airport by any means necessary. The premier advisor to his mentor and protege/advisor, Athie is dead agaisnt an international airport. Eddie is Gong Ho for an international airport. Confusion already? Or has Eddie told Athie and co. that they are not wanted in the UWP even if they speak volumes 24-7 agaisnt Skerro on Q? Eddie does not forget.

Not sure why Mr.James is wasting his time with Dominicans, has he not learnt what type of People Dominicans are…jeez come on…

Take a look around, they don’t want a International Airport, They not interested with Integrity in Office,They love being unemployed and Poor,They Could care less if the Fumes or Gases affect their Health,They adore the “Red Clinic” as the Best Weapon of growth in Dominica, They Dont Care if “Black Ants” get’s rid of them.

So how you expect to change that type of Culture Tell me..Dominicans are not winners as a Nation They Loved being Hammered with that hardship Aspect….-Ignorance-points to Caribbean Island Of Dominica..

    April 10, 2013

That’s it Mr James….thats what we the youth of this country want to hear. We want to plans and programs not about SKERRIT!! Stop concentrating on Skerrit and lets get the ball rolling and sensitize the people on what your plans are for the future of Dominica. Come with a way forward to get Dominica moving. Don’t sleep on yourselves, start talking now. Start having discussions in different villages/communities and tell us what you plan for our country. That’s the only way you can get Skerrit out because that’s what the masses want to hear. We are tired of the skerrit talk that Linton doing, let’s get some action now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Someone in the Know
      April 10, 2013

The coalitiion agaisnt PM Skerrit is very shaky, leaking, tossed on the high seas and perhaps has ran aground. Yesterday, Jno. Finn, one of the patriots, writing from Washington DC enjoined on the present UWP leadership (Eddie and Ron) to step aside and give Thompson Fontaine, another Washington based patriot, a chance to lead an assembled opposition agaisnt Skerrit. Note too that some time ago Mr. Michael Astaphans, the interim political leader made a public statement suggesting that what he calls the DFP (Freedom Party) will not go in a coalition ever again – not after the DFP’s experience with Labour in the 2000 elections. Today Eddie is tying his waist to run once again for election as political leader and PM of this country. He is hell bent on pursuing a development program (international airport) that some of his more recognized advisors (Athie) have said is not necessary. Whither goest the alternative to Skerrit. You know Skerrit has always said that the best strategy the UWP can employ to keep his DLP in power is to continue with Eddison James as leade of UWP with Lennox Linton his shadow as the premier PR person for the party – UWP. He is saying the rightthings you know. Just consider what Eddie brings to the table against a maruading, all conquering Skerro

      • April 10, 2013

Lennox is to stay where he is to bring all those who are not pulling his/her weight while in Govt or private sector I cant see any other person walking in his shose their are others in the WUP who can do the PR job.
Between you and me is the type of program that is hear to stay with Linton as the captain

      • Someone in the Know
        April 12, 2013

I agree with “river”, Lennox is here to stay doing what he does best – talk, talk and more talk on a Sunday afternoon. But the truth is the only real encouragement he has is the hope (espwa mal papaye)that one day ‘canka day” the UWP will win the government and he wil be given a ministerial portfolio by way of the Senate and he will ocntinue to go after Skerro without let. That is just his HOPE

The Present mindset of Dominica now, they are not Citizens who vote and reflect on issues and Policies, so it’s gonna be extremely hard to pull Eight seats To gain eleven to win the elections..

If Dominicans were thinkers and wanted a change They Would do less talking on the radio.

They refuse to make their presence felt claiming Being victimised etc…once they speak that Language means they still will vote Labour..

The Opposition along can’t do it..NGO’s Unions And Other Policy and Profile groups have to come On Board to effect a change in Regime..

Labour will be very hard to defeat via the Polls
As they have the Armed forces and other personal To ensure the get the win..

So honestly the election outcome 16-5 in Favour Of Labour

    • Anonymous
      April 10, 2013

It is always suggested that Dominicans are stupid because they don’t vote on issues. If so, then the opposition leaders must be stupid as well that they can’t convince stupid Dominicans to vote them while another/labour party can. All party have or should have their strategy to win. That does not necessarily mean everything they say is the truth or that they can implement, rather the one with the best stratergy to catch the people. Don’t come call the people foolish after, when they could be fooled either way.

Mr. James if you seriously want the UWP to win the next elections you should pass on the leadership to someone new. What about Dr. Thompson Fontaine? a sure winner in Grand Fond and someone who will for sure canvass DLP supporters who are disenchanted with their party. Be honest to yourself Mr James you had your time you wasted it by calling early elections. We the UWP supporters are tired of talk cheap talk (pawol enitil), we want to win elections to bring Dominica back and track.

He is doing it extremely bad, plunging the country into poverty at the same time. The State Malace was ill conceived at a time when the country is so dam poor. You can make a bid to sit in it, i can, Eddison can and every other Dominican.
