Veteran UWP politician defends Lennox Linton

Prevost says he takes great pride in Lennox Linton
Prevost says he takes great pride in Lennox Linton

Member of parliament for Roseau Central, Norris Prevost, has come out in defense of the leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, who is currently embroiled in a controversy concerning allegations of plagiarism.

“As a Member of Parliament for 25 years and one who has followed Lennox Linton from his roots, I am very proud of Lennox Linton,” he said on Friday.

Prevost stated that he takes pride in Linton because of his “strength of character, his leadership, his experience, and the many attributes cited by The Chronicle for selecting Lennox Linton as The Chronicle’s MAN OF THE YEAR 2012.”

“The very high esteem in which I hold Lennox Linton, is endorsed by The Chronicle of 7th Dec. 2012, in their citation of him,” Prevost said. “Linton’s emergence as the conscience of the nation has not been easy. He has been vilified by his detractors. He has effectively been denied employment by the authorities or by anyone associated with them. He has reportedly received veiled threats by shadowy individuals. Many persons ostracize him for the simple reason that he has refused to stay silent or diverge from his principled opposition to government wrongdoing.”

Prevost cited The Chronicle saying, “And so, for his pro bono, herculean efforts to preserve our democracy; to make all our law enforcement officers live up to the high principles of their office; to bring to justice those who have committed heinous crimes against the state and its people, and for his efforts to preserve and uphold the provisions of Dominica’s constitution, The Chronicle selects journalist Mr. Lennox Linton as its Man of the Year for 2012.”

Prevost further cited The Chronicle noting, “In our struggle this year to preserve Dominica as an independent democratic republic, no voice has been as articulate, unrelenting and uncompromising as that of journalist, Mr. Lennox Linton. He has meticulously chronicled the failings and manipulation of the justice system. He has challenged and indeed forced the Integrity in Public Office Commission to live up to its statutory mandate to ensure integrity in public office. He has exposed highly questionable government procurement practices even when those charged with oversight responsibilities have maintained their silence…”

Prevost is now calling on the prime minister to stop what he described as “gutter politics.”

“PM Skerrit’s gutter politics dirties Dominica’s name, and Dominican citizens of all works of life and of all political colours should call on Mr. Skerrit and his DLP cabal, to stop the gutter politics,” he said. “At the recent presentation of the Budget in Parliament, Mr. Skerrit called all Dominicans who support the Workers Party ‘dishonest,’ and now his further deterioration into calling Mr Lennox Linton and the United Workers Party “bastards”, is a clear demonstration that Dominicans deserve a person of better character than Mr. Skerrit, for Prime Minister. Mr Skerrit’s dirty tricks of looking in the mirror seeing himself, reflecting on his own serious flaws of character, and from his Psychology class 101, trying to pin these flaws on his opponent, are now overused, and sinks him and Dominica, lower in the gutter each time he uses it.”

“As one of the most senior members of parliament, I call on Mr. Skerrit to stop dragging our beloved Country into the gutters,” Prevost said.

The UWP has thrown the leader of the Party under the bus, by allowing him to continue the way he has been since becoming leader of the party. He has not change from being a talk show host to the leader of a political party. There is no way the party can make me believe they care for his type of leadership. The man seem to be on his own and they are all waiting to see him self destruct and he is doing a very good job of it.

Didn’t the member for Roseau have another candidate for the leader of the party? Didn’t the deputy leader felt betrayed when he was not the chosen one and told us how better suited he was for the leadership of the party by listing to us his education and qualifying credentials and I can not recall he mentioning the leader’s name at that time?

What the two have said in their suppose support without dealing with the issues at hand told us much more by what they did leave out.

There will be a power struggle if the UWP were to ever be the government. I hope you noticed, I did not say were to win the elections, that in my view is impossible.

Our Constitution by the way does not say outright the Leader of a Party in Opposition must be the Prime Minister if they were to have a majority in parliament. I do not think it is automatic. It may seem so;, but I doubt it; and I think the UWP leader know that and that could be the reason for all his outbursts. He is taking them down with him. Maybe someone can tell us whether our Constitution says the leader must be or is automatically the Prime Minister without the consensus of all the members on the same side.

