UWP sets meeting in Lagoon for budget response

UWP's parliamentary leader Hector John

The United Workers Party (UWP), with its newly chosen leader of the opposition Hector “Spags” John, will take to Lagoon, Roseau for a public meeting to review the 2010/2011 national budget.

The national budget so far has taken Dominica down a highway to more poverty, dependency and state control, according to a press release from the UWP.

“The budget fails to restore confidence in Dominica’s major production sectors, all of which are in serious crisis,” John said.

The press release stated that agriculture has collapsed, leaving farmers’ confidence at all time low. Tourism, especially the stay-over and the locally owned hotel sectors are in serious decline; low investor confidence in the policies of the Skerrit Administration is confirmed by a staggering 51% drop in foreign direct investment; highest ever unemployment, now beyond 35%  overall, whilst unemployment among youth 16 to 25 years is at an alarming 70%.

UWP also believes that violent crime in the country is now out of control with the largest number of our youths ever being killed. The most recent occurred in Marigot on July (by-election day).

The budget fails to address the serious crisis facing the country in  these very critical areas. As such, this budget rushed through parliament at a reckless speed, is taking Dominicans down “a highway to more poverty, dependency, and state control”, the party further emphasized.

The meeting is expected to begin at 8 p.m.

Mr. Hector, if those numbers you’re pulling out of thin air are true, why don’t you make a chart and at the meeting show the people what the numbers were when you guys were out of office and how good it got, when you guys got into office.

Let the people remember how everybody’s feet were in butter when UWP was in power. Oh those were the good old days!! I remember getting and turning down so many job offers. How could people give up all that wealth? Why don’t people like fountains and arches anymore? How could farmers, the youth and people in tourism forget how great things were and when given a chance to go back, choose different?

I’ll tell you why! I think it’s because people made so much money and got so rich in those five years that they felt guilty, so they deliberately chose again and again a government that is bent on returning them to poverty.

I’ve solved it, I’ve figured it out…that’s the one and only explanation!!

In many economies the world over their is a drop in revenues, so this young man should realize that the global recession would affect us here in Dominica. He missed that!

The unemployment of 35% – what tools did he use to measure this? How can a man/woman leave Haiti and come to Dominica and find a job, yet a Dominican says he can’t find one. – He missed that!

We have mountains in Dominica, lots of them and the flat lands are used primarily for housing so farmers have to use mountainous terrain……Result is lower yields/disinterested farmers – We will never get to the top with Agriculture…that wont happen…its false hope…Diversify and augment your farming with other crops. – There was once a project called the ‘Tree Crop Diversification Project’…Edison told farmers that Mamo wanted them to fail by diversifying thier crops/farms, plant all their bananas. Who laughing now…bananas failed, Mamo is dead, and Edison still ruling from behind the scenes. – He failed to Mention that One

The 70% unemployment with the youths-what tools did he use to measure this? How can a man/woman leave Haiti and come to Dominica and find a job, yet a Dominican says he can’t find one? Them young fellas (not ladies) want bikes and nice shoes and clothes…but they don’t want to work.b>He missed that!

No Government is perfect none, not even the DLP administration. Absent of perfection, I want to hear exactly UWP would improve Agriculture in Dominica. In their 5 years in office, they did what exactly to improve Agriculture? What are their plans for foreign investment-Taiwan?

Hector is going to be led down a failed path….Look at Ron Green and Earl Williams…..both are now former Leader of Opposition and both are disgraced….one more than the other.

So after he take the stage in Lagoon what outcome does he expect? That things will change. That Dominicans will vote for UWP? The place to make those statements and oppose the budget is in parlament. I don’t see what making a spectacle in Lagoon is going to do.

For this same reason why you should be in parliament. to give your imput. it’s of no use that you stay out of parliament and talk this way. and its even better that you help to improve the way of life for Dominica and it’s people. rather than all that negative talk.

Everything has to be in Roseau? Why didn’t they go to portsmouth, marigot or salisbury to have the meeting?

But that same production sector has gotten a boost from the 17M fro the EU. We are sometimes to bias.
