UWP to critique national budget at public meeting

The United Workers Party (UWP) is planning to host a grand public meeting on Monday in Lagoon, Roseau to voice their analysis of the 2010/11 national budget.

This announcement was made at a UWP press conference held at the party’s office on Wednesday.

“In terms of a reasoned response to the budget, we will seek to do that at a public meeting in Lagoon on this coming Monday. We will be engaged in an analysis of the budget, and elaboration on other aspects of this press conference,” President of the party Edison James stated.

James had accused Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and the Speaker of the House of Assembly of  rushing to debate the national budget.

The $440.3 million budget was presented by Prime Minister Skerrit in parliament on Tuesday, while the budget debate continued the next day.

“It is the first time in the history of our parliament that a budget has been presented and debate on it is the next day; allowing the opposition, the media and the public no time to analyze it. And this is a clear indication that Mr Skerrit is not confident about the budget…” James stated.

    @Democratic lover:
    since when does the Crime Minister ever answer. Do you think you could get him to join a public debate.. NAh, the man is afraid of his own stupidity.

    The Labor party rushed the process, and rightfully UWP must debate it for US, their people.

    But you wouldn’t understand…. To blind to see, to stupid to understand…

    Listen to yourselves people! I really wonder what kind of contribution you all are making…?
    … just excited & satisfied to know that your pewney little weighless comments are online and read by everyone. How more pathetic could this get?

    Instead of ‘singing’ on freedom or workers or even labour, why dont we throw out ideas to them- constructive,applicable plans, that will assist them in leading our country foward.
    is that too much to type?

    Somebody help me here, are the UWP members of sound mind. Do they care about the nation? What is the meeting in lagoon going to achieve. Will the PM be there to answer questions on the budget.
    Dominicans it is time that you demand that these people earn the salary they will be receiving. They should not get paid if they do not attend parliament.

    Think about that, the UWP reacts to the leadership of the government, and in clearly defined terms, they are acting like children who just need attention, maybe, just maybe, if they had gone to the house of assembly with their little votes and acted like men, who got a seroius beating in the December 18 elections then, maybe then, they would have more knowledge of what the budget consist of. It seems to me that the results of the by elections has not added a single inch of progress to the UWP except to say that, now in their reorganization, they have decided to adjust their leadership portfolio.

    @Salisbury what I still see are DOMINICANS who are closed minded and no matter what they will not allow themselves to be educated and it is so sad one haven got to be in a class room to learn we keep learning every day so free up yourselves listen and most of all think before you condem:, how can we protest to be CHRITTIANS when we think so little of each other maybe we should all go back to the BIBLE and hear what GOD is saying to us and try to live by his words because we were never the kind of people we turn out to be today.

    @anonymous:

    As you say, let’s leave the politics out. There was NO OPPOSITION presence in the House. You are raising an issue that does not arise. Think straight, please. If there were an Opposition in the House they would have been given time. They have always been given time.

    A budget is a serious thing. It outlines how much you take from who, how much we beg from who and how much of it you give to who and what. whether you like it or not, this applies to everyone in the country.
    The people who are entrusted with the job of debating this in the house of assembly is the opposition. It is doing all of us a disservice to give them one day to prepare a response to such an important document. Furthermore, there is nothing in place to allow the opposition to get funding to source professional help. The minister of finance has a team of people with degrees in finance etc to put his presentation together.
    Let’s leave the politics out and figure out that we should run the system in a manner which can work for everyone’s benefit.

      i am a strong labour supporter my self….but i dont support the one day notice. But i think too the business of the house is serious and the opposition KNEW the budget was coming an therefore should have prepared them self and present a ALTERNATIVE BUDGET to the people of Dominica. because they spend SO MUCH TIME BLA BLAING ON RADIO AND IN “PEOPLES PARLIAMENT” yet still they cant make a meaningful contribution to the house.

      THE BUSINESS OF THE HOUSE IS SERIOUS BUSINESS AND LIKE CXC STUDENT THEY SHOULD PREPARE IN ADVANCE.BUT THE PM SHOULD GIVE THEM A LITTLE MORE TIME GIVEN THE ABILITY OF THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION.

  18. This is not TV.
    July 16, 2010

    wouldn’t that response to the budget be better in parliament where it was live and the many people who will not be able to make it to that public meet would have had a chance to hear it on radio? i wonder, everyday i wonder where has common sense gone for some of our so called politicians. The opposition had a perfect opportunity to be heard by almost all of dominica and to put forward their concerns but now only a handful will hear there issues.

  19. July 16, 2010

    Here we go again, they doing what they does best. Cool. thats De kind of interest they have for Dominica. and it’s people.

    July 16, 2010

    Why would the prime minister give one week to respond to the budget when the opposition was absent and it was the same government ministers who had to contribute to the budget.

    Common sense people. If the UWP was present in the house then the prime minister would have given the specified time to prepare. Stop being biased and stupid. Some of us know better.

    July 16, 2010

    Mr James must be real. How could he expect the budget date to start next week when there is no Opposition Leader and they are on their boycott of Parliament. All Mr James has to do is debate it at the People’s Parliament. By the way what happen to this parliament it dissolve? Why waste time debate right aftter, no Opposition . They created a moonster and now it cannot be controlled. Dominicans has seen through Mr James and the UWP already. FAIR GAME PLAY .