Something worth following, I cannot see where these two gentleman would rally for their present leader to be the Prime Minister of Dominica. Being the leader of the UWP party and being the Prime Minister of Dominica are two entirely different positions.

In My posting on 14 September, I was very critical of Mr Lennox Linton for his theft of portions of the speech by the St Lucian but I was frankly embarrassed by this recording https://soundcloud.com/dominique-dominica/sets/skerrit-plagiarism. So to you Mr Skerritt and the labourites, I will simply quote Peter Tosh, The Jamaican reggae icon, “if you live in a glass house don’t throw stones!” This however does not make what Mr Linton did correct; but for our PM to do so at such a level, Dominicans need to chase him from office. Even more so, his pronouncement at lagon, leaves us with no doubt that he knew what he was doing was wrong, whereas for all the accusations about Mr Linton’s lack of University degrees, he can simply feign he did not know better!! Mr PM, even Jesus waded in on the controversy when he asks the accusers of the lady caught in adultery, ‘he who is without sin let him cast the first stone’, so my PM I hear the sounds of distant drums, calling you, calling you. Listen to Peter Tosh, there is some wisdom there!!!

pm Skerrit there is too much focus on Linton why are you all making him so famous.? I listened to that meeting last Thursday and every one keep asking him to go, go where he is not anywhere. I am a strong supporter of the DLP but you all need to refocus. If Linton want to run dirty let him.,but don’t stoop to that level please there is still enough work to be done. please, please do not stoop to the level of the UWP.

Plagiarism is a word politicians that are in trouble usually use against their opponent when all other methods used have failed. Hillary Clinton tried that against Obama in 2008, during the Democratic Primary, when she accused Obama of plagiarizng a speech by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick. She failed, just as Skerrit must fail. However, Gov. Patrick said in a statement he and Obama are friends, and said the allegations were just attacks by Clinton. That’s exactly what the leader of the St. Lucia UWP said about his long time friendship with LL. Skerrit and his DLP are in serious trouble and that’s why he just cannot call the election so he trying to see what new tactic to use. He in serious trouble!

Could not have said it better myself Mr. Prevost. Here are some other famous quotes from our disgraced pm…..

    “Dominicans are too free”
    “Go to Hell”
“It is none of all you damn business where labour party getting money”
“There is no law or constitution that can stop me Roosevelt Skerrit from being nominated as the representative for…..”

    How quick D’cans forget.

If any political figure in any one of the many democratic nations in the world would have many any one of these statements… That would be the end of their political career.
But this man still holds the highest office in our blessed land.

Deliverance for DA is a must and is coming.

Very disappointed with Lennox Linton, leader of the UWP and his verbatim theft of the language used by the St Lucian. I can understand the St.Lucian’s stance that he does not consider the theft plagiarism, because he is trying to limit the damage to Linton and the UWP but it is not his to define plagiarism.

Linton as a prospective PM of Dominica has severely damaged the UWP. Linton a man who has been admired for his oratorical skills has now exposed as a fraud. He could have avoided this embarassment by simply giving credit to the St Lucian UWP team claiming that they stand together and share similar ideals.

Blind support for him seems misplaced, understandably, it is typical that the party would rally around its embattled ruler. I however believe that he is now damaged goods and is more a liability to the UWP than an asset, he should be removed from the helm of the party and a less controversial figure installed. If the UWP looses the next election it can look back at the inane comments of Danny Lugay and the theft by its leader as determining factors. UWP had so much momentum, now it will quickly fade and the election will be called as soon as the effect of the theft starts to reach the voters.

