The United Workers Party (UWP) has broken its silence on Dominica’s participation in the Sochi Winter Olympics and is demanding answers from the government on the matter.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, UWP hopeful for Grand Fond, Dr. Thomson Fontaine, stated that the party has viewed with concern the recent negative press which alleged that Dominica was involved in scamming the just concluded games.
“This serious allegations and negative press surround the participation of two Olympians (Gary and Angelica di Silvestri), a husband and wife team from New York and Italy respectively, who represented Dominica at the games,” he said. “The di Silvestris informed the world that they were invited to Dominica and to become Dominican citizens after making charitable contributions to Dominica including for the construction of a children’s hospital.”
Fontaine said in light of the ‘continuing damage being done to Dominica’s image overseas,’ the UWP calls on the Roosevelt Skerrit government to provide answers.
“Firstly, inform the Dominican public of what steps, if any, are being taken to reverse the negative effects of the Sochi scandal on Dominica’s image in the international community including, but not limited to, remedial actions to address the willful involvement of Dominica in an act of fraud against the International Olympics Committee,” he said.
He further demands that the government “disclose truthfully and completely when and how much was paid by the di Silvestri’s for their passports and particulars of the regular and, or diplomatic passports issued to them.”
“Thirdly, disclose truthfully and completely the specific amount of money donated by the couple for the children’s hospital or any other charitable organizations in Dominica, including the name of the individuals or institutions that received the money, the bank at which the money was held and the applicable interest rate on this public interest funds,” Fontaine said.
He also requested that the government make public the procedures that were followed in getting the couple in the Winter Olympics.
“The UWP feels that is important for the public and the world to understand the complete story surrounding the fiasco that has become Dominica’s participation in the Sochi Olympics and what measures have been put in place to ensure that we do not have a similar occurrence in the future,” he pointed out.
Meantime Deputy Political Leader Claudius Sanford called on ‘all right thinking Dominicans’ to condemn a statement by Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, who said that only the Prime Minister must always hold ministerial responsibility for finance and economic affairs.
“This statement is typical of the superficial, backward thinking that has characterized Mr. Skerrit’s handling of the finance and economic portfolio over the past decade,” he said. “As a result Dominica, with the largest cabinet in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union, has achieved the worst economic performance results.”

There is no passport scandal reference the Olympic. It is known that they were given Dominica’s citizenship why they represented DA in the Olympics.

Having been away from Dominica for a very long time, although I visit regularly,there are some areas of the Dominican thinking that I am just now beginning to get.I read all of the responses and can tell one’s political leaning just by how they respond to an article that has more to do with accountability than anything else.
Being independent of any political affiliation it is really funny to sit back and read these comments. First, whether or not Thompson Fountain was found guilty of any crimes, that does not mean that the questions and the call for accountability are not valid.It is high time that we as a people emancipate ourselves from the slavery of the system that can give us a fish rather than teach us to fish so that we can become independent.
There should be no reason for questions because from the moment the international media began questioning Dominica’s involvement with this couple, the Government or their spokes people should have cleared the air on the matter, not everyone would agree with their explanation but there would not be this air of arrogance and the belief that the Government should not be accountable to it’s citizens because one of their opponents is accused of wrong doing.
It is high time that Dominican’s rise up and realize that there are men who were born in the 60’s and still live in the house their Grandfather built, but they are RED or Blue or Green. My Government is supposed to empower me to do better, to make a better life for myself and my children, not give me a handout on election eve so that I can vote them back into power.
I don’t know who will form the next Government, but I sincerely hope that who ever does, will have the ultimate respect for the people that they SERVE, yes I said SERVE… and will be accountable to them so that the respect will be returned and we can all be our brother’s keepers.

I know I am going to get kicked by some people for what I am about to say; nevertheless, we know the answer to that already, this husband and wife duo could not make the Olympic team no matter in which country they are born. In the first place they are too old for Olympic material. They could not even pass the preliminary qualifying stages in America, or Italy.
We know that, and we also know what the American, and International press thinks of these people. So, the question that needs to be answered is wether or not the expense of their travel to Russia was paid for by the peoples treasury of Dominica.
I suppose if we have an Olympic committee in the country, that committee should be in a position to answer that question, and not Skerrit, since the government of Dominica should not be in the business of sponsoring Olympics hopefuls, never mind pseudo athletes, as the papers called them tourist citizens who bought their Dominica citizenship.

I suggest rather than making this an political nightmare, Thomas Dorsett should be the one to lean on for all the answers, and not Skerrit, and that is unless the treasury paid their expense, however if the people paid their way, or if some private entity such as the DOC sponsored them, I think the answers been sort are basically baseless! Granted there were negative statements made by the press but the International Olympic Committee hasn’t said anything about being defrauded. They accepted these people for what ever reason (I never was in favor of them representing DA) as being legitimate contenders. You should have first get and verify your information from the International Olympics Committee.

Clarification, government does not pick the Olympic Team, that is left to the NOC (national Olympic Committee. So DOC(Felix Wilson) should answer the UWP. Like who advise these athletes on what to do to qualify, did the DOC advise of the process and made the Ski Association an affiliate, DOC is responsible for this mess.
Still you can’t blame DOC for this mess. The people (legit Dominicans) did all what was necessary to get to the Olympics. The question about how they got citizenship is a government issue. The question on how they qualified is an IOC issue. They (IOC) surely will revisit the loop hole if any exists.
Dominica has an economic citizenship program like the one uwp are planning to have if they ever get in power. These people met the requirements. Check the government of Dominica website to find out what the requirements are.

However, none of the articles I read about the DiSilvestris in Sochi quoted them as saying they contributed to the construction of a children’s hospital in Dominica. None. If there is one, I would like to know where it is.
