UWP has big plans for Roseau

A plan for a modern city for Dominica is high on the agenda for the Opposition United Workers Party (UWP).

That’s according to UWP hopeful for the Roseau central, Joseph Isaac.

He made the remarks at a public meeting in Lagon on Thursday night to end a series of constituency meetings across the island.

He said a youth village on High Street, a business incubator for housing 100 businesses as well as a focus on sports is part of their plans for Roseau if elected into office.

“This involves creating a modern parking facility, putting solar street lights, improving the side-walks, resurfacing the entire Roseau city and increasing drainage,” he said.

Isaac said the UWP will also focus on drug rehabilitation in the city

“We are also going to embark on a drug rehabilitation project where our people are suffering from the abuse of drugs we can save them,” he stated, adding that such people could become productive citizens.

He mentioned that the UWP wants to construct a water park in the Botanic gardens that could become a tourism heritage site.

“We want a state of the art facility where tourists can come and visit and also locals can come and slide and you have a big aquarium with fish and it becomes a tourism heritage place,” Isaac stated.

In addition he said the party plans on embarking on a housing transformation project where assistance will be given to people who are struggling to build or improve their facilities in the city or to get it off the ground, so that the “poor people can have some major investment in the city.”

The UWP is also proposing a vendors’ arcade which will transform Roseau into a modern town, according to Isaac.

I disagree with the idea of slides at the Botanical Gardens. Introducing fish tanks with tropical fish is not a bad idea at all.
The environmental zealots always forget that part of what we cherish and hold close to our heart was actually created by humans. Athie led a court battle to dismantle the stone wall that was rebuilt using the same stones to enlarge the road and side walk. That was a stupid fight.
Adding substance abuse rehabilitation to our island is critical for its continued existence and prosperity.
But all of these ideas will fail if we are unable to efficiently transport people in and out of Dominica. In other words, no International Airport, no progress!!

All those guys makes Pappy look like a genius. When I used to listen to pappy campaign I used to think if he get a bird brain he would fly backwards” but I owe pappy an apology. Every politician is reading from Pappy`s script. I usually wonder with all those who a rushing to the alter to as they say help do the will of the people’. if we the people would offer all of them an I.0.U. until all their plans for Dominica materialized. I wonder how many of them would put their hands up and be willing to serve we the people. My opinion not one would come forward. Therefor I voting Pappy for “PM” he is the only one with a vision for Dominica.

People it can be done. We can modernize Dominica, that includes Portsmouth, Roseau, Marigot Mahaut wherever, all it takes is commitment from those in power and those in opposition as well. With a concrete and well thought out plan, financing is always available. It would not cost that much to fix Dominica.

We should also focus on transforming the entire country not only Roseau. one way to increase development would be to attract additional universities such as Ross. Imagine the level of development lets say on the east coast of DA if we attracted another university or technical school of the same size or bigger than Ross and placed that school on the eastern side of the island.

Look at the level of development around Ross University, it should be our goal as a country to recreate that same level of development all around the nature island. The ball is in our court (Govt. Citizens. etc.) to make it happen.

World Rivers Day as designated by the United Nations in 2005, will again be observed on the last Sunday of September (Sun. 28). Dominicans are being invited to join millions of people from over 60 Countries to observe the DAY (WRD) under the theme: “Show us your River and we will tell the World who you are”. In my humble opinion, I do believe that in any future plans for the development of the City of Roseau, the Roseau River must be taken into consideration. Our generous and merciful God is counting on us.

I agreewith you totally about taking care of our rivers Fr. cuffy but i will add that it is our collective responsibility we tout and advertise dominica as the nature isle with so much litter in our rivers especially the roseau river , across the island, in ravines and our beaches I do agree that dominica is a nature Island but are dominicans nature loving in this regard ? the littering of the island is very appalling indeed.

We must think of a Dominica Rivers month. I agree it is our collective and national responsibility to take care of our rivers, our environment, in the same way we take care of our homes. Dominica is our home.
We must discontinue the bad habit of throwing rubbish in our rivers. To maintain a clean Nature Island, no river should be treated as a dump site.

More words, more popiyage , more pantomime. There is an old saying “if you love me show me, do not tell me.” Good ideas I must say , but if you can do all those things that you promise in your campaign DO at least one thing to show that you are capable.
As far as I can notice , the new uwp DAAS team is full of empty campaign promises. Just politics as usual to seduce the electorate.
They have certainly made next election an interesting and a challenging one. Will we be a two party state? In which direction will the political pendulum swing.

Team UWP is in complete disarray. Each member has his own plans. One plan for Mahaut (industrial center); one plan for Marigot (green economics and merchant port); one plan for Roseau (streets and water park). One would think that these people might have at least consulted with Dr Fontaine before treating the public to this outrageous mockery.