Really it is clearly a lack of political agendas befiitig a nation that so much tme is spent o the issue of plagiarism.
What of the other relevant issues ..size of cabinet -number of constituencies ..waste of funds to IPO ..NON APPOINTMENT OF THE OMBUDSMAN as demanded by our constitution for over 35 years !
Certainly Lennox should know that to copy speeches from anyone without giving credit is a no no !
However all dominicans are aware that lennox has demonstrated the glibnes ,menatal agility, gift of the gab and specchifying abiliities without question !
Indeed it is that gift which made him a leader of his party
Plagiarism yes ..poetic license yes ,but this was clearly laziness and the mistaken impression that thoughts of similar mind did not require a recalibration of the language rather than copy the words uesd by someone who is less able than Lennox himself in the department of words and language
Obviously the words and languauge was not particularly Churchilliean or Martin Lutherish ..the language copied from a very long speech was an occasioal sentence here or there which was not very illuminatimg but was rather mundane and innnocuous!
Linton should know that the internet world has changed it all ,,memories and information are indelible
HE SHOWED LACK OF CONSCIOUS ATTENTION to the capacity of research by the oppsing party and a weakness of overconfidence and plain laziness to reinvent words strikng at the same vein of an idea ..clearly easily within the abiliites of of Linton.
Sad that UWP must defend their Leader in an area where his abiliites are patently strong as a reporter speech writer radio talk show host of Caribbean renown
Lesson to be learnt here .. always use your god given talents to the total extent with no short cuts….this may come to haunt you

After reading this article , I would think that there would be many comments to the article, but low and behold there was none. I have decided to make the first comment. Looking at Mr. Linton, I think that he is a superb journalist, the things he discovered, while being a journalist, he was keeping the DLP’s on their toes but leaving what he does best and entering politics, was beyond his capabilities. Now hearing all that talk of the controversy concerning allegation of plagiarism, I don’t see how a person should use another person’s speech to use on a platform, pretending as though he was the author. If he claims that himself ant the gentleman are friends, yes, they could assist one another to write each other speeches but do not use one’s speech as though he initiated it. I’m not hearing members of the UWP and their stallwats criticizing him for this , I think that was wrong. What they want me to believe , a student could copy another student work and present it for corrections. I think that Mr. Linton should apologize to the Dominican public for his actions.

Many Dominicans including DLP supporters are convinced Tony will be the one responsible for bringing down the DLP. It is rumored, it was Tony who blew the whistle as regards the plagiarism commess of Mr. Linton. The bashing might of the DLP with all guns blazing was witnessed on Thursday night. Now the voices are silent, their are some videos being circulated on the internet which would make the accusation laid on Mr. Linton pale when compared to the act of plagiarism by Skeritt. According to the videos an address which was allegedly delivered at the United Nation Assemble on 24th. September 2003 by Mr. Anerood Jugnauth, Prime Minister of Mauritius was also delivered by Roosevelt Skeritt, Prime Minister, word for word, at the United Nation on 24th September,2004. Again, according to another video, it is alleged, an address delivered by Mr. David Thompson(dec) Prime Minister of Barbados, on April 15th 2008 was repeated by Skeritt on April 23rd 2008. If all these allegations are true, is Ambrose going to hold a meeting of Cabinet, as told to the DLP supporters at the meeting of Thursday, and if Skeritt is found guilty, will he ask him to step down.

Prevost we all know by his utterances and behaviour has long lost credibility and respectability. But why would Claudius and Isaac come out to defend Linton? Exactly what are they defending? Is it true or not true that Linton is guilty of massive plagiarism? Is it true or not true that this is a heinous crime in the business of politics o\r any other field? Is it true or not true that Linton has boasted that he did not need a speech writer because because writing speeches comes so naturally to him? Is it true or not true that we now know that those nice-sounding phrases that came from his mouth were straight copies from someone else? Is it true or nor true that Linton’s plagiarism raises further questions about his credibility, honesty and suitability for leadership of a sports club, far more so, a country? So what is it that these blue gentlemen are defending or supporting? Come on guys, deal with the facts. I did not hear the Prime Minister refer to Mr. Linton and United Workers Party as “bastards”, and do not know under which circumstances these words were uttered; whether the PM used these words in private or public, in Parliament, at an official function, or on the political platform. However, this is really a new low, and the PM should consider retracting the use of this word to describe the Party Leader and the UWP followers. Maybe the PM is developing his own UWP Thesaurus – At the last sitting of Parliament he referred to the UWP as “dishonest”, now he says they’re “bastards”….
I encourage the UWP leadership and its followers to refrain from being distracted by the DLP. Do not engage in name calling, and do not sink to gutter politics. The headline proclaims “Veteran UWP Politician defends Lennox Linton”, but completely fails to mention the glaring omission from this so-called ‘defence’ on the central issue, i.e. Plagiarism! Perhaps a more appropriate headline would have been “Veteran UWP politician fails to defend Lennox Linton on plagiarism charge”.

