UWP in process of reviewing non-attendance of parliament

Opposition Senator Ron Green

The new executive of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has confirmed that the party is in the process of reviewing its strategy of non-attendance in parliament.

Opposition Senator Ron Green told a UWP meeting in Lagon in the capital Roseau on Monday night that the party is in discussion about a new resolution which was passed in La Plaine at its delegates convention.

UWP MPs have not participated in proceedings of the House of Assembly since 2010, making only brief strategic appearances occasionally before walking out of the House.

They have cited the need for electoral reform and the alleged biasness of Speaker Alix Boyd-Knights as among the factors that fuelled the prolonged boycott of the House of Assembly by the handful of elected opposition MPs.

“Last Sunday a resolution was moved by the La Plaine constituency group and it was passed by the 150 delegates who were in attendance. It called for a review of the strategy of non participation in parliament,” Green told supporters at the Lagon meeting.

He explained that the resolution “called on the United Workers Party to review its strategy on non participation in parliament. That resolution was passed unanimously. We think it is a sensible resolution”.

Former party leader Green said the UWP was always looking for fresh strategies to move forward.

“This new executive will do just that. We will review and we will resolve to move forward into the New Year, with the best possible strategy and that includes going to parliament brothers and sisters,” Green said

Respect Edison James. 3 years he led UWP members like blind mice and had them stay away from parliament. 3 years he had the rest of the party embarrass itself in the most dishonorable manner (notice u never saw Edison’s picture in any one of the so-called protest gathering, not even in court for the recent dual citizenship case). 3 years he transformed the once ruling UWP into a political non-factor, a sterile gathering of men who were seen as merely a loose disorganized group incapable of contributing further to this countries developing. 3 years Edison robbed the young Hector John of an opportunity to address dominicans in the most honorable house and add positive value to his title of opposition leader. In three years Edison drove the UWP to political insignificance, he destroyed the party and now that he has taken it back from them, he is reviewing strategy, they will go back to the house he will look good and once again be the almighty saviour, the supreme ruler of the UWP. WEH WEH WEH…………Poor Ron, Poor Hector…….and still blindly they follow.

So you say that the Speaker has won every court case against the UWP and therefore this is a clear manifestation that she has objectively overseen the business of the House? I guess Messrs Skirrit and St Jean can also claim to be legally nominated and elected as members of parliament. Wasn’t OJ Simpson acquitted of murder?
The fact remains that the affairs of the House of Assembly has not been professionally and objectively conducted in recent times, notwithstanding the alleged legal victories of the Speaker. Legal victories by themselves do not justify arrogance, biasness, unprofessionalism, unfairness and unmerited conduct in the House of Assembly. Law possesses its own rationality, independent of morality or what may be deemed politically or professionally correct. The fusion of law and/or its legal consequences with the expected standard of professionalism, or moral correctness is wrong. This would actually threaten the rationality of the legal system, especially if the legal system cannot be relied upon for delivering timely and credible justice or it is seen to be engaged in tailored justice to a particular context or addressing specific persons or group of persons. The effectiveness of our political/democratic system (not necessarily the legal system per se) is heightened when all stakeholders-including the administration are bound by a sense of professionalism, integrity, honesty, transparency, impartiality and accountability within and outside the realm of the operational technicalities of the law.

This headline of this story is incorrect. They are renewing their non-attendance, they are going to re-strategise which will lead to attendance. If you read the details of the news item it says just that.

So why couldnt the headline be: UWP to RE-Look Their decision to stay away from parliament??

Ron Green has lost all moral authority to speak in public on political matters. He challenged Petter St. Jean on the grounds that Petter was under allllegiance, obligation to a foreign power. But Ron Green told the whole world whilst under oath in the High Court that at the material point in time in November 2009, he was under allegiance and obedience to a foreign power arising out of his own action. Ron you have gull. You suspected Petter is under allegiance to a foreign power, you cannot prove it beyond your suspicion and you took the man to court even whilst admitting to the same crime – what hypocrisy. That is why you were unceremoniously deposed by the “Ah fou Ah we posse” – Leader, PRO and TResurer among others. Even your own party saw you were dishonest and catapaulted you to the dust heap of political history

This is a classic example of Politics when Politicians have their personal agendas and not the people’s agenda who elect them, and so when their personal agenda fails or not working they do not have the fortitude and honesty to say so, instead they use fancy phrases and words “we are in the process of renewing the nonattendance of Parliament.” What utter nonsense, why can they be just honest and tell their constituents they made a mistake. I guess that is how some Politicians are, deceivers and liars.

Man like I said already, when Eddo take over the reigns UWP was going to slide their way back into Parliament. I mean you guys ain’t reading between the lines? Spags you blew it, you will regret not being a leader when you had the chance.