DA’s case is sad so much nonsense is being considered and discussed. There are so many Phd’s etc in this little land.
Bush doctors are a plenty we know that. Everyone on island has an opinion and would all claim they are entitled to theirs .
The countless speakeasies are open universities.Sad to listen to the BS discuused nightly.
But, the guys in Blue are taking too far and am beginning to wonder if this country has been transformed to a large asylum with so many lunatics saying what they want, doing what they want.
Our P.M crazily says no constitiution no law can stop him and goes on to carry it out and no dog barked.
Prior to that he blamed the failure to pay taxes on his land transfers on Milli vanilli blame it on the rain this time it was on easy door. We allowed him to get away so he said no law/constitution can stop him and he is moving steadfastly along.
A modest house or home in his hometown in the tune of $400K EC turns out to be $2million plus. Then came the Villas scandal built with crab money according to the chim from the laundryMart. WE know the other scandals that followed and those to come some of us may already know seeing how bright and the deja vu powers in most D/cans.
As if the Gov’t was not full of it enough the opposition the former solid Team of Eddison James now LL have replaced Earl Instru Williams the famous fountaine designer and fugitive with Isaac of cacoa well who has just taken the cake re comedy by suggesting putting slides and fish tanks/aquriums in the botanical Gardens,
It is clear to all that this clown is a man of arts not science.
The Gardens BOTANICAL has been know for it plants /trees and agricultural mainly botanical in nature now Isaacs wants to introduce fish and slides. What was Isaacs thinking his childhood days of merry go round? Knowing Isaac morso pie as well as I do Merry go round was broken down before he was of age to play there. To have played there he would have had to be born in the late 50’s but he was not born until the 70’s.
LL hold the lesh on this feller small face Isaacs don’t all him to go wild and show the nation what he really is or simple put allow him to continue mix his dough and trying little businesses in the hope they survive under this administration after elections.
Remember greedy say he want all the seats lol!
I am more convinced each passing day this country has been transformed into an asylum over the last 30 yrs .I anyone is not convince is because of their obvious mental status. A mentally ill individual cannot be convinced. Look at the administration the opposition the clergy, the police, customs, civil service only mondes fou.

We have one man trying to rule a country for 20 years with the same ideas. The people are not free to speak out their minds, if they do ,they are penalized. Lonnox and the new uwp DAAS team are sure to give Dominicans 10,000 jobs in three years and everyone will have a million dollar house with a two car garage.
He will develop the city of Roseau, Portsmouth and Marigot and the whole of Dominica to become an MDC (most development nation)
After all he has received a magic wand from the non profit DAAS people who only want to be Presidents. maybe they wuill take turns. ADACADABRA ! Just you wait.

Skeritt has made many political mistakes, but the mistake that will hunt him for the rest of his life was when he asked Mr. Lennox Linton to enter the political race. Mr. Lennox Linton has achieved a lot since he became leader of UWP Team Dominica. In my opinion, his best achievement so far is the formation of the UWP WEBSITE. I am not sure Skeritt has a solution for the wizardry of Mr. Linton, and so, he must be having sleepless nights. Not very often a man appears on an island like Dominica with that great talent, gift and passion for succeeding. Fortunately, he arrived when Dominica needed a leader badly. Skeritt has tried his best, unfortunately, he cannot fight the divine power of God, like Moses, the deliverer has landed.

At least a Political Party (in UWP) is bold and courageous to provide potential solutions to our Island’s ills…

Dominican nationals seem to be a body of knowledge, with lots of ideas and well-opinionated but such strength appears to be their weakness. Why can’t these idealistic thoughts be harnessed and provide the answers to Dominica’s economic decline?
    ________________________________________

    What’s urgently required…

Our nation’s competitiveness must be built on regional economies, and because there is no “one-size-fits-all” economic plan, regional leaders must base their strategies around the assets and opportunities that make them unique. And, like the ruling government, they must have a focus on small businesses and entrepreneurs.

In today’s economy, small businesses drive competitiveness. Since 1995, they have created approximately two-thirds of the net new jobs in the States. Small firms also produce 13 times more patents per employee than larger firms, and employ more than 40% of America’s high-tech workers.

That’s why mayors, governors and business leaders from various American states are having success in using regional collaboration models like the Advanced Power and Energy Cluster (APC). These public-private partnerships create the supportive ecosystems entrepreneurs and small businesses need so they can create jobs that will drive a region’s economic growth.

Whether you support UWP Team Dominica or not, you must agree that since Mr. Lennox Linton took over the leadership of the party, according to the Labor Party, something is happening or has happened. Skeritt must be very concerned, even running scared to call the general elections. Dominicans are seeing a brand of politics and the wanting to win a general election, Dominica has never seen in all its life time. Again, we should not be surprised, their are numerous political parties in the Caribbean who have sought Mr. Linton’s assistance in order to win an election. So, the notion, if not Skeritt then who or the opposition is not ready, appears to have been dumped into the garbage bin.

The only election he helped a party win was the UPP in Antigua in 2003. Every other attempt across the OECS has been miserable and painful for him. A very interesting statistic. So now what is your point?

You have no vision. The gardens is literally dead now. Only trees for the tourist to see. The idea of a water park is a novel one. A water park in the gardens will add value to the gardens as a tourist attraction. In Dominica we try to depend only on the natural resources but we must add value to the natural resources into to improve on the tourist experience which will lead to more stay over tourist. Your eyes need not only to be opened but also your brain. We need innovative ideas to move this county forward. While i have not made up my mind on who i am voting for i think Mr. Isaac should be complimented for his ideas.