First item on the agenda of the house of Assembly under Lennox will be the Memorandum of Understanding with China. Dominica will finally know if Skeritt abuse his power or not, did he sell the country or not.

We must recognize the leadership qualities of Mr. Linton, but Dominicans must not make the mistake of believing that ONE MAN will be able to solve our problems and bring an improvement of life for our people. Mr. Linton has taken the right approach of building a team of esteem men and women to motivate our people and implement the necessary plans and programmes to lift them out of poverty and dependency. This is our country and we can do better.

Mr Prevost you have yet to mention the issue of copying that Linton is being accussed off what you have said and if you had remained quiet is the same. It took you that long to come out to recycle what the Chronicle said about Linton, the issue now is Linton presenting a speech which is more than 80% identical to that of his St Lucian counterpart and making us believe that the contents was his original ideas and words. When he was caught he said that what he used from his friends speech was NOT substantial. Mr Prevost you have not even mentioned what DNO claims is a defense. How do you defend what Linton has already admitted that he did sir. This man said to us he writes his own speech remember, but all the while he knew that he was misleading the nation. hahahahaha. You guys are christian? Hell no! You are incorrigible boss man.

Mr Linton is a very good leader and has the team spirit. He is very industrious, honest is the best person to lead Da forward. He is safe.
skerrit is the Jim Jones of Dominica and my main concern is for Ian Douglas. of the DLP. I want to pre-warn him that if skerrit offers him a glass of red Kool-aid, be it before or after the elections, let him first drink a glass. Inform Behanzin of the offer. If Justina, Mammy, Alix, Ph. Aaron and the other women insist that you too sot and that you should drink first; don’t take that sitting down. Ian Ian Ian Ian. needs to run.

And trying after the fact to take it back and say oh is one minister he 9meant and 3. Finally to crown of his amazing leadership skills he plagerise another mans speech as his own???? Skerrit just learnt a new word and therefore he had to rush to tell laborites about it. I could see Skerrit practicing how to pronounce “Plagiarism’. He must have tried 1,220 tmes. But what sense it made anyways when 98% of Skerrit’s supporters never used that word and still do not know what it means? However, it’s a word politicians that are in trouble usually use against their opponent. Example, Hillary Clinton tried that against Obama in 2008 presidential candidate and she failed just as Skerrit must fail!

Mr linton parents would be very proud of their son as he struggle to put DA on the right track. You sir is an honorable man to stand up with mr linton when the pressure is on.for this I must say thank you, and mr linton May GOD go with you and bless you and no matter what happens you mr linton is already my PRIME MINISTER.

A Bastard is one who was conceived and or bor outside of wedlock. Although I am a product of “Amba mango”, I knew the father of Lennox Linton and I know he was married to Mr Linton before Lennox was conceived or born. Therefore Lennox Linton cannot be a bastard. There is another feller I know who is a real bastard. Does anyone know his real father’s last name? I have heard so many last names that he had to carry her last name. What a true bastard! No name calling DNO. I only mentioned Mr. Linton’s name in defense to father ok.

    1. CHARACTER! His record here is very frightening!
    2. BASTARD!. A bastard is a child born out of wedlock. Skero. you had the guts to use that word boy? All I will say here is I am from Vieill-case, under the Mango. It’s a word you should avoid no matter the context.
    3. FRAUD! Boy ban this word because Dominicans still want to know about the bin bobol, the tax transfer and you know what? GON Emmanuel raising his head
    4. INTEGRITY! Boy Skerro, learn to speak another language where this word will never be used because you have people irritated.
    5. VISION! Boy you really screwed us up with this one because all can see you have no vision whatsoever.

