UWP will review geothermal project – John

Hector John
Hector John

Opposition leader, Hector John, has said the United Workers Party will review the ongoing geothermal project in Dominica if the party is elected to government.

In his rebuttal to the national budget John said on Friday that in the process, the UWP will always put the overall safety  and sustainable development of the people of Dominica first.

“The UWP is fully committed to the development of cheaper alternative energy to meet 100 percent of Dominica’s energy needs,” he remarked. “However the UWP will do a cost benefit analysis in order to consider and select the best and safest option.”

He pointed out that these options will bring the most economic, environmental and social benefits to the island.

According to John the UWP will approach the geothermal project ‘step by step’ and will probably start with a two to five megawatts pilot plant. “This would allow us to do the necessary scientific monitoring of geothermal development in Dominica over a five to ten year period and assess the impact on the local economy and communities,” he said.

He said that at the same time, emphasis will be placed on “similar investments in the development of our hydro resources, not only for electricity but also for water security, revitalizing the agricultural sector and food security, reforestation, soil restoration and combating erosion…”

The opposition leader stated that based on the analysis of the potential risks and benefits to be derived from the development of Dominica’s geothermal and hydro resources, he believes starting with a small geothermal plant “and an expansion of our hydro resources of five to ten megawatts in the interest of the Dominican people, the United Workers Party realize that this is a safer more realistic and more beneficial energy development alternative.”

In his budget presentation prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, said government has already spent $67.7-million in exploring Dominica’s geothermal potential.

The project hit a major snag when reports surfaced that Electricite de France (EdF), a main partner, had withdrawn its participation from it.

In June Skerrit led a delegation to France to seek financing for the project and he subsequently said Agence Francaise Development (AFD) is now prepared to finance a 15 megawatts plant in Dominica for domestic consumption.

In his budget speech, the prime minister said after the construction of this plant, there will be a drop in electricity prices. “The current analysis suggests that consumers can expect to see a decrease of some 40 percent in the price paid for electricity in Dominica,” he said.

    OK!

So where’s the rest of the speech that really addressed the PM’s LAZY MAN BUDGET?

If this is the most major point of the rebuttal, then alas, i sorry for Dca.

Damned if they do, damned if they dont.

Bunch of losers all of them – Labour and UWP.

NO option is the better option! It’s now a matter of fight for the bottom.

    NegBawi.

I see you and UWP have still not learnt anything, in your 13 years out of Office.

“UWP to rethink Geothermal, if elected to office”.

Well with that mandate, UWP will not be elected to Office.

Yet again more Party Politics, before Dominica.

Geothermal as a renewable Energy source and income generated, is a No Brainer.

What UWP should be looking is the generation and distribution contracts that have and are being signed.

Dominicans, be wise this election. Don’t merely vote for dimples, looks and handouts.

The PM has taken Dominicans for fools. Don’t give him another opportunistic to reap havoc on the economy.

Sklerit does not have a good handle on the economy. Lonnox is a better leader.

I believe Lennox will be a better PM.

Those of you proposing an international airport, please list the islands in CARICOM with international airports and who built them and under what circumstances these were built. Let us know the cost of building one and the source funding. If that was an easy venture previous governments would have done it.

I would really like to know the size of plant that is required. DOMLEC would help with that answer. Mr.John is talking about 2 to 5 megawatts the PM is talking about 15 megawatts. Who should we believe?
I think Mr.Johns thoughts are not current because, if one observes global environmental trends one will notice that hydro powered electricity is certainly not the way to go. The volume of water in the rivers is decreasing and our river resources are vulnerable. Let’s use the water for aqua culture, export, irrigation and recreation.
We should explore the use of solar and wind both at domestic and national level.Barbados have done very well with solar, so can we.

It is always amazing to red some of the comments, and response by some people on DNO.

I am left to wonder if there are any intelligent people left in our country. I believe there are intellectuals who would like to contribute their opinions, however are reluctant to do so because of the rubbish they read, and are to ashamed to submit their thought among such trash!