I support a water park, but not in the botanical garden, that is not the place for it. We should restore the garden, close that rat-run of a road through it and charge visitors an entrance fee.

No one can dispute the fact that Roseau is the worst it has been for decades….This Labour Administration has totally neglected the city and after 15 years are now talking about developing Roseau…What a shame.
They could have renovated the existing statehouse for less than 10 million dollars and use the remainder to develop the city…
But the UWP will reverse this trend….
The incoming parliamentary representative and new UWP government have a great vision and sound plans to transform the city…
    Change is a must NOT a Option…

Is anyone UWP and DLP listening to people like Cecil Shillingford who has been making mention of how we need to decentralize ECONOMIC ACTIVITY in Roseau because of the risk associated with volcanic activity. I guess none have been to Plymouth Montserrat to see what a volcanic eruption really does. Not a wishful thinking but at some point in time volcanic activity will intensify in DA and we need to be prepared. Decentralization of economic activity and moving it to the North is one tangible way that we can address and mitigate against the unfortunate event of a pyroclastic flow. All things cannot be about Roseau..

    • ???
      August 29, 2014

Do you mean we should just abandon Roseau?

It could be today, the next 100 years, 500 years or even a million years. It will certainly happen. So let us stop playing God – frightening people. God will take care of his people. He is in charge. When it happens and we are the ones to experience it so be it. If it happens in a 100 years and our great-grands experience it – so be it. Who cares if it happens in 500 years time? Should I worry myself to death today for something that could happen 100 or 500 years from now?

In the last ten or so years, maybe more, Cecil Shillingford has invested heavily in building his residence at Bellevue Chopin, under one of the most active volcanic centres – Morne Canot just above Bellevue Chopin. He has not taken heed to his own message.

Be that as it may, the workers plans for Roseau is very impressive. It however does not say how long it will take to develop the plan? Where will the resources (both human and financial) are going to come from? etc. etc. When you add the Roseau development project with the Mahaut and Marigot projects, announced in similar styles (no dates or availability of resources) you have what? Just smooth talk.

There’s a Russian saying, “Pray to God, but continue to row toward shore.” It’s not faithless to plan for this eventuality, and it’s not the worst idea for Dominica’s economic activity to become less centralised provided that transportation links around the country are strong.

      • Emile Zapatos
        August 30, 2014

Cecil Shillingford and others like him can talk about decentralization because of the threat and risk of volcanoes. If this is a real threat we need to have plans for a total evacuation of the island. From north to south, from Capushin to Scots Head we have over 100 potential volcanoes. Dominica is a volcanic island and less than 300 square miles big.
This threat is sufficient reason for us to return to Jesus the savior. He alone can save us from volcanic doom. Dominica use to be 99% of practicing Christians, now our churches are being emptied and we are less appreciated of the many blessings we have received.

      • August 31, 2014

The churches are empty because they preach Politic instead of bringing the people closer to God so they cant live a life that is pleasing to him, God love all his children regardless of which party you support remember that Dominicans .

Noni! Arent you one of the bright bulbs in the D/can room who makes everyone see ? So Athie Martin is not a naysayer after all!
Noni!” More things change the more they remain the same” is an old yet current & applicable cliché.
I oppose both party ‘s ideologically but Athie is not a fool please have respect for his intellect despite his failures. We ought to by now realize that this backward politics of ignorance and square pegs in triangular holes must be put behind us. It’s a damn shame to see guys like Ron Parra ,Wiltshire etc be ridiculed in their later yrs while ignoramous et Al dominiate our political spectrum like ur P.M, peepep. Goobles & wife etc etc.
Now am not letting off the other jokers lightly LL Isaacs is he Gregory? lol Greg Isaacs sang about nightnurse. Joseph needs a psychiatrist. Too much” La pat” flour mixed with water in his head.I know he was born by the river maybe he ate too much millet kaka so he wants to put some in the gardens SMH. Jokers like those mentioned make the Neo DLP-ites Labour In Name Only LINOs look better when they are DFP transplants into the authentic DLP,
It was entertainment listen to Isaacs last night. He does not only look funny he is also funny thinking up all those dysney Land ideas. I know he sent his son to visit Disney some yrs ago but did not realize he would dream of wanting to implementing these thing he is son mentioned after his florida trip! Continue to make us laugh Isaacs next time tickle everyone at ur meeting under their arms then scratch under our feet.
Isaacs thanks for making a lot of people laugh last night we all went to bed happy not to Pharrell Wiiliams’s Happy but to Isaac’s jokes. You giving both Pharrell & Earl Williams competition.
Am rooting for you Isaac Go Isaac go! If is based on comedy you can and have already won Roseau Central.

All business people are under tremendous pressure from this DLP regime. The government lacks foresight. Their number one economic policy is VAT. Followed closely by handout. Mr. Isaac is a victim of the economic climate that is propelled by this administration. Mr Isaac should be complimented for attempting to do business is this anti business environment. By the way when last have you saved meaningfully? We are all living from hand to mouth sorry except PM Skerrit and his cabal