  68. Cry of a loser
    September 12, 2014

Mr. Prevost, good response but I would not event waste precious time on Skerrit. The man realize he does not have ideas; he knows Dominican’s just patiently waiting; The man knows how rot his character is so as far as he is concerned the best thing to do is try to get the visionary Lennox Linton and Team Dominica to come down to his level and turn this election into a maypwee thing, knowing very well that maypwee is the strength of the DLP, and no one wins them there. Can you not see the man is very troubled and Linton is a thorn in his flesh? I mean this year the man used May Day to organize a big rally, where he intended and encouraged Dominicans to come hear the BIG announcement. But he was so scared that he and Reggie had to use the occasion to attack Ms. William, and then, changed the date to November. Once again he invited laborites to his big speech at 10:30, where he really wanted to announce an election date; but again he got scared and
turned it on a campaign against Lennox. Do we need any more evidence? Like Saul of the old testament he knows his reign is over and the evil spirits acting up on him

Skeritt was totally out of control. He appeared to be like someone who was clearly delusional, maybe it was the new hair style that caused that behavior. A poll should be taken of all the Ministers of Government who spoke last night, in order to find out, had someone called them bastard Minister or tell them for fourteen years they have been behaving in office like a human tick, whether they would shout, hip, hip, hooray, I like that, I really like it. The cry last night was,” Linton must go, Linton must go now.” I wondered, who decides whether Mr. Linton must go, is it the Skeritt led DLP. The stupidity of a popular lawyer in his exuberance for the expulsion of Mr. Linton, did not realize, Mr. Linton’s name has not yet appeared on a ballot paper, no one has voted for him yet, therefore, where is he sending him, to Parliament I hope.

Mr. Prevost you are not addressing the issue. Your attempt to move away from the scandal of “plagiarism” will not work. What the Chronicle wrote about Linton back then is not what matters today. The Chronicle was then owned and managed by a sympathizer of Mr. Linton and a hater of Mr. Skerrit. That is now history.

Please deal with the issue at hand. Did Mr. Linton commit and act of plagiarism or not. It is either “yes” or “no”. You may even argue that whether he committed the indecent act of stealing original matter WITHOUT GIVING CREDIT TO THE PERSON WHO ORIGINATED IT, as sad as it is, this could be tolerated. After all there are still some among us who hate indecency irrespective of who is involved. You are not making any allowance for the human in all of us. Lennox is not a saint and he did something that is against the philosophy that has catapaulted him into the Dominican politics – transparency, high moral and ethical values, hater of corruption et\c. But to attempt to comment on the matter without making any reference as to the allegations levelled after Mr. Linton will not serve your purposes well. When he assumed the leadership of the UWP at Castle Bruce andgave his inaugural speech, did Mr. Linton use material from another speech delivered in a foreign land that was already in the public domain? Did he make any reference or did he give any credits to the author of the materials then? I have seen authors of books referencing their own books in other books that they subsequently produced. That is the right and proper thing to do. So to say that the views represented in the St. Lucian speech is similar to his own views and that he assisted in writing the speech so there is not problem with using materials from that speech. That is a flawed argument in the “civilized world”. The St. Lucian people knew that the speech was Allen Chastenet’s speech and no Lennox Linton’s speech. Linton is free to use excerpts from the speech but he MUST cite where he took those philosophical expressions. Mr. Prevost, did he commit the wrong he is accused of? What is your position? what is it that you understood he did? You must first explain your position on the “live” matter and then you heap praises however you think – wrongly or rightly. But speak tot he issue at hand first.

Up to now you haven’t addressed the plagiarism charges but cleverly tried to sly away from it by refering to a discredited ‘Man of the Year’ article from the Chronicle of 2012 written by one of the UWP choirboys in the media with absolutely no merit. Please come better than that!! Your fraudulent, unqualified leader has been exposed, plain and simple and admit it!
