UWP blasts Lugay parliamentarty suspension

Members of the UWP say they support Lugay

Members of the opposition United Workers Party have all condemned the suspension of UWP senator, Danny Lugay, from parliament and have said they stand in solidarity with him.

On Thursday, Lugay was suspended following a unanimous vote by parliamentarians on the government side in favor of a motion tabled by legal affairs minister, Ian Douglas, until the outcome of a matter he has before the court is settled.

Lugay has been charged with inciting the murder of attorney Alick Lawrence arising from statements he made at a meeting in Soufriere recently in which he said “some people deserve to die” and that he “would take them out” if his heart was not different.

On Friday the UWP called a press conference and they labeled government officials as hypocrties who abuse their power in the house.

Lugay said the actions by speaker of the house, Alix Boyd-Knight, was “entertaining and facilitating a blood thirsty government.”

“What we saw yesterday was the House of Parliament apparently resurrecting the Doctrine of Necessity to crucify me for a matter for which I have apologized unconditionally,” he stated. “I was taken aback by the fact that a matter which is before the Magistrate Court, you have the highest court of the land side by side with the Magistrate court hearing that matter. I was surprised because you’ve heard Madame Speaker cautioning us several times that any time a matter is before the court, we should not speak on it. Yet yesterday we had so many members on the government side speaking on the matter.”

Leader of the opposition, Hector John, pointed out that the speaker of the house is attempting to derail the efforts of the opposition, noting that Lugay was simply speaking out of frustration.

“He was bailed on $8,000 with absolutely no conditions,” he stated. “The court did not see Mr. Lugay as a threat, no one sees Mr. Lugay as a threat to the citizens of Dominica. Why then must members of parliament use parliament with the support of Alix Boyd Knight to keep Mr. Lugay from making his presentation in parliament?”

Former leader of the UWP, Edison James, pointed out further that what took place on Thursday was simply a political ploy by the Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, and Tony Astaphan.

“What we saw yesterday was power being exercised without authority,” he stressed. “They have power 18-3, but they had no authority to do what they did and realize the danger that Dominicans must pay attention to. What we saw yesterday was a situation which tells us that if at any time this Labor Party decides that there is a matter coming up in the Parliament that it does not want the opposition to be involved in, they will move a motion, use their power 18-3 and say that they want us out for whatever period we want. It is a danger.”

James called on Dominicans to pay attention to the constitution and the laws of Dominica and to take a stand against “galloping dictatorship.”

He indicated further that the party stands in solidarity with Lugay.

Meanwhile leader of the UWP, Lennox Linton, told privately-owned Q95 on Friday that the government used its majority in parliament to “force” the suspension of Lugay.

He pointed out that the prime minister remained the leader of government business in the house, even when he had a dual citizenship matter before the court.

“But you see this is a country of great double standards,” he said. “Mr. Skerrit continued as the head of government business in the parliament for the more than three years it took the court to decide and behave as though nothing happened. The same Roosevelt Skerrit has the unmitigaged gall to stand in the parliament as a representative of hypocrisy at the very highest levels that you will find anywhere in the world to tell us what applies to Danny Lugay, ought not to have applied to him.”

For the politically irresponsible and immature statements by Mr. Lugay, a move by the Govt. and Judiciary system which was inevitable. But the longer that case drags on the longer his suspension till polling day!!!! He is gonna become ineligible to be legally nominated… watch and see…. Parliament was just a bit of field testing.

That is a good idea to stand in solidarity for you brother. That’s what friends are for. I am in disbelief, can you imagine what has happened? The same people who is in the other party will not open their mouth and say that’s wrong you know why? They are afraid to be fired. They all just go with the flow, they are like crabs in a bucket. I don’t know but it seems that there is no law in DA. What I have notice Dominicans don’t know there rights, they allow people to take advantage on them. People who are in power in this small islands like to be bullies in that case scenario that’s an act of bulling for real. There is fear building in a lot of people they are afraid to speak or voice their opinion how they feel. The day that they do they will not have their job it will taken away from them. I just can digest this its unbelievable. Anything can happen and people can just go about their daily life like nothing happened. Please stand in solidarity for you brother. I want to see if you all will be send to jail for for standing. In the US they speak bad about each other inside congress out of congress they don’t terminated form their jobs it freedom of speech. They can walk out and walk right back in. In this little island people leave in fear. Men Keep standing! Keep standing! I am so glad you all did.

The opposition appears to be surprised at this move by the Skeritt led administration. You must not forget Skeritt’s statement that he want to win all twenty one seats. You must not forget Skeritt’s statement that he wants to be Prime Minister for the next fifty years. You must not forget when Skeritt hurriedly called the meetings of the parliament in order to try to get rid of two opposition parliamentarians. These actions appear to look like a dictator, it smells like a dictator, it quarks will a dictator, as far as I am concerned, we have a dictator steering us right in the face.

