UWP describes manifesto as “social contract with the people of Dominica”

Linton said the UWP’s manifesto will be launched at Lindo Park

The United Workers Party (UWP) has described its general election manifesto as a “social contract with the people of Dominica.”

UWP’s Political leader Lennox Linton made the remarks at a UWP rally recently.

“The people’s document, the social contract with the people of Dominica for jobs, for justice, for equal rights, for protection of our children, for first class elderly care, this contract-the people’s contact, a contract with the people to make Dominica the best place to live, the best place to enjoy life,” Linton said in describing the manifesto.

The UWP has been heavily criticized by the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) for not being able to produce a manifesto in the run up to the December 8 general election. Leader of the DLP, prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, had said his party was the only one that had been able to produce a manifesto just days after the date the election was announced.

But Linton said the UWP will be launching its manifesto at the Lindo Park on November 26.

According to him, every aspect of the manifesto was done right here in Dominica.

“Our graphic artist is from Dominica, our manifesto was laid out here in Dominica and our manifesto will be printed right here in Dominica,” he said.

    If the manifesto is not important as many of the position supporters have said, why even lunch one o the 26th? We cannot continue to make excuses for the politicians on both sides. The UWP wasn’t ready as they claimed hence the delay in having their manifesto on time. Just admit and move on. There is no reason for all these excuses and lies. To say that people wouldn’t read it is pathetic because here you go printing one hence a waste of money and time base on your thinking. Is that how you will waste the little money in DA? To many excuses. You are in the position you should be attacking and not searching for excuses. One more thing I have read the DLP manifesto and you are wrong with your description. It surely is not a pipe dream but something that is realistic and hat can be done. It is left for them to meet their promise.

    I am glad that Mr. Linton have defined what a manifesto is to the people of Dominica. the people need to know that change is a must is more than just changing from one government to another ,but rather what differs between the two. So change from what to what. Change from dictatorship to democracy. A government of the people by the people for the people. A government of transparency and accountability to the people. A government which will continue the social programmes for the elderly, early childhood education, health care and preserve the best f our culture and traditions of self determination for all.

      The truth is UWPITES. Your Leader was not prepared for the election. He lacks vision, foresight and awareness. He was calling for election for several months. The UWP is the opposing party and they are in a defensive posture. You must be in the offensive and be prepared at all times. Releasing a Manifesto at this stage will not convince too many Labor supporters to change their minds. It appears that the PARTY is heading to a crushing defeat. MR. LINTON WAS A POOR CHOICE.

    I just opened my copy of the DLP 2009 and reviewed the tourism sector (an area of interest to me). In case you have a copy it’s page 10. Below are some of the promises listed.

    In the new term, we will continue to grow the Tourism Sector by:
    1. Construct a modern, state of the art cruise ship berth and entertainment centre, capable of accommodating up to three mega ships at any one time.
    2. Construct a Marina Village, Hotel and Shopping Complex in Portsmouth;
    3. Restoring the French Quarter of the City of Roseau
    4. Establish a regime of special incentives for residential tourism;
    5. Re-establishing the Old Market Plaza as an open air plaza for cultural events;
    6. Providing financial support for development of a resort at Woodford Hill;

    Did the party accomplish any of these promises?

People in this country really needs to grow up and look for country development and not personal handouts. My god, can’t Dominicans see that this country is at a stand still, especially in tourism and agriculture, which i consider as the two most important sectors of the economy, if they don’t grow then how can jobs be created, and with no jobs then the economy will fail. can’t people see that, we are really blind in this country. And I hope the UWP will take away all the assets that the PM, Skerrit stole from the hard working people of Dominica to enrich himself and give it back to the state.

      Im also an undecided voter and I agree with you that they uwp should have launched their manifesto to help people like us. I have been following both parties. The DLP has launched a pretty interesting manifesto but the question is can they deliver on the promises. I reviewed the DLP 2009 manifesto and there were quite a number of projects and promises which were not fulfilled so the question is – “Is the comparison of manifestos a good enough criteria for making a decision”. Although the UWP has not presented theirs they have been stating some of their plans and strategies. The ecomonic forum held earlier this year gave the public good insight on their plans for jobs, education and the ecomony. I hope the uwp really presents their manifesto as they promised

    • Bernie
      November 22, 2014

      A party can launch its manifesto whenever it so decides; having a manifesto is not a big deal as many of us know that parties launch manifestos and don’t live up to what is promised. Also, in this age of e-commerce where many countries are going paperless, why does one need to have a manifesto to determine what party he/she will vote to work for the best interest of the country. People need to realize that when a country has a good health system in place as well as its people are educated, we will be all happier as we would be enjoying a better standard of living and working for the betterment of each other.

  25. Doc. Love
    November 20, 2014

    Once again, Mr. Linton and UWP Team Dominica have shown the weakness of Skeritt as a wise leader. In my opinion, he is to easily fooled. He almost broke the stand of a micro phone and disrupted Ambrose’s speech during a political rally, in order to, what he described as breaking news. The breaking news was that UWP was not going to present a manifesto. Timothy said the UWP should at least put something on the internet. The same UWP was criticized and even ridiculed for being the first to put a manifesto on the internet. McIntyre said if the UWP was to present a manifesto, the contents would be stolen from the DLP. Aaron said Linton lacked the educational capacity as to how to produce a manifesto. Now that the manifesto is going to be presented to Dominicans, I wonder how are they going to remove the broken eggs from their faces. One of Skeritt’s problem is that he spends so much time defaming Mr. Linton, he spends no time studying his strategy. He has sensationalized the manifesto story to the extent that Dominicans appear to have forgotten about the DLP manifesto and are eagerly awaiting the manifesto of UWP. The anticipation of the UWP has move a couple notches, because Mr. Linton reported that his manifesto was designed and printed by Dominicans in Dominica, when compared to the DLP’s which was designed and printed out of Dominica, then shipped to Dominica.

    Lennox…..Your message is too vague for the average voter. Break it down to a one liner that people can grasp very easily.

    For Obama in 2008 it was: “Change we can believe in” and the chant “Yes We Can”.

    For Rob Ford, Toronto’s outgoing mayor (in 2009) it was: Stopping the Gravy Train

    For Toronto new mayor elect (2014) it was> Smart Track (building new subways and train lines in the city).

    What I am trying to say is, you are too wordy, keep it simple.

      Your statement sounds desperate. If you are begging for your daily bread and you can blog on a computer calling for change, something has to be wrong with you so check yourself. Beggars need help.

      Is it a requirements that u launch ur manifesto before nomination?????? As skerrit why pReduce a manifesto when labour failed to accomplished what it set out to in its manifesto….that’s what u need to concern ur self about… A party who time after time has failed to deliver on promises made it is manifesto..

      All DLP has to do is let the rest of Dominica including me know where the money tree is. Someone has to sponsor an election. People do not get money from thin air. Money does not land on the doorstep. Oh oh my bad….I forgot….DLP money came from thin air. Campaign money just landed on the door step of then PM Skerritt. He needs no sponsor!

        I also need to know where the money for the UWP came from. They say they don’t have money but they are spending money, where is the UWP money tree?

      You must be a very bad parent, the kind who never questions their children when the bring home gifts. Your concern should be the source of the DLP campaign finances.

      rubbish utterances.
      UWP TEAM DOMINICA has always said they are going to have the manifesto. The question is ,are you going to read it? Another question, have you read DLP manifesto?
