UWP wants ‘victory for democracy’

Green

It’s just hours to go before the nation is told who won the dual citizenship case brought by two election candidates of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP)  against Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit  and Education Minister Peter St Jean.

The ruling of High Court judge Gertel Thom is expected to be announced at the court in Roseau just after lunchtime Tuesday.

One of the petitioners, UWP leader Ron Green, speaking ahead of the decision a short while ago, said he hoped the court was sufficiently independent to be able to arrive at the right decision – for him that means finding in his favour and that of Maynard Joseph, the other UWP petitioner.

They allege that PM Skerrit and Education Minister St Jean held French passports when they were nominated to contest the December 18 2009 general election contrary to the laws of the land.

Green told DNO Tuesday morning that a ruling against Prime Minister Skerrit would be “a victory for Dominica’s democracy”.

He said this would also vindicate the UWP’s position that the 2009 election was a ”troublesome election” even though other election petitions to bring home that point had been discarded by the courts.

At the moment it’s not clear whether the UWP candidates and their legal representatives would appeal the judgement if they lose the case.

The UWP leader said they would study such a decision carefully before deciding on the way forward,  with cost and other factors having to be weighed before proceeding further.

There have been calls for peace from the Church and others, as the nation awaits today’s crucial judgement that could see Roosevelt Skerrit lose both his parliamentary seat and the prime ministership.

His lawyers have indicated that if Mr Skerrit loses, they will appeal the decision and apply for a stay of execution to allow him to continue in office while the appeal is being heard.

Police Commissioner Cyril Carrette, in calling for an atmosphere of peace and calm to prevail Tuesday, urged residents to stay at home and listen for the result on the radio, instead of crowding the courthouse on the bayfront and create a situation that could deteriorate and result in confrontation, especially between supporters of PM Skerrit’s Labour Party and those of the UWP.

It’s time for UWP to share the evidence with the court and not keep it only ‘between you and me’. The evidence matters in the court too, where it hurts financially!

As an observer of the political climate in Dominica. It is time that the UWP come to realize that all these filings is really a waste of time, money and effort. It is time to start a new and come up with a better plan for action. Go to the house, that absence has caused the political demise of your party. But then again, UWP was formed on a venom for Mamo and now it has come back to bite you guys in the face. What goes around does come around.
But then again, do your do, that gives the DFP more opportunity to make a big comeback.

Stop being sour losers, go to the house and represent the people who voted you in. Give Skerrit the opposition that he needs in the house.

Above all, grow up and accept defeat, wipe your wounds and move on.

YOU SAID THE RULING WILL BE IN THE INTEREST OF THE PEOPLE.

    TIME FOR RETIREMENT BOYS ?

  7. January 10, 2012

Ron Green boy, as of today the circus is over, I have not heard the results yet, but I know you have lost your case since your complaint revolves around the dual citizenship of the duo.

Whereas you could not present proof of any French Passport or citizenship papers to the court, that part of your case is already flushed down the toilet.

What have you got left, nothing, as of this day perhaps you will retire in peace, end your quest to become Dominica’s Prime Minister, your day for that has long ended; you blew the only chance you had all due to your very own incompetence!

Give it a brake man, it is all over for you, as long as old people like you keep hanging on to your old political rhetoric in the UWP, the alternative will be the complete demise of the UWP.

Retire in peace, that’s the route we all have to take ultimately!

Even Skerrit has to face that fact in the future!

Careers do come to an end you know, yours have climaxed.

I do believe the PM will prevail. It will be unprecedented for the court to be able to rule against the PM given there is no evidence to prove the UWP case. They have no passport or proof from the country the PM is said to have citizenship. So Labourites fear not you PM there to stay!

But the court must be guided by the constitution of the land and not look at the man, if it is wrong it is wrong on all counts. Whatever the court’s decision the populace must abide and go on.

Ron boy, I believe you lost the case: The fact that you could not prove the citizenship papers exist, and no french passport was introduced as evidence, and Keri nor Peter testified to this fact that they are French citizens, your case went down the gutter.

