UPDATED: UWP to take part in ‘People’s Parliament’

UWP leader, Ron Green

The United Workers Party, resolute in its decision not to attend the state parliament, has joined with other forces to stage the first ever ‘People’s Parliament’.

The event is carded to take place on February 4, 2010 – the same day as the first sitting of parliament since the December 18 General Elections.

The alternative ‘People’s Parliament’ is being hosted by the Movement to Restore Democracy (MRD) and the Dominica Citizen’s Forum.

According to an invitation issued by the MRD, “Opposition parliamentarians, who are boycotting the state parliament, will be joined by a number of other prominent citizens, including nationals in the Diaspora, to discuss the issues of the day. The general public is invited to hear and share their views on the important issues facing our nation.”

Meanwhile, UWP leader Ron Green said his party is awaiting a decision from the court regarding petitions filed contesting the December poll.

“We have put together all the information that we have, and we are just waiting to hear what the court says,” Green stated.

The People’s Parliament will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Garraway Hotel’s Conference Room.

PRESS STATEMENT ON DOMINICA’S FIRST PEOPLE’S PARLIAMENT

The Movement to Restore Democracy (MRD) and the Dominica Citizen’s Forum will host Dominica’s first “People’s Parliament” on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 5pm at the Garraway Hotel’s conference room.

The People’s Parliament was established as an alternative forum in light of the opposition’s boycott of the proceedings of Dominica’s official Parliament. Views will be expressed on a range of issues from public corruption to the economy. Opposition parliamentarians, who are boycotting the state parliament, will be joined by a number of other prominent citizens, including nationals in the Diaspora, to discuss the issues of the day. The general public is invited to listen and share views on the important issues of the day.

The Movement to Restore Democracy and the Dominica Citizens Forum are civil society committees which are dedicated to the promotion of democracy, the rule of law and other good governing practices. The opposition members of parliament are engaged in a boycott of parliament to register their displeasure with the manipulation of the electoral process which resulted in an overwhelming Dominica Labor Party victory in the December 18, 2009 general election.

The opposition parliamentarians intend to maintain the boycott until new elections are called with adequate provisions in place to ensure that the new elections are free and fair. The Peoples Parliament will be held from time to time. It will serve an alternative forum to ensure the survival of vibrant debate during this period of political crisis.

The best out come from this idea of a “Peoples Parliament” will be a gathering of people discussing politics, with people voicing their opinions, ideas and hopefully creating policies. This is a good thing for Dominican politics. Dominica needs to find its own political style. Who knows this may be effective in forming a new opposition party. Each person participating in the discussions will have true desire to present their vision to the people and they can be grilled for detail.

The U.WP, Freedom and the rest of the political opposition parties have no where else to go. It is obvious that some type of forum is needed in Dominica for open political discussion, with public interaction more relevant to the Dominican style of political debate. This should have less pomp and ceremony and more shirts rolled up to fore arms.

Each opposition political party has tried by itself to be heard, but it looks like they must come together some how to achieve this. Again this is very good for Dominican politics, it is a good thing to have differences of opinion, but this new group must be effective in putting forward their ideas, forming policies and becoming valid, effective opposition. They must have intelligent people that are capable of winning an argument of ideas and facts. Not just in the rum shop, but in amongst sober people. These people will be needed to hold the government accountable in Parliament.

Both the United Kingdom and the United States of America have two chambers, so things do change.

Strong Labourite, please pick on your own size, that is the labourites and the labour leaders. Not me, I am way above the gutter language you speak.

I am a hard working Dominica who has made full contribution that your Government could use to campaign on. Contribution they did not make but took advantage of to fool Dominicans.

We all know who is better than who when God opens his book, what do you think about that??? What you should be concerned about it what is written under your name in that Good Book, and by the look of your use of English, I will say a prayer for you.

    …FIGHTING in public…FIGHTING on the internet…
instead we just accept the fact that everyone has their own differences, we fight. Round the clock fighting. One side won’t accept defeat. Since December when the election finish, people bashing people. Everybody preaching about unity to the youth…unity in the society…unity will make a difference. UNITY. And then, there’s fighting…everywhere. If UWP decided they want to make their own parliament, let them be. JUST ACCEPT THE DIFFERENCES IN THOUGHT…IN DEED…
    Que sera sera…
What I still don’t get is why some people preach about unity…and how God wants unity, and then they coming and tear other people down.
AND MY GOSH… ONE LANDSLIDE VICTORY WII…saying is cheat they cheat…oh how the votes doe count properly…petition for re-election?
    ACCEPT IT…LEARN FROM IT…ATTEMPT AGAIN…
    simple as that…

To think that this is the same Ron Green who wanted to be prime minister of Dominica! He failed as political leader and Parl Repand now is trying to curry favour with the very people he failed. Ron Green, your true nature is certainly glaring for all to see. You are now politically defunct and grabbing at any straw to stay in the limelight. You even have new handlers, Singo and Sam!

Ron, stop making a fool of yourself, giving its not too late to go back to your consultancy work!

Can you imagine if the 12,000+ who voted UWP would stop contributing to this economy? I guess all of you up hear insulting people as much as you can would have a change of mentality. But, does it really have to take such an action for you all to stop thinking outside of the box.

Ron Green is right when he said the voice of the people. If 12,000 people cannot be called people then you insulting your own self because everyone was created in God’s image.

I believe alot of persons speaking have NOT YET analysed the election results, maybe its because they are afraid of the truth. But one analysis is that thousands of Dominicans DID NOT VOTE (including alot of young people who did not register) and thousands of Domincans VOTED AGAINST the Labour Party. PLUS thousands were brought into Dominica to vote for the labour party. So who is the labour party representing in Dominica???? I WONDER.