I know people who have contributed certain thoughts, sound and intelligent as their comments were, they were never posted, that leaves the impression that the person (s) who clear the comments for posting seem not to be interesting in comments, which makes sense, however, we find plenty of nonsensical , or outright ignorant one line sentiments posted.

It is supposed to be educational, and informative; that however is not what we have here.

I read the comments of Hector (Spags) John, he identified areas which the UWP will review if the party is elected, he did not promise to shut down any project as the Labor Party had done, when the kept their promise and stupidly shut down the International Airport that was practically under construction when the coalition siege power twenty years or so ago.

John also identify to review safety, and sustainable development: His critic, Ambrose George responded under the caption “Come Again.”

I ask what nonsense is that?

According to what I read as stated by DNO, I doubt that was the full contents of Hector’s speech; however there is more substance in what I read here on DNO, from John, than all of the nonsense that Ambrose spoke.

What do we find though is that someone supposedly an “A Douglas”, whoever that is, and others think that Spags has done a poor job with his presentation.

What happens to the garbage Ambrose spoke?

John comments are more effective in comparison Ambrose!

Spags is yet in his youth, the future of Dominica rest on the shoulders of young men, and women such as Spags, and others. These are the people who should be elected to run the country, the youths who are ambisious may bring about some changes to the country. Ambrose is an old man his kind serves no other purpose than an obstacle in the way of development in our country.

It was a bunch of old men like him who are stock in their backward ways who could not see a vision of Dominica with an International Airport, they will all go to their grave, leaving a legacy of backwardness for the youths of Dominica to inherit.

Wake up people, wake up, “the young may; but the old must.”

Chances are green limes will fall off the lime tree, however, It is mandatory for the ripe and yellow limes to fall off the tree.

The power of the nation is in the hands of the youth, it is time for these old tired politicians to take a rest. Edison James and the Pestana lady is a mark of a good example, these other old obstacles should go home and be at peace with themselves. I know some people, especially the Labor Party supporters will be offended, but I could careless politics is not what I am about, I am about the best thing for my country!

DNO wether you print this or not, it will be on some other forum within five minuets!

A Douglas…someone wrote in a previous post and I would like you to read it, if you haven’t..

Just Reading wrote, “I am sick and tired of our trying to degrade an individual based on his educational background. We have seen leaders with no degree lead well, because in most cases in leadership, it is not paper or book smarts that works, but rather common sense.

I have listened to Lennox and for a a man with no degree, as you claim, he is putting most of us with degrees to shame.

The man is eloquent and cogent and his oration and writing are far beyond most individuals who holds degrees in our society.

Have you read The Chronicle lately and see the rubbish and illogicality that political prostitution has led some people who are schooled in the finer concepts of education to write? Have you listen to a particular talk show and hear the nonsense that a schooled Doc presents as sound reasoning?

Were O.J Saraphine, E. O Lebalance and Mike Douglas, once acclaimed members of the Red Party, have degrees? Yet, even you would resound their keen leadership. So, why so many people on the RED BOAT are trying their uttermost best to pass Lennox as a fool due to his lack of a degree, when we are constantly bombarded with the nonsensical verbiage of so many educated fools in high positions in Dominica.

In fact having a degree has just become an awareness in Dominica’s politics and even the constitution has not addressed that matter…so, why do you try to fault the man just because he has no degree. If many before him were eligible to run for the office of PM without a degree, why can’t he!

Lennox may not hold a degree, but he is intelligent, cogent and well-read, and he is drenched in common sense, and for these reasons alone, I would vote for him as opposed to all those who want to denigrate him due to his lack of obtaining a degree…..

Let do this small test, call any body who has never heard Lennox before, and ask them, if this man speaks and present himself as a man without a degree, and I am certainly sure that he/she would tell you straight..NO!! and you can take that to the bank.

A man who have no degree, but can past as one who has one through his speech, writing and ideas has done good for himself and is indeed MUST be admired…so, stop you all rubbish about Lennox being un-degreeed and hence cannot hold the office of PM.”

I hope A DOUGLAS, you put you so well-educated leader to the test as suggested by Just reading…

nicely written, and to prove your point Lennox comes across as more educated than Spaggs with his degree in journalism (i think that is what it is). A degree does not prove anything other than you have gone through formal training in a particular area. One with a master’s in Mechanics may have a level in English comparable to a 3rd form highschool student, especially if that high school student does lots of reading.