    What now Ron?

What are you going to do from here on; I am curious will you close down the circus?

    Just asking!

i find it realy funny how we use “for dominica, democracy and patriotism” when it goes along with our own politcal views. is it “patiotic” to replace the corent leader with another even if the “other” has not thought passed bash politics? is it only “democratic” if my political views coenside with yours? what good is this carefuly calculated political climate is to “dominica”? is skirro more important than Dominica? after reading all the comments, this questions comes to mind.

If Skerro loses this case it doesn’t take LABOUR out of power. It takes Skerro out of PM position. This case does not change the ruling government. It makes the persons who applied for this poisition illegally come out of office and it puts a person who is legal in that position.

For UWP to get into power they must come real good. Personally I dont see how any of these politicians on the UWP side ever being PM. I would NEVER EVER vote for any of them. They want to stay out of parliament and talk and is in parliament we need them. You see is GOD that set up and take down governments. Is God that put Skerrit there through the people and is God that will take him out when He is ready.

The BIGGEST issue here is not DLP, UWP or whoever (including the .. ahem … ‘patriots’ :-D )… it is the extortionate prices for food in the shops.

Import duty is only 30%-50% or less. That does not count for the devilish prices here in DA.

Who else is taking the BIG money from us? The importers? YES. The greedy supermarkets? YES.

These are the real enemy of DA. Price control for food. That is the election winner. Take off VAT on food for a start Mr Skerrit.

I SHOULD HAVE ALSO SAID THAT IF A PARLIAMENTARIAN STAYS IN PARLIAMENT FOR 15 YEARS AND WAS THE HOLDER OF DUAL CITIZENSHIP AND NO ONE CHALLENGED HIM THEN YOU CANT CONDEMN HIM ON THAT FRONT. BUT WHEN LOOKING AT PRINCIPLES AND INTEGRETY, THAT PARLIAMENTARIAN SHOULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND RENOUNCE THAT FOREIGN CITIZENSHIP IF THEY ARE TO BE SEEN AS A DECENT POLITICIAN. THEREFORE, NO POLITICIAN SHOULD WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO CHALLENGE THEM ON ANY DUAL CITIZENSHIP MATTER. IT IS INCOMBENT UPON THEM TO DO THE RIGHT THING. IF PRIME MINISTER SKERITT LOSES THEN I WOULD SAY HE LACKS THE INTEGRITY THAT IS EXPECTED OF HIM. WHETHER HE IS A GOOD OR GREAT LEADER, HE MUST LEAD BY EXAMPLE AND UNDERSTAND PEOPLE ARE LOOKING ON. ALWAYS REMEMBER, WHAT GORN WRONG AH MORNING, CANT COME RIGHT AT NIGHT. THINK ON THAT.

This ruling and what happens after the reading will be a test of the constitution of the Commonwealth of Dominica, the judiciary system, democracy in Dominica but most of all it will test the character of the Dominican people, so far from what I read on this board regarding this case, it is quite obvious that the character of many Dominicans leaves much to be desired. I appeal to the patriots to continue t assert yourselves, continues to register your dissent to evil, fraud, moral bankruptcy, Total disregard and defiance of constitution, criminality in high places. Continue to fight for good, legal, accountable governance in Dominica, and the restoration of integrity, decency, and morality in our beautiful Dominica.

Isle of beauty, isle of splendor,
Isle to all so sweet and fair,
All must surely gaze in wonder
At thy gifts so rich and rare.
    Rivers, valleys, hills and mountains,
All these gifts we do extol.
Healthy land, so like all fountains,
Giving cheer that warms the soul.

    Dominica, God hath blest thee
With a clime benign and bright,
Pastures green and flowers of beauty
    Filling all with pure delight,
And a people strong and healthy,
    Full of godly, rev’rent fear.
May we ever seek to praise Thee
For these gifts so rich and rare.

