UWP confirms participation in upcoming by-elections

UWP Leader Ron Green

Leader of the United Workers Party Ron Green has given confirmation that UWP candidate for Marigot Edison James and Salisbury’s Hector John will be nominated today.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced that June 21, 2010 is nomination day and July 9, 2010 is the day for by-elections in these two constituencies.

Green said however the UWP is still concerned about the issue of the clarification of the proper vacating of the seats.

“The President has suggested and is in agreement that the issue is of national importance and it should reach the court. We are disappointed that the PM has not seen it fit to facilitate the business of going to court with the matter,” he said.

According to Green, the UWP has filed an injunction in the courts to seek to ensure that the matter of the vacating of the seats is clarified in the courts.

“We believe that the speaker’s role has been improper and that Attorney General and PM have rushed ahead and not sought proper constitutional guidance in the vacating of the seats,” he said.

He said if the courts agreed that the seats were not properly vacated, then the by elections would have to be put off.