GM dominica. Remember we are all children of dominica, she is our mother and, God is our father. How many times have u committed sin and ask your Heavenly Father for forgiveness, why is it so hard to forgive your brother when he ask for forgiveness. Maybe one day u to will need forgiveness for something you our your children did, even if your children are oversees remember the sins of the parents fall on the children. SO BE CAREFUL OF THE STONES THAT YOU THROW because the ones you love the most is the ones you hurt the most. The pit that you digging for mr lugay is the pit you must fall in.

In the meantime the UWP, the government in waiting, stays out of Parliament, does not push its budget and forcefully present its alternative budget in the place and time that voters are listening in large numbers. Is it that hard to juggle parliament and Lugay’s matter at the same time, especially just months leading up to the elections?

Really am a bit surprised at LEnnox’s comments. The question is should Lugay as a responsible citizen and a member of the Dominican political parliament be allowed in his :frustration:as was claimed ) to make these comments about death of certain persons.we talk a lot about upholding lawlessness and yet still we applaud Lugay on his behavior isn’t this double standard. Which brings me to the conclusion that if an when the opposition becomes the ruling government they will kill when frustrated is this the people I want to represent me people with quick detrimental actions to themselves and others people who act before thinking?????? My analysis of the people in the opposition is that though most of them are very educated they are still slow minded thinkers and their own worst enemy

Apart from the statement by Mr Lennox Linton, the statements made by the other politicians made no sense. I genuinely believe that the position of the labour party is commendable, no matter whether Mr Lugay was speaking out of frustration or not, he continues to use incendiary language ( See above “….blood thirsty government”) and admits that he is a fool when he claims that to apologise is in his DNA. His utterances were just not suitable for one involved in representational politics. I believe that the UWP should have dismissed him from the party and completely disassociate the party from Mr Lugay’s inane utterances.

The relative silence by the UWP on the matter would suggest that they condone Mr Lugay’s ineptitude and it is okay for one to use the political platform to incite violence.
The UWP was dealt the perfect hand to illustrate to Dominica and the world there moral stance but they have failed to grab their opportunity. What a regrettable missed opportunity, they would doubtlessly soar in the poles locally and internationally they would be taken much more seriously.

It is of course too late now, because if they abandon Mr Lugay now, it gives the labour party another rod with which to beat them. Labour will simply claim that the UWP is a ‘good times party’ ….They will be with you in the good times but once the going gets rough they will abandon you. Surely the UWP can not allow itself to be tarred with this brush!!!!!

Parry, I would advise the Prime Minister to be very careful in terms of the advice he gets and his association with Tony. It is alleged, the directive to censure Mr. Lugay came from him. The accusation concerning Mr. Lennox Linton as regards to the Prime Minister’s confidential information being given to a third party, it is also alleged, Tony played a part in the movements of certain documents. It is also alleged, the case brought against Mr. Linton for his statement about prostitution and young people involving Government Ministers, was allegedly the work of Tony.

Lugay said he is a believer. Then he should have known better to refrain from ungodly remarks.

THE suspension of Mr lugay is the right one . he have apologized and that I commend him for that , but the thing is he and his party have not look at the magnitude of the statement that he delivered . we know as a fact that we Dominicans can be aggressive when it come to politics , and some of us can and would do almost anything for the party we support , we put party before country and that’s what holding dominica back .. mr. lugay there is a possibility that a supporter out there could take out someone because u as a leader has made such a statement . sir u and your party are asking for change but here u all are already doing as bad as the government u all looking to replace. if the UWP get in office and when negotiating things get a bit frustrating ,is this how u all going to act. you and the uwp is not the victim here ,the excuses are poor and weak ,and the right thing to do is to step down .show us that u all mean what u all are asking for change, if not stop trying to fool us !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man I am so disappointed in you all. The man is charged with a criminal offense. He is being paid by the citizens of Dominica. Just as other Govt. workers will be suspended should they be charged with a criminal offense so should Lugay be. As for the PM and his dual citizenship, this wasn’t a criminal offense and you know that very well Mr. Linton. So in that case a suspension wasn’t warranted. Please don’t let me give up the little support for you guys. Do what is right, denounce Lugay’s behavior and move on. His behavior no matter whether he apologized should not be taken lightly and should be sanctioned.