I remember when these guys were campaigning for the by-elections they said that if they won they would return to the House. Oh yes they returned only to swear in and collect their salaries and walked right back out again. That was very deceptive, but a lot of supporters did not catch on to that because you done know us Dominicans already, when we poto we poto to the bone.

Anyways I have spent the last few years here calling on these guys to return to Parliament and its seems they want to do so, so lets tip our hats off to them.

The difference between the lower class animals and we the higher class ones (Human beings) is that the latter has the ability to REASON. So let’s reason out.

The TACTICS to stay out of Parliament, as part of the STRATEGY to bring to the fore burning issues, has worked, because the issues of Electoral Reform among others, is being touted as important now by those who dismissed the idea and recommendations of the Electoral Commission, the opposition forces and the general Dominican public to reform the Electoral Process.

Many now agree that the Speaker is too partisan and high-handed. The opposition was charged initially almost 1/4 million dollars for attempting to ask a genuine question re. issuance of a Dominican diplomatic passport, who it was given and who paid the US$400,000.00 for that passport. Was it too much to ask of our Govt., Bon Dieu? Be fair and objective on that one at least, nuh?

Why do Trade Unions call sick-outs, protests or strikes as part of their tactics to pressure authorities and to express their concerns and/or dissatisfactions with the employer in matters of better working conditions or better pay? So all Trade Unions taking that stance are trouble-makers?

Hardly anyone has mentioned that the present DLP Govt. has disrespected the Independent Electoral Commission, responsible, by our Constitution, for the conduct of elections. About 7 years now that Commission recommended to Govt. that reforms are needed. So, plates in the kitchen sink are dirty, leave them there, do not wash them? Next meal, just take the same dirty plates from the sink and put food on them? Is OK? Is so we come, nuh?

The Commission is begging Govt. for funds needed to provide VOTER ID CARDS and to CLEAN UP the bloated VOTERS’ LIST, but Govt. has for 7 Years refused to assist the Independent Electoral Commission. Why the stalling tactics? Some political operatives have done certain things to stall the request of the Commission. That is the gospel TRUTH. We all know, without refute, about the E-mail and who it went to. But is the opposition who are always wrong not Govt. or their operatives.

Many are claiming for a return to Parliament but I have heard no calls by them for Govt. to respect the RIGHTS of the Electoral Commissiopn to receive funds to do its work to ensure that our Elections are FREE and FAIR. Many accept statements like: “Is not your damn business, where we get our $$$$$ from,” or ” No law, not even the Constitution could prevent me from being nominated.”

What about the question about Susan Olde, the issuing of a diplomatic passport and the US$400,000.00 that up to now no answer could be given? Parliament, both Opposition and Govt. decided that the Commission should be assisted to provide VOTER ID CARDS and to CLEAN UP the UNCLEAN VOTERS’ LIST. No response up till now. After all, where is our reasoning? Pressure one set, but blame the other for disrespect and high-handedness, nuh?

Nothing would change in Parliament. Govt. has not listened to and will not listen to advice, or alternative suggestions from the opposition, whether those suggestions are beneficial or sensible. Believe me. Everybody is complaining about economy bad. true nuh? But support the building of a State Palace for $27,000,000.00 when the productive sectors – AGRICULTURE, MANUFACTURING are on serious decline.

Jobs are created for non-Dominicans in construction projects, while our skilled locals remain unemployed. Be real my people. It was because of the concerns expressed by Dominicans, from opposition quarters, that a few locals are being employed in those Chinese funded projects. It was because of opposition forces out of parliament which forced those involved in the RUBBISH BIN BOBOL to pay back the Treasury thousands of $$$$$$.

It is often repeated that the political opposition has no plans, no ideas, incompetent, stupid, corrupt, but those “stupid” guys are being begged to be back in Parliament to keep Govt. in check. Where has our reasoning gone?

The Political opposition for years were demonised as being Corrupt, remember? What is the situation about the massive, repeated acts of corruption in our faces now?

Parliament is one avenue for debates, discussions on National issues, but certainly not the only avenue to express concerns, or to give advice, or to represent the people. Tactics do change. Every right-thinking people or organisation do it. So the struggle continues in Parliament, in the communities, on the air waves, in every nook and cranny of Dominica, the message will be brought to the people.

You have honestly put befor our very eye the reality as is in DA, no one can refute the gospel truth you have written, on the question of electoral reform the opposition needs to start the campaign now to prevent us from eating in that same dirty plate, we need to move to the next level and play the game on a level playing field, the opposition needs to mount an external campaign to inform the international media and the world as to the hindrances placed by the Government as it relates to our shaddy democracy in Dominica, the opposition needs to stand its ground on the slogan echoed by the now leader of the UWP “No election without electoral reform” let Dominica be the first in something.