I am leaning towards the UWP this time around, but people, you must agree that Mr. John lacks the cogency, confidence and the eloquence required to be viewed as a candidate for leadership of a country.

I listened to his speech and it was extremely incoherent..even Mr. Bazil and Mr. Isidore spoke and handled content better than he….It is no wonder, Skerrit et al want him to be the leader of the the party into the next election; they know his confidence and capability are dimmed in comparison to Skerrit’s…

Hope, the UWP would put Lennox as leader,
UWPites do what is right and put Lennox at the helm of your party…those who will be happy if you do so would definitely surpass those who won’t ..moreover, you action who make some people who are already vex by the rumours of Lennox’s leadership, brick-red in both their hearts and their faces…

This lack lustre address from Hector John sounded like the online UWP MANIFESTO with a lot of rhetoric but void on substance and creativity. The essential issue is How are you going to generate funds and resources outside of what this DLP Government is doing to grow the economy ?

It is regrettable that the applaud meter from the opposition side of the house was a deafening silence; this is the vote of no confidence that they had in his presentation. Hector succeeded in doing one thing; Strengthening his lack of confidence that the rank and file membership of the UWP has in him.
I feel very sorry for this obviously unprepared gentleman ; Spaggs was obviously very nervous and his tone was one of serious mental confusion. Lennox Linton must be smiling on this hopeless presentation and is expected to give his own technical spin on it especially when we are all aware the this non degreed pseudo-intellectual may have assisted in certain aspects of the badly read script of Mr. John.
I do believe that the UWP ought to sat as a group and they should seek the services of respectable intellectuals to assist them in Budget-Response Presentations. Clearly UWP cannot take this heap of Voodoo-Economics to the Electorate. The Glanvillia People have just concluded an amicable resolution with cabinet on there Land dispute. This tells you that the Dominica Electorate is very sophisticated and intelligent and objective and will never allow their political slant to dictate their views on bread and butter matters and National development on a whole. It is this issue that will continue to frustrate the UWP who is like a ship without a Sea Worthy Captain and a very contaminated cargo and poorly equipped ship.

I do hope that those who care for the UWP do some serious soul searching and seek new and proper educated leadership. It was quite embarrassing that UWP Parliamentarians had to seek the permission of the Speaker to read their presentation. What is this opposition coming to ? Its laughable that they are not familiar with the material that they have, due to the fact that “authors of propagandistic outbursts, laden with the saw of deception’ continue to hand to them Prepared scripts.

There is a serious leadership vacuum within the UWP and LL is not a proper choice.
    I FEEL SORRY!

non degreed pseudo-intellectual?what is education, A Douglas?Education in its general sense is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or research. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of others, but may also be autodidactic.[1] Any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational.

Remember his 24 hours sleepless nights negotiations with the Chinese? We can count on one hand how many poor and indigent Dominicans it eventually put to work.

Look at where Dominica is situated in the West Indies, smack bang in the middle. We have fertile soil and water unlike most of the other islands. So it does not take a genius to see that what we should concentrate on is agriculture. We need to grow food so we can sell it to the other islands, someone be it the government or the private sector need to invest in a proper cargo boat.that way we can actually sell our produce and our water overseas, this is step one.But even before that we need to invest in our farmers, build feeder roads, provide loans and grants and educate and train farmers in the latest techniques in agriculture. then we need to look at the tourism industry ,we need to station properly train men and women around the different tourist site on the island so tourist can feel safe and get assistance when needed. all that will lead to JOBS,JOBS,JOBS and everything else will follow.

It will be “REVIEWED”. TRY NOT TO AVOID THE WORD
“REVIEWED” AND go to your dictionary for its meaning.
That’s why Skerrit is taking you all for fools like that. He said it will be “reviewed”.

You must be an embicile not to understand what “reviewed” means to a politician? % you are the one being taken for a fool by the UWP since you are so daft you cant even read the line farless for between the line. Spit in the air and it falls on your nose.
