UWP’s presidential nomination receives cold shoulder

Attempts by the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) to nominate jointly, with the government, a candidate for the presidency of Dominica did not materialize, according to UWP leader Lennox Linton.

Addressing a UWP rally on Sunday Linton said the party had chosen Dorothy Leevy as its nominee for head of state and wanted to contact prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit to agree on nominating her jointly, but it came to nothing.

“Hector John, the leader of the opposition, from Friday afternoon has been trying to get in touch with Roosevelt Skerrit by phone to tell him that the opposition leader wanted to sit down with him, the prime minister, to talk about a joint nominee because we don’t agree with Savarin,” he said. “We waited for their unconstitutional fourteen days for nomination to expire before we took this step.”

Linton described Leevy as an “upstanding woman of impeccable integrity who served with dignity and grace in education.”

“We have asked for her permission,” he stated. “She has given it to us to put her name forward as a joint nominee with the government.”

Government’s nominee, Charles Savarin, is to be elected in parliament on Monday (September 30) morning.

Linton said the UWP will not allow the election to stand and a protest meeting is planned in Roseau on Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Leevy has topped a DNO poll in which readers were asked to state their choice for president of Dominica.

The former principal of the Convent High School received 35% of the total number of the votes cast; former Ag. Chief Justice of the OECS Supreme Court came second with 33%; cultural icon, Alwin Bully, got 12% while 10% of those who voted chose government’s nominee Charles Savarin.

A total of 2,236 readers voted.

DNO polls are not scientific.

These short words are great since they really add up for a score inside end and so they also limit the words your opponent can build off on.
As my brother Jamar Booker explained, men value young, attractive, healthy, faithful, and nurturing women.
So, in case you inform your attacker whom you suspect is cheating that you
would like to make your move every one day and he / she forfeits the action, it may mean that
your assailant is by using a Scrabble cheat board or anagram
    solver.

Is it any wonder where Dominica is today with this politics?

The concerns for the country seems to be irrelevant in alot of these comments that are posted.

I thought people fought for what was best for their country going forward. But from my perspective here it is all about party politics and various individuals which is sad.

One thing that man should always remember that no matter what God is who appoints leaders, and he admonishes that we should respect and prayer for our leaders instead of all this bashing, name calling and slander do yourselves a favour and prayer for your own no matter who it is.

It is very shameful the way Dominicans are behaving in this situation

I know Dorothy Leevy and feel confident that she would have made an excellent president. She is well educated.
Some of you who know her will recall she was a Principal at the Convent High School.
Is she a supporter of UWP? Well, this would not prevent me from being friends with her and continuing our friendship. She is a nice person and a qualified one.
It would have been a big decision to choose one of them for the presidency.

For a government that have so many inconsistencies ..i find the opposition is as twice as weak…and Dominica’s real problems is the opposition..I mean soo many errors are made and the opposition cannot capitalize..they want to attack Skerrit every day for over a decade. For the love of Country UWP should be dead and buried.Because if this administration is questionable as they say..God forbid what they would do if they get a chance.

  13. what i say is true
    September 30, 2013

Well, I do believe the Opposition has dropped the ball on this one…. One of the true qualities of a Leader is the ability to organize, mobilize and lead; from the front…not from the rear…That’s one of the problems that I noticed with the old UWP leadership…They exhibited an ineptitude in their style of leadership abilities and the manner in which they went about communicating the issues to the people, in my humble opinion, they were not very effective…. I pray this will change under this present Leadership…I am quite willing to give them a chance… But alas, I must confess in this particular matter, they blew it…In no and certain terms should the roadblocks, barricade, guns and Police deter the will of the People… So therefore, I must ask the question…Are the People of Dominica ready for change in their Country?… Or is it going to be business as usual… Really, were they against the Hon. Charles Savarin becoming the President of DOMINICA?…Did the will of the People prevail?…..I do believe the wind of change has arrived on the shores of Dominica and is blowing a slow and steady breeze that will get stronger. The time change is now. Whoever the Opposition is, has to seize this moment, hoist their sails and don’t look back…

But,it is not a Labour thing, nor is it a UWP or Freedom thing… It should always be a DOMINICA thing… What I mean is you are a Dominican first, and anything else should come after…So therefore, your vote is a fundamental right to effect change in your Country and it should never be compromised…for no reason whatsoever!

The next Leader who emerges from Dominica must demonstrate that He or SHE has the ability to unite the people…Bring everybody to the table, whether you are Labourite, Freedomite, UWPite or whatever you may be, you should be welcome to the table…YOU must be able to bridge that gap…There is too much division and disunity…We can never build a Nation on this foundation.
Dominica is, and should be for all Dominicans. We all must eat and afforded the opportunity to prosper and enjoy our prosperity in our homeland…..Look here, for a People to unite, there must be a commonality of interests, and what better time for Dominicans to come together for good of Country, than now?