      January 24, 2012

Very TRUE. Insightful, objective comments. In Dominica there are some people who will make you believe that 1+1=4, although they know that the statement is against established mathematical facts. They will go to the supermarket with 1 plus 1 dollars, EC$2.00, and expect to get 4 lbs. of sugar at EC$1.00/lb. The mathematical fact is that in our number system, 1+1 must be equal to 2 at all times, today, tomorrow, next month, next year.

However, in the binary system of counting 1+1= 10, read as one, Zero, meaning 0 units, and 1 line of 2. So many of my fellow men and women are blinded by falsehoods. They prefer to defy mathematical and scientific FACTS. They are afraid of the TRUTH. Some are so blindly Partisan that they harbour deep hatred for their brothers and sisters and refuse to see any light or try to understand the facts established. The opposition party decides to change tactics and the same people esp. (DLP die-hards)who were clamouring for them to return to parliament are now vexed about the idea. How so many have lost their reason?

    January 24, 2012

As a party support, I never supported the boycott of parliament. I’m pleased to hear that the decision is now being reviewed. I also hope to see an invigorated party, with some solid strategies to move the country forward. I want to hear the plans for Dominica’s development, not DLP corruption (we know all about it); I want to hear the plan for job creation, not the PM’s deception; I want to hear the plans for housing, healthcare, education, agriculture, sports and small businesses. Enough has been said about the government’s corruption and deception. The people heard and they responded clearly in December 2009; fair or not, DLP won.

The UWP needs a new strategy and I’m certain they have some people on the team to help craft a plan. There must be a well crafted strategy to unseat this government which has, in the opinion of many, done an outstanding job and have enough money and intelligence to move things in their direction.

In my sessions throughout the Caribbean, I’ve used RS as an example of an outstanding leader. I’ve made it clear, I don’t support him, but he has been able to get people to want to follow him. He comes across as caring which is one of the most critical skills people look for in their leader.

At the end of the day even if the UWP has the best strategy for Dominica, people would not support the party unless the members of the party and most importantly, the leader is seen to have the people’s best interest as heart; even if it means allowing them to get away with some wrong things. It’s no different than a typical workplace and our expectation of our boss. We all like an easy going boss we can relate to and who can understand our persol situation. It’s unfortunate, but that’s more important to most people than the overall mission. The UWP needs to understand and develop the right strategy accordingly. This is not time for back street politics, this is time for leadership; leadership from the heart. It’s time to launch “Vision 2020.” Think ahead.

Indeed, UWP should reconsider its strategy of non-attendance in parliament but it must remain steadfast to the struggle for electoral reform, equal access to the national broadcasting station and deal head-on with the arrogance, biasness, unprofessional and rude disposition of the Speaker. The Speaker’s authority must be put in check. She cannot be allowed to misuse and abused her authority with the aim of belittling the opposition members. The Speaker must be and be seen to be an impartial moderator of debates in the House. She must make and be seen to be making fair and impartial rulings on procedures of the House in strict compliance with the proper interpretation and application of the established rules. Her decisions on the conduct of the business of the House must not be punitive in nature. The Speaker should not violate the rules of the House by her arbitrary rulings on what questions can or should be asked and when they should be posed if there are no breaches of the rules. We the people of the ROSEAU VALLEY want the UWP to question our Parl. Rep. on the record in parliament of his abandonment of the people of the ROSEAU VALLEY

The Speaker has won every case brought against her concerning wrongdoing in her position. I am not a legal mind but this tells me that the lady is doing her job. We may not agree with it but she is abiding by the rules.

What UWP can do is change their attitude towards her. People naturally react to the feelings that are presented to them. If you show me vexation, I react with vexation. You show me courtesy, I do the same.

So instead of constantly looking for what she doing wrong, let us see where we going wrong. Nothing wrong in that.

If lenox was the opposition voice for the past two years in the absence of the official opposition in parliament, think it would be right to nominate him as a senator in the parliament to continue the peoples struggle, he will surely demand respect from this political bias speaker

That is how you should be representing your people in the first place. Be men of integrity and find your place in Parliament and debate the real issues….

Madame Speaker, could the Minister of Foreign Affairs respond to the following genuine questions?

      (1) Did a Non-Dominican, Susan Olde, receive a Dominican DIPLOMATIC PASSPORT in the a.m. or p.m. from the a.m. or P.M.?

      (2) How much was paid for that passport?

      (3) Where did that money go to, to the Treasury or to a Fly-By-Night NGO?

      (4) Do you know anything about the NGO, “Citizens for a better Dominica?

      (5) Who is or was the President or CEO of that NGO?

      (6) Could you point to any project undertaken by that NGO to better Dominica?

We, the people of Dominica deserve a response to that burning issue. Because we have the RIGHT to know, we patiently await your responses for the purpose of TRANSPARENCY in that matter. Please do not disappoint us again. Would I be taken to court and charged for asking those questions on behalf of the people?