Come ye forward, sons and daughters
    Of this gem beyond compare.
Strive for honour, sons and daughters,
Do the right, be firm, be fair.
Toil with hearts and hands and voices.
We must prosper! Sound the call,
    In which ev’ryone rejoices,

I AM NOT A DOMINICAN BUT I TOO WOULD HOPE THAT COMMONSENSE WOULD PREVAIL AND THE COUNTRY’S INTEREST IS FIRST AND FOREMOST IN THE MINDS OF ALL DOMINICANS. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THE COURT IS BEING CALLED UPON AFTER EVERY ELECTION TO DETERMINE RIGHT FROM WRONG WHEN WE ALL HAVE THE CAPACITY TO DO JUST THAT. AFTER THE ANTIGUA ELECTIONS OF 2009, THE MATTER WAS TAKEN TO THE COURTS. A PETITION WAS TAKEN TO COURT AFTER THE DOMINICA ELECTIONS OF 2009. A PETITION WAS TAKEN TO THE COURT AFTER THE ST KITTS/NEVIS FEDERAL ELECTIONS IN 2010. A SIMILAR PETITION RELATED TO THE DISENFRANCHISEMENT OF VOTERS WAS TAKEN TO COURT AFTER THE NEVIS LOCAL ELECTIONS. I AM BETTING MY LIFE THAT THERE WILL BE CONFUSION IN ANTIGUA AFTER THEIR ELECTIONS IN TWO YEARS SINCE THE RECENT ACTIONS OF THE GOVT SUGGEST THAT WOULD BE THE CASE. I HATE ALL THESE DEVELOPMENT SINCE IT IMPEDE THE DEVLOPMENT OF THESE SMALL COUNTRIES. THINGS ARE VOLATILE IN THESE COUNTRIES AND WE MUST BE CAREFUL OR ELSE CRIME AND VIOLENCE WILL BE THE ORDER OF THE DAY.

HOWEVER, THE FACT THAT THE COURT IS BEING CALLED UPON TO DETERMINE LEGALITY OR ILLEGALITY IN ELECTIONS IN THE OECS IS TROUBLING. JAMAICA HAD AN ELECTION AND I HAVENT HEARD OF ANY PETITION TO THE COURT. ST LUCIA HAD AN ELECTION AND I HAVENT HEARD OF ANY PETITION TO THE COURT. THE BVI HAD AN ELECTION BUT THERE WERE NO PETITION TO THE COURT. DONT YOU REALIZE THAT ANY LEADER THAT DENZIL DOUGLAS HAVE ANY INFLUENCE OVER HAVE PROBLEMS AFTER THEIR ELECTIONS. PRIME MINISTER SKERITT AND DENZIL DOUGLAS ARE BOSSOM BUDDIES AND THEIR STYLES ARE VERY MUCH THE SAME. DENZIL DOUGLAS HAS MESSED UP THE ELECTORAL PROCESS IN ST KITTS AND NOW NEVIS AS WELL. WE BETTER BE CAREFUL OR ELSE WE WILL BE CREATING A POLITICAL TSUNAMI IN THE OECS WHICH WE MAY NEVER RECOVER FROM. FURTHERMORE, ANONYMOUS, THIS IS A PUBLIC FORUM WHICH IS VIEWED ALL OVER THE WORLD. I hope that the UWP and its supporters accept the court ruling as I am sure the DLP will. They (UWP)have proven over the last couple years that they are extremely sour losers. They still have not accepted their inital lost at the polls since 2000. Did the DFP do that in 1995? No … they were much bigger than that. Every since 2000 all these people have done is wage war on the country to get back into power by any means necessary; which sadly means that destroying the country in the process. These guys make me sick.

But I have heard one of the defendants and the inter-denominational committee on crime and violence asking and other supporters of the respodents ask that Dominicans remain calm in the face of the impending decison and to do whatever is necessary to maintain the peace and quiet of this land. Can somebody therefore confirm that the petitoners have infact asked for peace and respect and a disciplined disposition to the case result – win lose or draw?

