UWP takes budget response to the road

town hallThe Parliamentary Opposition, the United Workers Party, has decided to take its Budget response directly to the Dominican public.

This will be done through a series of town-hall meetings throughout the island beginning this week in Wesley and two public meetings in La Plaine on August 20, 2015 and Lagoon Roseau on August 27, 2015.

Dominicans are encouraged to come in large numbers to listen to an explanation of the Budget figures and the UWP’s own social and economic plans for the country.

On Friday 24th July, 2015 the Opposition Members, responded to their national duty by participating in the debate on the 2015/2016 Budget presented by the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit.

Following his presentation, the Prime Minister moved that the “House” be adjourned to Monday 27th July at 10:00 a.m., which permitted the Opposition Leader, Honourable Lennox Linton to deliver, what many considered to be a masterful rebuttal address.

Following his presentation, eight Parliamentarians on both sides of the “House” made contributions to the Debate.

At about 8:45 p.m. at the Prime Minister stood up and was recognized by the Speaker of the House of Assembly. He then proceeded to wind down the Budget Debate which effectively denied thirteen Ministers of government and seven of the ten Opposition Parliamentarians from contributing to the Debate.

This unprecedented action in the history of the country by the Prime Minister is the main reason for the Parliamentary Opposition, the United Workers Party, deciding to take its Budget response directly to the Dominican public.

“…what many considered to be a masterful rebuttal address.” DNO’s story above. Who do you trust a working government of 15 years or a six months period learning opposition leader?

God move by the opposition to discuss and share response to the budget with the public. Comrades be focus, stick to the issues, use facts and figures because they do not lie. Many of us will attend for the drama and excitement, innuendos, allegations and gossip used as stage props by our politicians, and many of us will not be influenced by such. We want positive discuss on issues arising out of the budget and how a UWP government can do it better. Then we will analyse the budget and response come to a conclusion as who is better and move on with our lives

Im pleased, after P.M. blocked that in the House. Opposition should follow the Govt. side immediately and same place where they broadcast P.M.’s budget address. That is only fair so people can make up their own mind. It is never good to hear one side only. Let the best man win. Long time the election is not over.

A precedent has been set by Skeritt and his Government, like it or not. In future, after the Prime Minister has made his presentation of the budget and a response is given by the Opposition, I believe, that should be the end of the proceeding. Usually, the debate with follows, in particular by the Government side is political mapuis. For instance, who cares about who likes breast meat or why Seekeyree should change party. Both parties should bring their messages to the people in town hall meetings as is being done presently. A number of Dominicans like the farmers, fisher folks, public and private workers who are unable to get time off, could use the town hall meetings as an avenue in order to get as much information as regards to the going on re the budget. This unceremonious action by Skeritt, might be considered a blessing in disguise by some Dominicans.

So I was waiting to hear the Arawak Budget Play like last time what happened? They were told they erred?

I know for certain that the Opposition does not hold the country’s purse; so whatever they have to say was said in the budget response already. Not because the Government is bringing Town Hall Meetings to explain the Budget more fully to the people, the Opposition believes they should do the same thing and bring their response to their supporters.

Most UWP supporters know I hope; because the Opposition will not be speaking for the DLP supporters that the UWP cannot make any financial decision for the country. The LOP gave his presentation and so were the other members of the Opposition who wanted to speak. I mean the Finance Minister waited then stood for what seemed as an eternity waiting for a member to stand and give their presentation no other Opposition stood up. So the Finance Minister gave his summation. Thank God for TV. Don’t try to tell us otherwise.

I believe that DNO should attempt to deliver news in a non fictitious manner.the opposition side of parliament failed to contribute when it was their turn to do so when it was their turn to stand and contribute to the discussion of the house.the PM stood up and waited several mins and no one from the opposition stood up.This was the perfect forum to let their view points be heard instead they had anything to say.just a bunch of bumbs.now they wana go on the streets spread more lies and untruth about the government and domica by extension.but they can’t stand in parliament cause all their untruths are exposed.sad they have so much to say on Q95 and Dno and nothing in parliament.says alot.only fools will follow this uwp.come to parliament to disucss the issue of the budget.not on the streets.

You know this is interesting. Please appeal to the pm that the VAT on Alcohol and cigarette be increased significantly since this is the only way the rumsons and Paros will stop choosing government for the hard working citizens of this country.

Lets us give people the facts. When the last speaker completed their speech on the Debate. There was a long pause and no one stood up not even on the Government side like everyone was waiting for the other to stand up. What do you expect. No one on the Government nor opposition wanted to stand. Then clearly it showed nobody else wanted to speak. What you expect the PM to do just close the debate he should wait for the five minutes for someone to get. Look at the video again. Lets not be bias. Please.

Skerrit is scared of debate and the UWP led by Linton. He should be mature enough to have his minister etc rise up to the task and debate….take the lead and allow the UWP to follow rather than this Skerrit led cat and mouse pre school rubbish

Views expressed you people must really stop spewing BS on this medium, how is Skerrit to tell his Ministers to stand up and speak?? then even you will call them little children and say skerrit is a Dictator, you people are really DUNCE!!!!

Why didn’t Lennox tell Thomson et al to stand up???

it is a democratic country boss and they chose to remain sitting so Skerrit closed the debate simple!!!!!!

    • oh really!?
      August 6, 2015

But there is a process, rules of the house. Madam Speaker should of brought that forward and verify that each side has said all that was needed to say.
Both sides are wrong in my opinion, politics is on the highest level of petty around here.