To WAIT A MINUTE and PEOPLE POWER:

I may have a pea brain, but this brain will NEVER STOOP to your level of INSULT. You can stay down there all by yourselves. NO COMPANY, SORRY.

DOMINICA has long become a laughing stock to the world especially when the PM said he gave Anguilla and Antigua money. I guess it took the same course of the bin money and Cuban students stipends (DISAPPEARED). LOL

I am part of the youth of this country and if walk around and ask you would know that the majority of youth in this country DID NOT EVEN BOTHER to register to vote.

Ron Greene is not allowing peace to prevail in Dominica, a re election is going to cause a war and a bitter one, it will divide that country of ours greatly and if the law is wise, they would stop him.

UWP have to consider the people and respect our wishes that, we do not want to go through that whole politics thing again, please rethink your actions and be the best opposition you are to win the hearts of the dominican people and gain the confidence of your supporters,

Dominican are fed up witht UWP administration, it makes us look like idiots.

    MIsa,

You seem to be a bit confuse, you said

” After all labourites vote for Skerritt, now allu want representation, all u want it too late. Why didn’t you all think about representation when you all were asked to vote for those … labour parliamentarians allu voted for??? Eh”.

Yes confuse you are indeed, honey we labourites have representation they are all ministers in the house and they will be in parliament fighting for our constituency, the fact is the people who voted the three UWP candidates who won their seats, which you maybe one of are the ones who are not getting representation so honey get your statement right when you are talking, if your candidate dont go in the house and fight for what your constituency needs dont blame us laborites, we did what we had to do to get proper representation, so instead of trying to fight us go to your rep and ask them for representation because you all are clearly not getting any and its Ron and Eddie doing.

The same diaspora they did not want to come home to vote they are now calling for their support. But we are waiting for them to return to have meeting with us again. Ron must respect the verdict of the Dominican people. He lose and will lose again anytime elections are called. Nuff Respect.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again – DEMOCRACY IS ALIVE AND WELL IN DOMINICA! As evidenced by the fact that any idiot ..can have his/her say. The idea that we need a “Movement to Restore Democracy” is ludicrous. Best they call it what it really is – pappy show come early this carnival season.

It is getting rather tiresome watching Ron and the rest of the UWP clowns, trying to cause disruption in the affairs of our great nation. But that is the price we pay to live in a “free” country. You are free to make an .. of yourself if you so desire.

The real “people’s parliament” will be meeting just up the road from the Garraway Hotel, you might want to visit and see how it is supposed to be done.

  19. February 1, 2010

One day Mr. Green and his cronies will stop the crying…shame on you all…power hungry freaks…I want to see what next after this episode…Lazy man.

    February 1, 2010

Does “democracy” allow you to make a fool of yourself? Can anyone simply jump up and do anything and say it is their “democratic right?” Does democracy provide a limit to what we can do or does it give us a carte blanche to do whatever even when it is irrational and unreasonable?

How can you call this a “people’s parliament” when the majority of the people rejected you?

    I am baffled.

    February 1, 2010

Let’s imagine next election result shows UWP or Freedom Party win and labour decide to behave like UWP, don’t accept the results, boycott parliament and set up their own “People (losers) parliament”, outside of our beloved constitution and it goes on and on, tit -for- tat, election to election, do you people realise what a laughing stock Dominica would be in the eyes of the world. These people have no regard for our constitution and our democracy and are just power hungry. ..

Now all u coming and talk about representation, allu get to know the word too late. We need a voice in this country. Not a voice that Alix Boyd Knight can tell shut up when she wants and sit down with no discretion, but a voice where the least of my brothers can be heard.

Does representation in Parliament mean going there and live a lie? What representation is this, this is representation for thieves and liars. We DO NOT WANT PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO REPRESENT US. We want persons who are worthy to represent us, and thats those we voted for. Don’t you see the list of persons who represent Labour Party are an insult to us intelligent Dominicans, take a look at the labour representatives you voted for and look at their qualifications, its a laugh. These are not representatives, the real jokers in D/A are the dunce ministers you all call representatives, take a look at their qualifications again. Even lizard and abolo can be better ministers of Agriculture because they know more about agriculture and the environment than those you all voted. A child came out from STATE COLLEGE and you voted him to represent WHO??

You all do not even know the meaning of representation. There is no representation on one side of a coin, there are two sides of a coin whether you like the head or the tail, thats a matter of your choice.

If the way labourites think was in the day of slavery, we would still be slaves today.

GO MR. GREEN, if you were alive during Martin Luther King’s time, I already see you would be standing right next to him.

This is not about winning or losing an election. Please people remove your heads from the sand, this is about TRUE DEMOCRACY, and please bear in mind, the 12,000 who did not vote labour and Mr. Green also pays the Prime Minister’s salary too so they also have a say.

    What a bunch of Jokers.
Is there any way that the three elected persons from the UWP can be deselected and allow by-elections in these three constituencies so that the people can elect new candidates that will represent them in parliament? i think that it is unfair to the people who voted in these jokers (and also those who did not vote for them) to have to go through the next five years until the next general election, without representation in parliament. Somebody should go into these three constituencies and rally the locals to call for by-elections in order to choose other people who are willing to represent them.

I can guarantee that the uwp is not interested in Dominica’s development, but the development of their party.

Let’s wait and see if they boycott it three time. They will probable boycott parliament twice and the third time go to parliament, cause trouble and will be kicked out…just like what they have done for the last five years.
