UWP’s lawsuit against Speaker’s decision a non-issue – AG

Attorney General Royer

Dominica’s Attorney General says the vacating of two seats of the United Workers Party (UWP) in parliament is a non-issue.

The UWP has decided to take to court, a decision by Alix Boyd-Knights, Speaker of the House of Assembly, to make their Salisbury and Marigot seats vacant.

Attorney general Francine Baron-Royer says she sees no justification for the UWP’s decision to challenge the matter.

“I think that the law is clear, unless they can show that they in fact requested and got leave of the speaker, to be absent or they were not informed of the sittings of the house and I don’t think that is the case,” Baron-Royer said.

She says however the UWP has the right to got to court once they desire.

SOME comments here make no sense… everyone knows that the UWP chose to stay out. They have no justification – if by seating out for 3 consecutive meetings they were aware that their seats would be in jeopardy. The law should prevail and Alx did not make the law. They made their beds, they chose to show their disrespect to their electors by choosign to seat out. It would have been more successful had they gone in and made their voices, and their disappointments heard as opposed to sitting on the sidelines complaining.

I say that Dominica does not need any coward leaders. If somehting is wrong you try to fix it the best way you can. What's the point of seating out when your voice can't be heard where it is needed to be heard? The peoppe of Dominica had spoken- it was the UWP's place to go the Parliament and make their voices heard and account for somehting, not to seaton the sidelines to jeopardise their one shot at being heard. Now that their seats are in jeopardy they are blaming others. They need to blame themselves… even the young Mr Giraudel called them fools.

This AG was selected by PM Skerrite, because she knows nothing,,,,just another person he can twist around his finger.

This is so sad. That same AG was a lawyer in the case of the lands in the Laurent case…now she is AG, trying to turn things opposite.

What is D'a coming to? that next level is so low eh.

The Sppeaker did not vacate the seats as stated by Diaspora. The Member for Marigot and the member for Salisbury vacated their seats. The Speaker only stated the obvious. She is in charge of matters pertaining to the House.

People, people, why Blame the AG or the Speaker of the House or the PM.? When Ron Green gave in interview to the Media two weeks ago Mr. Ron Green said and I quote ” The Dominica Constitution is old it was written over 30 years ago, before Independent.” I heard him with my own ears!
The UWP Members new the risk they were taking, why in the PAST, the then Member for WESTLEY always made it for every seating of the House even if he is living and working in the USA, now, because UWP we are all at each others throat, and they are going back to COURT again, it is our Tax money they are wasting, we are working hard for a better Dominica and few People are trying dere best to make sure that never happens, God help us all.

Rose/diaspora your comment is attacking the AG, not on facts but on the statements they made regarding the many court issues brought forward by the UWP. Furthermore, if the Speaker has no power to vacate the seats, why do the members send letters/communication to him/her seeking leave or to inform the speaker of their absence? Just because they want to?

AG – Francine Baron-Royer if you a so sure that the spaker was right under the LAW and I am sure you were refering to the CONSTITUTION of DOMINICA therefore I would suggest that both Senior council and yourself stop promoting yourselves and allow the COURT to do their job because that is the only way to bring the issue to an end I am tired of you all explanations and not one can tel me where in the CONSTITUTION that I will find where the speaker of the house have the power to vicate any one seat which section it is written, it is time that you all stop treating us DOMINICANS as fools.

Mrs. Baron-Royer, please stop manipulating the law as you see fit. You guys know full well that there was no justification for the vacation of seats. You know that all of this was done so that this administration could call elections in the Salisbury and Marigot constituencies. What I want to ask Dominicans is this, `Are you ready to become a little Venezuela?