If not all person who commits these acts should just apologize and walk. No court, no sanction just an apology. The penalty for doing wrong will be an apology. Come on people, wrong is wrong and change should not be what is convenient for a few but for the better of Dominica. We cannot and shouldn’t embrace half change. Changing the people in Govt. isn’t all the change that DA needs. So, because it was used as political rhetoric, does not make it acceptable. The threat of murdering someone is always a serious matter. Words can sometimes be very detrimental in use, a Congressman, Senator or President of the USA dare not call any African American a “NIGGA”. If he does, then that’s the end of his/her career. So Mr. Luguay should do the honorable thing and resign, but that will never happen, look who is the leader of his party.

Dictatorship entrenching itself in our Nature Isle. What else?

The Chief Magistrate signed and issued a warrant to arrest a lawyer Isidore, a close friend of Skerritt.. The Court found it fitting to have that Lawyer arrested, because of 42 charges of fraud filed against him, by lawyer Emanuel.

Up to now, my people, no arrest. The court’s order was disregarded.. The Chief of police at the time claimed that he was out of State and therefore the lawyer could not be arrested. What utter Rubbish for an excuse !!!

The IPO requested the PM to an interview regarding his declaration of assets in 2013. Up to now, no attendance. PM decide he not in that. The IPO wanted to verify if what the PM declared was true. The IPO is being disrespected.

Remember all the revelations about corruption, secret deals, passport sales, sale of diplomatic passports, and so, and so, and so on? Who involve in those illegalities, Danny Lugay? But no arrests?

Who will answer and speak the truth about the $64,000,000.00 owed to Venezuela, until that country had to be begging the DLP gov’t for payment of that debt? Where all that money gone? Is not our damn business?

Witness the implementation of the statement in Parliament ,”That country is too Free. Yes, Madame Speaker, that country is too free.” What about talk of hunting down the Terrorists?

Never forget Papa Doc and Baby Doc in Haiti. They controlled the police, the judicial system, all institutions, Tonton macoutes would search, arrest, beat up people just like that. Don’t we learn any lessons?

Mongoose Gang in Grenada terrorized all those who dare talk genuinely or expressed their alternative views. Remember Eric Gairy and his rule? The trends and the signs are plain to see.

UWP are you guys for real citizenship hearing without evidence vs someone inciting violence in the manner of Mr. Lugay does not compare! The mere fact that you guys can stand in solidarity with Lugay’s behaviour is a clear indication on the type and dangerous actions you guys are willing to take to get into power!

“Unmitigated gall”…. sigh .. so many words

Linton, you were a journalist with great investigative prowess.

What I would like to have heard is
    1. Does the action violate any constitutional rule?
    2. Lugay’s matter is described as “criminal” and that the Prime Minister’s matter is described as “civil”. Does this make a difference in whether or not a persons gets suspended from Parliament.
    3. Could the Speaker just reject/accept to put a motion to the vote on the basis of whether one party FEELS?

I like information and I get so disappointed when we just spout a lot of words and say nothing at all.

  57. July 25, 2014

I would like to tell the uwp reps I can understand you all frustrations but please don’t give the labor party this satisfaction.they just looking for a one country government.and they trying what ever they can.

  58. July 25, 2014

If Dominicans wanna sit by and play stupid or be ignorant about the facts, then go right ahead, but the patterns of Skerrit and the DLP are leading straight to a path of dictatorship, because we know who his mentors are,
and their trail of blood they left in their countries.
Are we gonna sit by and allow our little Island paradis to become another Syria??
We got one last chance to avoid bloodshed and it that next election, Domiicans should clean themselfies of all and everyone of these corrupt government,
Time to put Dominica back on the democratic path.
One question Have you every seen a country with a dictator without bloodshed?? NO so let dont make the same 1979 mistake again, We have given Skerrit and his gang their fair share of chances 15 years and he failed us,
If Skerrit wanted to make a difference, he had time, the mandates and the Money but he failed miserable
Now its time to past on leadership of the Commonwealth of Dominica to someone else

  59. July 25, 2014

The PM is right he wasn’t in court for insiting violence the power of life and death is in the tongue we all apologize but we still have to pay the consequences. My friend in court last week apologize to the victim but was still sentence to seven years

I don’t believe Mr. Lugay’s case will get to the court until three weeks or less before the general elections. In November, when the preliminaries reach the courts, it will be proponed. I am predicting, exactly what happened in the Parliament yesterday, will happen again. The difference is, instead of not being able to participate in the proceedings of the house, they are going to move a motion, that until such time that the case is called, he cannot be the candidate representing the UWP in the goodwill constituency. I wish to suggest to UWP Team Dominica, have someone like Young Bull ready in case of this emergency.