If therefore you do not like the way your Country is being governed, or, if you do not like the way things are in your Country, then you have the Right and the obligation to change it…That, ultimately, is up to you the People…. Remember, the Power of the People is always greater than the People in Power….

Kind regards… and…All the very best to all.

    The Uptown Rebel.

Sounds like you are the perfect challenge to Lenox Linton for the Leadership of the UWP.

Failing that, make a balanced assessment of the improvements we “Dominicans” have made on ‘so many fronts including, the Economy, Health, Education, Agriculture, Tourism, housing and socially and politically, to name a few – oh! I forgot to mention Dominica’s International Standing – .

The present leadership continue ‘to Meche the BOUSAY’ ROSIE and PIERO held aloft to show us the way.

Help DOMINICA progress by joining the vehicle of economic and social change to make the best use of your ‘obvious’ talent.

Sorry to disappoint you comrade… Oops there I go again… Didn’t mess to call you that, but I never said I was a UWPite….But I do believe it is time for change. Therefore,I will use my vote to effect that change….Why don’t you think it over and join me?

Anonymous, the process for electing a president according to the constitution should have started in 2nd July, why didn’t they do so…where were you ? That 8pm Spags John entertained them, he is a patriot….now acting in good faith with the belief Skerrit and his clowns would return the honour they blocked the process again because at all cost they wanted Savarin… Give me a break. Dorothy Leevy was not nominated by the UWP. The story you wrote spoke for itself. They did not say that they had a written consent from her. In any case they did not submit her name to the speaker as required by the constitution.

The PM is just showing his true colours. Isn’t he for the empowering of Women? So why is he refusing this nominee? Is the ayatola more politically bias free than this distinguished woman? Skerro listen to the people. It is not about Linton or UWP it is people from your own camp who displeased and upset with that choice.

I know that both you and the ayatola were converted and are enjoying the fruits of the labor of true labourite, but please don’t be so arrogant but instead stop and listen to the men and women who took this party from the dust to where it is today. If you could only understand what it took to build this institution, you would not have never even thought of an absurd idea as this. It was this man that in the first place who brought the party to the dust by his action in the 1970’s. Then it took people Rosie, Pierre and other to get up and running again. And today you are saying to me that this Judas is the best you can nominate for Dominica. The Labour greats must be turning in their grave. Still don’t understand what this guy is doing in government after losing in 2005. But because the PM doesn’t trust the labourites, himself coming from a freedom party background he kept him around to watch his back.
Dominicans need to stand and say no to the dictatorship style of governance that we are heading to.

Leadership does not require any academic qualifications…Neither is this a requirement stated in the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Dominica…

Look at the mess that the Country in in right now, have a look at the mockery that these people have made out of themselves and the ability to “lead”…and govern….”unqualified?”…Give yourself a break, give Dominica a break…We need to vote them out!!!!
Irrespective of your political affiliation, Dominicans need to come together with one accord and vote for change in their Country…Now is the time…And I am speaking as a “big Laborite”!!!!but I will not vote for these people that are there now…no way shape or form…Mista them too corrupt and have done “too much”…(for themselves).

Can’t you feel and see the deplorable state that the Country is in?…Everyone is crying the same cry…C’mon, we need to unite…That commonality of interest, now exist, it IS up to US now, to come together for the good of Country….Your Country need you my friend…Join the ‘un’ with the ‘qualified’…put them together as one and “vote” against the so called “qualified” ones… in order to effect change in Our Country….Friend, the time is..NOW!!!!

        September 30, 2013

Well – it did say that they are to submit in writing to the Speaker of the house – so calling Skerritt on friday night won’t do anything.

And besides – that’s section is on the bsis if they do not agree on a nominee before hand. the first logical step would be propose their nominees . Eveyrtime the PM chose someone, they didn’t liek it – yet they offered no alternative. We the public had no clue who at any stage their nominee would have been.

so the last minute is definitely their fault.

we are suppose to oppose all nominess presented by Skerritt but they never once, until now, proposed someone.

and all this is under the cloak of – waiting for the constitutional 14 days.

is like going to court without a defense and saying you are waiting for the applicant/appellant to put forward the enitre case then you’ll have a response.

After all You all stay till the last minute to come up with someone and have the guts to say “We waited for their unconstitutional fourteen days for nomination to expire before we took this step?”. I am not a labor supporter but as an opposition we need to learn to do things right. The way my new leader of the opposition is behaving will cause me to turn my vote over to the other party of choice. get a life and do things right man and set an example for other to follow

People are at work so who are you going to get to come to the meeting. If you were listening you would hear Lennox’s point. We have no choice if he wants to install this man but we will protest. This is the only thing we can do. We are not going to fight war with Skerrit now, we will do that at the poles.