I agree with you 100%.. I am totally in shock reading these people comments. Its like they are blinded by this light. This man is ruining our beloved country, but yet they still praise him.. it makes no sense at all.

    Judgement day has finally come.
Will UWP accepts the ruling of the Judge?
Will DLP accept the ruling of the Judge?
    We shall see.

Whoever does not accept the ruling, will be the one responsible for any negative fallout from the Judgement

It is not about DOminica – stop use Dominica in all you thing …It’s about SKERRITT.

If it was about Dominica all of you guys would be giving praise when praise due and bashing when bashing due. But we all know the hypocrisy… everything is all bad in Dominica…you guys didn’t give the man any praises for what he has done.

All nonsense aside – yes, he should go – because we need peace in Dominica and enough of this strife and decision.

No – he is not all bad – he has done alot for Dominica, more than other PMs…

But, the amount of negativity overshadows his good because people like you tend to hide behind the cloak of for Dominica when all you guys doing is destroying the countries image without contributing anything positively.

For Dominica would mean a better alternative. The question is – who is goign to represent FOR DOMINICA…they all raping the country…none better than the other – meme bet, meme pwel

I’m excitedly awaiting the results…. either way…. let’s hope that the people of DOMINICA will respect the courts decision and not make this turn into something uglier than it is.

I beg the people of DCA to keep cool…do not get into altercations – verbal sparring is fine…but do not let anything turn pyhsical…let peace reign over DCA today!

    I beg!

Because of his efforts at taking our beloved Dominica to the higher level as he promised,
Let it be proclaimed throughout the entire world that PM Roosevelt Skerrit should henceforth and forever be known as:

one of the sorriest losers in DA, you served with dual citizenship and when you lost you cried foul. i’m am a jean bawi and i don’t like skerritt but this is one time i want him to win because the that case to me was too hypocritical more than political.

  49. Yeah Right
    January 10, 2012

Imagine the bare face of this man who for more than 15 years sat in parliament as AN AMERICAN CITIZEN yet have the balls to take others to court for DUAL CITIZENSHIP??? You guys not easy papa.

But, then again, this is Dominican politics for you. Maybe it would just be a good thing if Skerro really looses so that we could go back to the drawing board and erase this silly law from our statutes books and level the playing field. This would surely prevent wicked, hypocrites such as Ron to play the victim here.

You and other people who constantly bleet on about Ron Green spending all this time in Parliament with duel passport make me cringe and fearful for the future of Dominica an Dominicans.
While i understand you alls argument, I simply do not see how two wrongs make it right.
All your arguments prove is how corrupt you all are because you knew he was breaking the law and did nothing, now you crying foul, why then did you all not take him to task 15 years ago. You people have example all over the world of what personality cult leaders do to their countries but still you guys are hell bent on treading that path.

      • Don't Get it!
        January 10, 2012

@Nac Vibes what are you saying that Ron he did not know he was wrong contesting the election as an Americian because he only realize that after the election, but Skerrit and Peter were diliberate in their actions. The problem with the opposition is their hypocrisy! I pray that result goes in favor of Peter and Skerrit and the government with contributions from the opposition immediately begins work on making ammends to the laws.

      • Yeah Right
        January 10, 2012

Let me as you this ‘Nac Vibes”: Why didn’t you and your hypocrite crew who are now crying foul and asking for Skerrit’s neck over this matter not bring it up for all those years (when I suppose the Party or parties you supported were in power)??? We could’ve just all agree that this is a silly law which we shouldn’t have had on our statutes book in the first place and demand that these laws be changed since they have never really been adhered to in the first place, BUT to take ONE MAN to court to make an example (JUST BECAUSE YOU HATE HIS GUTS) is simply HYPOCRITICAL and DOWNRIGHT WRONG; and I’m sure deep down in your blue, politically-motivated, hypocritical conscience you know what i’m saying is true.