Doc are you kidding me participate in what? these guys there or not there is the same thing they don’t stand for anything the one thing they ever agree on was the small mercies, you people talking like these guys are of any significance you talking like this guy was elected by the people the young lady said she will do better she will debate in the house she turns around and walk out the house, the only place you can debate cause you know the PM will never do that so the only place you can get him you walk out with your debate in your bag and go out there and tell people the PM don’t want to debate what a joke.

But Dahman how can he get away when his navel string is buried in the soil of this land like all of us? to me by his DNA stained this soil it trumps all other and its not like he left at an early age then came back as a man he stayed and eat the same fig and oil he ate the same dry bread like everyone, so how can he get away or how can he be illegal in his place of birth? when the man mother made him and he opened his eyes he saw the same two parrots on the flag of the land like all of us.

Bravo, Team Dominica. Let the world know that Dominica is managed by a Labour Party Government in Parliament, which gives a rodent’s behind to the Constitution. We better do something about it before it is too late.

Jah I know am uneducated but hmmmmm, now let me go by points
(1)Mr. Lugay, why did you make that statement in the first place? now if they were blood thirsty why wait till the almost end to ask for your removal? and Sir. who did you apologize to the main person you called name Alick Lawrence you never said you apologized to him? your mistake was not asking to be heard first when the parliament was in session not sure if you could but I think they would let it just to get it out the way.

    (2) Mr. John speaking out of frustration gives you a pass, so please people when frustrated you can threaten Sprags life and it’s ok he wont go to the police.

    (3) Mr. James if they used the house in the manner you said was wrong take the matter to court the real court not the peoples court, so they used their position without authority and you sit there on a conference table instead of filing a court petition? great that’s the kind of leadership we can expect when the change is made WOW.

    (4) Last but not least what can I say about number four, the PM had a citizenship matter before the court Lugay has a criminal matter before the court, now the PM was elected by the people so had the people asked him to step aside while the matter was being taken care of he would have no choice but to do so, plus why the people that filed the motion did not ask for him to sit it out? but my guess is it would not work cause he had the law on his side. Lugay was not elected by the people he was appointed by your party, and you want to lead my country please.

How can one reconcile with a vindictive evil element as such? Now that we know what we are dealing with, and the distance they ‘ll go to frustrate you in the courts, then how do you reconcile?
Obviously, the government is not afraid to flex its power and shows its colors when it does wrong for whatever reasons because it knows its supporters will go with the flow..

Let those lobourites sit tbere an take it for a joke; just remembe you’ll have families and children and that could happen to anyone of them.,..This is not a party issue; this is our democratic rights are in danger. The labor party CRIMINALS will take aways all of our fundamental rights while you’ll sit there and cry labor…In what civilized country those behavior are acceptabl only in Dominica….All the corruption starts from the head and come down,…

The difference between the Skerrit and Lugay court case Mr. Linton. In the case of Mr. Skerrit, the matter was a civil matter. In the Danny Lugay’s case, Danny has been arrested and brought before the court on a criminal matter. Our system of governance says the two are not the same. So let us be honest. Say it as it is. These are two different types of case requiring the application f different laws.

Mr. James as Leader of the House then, will remember when he used his very slim majority to take action against Sabaroche for a statement Sabaroche is alleged to have made in Colihaut. Sabraoche’s matter was not the subject of a police investigation, He was never arrested and brought before a criminal tribunal. But the UWP found it sufficiently serious enough to table a censure motion. Here is the “representative of hypocrisy” Mr. Linton.

I just have one question. When they say he was removed from parliament by unanimous vote does that mean labour party rep or the entire house? Did the members of the opposition not vote? I would imagine they voted nay.
I bet they did but its not clear in this story for the records.

DLP days are numbered. When the tables turn which it will, I can tell you we should have no mercy on them. Do like the Jews after world war II , as they hunt and find every one of Hitler hunch men who tried to destroyed them. Make them pay for their crimes through the courts and make justice swift and quick. They think they getting away, it could be when they 80+ years on their walking stick , they will pay. Evil never conquer forever. God is making sure he giving them enough rope to tie themselves. Justice will rise again!!

A bunch of jokes!!!! Wannabes politicians. Anywhere in the world a politician make such statements. His party would have asked him to resign. Dominican need to watch international news and see how it done in the real world. Team Dominica need to stop talking s… and campaign on matters of importance. Skerrit this, skerrit that, team Dominica obsession with Skerrit has run it cost. In the world that we currently live , people take statement like those of Lugay very seriously. I am amazed that some Dominicans still believes that this man should remain in parliament.

So, now you finally noticed that Dominica is in the middle of a galloping dictatorship. I have been saying it for a while, we have to be very careful and vigilant. However, the day is nearing that words are not enough anymore and action is required. Let’s make a stand against this hypocrate Skerrit and his bold adviser. They will take things as far as we allow them to – no further.
